    Book Description

The Summer Walkers is the name the crofters of Scotland's northwest Highlands gave the traveling people-the itinerant tinsmiths, horse-dealers, hawkers, and pearl fishers-who made their living on the road. They are not gypsies, but are indigenous Gaelic-speaking Scots, who, to this day, remain heirs of a vital and ancient culture.

The Summer Walkers documents an archetypal and vanishing way of life.

          2 out of 5 stars Let's be nice.......2004-11-10

I work and travel to Miami. I think the book
is a good guide but is insulting to adults.
In the night life section, it is o.k. to be gay
or lesbian but when you are an older adult the
author will dog you and tell you that it is past
your bed time for a good Latin music club. Hey,
          be nice and "inclusive."

5 out of 5 stars Better than Gremlins and better than E.T.!!!.......2003-09-18

Well, not really, but i've lived in south florida for 13 years and this book is a must have for anyone who lives down here or is thinking about visiting. Everyone thinks they have a true grasp of the miami scene, but this author actually does.

4 out of 5 stars Clear and Enjoyable writing style sets this guide apart........2003-01-05

Tourism generates over {$$$$} billion annually for the Florida economy, which is more than twice the entire GNP for Cuba. That is why there is a fierce fight for the Florida travel guide market. Frommer's is one of the best guides available.

This South Florida guide is somewhat more expanded than "Frommer's Florida" Guide (see my review). If you are going to visit just MIAMI, the EVERGLADES, PALM BEACH, FT. LAUDERDALE or the KEYS, then you will find this guide more compact, lighter and a bit cheaper.

The same great writing style that is in the Frommer's state guide is found in this more compact companion. The accommodation and dining recommendations are reliable and on the money. This guide lists the best restaurants that South Florida has to offer. A lodging and restaurant index would be a definite plus for this guide. As it stands now, if you have a restaurant you want to look up, you have to go through all the listings in the city you are in until you stumble across the name you seek or miss seeing it completely.

The rating system is labored and difficult to understand. The explanation of the "new star rating system" is buried in the book and not indexed. It was by quirk that I found it. Strange.

The Internet web site addresses provided for hotels could be more comprehensive considering that this is a 2003 guide. In today's world of "connectivity" you can visit the hotel sites and see the accommodations and rates prior to making reservations. And, website/email addresses are restricted to the lodging listings even though many of the restaurants now have their own websites with photos and menus and email to makes reservations.

However, there are two significant areas in this guide that could use improvement: maps and hotels/restaurants.

Regarding the maps: the maps in the guide are lackluster. More and better maps would greatly help the user.

What put this guide on top of the competing guides is the clear and enjoyable writing style of the review. The introductions of the regional areas are the best of the guides I reviewed. You will do well if you have to chose just one South Florida guide and you select Frommer's.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Guidebook Ever!.......2002-11-01

This is probably the best guidebook I ever read. The author has a really good writing style and it is genuinely interesting and fun to read (not that I'm suggesting you pick it over Fitzgerald or anything, just that it's a really well-written book). Her restaurant reviews are really excellent--just reading some of them made me start to drool. And while many of the restaurant listings are for priceyish places, she does list some great, fun, authentic, and in some cases, way off the beaten track yummy places to try. I trust her opinion completely!

This is a really thorough guidebook, with good and honest hotel listings (one of the only people to vocalize what we all know--the Delano IS overrated!) and a great chapter on what to do and see if you want to do and see more than just the beaches of South Florida. The Miami coverage is awesome-- good tips on shopping, a really knowledgeable chapter on nighlife, and more.

The Everglades chapter has a hilarious essay about how the author was reluctant to go the first time, and the coverage of the Keys, Palm Beaches, Boca, etc. are just as good. I usually expect a Frommer's guidebook to be a bit stuffier than this, but as soon as I read the intro, I knew I had to try this book, and I'm so happy I did. You will be too. It rocks!

