The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Department of Defense is increasingly relying on computer- mediated communications to conduct business. This reliance introduces an amplified vulnerability to strategic information manipulation, or deception. This research draws on communication and deception literature to develop a conceptual model proposing relationships between deception detection abilities in a computer-mediated environment, gender, trust, and training. An experiment was conducted with 119 communications personnel to test the proposed hypotheses. No relationship between gender or trust and deception detection accuracy was found. Partial support was found showing that training improves deception detection accuracy. The most significant finding was that individuals deception detection abilities deteriorate in lean media environments. The results showed significant differences in deception detection abilities across media types; indicating lower accuracy rates in the lean media environments (i.e. audio and text). This suggests that deception detection is more difficult when the deceptive message is presented in a lean medium such as a text only online chat, than when delivered in richer medium. Future research should be conducted to further explore this finding.

Useful, but not the Best.......2005-09-15

Teaching with cartoons, what a fine idea! Why are so many books so poorly executed.

My complaints here are small. I need my reading glasses for the small typeface, the cartoons are not from real comic strips (they are drawn just for this book), I find it a bit basic. Still, these are nit-picks, in general I like it. It builds thematic lexical sets.

The best cartoon book for Spanish students remains "Laugh 'n' Learn Spanish : Featuring the #1 Comic Strip "For Better or For Worse"

Fill your head with boatloads of words in context..........2004-10-01

Nothing beats a good context for picking up foreign language vocabulary. Many books simply push lists of words into the reader's head and hope that something catches to make the words stick. Unfortunately, rote memorization unaccompanied by usage typically results in horrificly low retention rates. This book has none zip nada of those problems. True, it includes lists of vocabulary words and lots of them. But the comics set it apart from other books that claim to expand one's vocabulary. Instead of sitting on a neuron impatiently waiting for an opportunity for use, the comics give the words a context. The word lists then becomes more of a map to help navigate the comics, and retention skyrockets.

The comics focus more on European Spanish (or Español Iberico) than American Spanish. Nonetheless, the word and phrase lists also include references and idioms unique to Latin American Spanish. Words and phrases not used in Latin American Spanish get an asterisk next to them, so it's easy to tell them apart. Regardless, this book will probably better suit those wanting to speak Spanish in Spain. But anyone learning Spanish can benefit greatly from it.

Probably the best way to get the most out of this book is to read all of the vocabulary for a particular comic first, then read that same comic a few times through to cement the words in memory. Repetition and context will fuel retention, and returning to previously read comics will yield surprising results. Some words will stick like paste on a first reading; others may take a few times through. Nonetheless, many rewards await those who read through the entire book more than a few times.

Lastly, this is not a beginner's Spanish book. It assumes much foreknowledge from the reader. Basic grammar and very basic vocabulary are not covered in any depth. Probably the best time to go through this book would be after completing a basic Spanish class or book (i.e., know more than just present indicative verb conjugation, sentence structure, same basic vocabulary, pronouns, etc.). The level of learning can best be described as beginner intermediate. Those in the advanced level will likely breeze through it. So get going, read some comics, and learn a load of Spanish words.

I learned everyday English by reading a lot of comics and I always wanted a comic strip in Spanish. This book is exactly that and has a vocab reference for each strip. Great way to learn!

Great supplement for learning Spanish!.......2000-07-28

From the perspective of a Spanish teacher, this is a wonderful book to help build your Spanish vocabulary and comprehension.

The way the it's set up is: On one page there is a FULL page cartoon strip in color. There is a lot of dialogue, idioms, and basic vocabulary. One the opposite page is a list of vocabulary found in the comic strip in Spanish and English, divided into categories. The book is organized by cartoon title and topic. Some topics include: food & drink, money, travelling, etc. There are 30 cartoons in total, a well-organized table of contents, a glossary and a verb conjugation help section.

I definitely think this would be a great way to expand your knowledge (or your students' knowledge) of Spanish in a very interesting and humorous context.

I have had this book for over 5 years. I use it so much that it is now falling apart. The book is very concise and provides practical examples and indcludes references to regional differences in the Spanish language. If you are serious about learning Spanish - this book will help you quickly find the answers that you need. It is the most complete grammar reference that I have seen in a book this size. This book can be used by beginners, but it is most useful to those that have attained some level of comfort with the language and are looking for specific grammar and usage examples.

If you are seriously studying Spanish, and need a compact, complete resource for Spanish grammar, this is the book for you. It is extremely comprehensive, yet very manageable. This book is fantastic as a supplemental resource for any student in formal Spanish training. The book is beautifully arranged, containing clear explanations without sacrificing utility. I grabbed this book so many times that I almost wore it out! I cannot list the number of times that I have used grammatical constructions that I learned through the use of this book.

This pocket Oxford Spanish reference is a dictionary and a verb conjugation guide at the same time. The table of model verbs is found at the back of the book and verbs that fall into the category of "ar" "er" or "ir" are detailed in the first half of the book. Regardless how irregular the verb is if you follow model verb conjugation tables you will be able to conjugate any tense successfully. The beauty about this reference is it is not cumbersome but yet is very complete and be carried around at all times- in class, on vacation, etc. This pocket Spanish verb reference is perfect for students at all levels and for those who are informally learning the language.

If you only need a small dictionary, I suppose this one will do. But don't expect anything else. The book's big grammar section is not useful at all. You have to be extemely patient to read through it. In addition to the small print, this section is confusing and badly organized. This book is definitely NOT handy for a quick grammar reference.

I would prefer that instead of cramming everything together publishers gave more space to the dictionary part, including more words and using a bigger print, and then may be inserted some reference table (verbs, etc.) for people who have studied Spanish grammar before.

I think you should look around for similar items before settling on this one.

a good descriptive work.......2000-05-24

A handy combination of a good dictionary with a superb grammar. What I like most about this work is the descriptive nature : it is not a normative book, but describes the reality of the Spanish language as such, which makes it less useful maybe for the beginning student, but the more for intermediate and advanced levels. It includes sections on language varieties, even specifying the individual Latin countries when appropriate. If only they could publish this style of books for other languages too! I discovered the book through a Spanish friend who was using it as didactic material for her Spanish courses for foreigners in Sevilla.
