It may be strikingly beautifulbut does it also strike? And if it does, what should you do?
Potentially dangerous creatures crawl, scurry, and slither along the desert floor. Learn about their habitats, reproduction cycles, feeding habits, and hiding spots. The Wagners tell you what to do if you are bitten, stung, or harmed by one of these potentially deadly creatures. Spectacularly illustrated and entertaining to read, Tread Lightly also provides information about venomous or poisonous animals, including rattlesnakes, scorpions, Gila monsters, tarantulas, and black widow and brown recluse spiders. 70 color photos.
Customer Reviews:
Strongly recommended to hikers, campers, sightseers and vacationers in these areas .......2006-05-03
Expertly co-authored by Rich Wagner (Emergency Room Physician with a Ph. D in pharmacology and professional wildlife photographer) and Marie Wagner (an accomplished photographer and Registered Nurse), Tread Lightly: Venomous And Poisonous Animals Of The Southwest is a superbly illustrated and informative guide to identifying, avoiding, and surviving the venomous and poisonous wildlife in the American southwest. Tread Lightly provides the reader with an extensive understanding of each featured animal's range and habitat, physical characteristics, diet, behavior, reproduction and life cycles. Tread Lightly's thoroughly "reader friendly" text is enhanced with the inclusion of 55 full-color photographs of the animals to avoid (as well as harmless ones often encountered in the same region) for a more informed approach to identifying dangerous wildlife. An invaluable reference for avoidance of bites and an accurate aide of what to do in the case of an attack, Tread Lightly is very strongly recommended to hikers, campers, sightseers and vacationers in these areas inhabited by poisonous or venomous animals.

Book Description
The Restionaceae, sometimes referred to as the 'Australian Rushes', have often been ignored or totally omitted from ecological surveys due to an absence of reliable identification keys. This volume redresses that lack by providing a fully illustrated field guide, allowing all Australian species to be identified. Combining user-friendly, yet scientifically accurate, text with beautiful pencil drawings, it lists information on morphology, flowering behaviour, distribution and ecological preferences, and definitive anatomical characteristics.
Book Description
The second edition of Flowering Plants: Flowering Rush to Rushes offers new material, including a preface, seventeen new illustrations of the additional species now known from Illinois, a revised list of illustrations, and an appendix of the additions and changes since 1970 in the identification, classification, and location of the plants included in the first edition. This new edition of the first volume in the multi-volume series of The Illustrated Flora of Illinois—which provides a working reference for the identification and classification of these plant forms in the state—includes flowering rushes, arrowheads, pondweeds, naiads, duckweeds, cattails, bur reeds, spiderworts, and rushes.
In his introduction, Robert H. Mohlenbrock defines terms and procedures used in the identification and classification of this group of flowering plants referred to as monocotyledons—plants that produce upon germination a single cotyledon or seed-leaf and are often identified by their tall, slender, grass-like leaves. He outlines the life histories and morphologies of the representative monocots and illustrates the plants’ habits and frequencies in Illinois.
Geared to the amateur as well as the professional botanist, the volume includes a glossary of definitions and identification keys to classify the plants according to order, family, genus, and species. The identifying characteristics of each descending class are also given in detail. The morphology of each species is outlined along with data on frequency of occurrence, related soil and climate conditions, and history of past collections. Among the 125 illustrations are detailed sketches of the important features of each species and maps indicating the geographical locations of each species in Illinois.
Customer Reviews:
Clearly Written and Illustrated.......2000-11-05
This volume is one of several (about 10)that will make up a complete Flora of Illinois. Many volumes are available now, and a few wait to be published. The complete flora will include something nearing 3000 entries for individual species of this surprisingly diverse area of the county, with distribution maps specific to IL. Its entries are very readable, while including much information for characteristics and distribution, in addition to many line drawings that make it valuable for ID too.

A Beautiful Book.......2004-02-10
This book contains beautiful photos and basic information aimed at tourists about selected nature reserves and other interesting places of Indonesia.
Unfortunately while some regions of the country (like Java) are covered in good detail, others (like Kalimantan, where only 1 out of 7 currently existing national parks is featured) are not.
As a slight attempt at completeness, all parks existing at the time of writing are listed in an appendix at the end of the book, but information on those not in the pictorial section is minimal.
Still, while it won't give you the complete picture, it is a beautiful and inspiring book for those who are only planning their first visit to the country, and a nice souvenir for those who have visited the parks described.

FINALLY, A BOOK ABOUT THE NATIONAL PARKS OF THE PHILIPPINES.......2007-04-29
I recently bought this book (april 28 2007) and im happy to get this since i never had any idea where and what philippine national parks look like and where are they exactly located...its full of information and photography with some of the unusual flora and fauna found endemic in the country....while the book is chock full of informations and photographs, it still is incomplete as there are some more national parks not shown...a volume 2 would have been made.wish books like these are being published more for awareness of how rich and diverse the country has to offer
Not What I Expected!.......2003-12-30
I am an avid cooker of Indian food and have several great Indian cookbooks. This one was a major disappointment and a waste of money. Tried a number of recipes in order to make a proper assessment, did not like any of them.
Recipes are simple and uncomplicated. However, flavours were unappealing and unexciting and did not vary much from one recipe to the next. After making about 6 recipes I gave up.
Environmental masterpiece.......2002-02-27
This book is the first and only one that focuses on the environmental aspects of the Philippines in a convincing and brilliant way. I hope to meet Mr. Nigel Hicks one day in person.

