A most excellent guide especially for outdoor people.......2006-03-02

This is a very good guidebooks for hikers and people that want to see some great outdoor sites--good photo ops as well as good places to hike. The book doesn't shows trails, but it gives great advice about places to see--you can then look up trails in the area to see how far you might want to hike.

We followed several of the stops on a drive through California Hwy 1 and this book covered a lot of territory. I own several in the series and this one is the best.

As a past student of Dr. Van Roosmalen I am biast to his accomplishes. However, the fact that this is the most complete and informative book on the specified subject can't be denied. Short yet informative descriptions, easily referenced in its taxonomic arrangement, and the illustrations by Betsy Van Roosmalen complete this comprehensive resource.

Guide to what Guianan monkeys eat.......2000-12-18

This book is the result of the interest that monkeys hold to the author. When out in the forest he noted that he would be able to tell a lot about the monkeys up in the canopy from the (half)eaten fruits found on the forest floor if only he had a good guide to fruits. So he gladly took up the opportunity to compile such a guide. His first effort was the "Surinaams_vruchtenbook" of which this is the expanded english version.

In principle this book covers 1727 species of plants belonging to 99 families (of which 94 are dicot families). Every species is covered (in principle) by a short text giving: botanical name; vernacular names; (sometimes) description of flowers or inflorescence; description of the fruit; "Notes" describing tree habit; area of occurrence. City of Secrets: Photographs of the PEOPLE of Naples.......2001-01-27

This is not a book for people looking for architectural or landscape photographs of Naples; the pictures focus solely on the people (mostly female children) of this ancient Italian city.

The photographs in this book are not technically brilliant, even by standards of the time, yet the dark shadows are rich with secret meaning: a woman in a doorway is seen only as a skirt and arms holding an infant, for example. The essay does a dutiful job of answering questions about why the photographs were taken in the loose fashion that some of them were, and why they are mostly focused on girls, but is neither boring nor compelling.

Dark, nihilistic, and foreboding.......2003-12-20

Whereas I probably read Sholokhovs And Quiet Flows the Don three or four times, I have read The Don flows Home to The Sea only once. It is a dark, nihilistic and foreboding novel. Picking up where volume one leads off, it follows the Russian Civil War to its conclusion in orgy of violence, death and destruction. I can see why other reviewers see this novel has having no redeemable qualities- it is a story of death, betrayal and heartache.

Yet, I give it a Five-Star rating. It is still a great novel. Once again we follow the Prokoffievich family as it tries to survive in the chaos of war. I was particularly intrigued how our protagonist, Gregor, changes sides from the Reds to the Whites and back. Clearly, Gregor was not driven by ideological considerations, but by survival, and yes, perhaps even his own self interest. By the way, from a historical perspective, this is probably the last war in which horses and cavalry were extensively used. Think about it as late as 1920's, men were fighting on horseback. Wow! Yes, it is worth the read, but you may only read it once. It is a terrifying novel.

I could not believe it when Aksinia is shot while trying to escape a roadblock on horseback. Just as the book is coming to its conclusion, just when you think that our Gregor and Aksina may finally escape the carnage of civil war, death comes.

By the way, from a historical perspective, this is probably the last war in which horses and cavalry were extensively used. Think about it as late as 1920's, men were fighting on horseback. Wow! Yes, it is worth the read, but you may only read it once. It is a terrifying novel.

Russian fiction.......2001-08-28

This was the novel that first introduced me to Russian fiction. I first borrowed and read it from friends of my family in the late 1950s. The author later won the 1965 Nobel Prize for Literature for this novel and the first part of it, "And Quiet Flows the Don". It is a very involved story of a Cossack family in the Don river area of Russia, prior to the 1917 revolution. Members of the family are involoved not only in WWI, but the sons are on different sides after the revolution (Red Army vs. White Army). I found myself getting very involved with the different family members. All of them with strong/weak points. The novel gives the reader a very good insight into the Cossack culture of the early 20th Century.
