Book Description

Wireless communications, advanced radar and sonar systems, and security systems for Internet transactions are contemporary examples of systems that employ digital signals to transmit information. This volume affords comprehensive, up-to-date treatment of the methodologies and application areas throughout the range of digital communication where individual signals, and sets of signals, with favorable correlation properties play a central role. Some application areas covered include Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) signals such as those in use for cell-phone communication; digital systems for coded radar and sonar signals; and methods for secure authentication and stream cipher cryptology. The authors provide the necessary mathematical background to explain how the signals are generated and to show how the signals satisfy the appropriate correlation constraints.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Solid Mathematical Approach.......2005-10-15

The decision about how to send a signal through the atmosphere is a complex decision which must include: getting an intelligible signal through the transmission system in spite of transmission noise, atmospheric effects, equipment noise; increasing the information throughput by data compression; providing differing levels of security depending on the nature of the data; and many other problems.

This book is a fairly rigorous mathematical analysis of the methodoligies and application areas throughout the range of digital communications. Important applications addressed in the book include Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) already used in cell-phones; radar and sonar signals; and others.

This book is intended for use as a reference work for engineers and computer scientists as well as to serve as a textbook for a course in digital communications.

The book gives a URL for a web site to be used for additions, corrections, and updating. Unfortunately the URL in the book is wrong, the correct URL is http://calliope.uwaterloo.ca/~ggong/GolombGongBook/GolombGongBook.htm. As of the time of this review, there are no additions or updating, and a couple of minor corrections.

5 out of 5 stars world renowned author.......2005-09-06

One of the authors, Solomon Golomb, is world renowned in cryptography circles. This text lets you see some of his efforts. It gives an extensive treatment of encrypting a signal in such ways that it can be efficiently decrypted, without compromising the security of the encoding. Of course, as just stated, this sounds rather vague. The book explains, in rigorous detail, the maths behind this.

The book appears best suited for a graduate level course, or for professionals in the field. Perhaps for undergraduates with some prior exposure to information theory and electrical engineering.

      Book Description

Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) is one of the most promising methods in solving the capacity problem of wireless communication systems. In addition to creating more efficient SDMA algorithms it is vital to determine and understand the theoretical limit of performance improvement. The greatest challenge is extending Shannon’s channel capacity equation to cover the wireless channels that use spatial signal processing. This book defines formulas which can be used to evaluate the limit capacity of multipath wireless channels in a particular receiving region with size limitation. It also contains charts with optimum numbers of space subchannels and limit capacities related to radio channel parameters. The book also investigates stochastic models for 2-D and 3-D multipath random radio channels. The non-ray method for building a stochastic model, based on spherical harmonics, is presented here for the first time.

        Book Description

Speech and Audio Coding for Wireless and Network Applications contains 34 chapters, loosely grouped into six topical areas. The chapters in this volume reflect the progress and present the state of the art in low-bit-rate speech coding, primarily at bit rates from 2.4 kbit/s to 16 kbit/s. Together they represent important contributions from leading researchers in the speech coding community.
Speech and Audio Coding for Wireless and Network Applications contains contributions describing technologies that are under consideration as standards for such applications as digital cellular communications (the half-rate American and European coding standards). A brief Introduction is followed by a section dedicated to low-delay speech coding, a research direction which emerged as a result of the CCITT requirement for a universal low-delay 16 kbit/s speech coding technology and now continues with the objective of achieving toll quality with moderate delay at a rate of 8 kbit/s. A section on the important topic of speech quality evaluation is then presented. This is followed by a section on speech coding for wireless transmission, and a section on audio coding which covers not only 7 kHz bandwidth speech, but also wideband coding applicable to high fidelity music. The book concludes with a section on speech coding for noisy transmission channels, followed by a section addressing future research directions.
Speech and Audio Coding for Wireless and Network Applications presents a cross-section of the key contributions in speech and audio coding which have emerged recently. For this reason, the book is a valuable reference for all researchers and graduate students in the speech coding community.

          Book Description

Wireless Communications: Theory and Techniques covers fundamental concepts of wireless communications including extensive discussion of cellular system design principles, interference and signal processing related topics. The author identifies the complexities of providing reliable wireless communications in the presence of several signal impairing parameters of the channel.
The first part of the book concentrates on mobile radio channels and the impairments these induce in signals propagating over them. These impairments include signal attenuation, fading - selective or flat, slow or fast, and interference. The second part addresses signal reception and processing for minimizing the impact of channel impairments. The third part brings into perspective cellular system design and covers cellular systems that are in commercial operation. The five 3G interface standards are described. Practical treatment of certain essential wireless topics such as antennas, electromagnetic waves and propagation is provided.
The material is extensively illustrated and provides comprehensive lists of reference after each chapter. Numerous solved examples and problems to help the reader are included. Problems are provided at the end of chapters for homework and review.
This book is for graduate level courses on wireless communications but it can also be adapted for the senior undergraduate level course by omitting material involving the more difficult mathematical manipulations. Professionals will find a wealth of practical insight gained from the author's years of experience in the field.

A great book! Very informative - there is a lot to learn about tree identification in Mississippi.

1 out of 5 stars Poor photos make the book hard to use.......2003-08-05

The idea of a specialized book for Mississippi trees is very worthwhile. Many of us first learned tree identification using the free booklet, Mississippi Trees, by Clair Brown, obtained from the Mississippi Forestry Commission.
Unfortunately, this book is less useful than that little booklet. The photographs are of extremely poor quality. The shots of the trees are fuzzy, sometimes overexposed, and frequently are so close up they render the silhouette unidentifiable. The specimen shots of leaves are generally made on a black background and the dark green leaves often fade into the picture. Photos of bark aren't much better.
The text accompanying each tree is limited. Again, the free booklet has a better description of the trees. The only advantage this book has over the free booklet is that it contains more species and is printed on glossy paper.
It was a good effort, and would have benefited greatly from better photography.