5 out of 5 stars South Florida exposed.......2002-09-28

Wow. I used to think that South Florida just meant Miami and palm trees. This book proved to me and my husband that South Florida is much, much more. I got the book on a bet with my husband, who insisted that So Flo was a lot of fun and not just laying out at a pool kind of fun. This book proved me wrong and I lost the bet, but boy was I glad to be a loser in this wager! This book is a must have for anyone who thinks that a trip to Florida can be hot and boring. Quite the contrary!! Thanks, Frommer's. We'll be back to So Flo very soon.

5 out of 5 stars Great detail on hotel value.......2000-11-17

This book rates hundreds of hotels on quality, 1-4 stars, and also rates them by price. But the really excellent part is that the quality/price ratings are rolled into one more listing, and that is the VALUE listing.

Looking at the value lists, you can spot in the top value hotels a couple that are in your price range, and are high quality (relative to the others in that price range). When I was a college student in Florida this was a fantastic way to find a low priced hotel, and still be confident that it has good quality.

Unfortunately the (first edition) book does not have text descriptions of all the hotels, but really, that is not what I am looking for. I just want the best quality I can find for a certain price. It does have amenities listings, and phone numbers so you can go ahead and call the three or four hotels that look best value.

Now the first edition is seriously out of date in this very dynamic tourism market. The third edition is about two years old so it may be out of date, too, but the value guidelines will still hold for the key properties.

2 out of 5 stars Not Enough of the Keys.......2000-01-04

I bought this book hoping for great insight on Key West (an infinitely more desirable and intriguing locale to write about than Miami) and was sorely disappointed.

I really enjoyed Sehlinger's Unofficial Guide to WDW and frankly, expected more from this book. A lot more.

To be fair, most guide books don't pay nearly enough attention to the Keys, instead imparting more information than I ever wanted to know about Miami, a city that I've come to deplore.

It might be me; I just don't get the hype and focus on a sullied, soulless, filthville of a town like Miami over the glorious, exquisite keys.

At any rate, if for whatever unfathomable reason you really want to spend lots of time in Miami, this book is for you. If you're looking for Keys information, look elsewhere (though I haven't found a good alternative myself).

Just be forewarned that there's a good reason MIAMI has a huge typeface on the front and "the Keys" is shrunk down in size. It's a damned shame.

Got Reluctant Readers? Or 4-8 year-olds? _You Wouldn't Want to be an American Colonist : A Settlement You'd Rather Not Start_ should get the Younger Generation Hooked-on-History as it recounts the history of the first English colony, Jamestown, in North America.

Why should the Spanish have all the gold and silver in the New World (the Americas)? The Virgin Queen, Elizabeth, wanted to get in on the good times, too. She appointed Walter Raleigh (soon to be "Sir") to look into it for her.

Wally was no fool, so he sent his half-brother off to the New World to
find the perfect paradise, preferably loaded with the aforementioned goodies. David Antram's snapshot-sized, comically irreverant illustration shows what happened to Wally's good ole brother, but others must have made it through in better shape.

The establishment of that colony (ever wonder why it's called "Jamestown" and not "Elizabethtown"?), and the messes they got themselves into until they finally got it right (it took three tries over twenty-two years), are recounted in somewhat tongue-in-cheek detail by Jacqueline Morley. Even the chapter titles give you a hint of the humor that's coming:

This book is only one in the "You Wouldn't Want To..." historical series created by David Salariya, a freelance illustrator and designer. He founded The Salariya Book Company in 1989, in England, to "...create and design children's non-fiction books that combined very high educational and editorial standards."

Jacqueline Morley is the author of a number of the books in this series. She's taught English and History, "...and has a special interest in the history of everyday life...." She's also authored non-fiction books for Peter Bedrick Books.

David Antram's whimsical artwork is a major reason the books in this series are so funny. His cartoon-style caricatures are deliberately outrageous. Their company says, "Salariya Books...designed to stimulate, entertain and inform."

Take advantage of David Salariya's creations to let your youngsters have an opportunity to give History a second chance. _You Wouldn't Want to be an American Colonist : A Settlement You'd Rather Not Start_ is definitely worth 5 stars from gobbysreviews.

