John A. Murray, author or editor of 30 other books on nature, edited this slim book of quotations for The Nature Conservancy, which will benefit from its sales. Murray provides brief essays introducing the 10 chapters that comprise it: "Beauty," "Seasons," "Solitude," "Community," etc. All the usual suspects are here: Aldo Leopold, Henry David Thoreau, Rachel Carson, Shakespeare, and nearly 200 others. Their most famous wisdoms are here too: "As soon as we take one thing by itself, we find it hitched to everything in the universe" (John Muir), "The land was ours before we were the land's" (Robert Frost). Other quotations are less familiar and, in some cases, perhaps should have remained so.
This book, when at its best, lives up to its billing and provides pithy quotations that quicken and inspire thought. Others are short on pith and tend to ramble on. The 35 quotations in the "Beauty" chapter, for example, are fairly evenly divided between the provocative and the prosaic. Perhaps this pot should have simmered longer on the stove. The stew might have been more hearty. --Pete Holloran
Book Description
The Quotable Nature Lover will provide nature lovers-birders, hikers, fishermen, gardeners, backpackers, philosophers, adventurers-with hours of reading pleasure, endless inspiration to get out and hit the trails, and plenty of food for thought during time spent in the great outdoors. The quotations in this book were assembled in the spirit of The Nature Conservancy's work: conservation and respect for the land. As such, it is an ideal gift for anyone who loves nature and cares about the natural world-and a great companion for those days when they can't be in the great outdoors.
Included are quotes from:
* Edward Abbey * Ansel Adams * Basho * Black Elk * Lord Byron * Rachel Carson * Willa Cather * Charles Darwin * Emily Dickinson * Robert Frost * Ernest Hemingway * Homer * John F. Kennedy * Barry Lopez * Norman Maclean * Margaret Mead * John Muir * Georgia O'Keefe * Theodore Roosevelt * William Shakespeare * Wallace Stegner * Henry David Thoreau * Oscar Wilde
"If I had to choose, I would rather have birds than airplanes." --Charles A. Lindbergh
"It is not down on a map, true places never are." --Herman Melville
"One swallow does not make a summer, but one skein of geese, cleaving the murk of a March thaw, is the spring." --Aldo Leopold
Customer Reviews:
A Book for a Lifetime!.......2000-06-04
This book is truely excellent. It is divided into catagories from community to place to stewardship, with quotations from well, and less well, known naturalists and other people like Thoreau, Emerson, Jane Goodall, Aldo Leopold, John Muir, Wendell Berry, Wallace Stegner, David Brower, Margaret Mead, Rachel Carson, Willa Cather, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, John Muir, Theodore Roosevelt, Darwin, Skakespeare, and so many more. There is an index, so you can look someone's name up and find quotations made by them. There is also a section called "Selected Biographies," which has short biographies of some of the people who wrote the quotations in this book. It is truely a pleasure to read, inspirational, and provides plenty of food for thought. A great book for "anyone who loves nature - birders, hikers, fisherman, gardeners, backpackers, adventurers..."

Product Description
In 1912, the village of Cape Wolstenholme, on Hudson Bay, was the northernmost edge of the North American frontier. It was there during a hunting expedition that Robert Flaherty, an American-born prospector and a pioneer filmmaker, chanced to see the landing of an overcrowded, leaking, sealskin-and-whalebone vessel. This improvised contraption, kept afloat by inflated seal bladders, held an Inuit hunter named Comock, his wife, their eleven children, and two dogs.
Ten years earlier, Comock and his family had crossed the Hudson Bay s ice floes in search of a fabled island rich in caribou, walruses, and seals. They found their promised land Mansel Island, sixty miles west of Cape Wolstenholme but lost their bearings and most of their belongings en route. Although they were the island s only human inhabitants, the family, thanks to Comock s skill as a hunter, not only survived but thrived in one of the world's harshest environments. A full decade later, they returned to tell their incredible tale.
With all the skill of the great documentary filmmaker he would later become, Flaherty recorded Comock s story and here retells it in the hunter s own voice. A classic of oral literature, a kind of real-life Eskimo folk tale of cunning, ingenuity, and daring, Comock was originally published to critical acclaim in 1968. This beautiful new large-format edition includes many Inuit drawings collected by Flaherty, several sections of previously omitted text, and a new epilogue by the noted anthropologist Edmund Carpenter. The book has also been enhanced by tri-tone reproductions of forty-six Flaherty photographs, images reminiscent of stills from his great silent film Nanook of the North.