                      Book Description

The concept of "Environmental security" has emerged as one basis for understanding international conflicts. This phrase can mean a variety of things. It can signify security issues stemming from environmental concerns or conflicting needs, or it can mean that the environment is treated as a resource for the long term, and the question is what should be done today to preserve the quality of the environment in the future. Over the last several years, the authors of this book and their colleagues have demonstrated the power and value of risk assessment and decision analysis as tools that decision makers should use for a broad range of environmental problems, including environmental security. This book is based on the discussions and papers prepared for the NATO Advanced Research Workshop that took place in Eilat, Israel, in April 2004. Many of the contributions to the book do not deal directly with the region, instead, they apply a risk analytical approach to a variety of environmental problems. The goal was as much to inform about the problems as it was to show the power of risk analysis as a tool to discuss environmental policy.

                          Book Description

Bivectors occur naturally in the description of elliptically polarized homogeneous and inhomogeneous plane waves. The description of a homogeneous plane wave generally involves a vector (the unit vector along the propagation direction) and a bivbector (the complex amplitude of the wave). Inhomogeneous plane waves are described in terms of two bivectors - the complex amplitude and the complex slowness. The use of bivectors and their associated ellipses is essential for the presentation of the 'directional ellipse' method given in this book, in deriving all possible inhomogeneous plane wave solutions in a given context. The purpose of this book is to give an extensive treatment of the properties of bivectors and to show how these may be applied to the theory of homogeneous and inhomogeneous plane waves. For each chapter there are exercises with answers, many of which present further useful properties which are referred to afterwards. The material in this book is suitable for senior undergraduate and first year graduate students. It will also prove useful for researchers interested in homogeneous and inhomogeneous plane waves.

The late Shirley Jackson (1919-65) is the author of the classic short story, "The Lottery," a dark, unforgettable tale of the unthinking and murderous customs of a small New England town. She is also the author of several American Gothic novels, such as We Have Always Lived in the Castle and The Haunting of Hill House. Her atmospheric stories explore themes of psychological turmoil, isolation, and the inequity of fate. Just an Ordinary Day is a posthumous collection of 54 short stories (many of which have never been published), edited and introduced by two of Jackson's children. Jackson penned many of the stories in this volume for the popular press, for titles ranging from Fantasy and Science Fiction and The New Yorker to women's magazines such as Charm and Good Housekeeping. The disparity of the intended audience and the divergent styles result in an uneven collection of short stories, some that are outstanding and will be much appreciated by the reading public, others that hold interest only to the die-hard fan or chronicler of Jackson's work.

                          Book Description

The stories in this edition represent the great diversity of her work, from humor to her shocking explorations of the human psyche. The tales range, chronologically, from the writings of her college days and residence in Greenwich Village in the early 1940s, to the unforgettably chilling stories from the period just before her death. They provide an exciting overview of the evolution of her craft through a progression of forms and styles, and add significantly to the body of her published work.

Just an Ordinary Day is a testament to how large a talent Shirley Jackson had and to the depth, breadth, and complexity of her writing. Though this remarkable literary life was cut short, Jackson clearly established a unique voice that has won a permanent place in the canon of outstanding American literature, and remains a powerful influence on generations of readers and writers.

                          4 out of 5 stars A Nice Discovery.......2005-11-10

Shirley Jackson was a gem. She was a suburban mom and wife who managed to find the time to crank out loads of short fiction as well as authoring The Haunting of Hill House, easily the greatest haunted house novel yet done. Jackson's uncollected, often unpublished stories are here in this volume that arrives in the world like a late Christmas present. Some of these tales are hilarious, a few are disturbing, many are weird, and a handful are touchingly personal and concern Jackson's life raising her kids in post-War America. (Those last types were the ones I enjoyed most of all.) Shirley Jackson left the world far too soon and her like won't be seen again, but this volume, compiled by her son, is a nice keepsake for her fans, who never knew most of this existed.

                          well, i just loved it.

i adore shirley jackson's style: the way she caputured a time period long gone and dosed it with play and shivers.

i haven't had such a delightful time with a short story collection in eons.

if you've never read shirley jackson, start with 'the lottery' short story collection & you'll be so itchy for more, you'll hug this book to your chest just before you begin eating the pages.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Shirley Jackson.......2001-01-28

There has been tons of controversy over this book about whether or not is should have been published. My personal opinion is that is should not have been published because these stories were private stories and were not published for a reason. However, now it has been published and there is nothing anyone can do about it but enjoy it as a learning experience. The reason I gave the book five stars was because it is a very accurate representation of Shirley Jackson. Writing was always theraputic for her -- she used it to express the other dimensions of her life and her self which no one could understand. Writing was a way of putting everything that went on in her mind down on paper. Therefore, reading these stories is like reading her diary -- she expressed her emotions through fiction, and the variety of characters and plots that can be seen in this collection are a representation of a certain period of her life through her eyes. If you are looking for the edited fiction that made Shirley Jackson famous, this is not the book for you. However, if you are interested in the inner workings of the author's mind, this collection of stories and essays is the closest one can get.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely a mixed bag from a master storyteller........2000-01-08

As much as my friends and myself admire Jackson's classic works, I must agree that this is a pretty mediocre collection of short stories. Because many have not been seen for over 50 years however, they certainly belong in the library of every Shirley Jackson fan. "The Possibility of Evil" is stunning. Sometimes Shirley either tried too hard, had writer's block or simply experimented with the bizarre; whatever the reason, most of her works were ahead of her time and when she was good she was the BEST-there are, unfortunately too many rather dull and uninspired stories in this collection. Shirley was the female Stephen King of her day!
