I have to say that before reading this book I hated statistics and everythingto do with any type of natural sampling. But this book has changed my life! It's easy to read text and easy to follow examples have reinvigorated my love for statistical sampling. I recommend this to anyone who has any interest in statistics. It will change you life too!

terrible writing but good advice.......2006-01-10

This book is excrutiatingly poorly written, with painfully unfunny sarcasm as well as a misplaced or missing comma in every other sentence. While this distracts from the advice the author gives, the usefullness of it outweighs the obnoxious writing. Anyone who speeds, which is basically everyone, would do well to read this book.

Very poorly written book with very poor advice. Things like -- show some clevage, cry a lot, etc.

Written in 1990.......2003-10-21

This book, somewhat wordy, was written in 1990. There have been advances in technology in the past 13 years. There's no mention in his book on LASER devices or Ka band radar. Easy reading, yet not current. Look for another book.

Read before you get your driver's license or shortly after.......2003-07-07

I don't speed. I drive on cruise control at 65mph over Bay Area interstates and lower my speed as necessary for slower zones. I stay out of fast lanes, but yet I read this book anyway.

Driving at speed limit is boring to death. And that is why people speed. Trust me, I am bored beyond belief while I am cruising along at whatever the speed limit is. To entertain myself, I look for cops! I then estimate which speeder might get pulled over first. I chose a relatively slow (0-60 in 11 sec) car just for that reason so I wouldn't be overly tempted to drive like I would at my favorite race track. Rest assured, however, that I take full advantage of the fact that there is no law limiting how fast I can hit the speed limit every time I get a chance to. Just ask my sorry passengers. :-)

My pet peeve is people slowing down to look at accidents and people not using their turn signals. Please, just don't do it and speed up at first available instance. But I digress from the subject at hand. I found this book both enlightening and entertaining. I happen to hang out with people who are not as compliant with the law. While they were getting pulled over, I told them a few tips from the book and there were no tickets issued in six out of eight cases. These tips saved my friends well over $1000 combined. That is not bad compared to the price of the book, isn't it?

In short, if you drive on freeways, get this book. It will teach you to be more attentive, safer driver, what to do if you are busted, how to avoid getting the officer pissed and preoccupied with taking notes about you, and ultimately how to be a safer driver. It is true that some of the technology described is no longer state of the art, but not too many police agencies are equipped with state of the art equipment. Unfortunately, CHP is equipped nicely, so supplement your knowledge from this book with very current information about their crown vics and the associated equipment. I truly very highly recommend the book.

P.S. I got a speeding ticket once. I was a teenager and did everything wrong. The attitude cost me $170. I learned my lesson and remember every word said by that officer. If you are a teen, you should read the book to avoid this trouble or to help out your friends. Members of opposite sex would be impressed :-). It would be amusing to behave like an off-duty cop, but it could save you or your friends a lot of cash in astronomical insurance rate increases and traffic court fines.

Good Book.......2002-11-19

This book is good but does not help you fight a speeding ticket if you get one. It does help you avoid the chances of NOT getting stopped. If you do get a ticket tho, the book I would recommend is An Educated Guide to Speeding Tickets, How To Beat and Avoid Them by Richard Wallace. You can buy it here on Amazon. The book works, I used it and beat a ticket. Good luck to youall!!

If you drive you speed and if you speed then read this book!.......1998-08-06

Well written, logical, easy to read. All points make good sense.

I am someone who drives over 30,000 miles per year. When you drive this much you WILL get a ticket. Since I have read this book and begun applying its principles I have been able to get out of more tickets than you would believe. The author plainly clarifies what motivates a cop to give you a ticket and gives you excellent suggestions as to how to prevent getting a ticket in the first place.

At one time, I thought that there was no use fighting the system. Reading this book inspired me to learn more on the subject and now I fight EVERY ticket and win almost EVERY one, even when the cop shows in court. Even if you only learn one new tip (and you will learn many more that that) you will never be sorry that you bought this book.

Carl Gerhardt and Franz Huber address these questions among many others, drawing on research from bioacoustics, behavior, neurobiology, and evolutionary biology to present the first integrated approach to the study of acoustic communication in insects and anurans. They highlight both the common solutions that these very different groups have evolved to shared challenges, such as small size, ectothermy (cold-bloodedness), and noisy environments, as well as the divergences that reflect the many differences in evolutionary history between the groups. Although not an expert in this field, I find this book loaded with fascinating, detailed information on how insects and amphibians produce and perceive audio information. This book opens a whole new world of understanding regarding the buzz and clicks of insects and the vocalizations of frogs and toads. The text is detailed and scientific, perhaps best understood with some background in the sciences of biology and acoustics. This is not necessarily a beginners introduction to the field, rather a text for those that wish to delve deeper into this interesting subject. My thanks to the authors for the tremendous work they have accomplished in compiling and interpreting the many scientific studies cited and presenting them in an organized manner.

This is a smarter book than I had anticipated. The heroine is smarter, her friends are smarter, even her put-downs are smarter. It is also a love story, of a daughter for her mother. An appreciation of the influence parents and background had for her. And how she has adapted them into her life. It's a shame that this book may be swept under the rug and ignored in favor of other books that receive more publicity. A real sleeper.

...sharing what she knows. Sara Gran does us all the huge favor of neither overreaching for a grand universal plot nor underestimating the validity of what she clearly knows from her own experience and imagination. She's unapologetic as a young woman from the big city writing about growing up, about family, about change and adaptation and cycles-- and breaking those cycles. Her narrator is brave, independent to a fault, and refreshingly aware of the limitations of her own knowledge and experience.
This is a really solid first novel and does not have that awful cutesy show-offy self-consciously "quirky" quality that books about cool young women too often do. Gran is a much more level-headed writer than that. I'm looking forward to her future work.

A Little Gem of a Novel.......2002-01-09

I loved this novel! I "gobbled it up" in a day, thoroughly engrossed in Mary's life. The humor is subtle, the intense emotions ring true, and it's an easy and satisfying read. I enjoyed spending time with this contempoary heroine who's honest, realistic, a bit of a smartass, and quite likeable!

Witty and Clever.......2001-12-08

Sara Gran's Saturn's Return to New York is a witty and clever novel, a light, yet still somehow substantial read of a young woman in New York, turning twenty nine, trying to figure out various aspects of her life. There are a lot of books out there like that, I know, but this one distinguishes itself from the pack. Sara Gran is a fine writer and her novel holds together very well. Mary, the protagonist is a likeable heroine dealing with real issues--such as her slightly troubled relationship with her mother, and her mother's failing health. It is this relationship that is the focus of the novel and not the whole boyfriend thing that dominates so many other young single woman novels. The novel is witty and well told. Everything, plot, character, dialogue, is natural and unforced. I really enjoyed this one.

This was a good book on dealing with your parents getting older and dependent and the inevitability of care taking, to some extent. It chronicled the subject's feelings very well in dealing with these issues. Not as good as I expected, but still a good book and worth reading, especially if you are experiencing or have experienced this subject.