Book Description
The Asian elephant has had a unique cultural association with people. Unfortunately, elephants and people have also been in conflict, resulting in the decline in elephants throughout their former range in Southern Asia. This book provides an ecological analysis of elephant human interaction and its implications for the conservation of elephants. The foraging habits of elephants and their impact on vegetation are considered, along with the interactions that occur between elephants and humans. The ecological data provide the basis for recommendations on elephant conservation and management, keeping in view the socio-economic imperatives of the Asian region. This first comprehensive account of Asian elephant ecology will be of particular interest to conservation biologists and mammalogists.
Customer Reviews:
essential elephant book.......2004-05-08
This book complements Dr.Sukumar's other book, 'elephant days and nights'. Whereas that book is light reading and blends anecdotal information about elephants and the fun of doing research with megavertebrates, 'The asian elephant' is for the more advanced reader with specialist information about the ecological aspects of asian Elephant.
The complete ecology and biogeography of the asian elephant has hitherto been meagre and uninformative, being limited to few paragraphs in game books and wildlife journals. This book, for the most part focuses on the ecology of Asian elephants in India, though some references are made to other populations. It provides an excellent historical perspective of the status of elephants as semi-domesticated animals, in hindu mythology and its use in medieval kingdoms. Dr. Sukumars work is probably seminal in bringing out a whole suite of relevant ecological information about asian elephants and giving it a firm footing on the conservation map.
Overall good reading and essential for the serious elephant biologist and conservationalist.

Book Description
Covers both the Probabalistic models and Statistical methods used by reliability engineers. It contains explanations of how the mathematical models and results apply to engineering design and the analysis of lifetime data sets. Most applications are drawn from mechanical, civil or electrical engineering systems.
Customer Reviews:
The definitive introduction to reliability analysis.......2001-02-01
This is THE seminal text on reliability analysis. The author writes with the same crystal clarity he uses to present material at technical conferences. The exercises are carefully graded to lead the diligent reader toward steadily deepening understanding of the material. All diagrams are clear, cogent, carefully annotated, and well keyed to accompanying text. The definition and explanations of cut sets are especially good, allowing the engineer or analyst to economically reduce a complex problem to a set of smaller, more mathematically tractable problems. Also, this work does an excellent job of ramping the reader's knowledge upward from the justifiably assumes prerequisite of basic statistics learned in one introductory class presumably having a calculus prerequisite.
Excellent presentation of Reliability Math.......2000-02-05
I have to give it to this author, he has a very high assumption of math. If you are not a math wiz but can comprehend Calculus, this book is beyond outstanding. I will give the reader the necessary math methods for achieving you reliability analysis correctly. I spent alot of time going through these calcs and doing the proofs they are with out a dought right on the money. The boo is packed full of wonderful examples and methods. Kudos to the author.
Outstanding!.......1999-10-13
This is definitely the best text on Reliability Engineering that I've seen. Leemis really brings the material to life in a way that I have not seen replicated in the other texts that I have perused. For a first introduction to Reliability, I cannot think of a better text. The reader should have a solid foundation in mathematical statistics, however, before starting on this volume. An adequate resource for building this foundation is Larson and Marx's "Introduction to Mathematical Statistics". Especially make sure you understand the basics of maximum-likelihood, as Leemis emphasizes it in his derivations -- the more advanced stuff you'll learn about in his book, however.
As an aside, I have actually taken Leemis' class, and I can honestly say that I learned more about probability from his lectures and the text than I ever previously thought possible. Again, I highly recommend the text.
Book Description
Volume I of The Selected Letters of Tennessee Williams ends with the unexpected triumph of The Glass Menagerie. Volume II extends the correspondence from 1946 to 1957, a time of intense creativity which saw the production of A Streetcar Named Desire, The Rose Tattoo, Camino Real, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Following the immense success of Streetcar, Williams struggles to retain his prominence with a prodigious outpouring of stories, poetry, and novels as well as plays. Several major film projects, including the notorious Baby Doll, bring Williams and his collaborator Elia Kazan into conflict with powerful agencies of censorship, exposing both the conservative landscape of the 1950s and Williams' own studied resistance to the forces of conformity. Letters written to Kazan, Carson McCullers, Gore Vidal, publisher James Laughlin, and Audrey Wood, Williams' resourceful agent, continue earlier lines of correspondence and introduce new celebrity figures. The Broadway and Hollywood successes in the evolving career of America's premier dramatist vie with a string of personal losses and a deepening depression to make this period an emotional and artistic rollercoaster for Tennessee.
Compiled by leading Williams scholars Albert J. Devlin, Professor of English at the University of Missouri, and Nancy M. Tischler, Professor Emerita of English at the Pennsylvania State University, Volume II maintains the exacting standard of Volume I, called by Choice: "a volume that will prove indispensable to all serious students of this author...meticulous annotations greatly increase the value of this gathering."
Customer Reviews:
Covers the Most Productive Years of his Life.......2005-02-15
This is the second volume of correspondence of Tennessee Williams covering the most productive middle years of his life.
It includes letters to and from friends during what was his most productive time. This when he was writing some of his best works, and the letters reflect the difficulties he was having with the work in process. These letters end in 1957 when he had just had two failed plays and the ever present critics were predicting the end of his career.
The book also includes a running commentary on the letters to keep them in perspective to the actuall happenings in his life. As a result, they form a sort of autobiography of the great dramatist.