                        Book Description

The living human brain produces continuous electrical activity which has been known for a century. The most important patterns of this activity were described about 70 years ago. Since that time the electroencephalogram (EEG) has been investigated from various points of view. The fact that it proved to be a major tool for diagnosis of many diseases especially those affecting the brain was the main reason for continuous scientific interest.

                              Book Description

The theory of the Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation observed by Cherenkov in 1934 was created by Tamm, Frank and Ginsburg who associated the observed blue light with the uniform charge motion of a charge at a velocity greater than the velocity of light in the medium. On the other hand, Vavilov, Cherenkov's teacher, attributed the observed blue light to the deceleration of electrons. This has given rise to the appearance of papers in which the radiation of a charge uniformly moving in a finite space interval was related to the Bremsstrahlung arising at the end points of the motion interval.

This monograph is intended for students of the third year and higher, for postgraduates, for professional scientists (both experimentalists and theoreticians) dealing with Vavilov-Cherenkov and synchrotron radiation. An acquaintance with the three volumes of the Landau and Lifshitz course (Quantum Mechanics, Classical Field Theory and Macroscopic Electrodynamics) is sufficient for understanding the text.

                              Book Description

Henri Michaux defies common critical definition. Critics have compared his work to such diverse artists as Kafka, Goya, Swift, Klee, and Beckett. Allen Ginsberg called Michaux "genius," and Jorge Luis Borges wrote that Michaux's work "is without equal in the literature of our time." This anthology contains substantial selections from almost all of Michaux's major works, most never before published in English, and allows readers to explore the haunting verbal and pictorial landscape of a twentieth-century visionary.

This early 20th century psychonaut is the latest embodiment of the Poet Maudit, intuitively following the program set out by Baudelaire and brilliantly brought to fruition by Rimbaud and Lautreamont and added to substantially by the surrealists. It is, however, Michaux's connection to the author of Maldoror that draws me to him, and as in Ducassean texts, Michaux's writings reveal numinous monsters aplenty, strange landscapes, psychic flora and fauna that are noted, illuminated from all sides, catalogued in precise detail. A selection of the art is given as well. These are good to excellent translations, as noted in the previous review. The selection and chronology makes this book stand out over the New Directions standard that we've long depended on for our picture of Michaux.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible translation of a modern master.......2000-06-16

Even if you speak French, this book is an indispensible source on the great, 20th. century poet Henri Michaux. One of the important things that David Ball establishes is the chronology of Michaux's publishings. Michaux often published a string of small books between major collections - the major books overlapping, partially containing and redacting the earlier books in a highly complex and confusing way. In some cases, the larger work even duplicates the title of a smaller work. Ball untangles this gnarly time-line once and for all.

This is the most extensive selection in English from all phases of Michaux's long poetic career. It includes excerpts from his prose works - the travel writings and the mescalin writings, although nothing was taken from A Barbarian in Asia and Miserable Miracle. There are some plates that provide a view of Michaux's often superb graphic art.

The translations stand up pretty well against Richard Ellman's in Selected Writings (also highly recommended); however, this is a much larger work. Ball is perhaps on the literal side as a translator, a respectable choice. Probably, the only way to translate a poet impeccably, is to have a team of accomplished poets working in direct collaboration with the living poet who also speaks the second language well. And, of course, that's not the case, here. As far as I know, among major 20th. century poets translated into English, only Jorge Luis Borges was tranlated in this arcadian manner. That said, there's nothing wrong with these translations, except that David Ball, though possessed of a good ear, is not himself a poet, or trying to use a translation of a poem as an occasion to write another poem. Again, this is a respectable choice. In a sense Michaux is easy to translate. His language, though highly individual, is clear and direct (except when he's creating his bombastic new words). It's this language and conscience (John Ashberry's critical insight) in service in service to a deep and powerful visionary faculty, that makes Michaux one of the truly great poets of the 20th. century.