Book Description
Biological sensors are usually remarkably small, sensitive and efficient. It is highly desirable to design corresponding artificial sensors for scientific, industrial and commercial purposes. This book is designed to fill an urgent need for interdisciplinary exchange between biologists studying sensors in the natural world and engineers and physical scientists developing artificial sensors. Contributions from leading scientists in this area, whether engineers or biologists, are written to be accessible to readers from these and other disciplines. The main topics cover mechanical sensors, visual sensors and vision and chemosensors. Readers will obtain a fuller understanding of the nature and performance of natural sensors as well as enhanced appreciation for the current status and the potential applicability of artificial microsensors. Friedrich G. Barth was awarded the "Karl-Ritter-von-Frisch-Medaille” at the 2003 Annual Conference of the German Zoological Society in Halle, Germany.

Book Description
This work presents some classical as well as some very recent results and techniques concerning the spectral geometry corresponding to the Laplace-Beltrami operator and the Hodge-de Rham operators.
It treats many topics that are not usually dealt with in this field, such as the continuous dependence of the eigenvalues with respect to the Riemannian metric in the CINFINITY-topology, and some of their consequences, such as Uhlenbeck's genericity theorem; examples of non-isometric flat tori in all dimensions greater than or equal to four; Gordon's classical technique for constructing isospectral closed Riemannian manifolds; a detailed presentation of Sunada's technique and Pesce's approach to isospectrality; Gordon and Webb's example of non-isometric convex domains in
R
n (
n>=4) that are isospectral for both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions; the Chanillo-Trèves estimate for the first positive eigenvalue of the Hodge-de Rham operator, etc. Significant applications are developed, and many open problems, references and suggestions for further reading are given. Several themes for additional research are pointed out.
Audience: This volume is designed as an introductory text for mathematicians and physicists interested in global analysis, analysis on manifolds, differential geometry, linear and multilinear algebra, and matrix theory. It is accessible to readers whose background includes basic Riemannian geometry and functional analysis. These mathematical prerequisites are covered in the first two chapters, thus making the book largely self-contained.

Mark Twain's Helpful Hints for Good Living: A Handbook for the Damned Human Race
ASIN: 1572705620 |
Book Description
What began as a college honors project became one of the most successful one-man shows in history. Hal Holbrook’s uncanny interpretation of the brilliant, cantankerous Mark Twain, developed from meticulous research into the writer’s speech and mannerisms, has wowed audiences and critics since 1959. This recording presents the best selections from the show. Drawn from a wide selection of Twain’s writings, Holbrook's show uses the ultimate weapon — laughter — to expose hypocrisy, prejudice, injustice, and other foibles of the human race.
Customer Reviews:
Twain Masters.......2007-08-02
This, as stated elsewhere, is a masterly recording of a master actor doing the material of a master writer. It is as funny and true today as when Twain was alive. Contrary to the editorial comments above, this two-cd set combines recordings previously only issued on cassette or LP. They were recorded in stereo and issued on Columbia Masterworks. The sound is actually pretty good. It is from two different performances before live audiences. These performances are not taken from the video broadcast (now on DVD), although there is some overlap in the material covered. Both these 2 CDs and the DVD are well worth having.
Holbrook's Twain.......2007-04-22
I saw Hal Holbrook many years ago on the Kennedy Center stage, doing this one man show. After I saw Holbrook's performance, I bought both Columbia LPs of Mark Twain Tonight and More of Mark Twain Tonight.
It rekindled that amazing show for me every time I heard these albums, until my record player died.
The track list was "Hal Holbrook in Mark Twain Tonight!" (1959): "Introduction," "On Smoking," "Journalism on Horseback," "My Encounter With An Interviewer," "Huck Battles His Conscience," and "How To Be Seventy." and "More of Hal Holbrook in Mark Twain Tonight!" (1961): "Introduction," "Slow Train And Low Dog," "Dangers Of Abstinence," "Problems Of Missionarying," "Accident Insurance," "Requesting A Hymn Book," "Huck And The Lynching Bee," "My Ancestor Satan," and "Encore." All of the two LPS are transfered to this two disk CD collection, with clean masters
Now on CD, the show is rekindled again for me and now my young nephew who I shared these with. He was studying Mark Twain and his works in school, so I played them on a car trip we had. He asked me as we listened to these CDs "Is this recording new, Uncle Bennet?" I said No, but they are new to you.
As much as that sounds like drvel, If you have not heard these recordings, it is worth you time to hear Holbrook orating Twain. He capture Twain the man, the author and the humorist
Enjoy
