Book Description
Reviewing current studies and previously unpublished research from leading laboratories around the world, Unraveling Lipid Metabolism with Microarrays demonstrates the use of microarrays and transcriptomic approaches to clarify the biological function of lipids. With contributions from world-class researchers, the book focuses on the use of microarrays to study and understand lipid metabolism. With coverage that spans the technologies of genomics, transriptomics, and meatabolomics, the text contains reviews of published work, provides a fresh look at new data, and presents previously unpublished work. It explores the role of fatty acids in gene expression and the various effects lipids have on the cell cycle, cholesterol metabolism, and insulin secretion. Taking a proteomic approach to looking at lipids, the book covers a wide variety of subjects, all linked to the study of lipid metabolism.

Parnassus at Home, R. and H. Mifflin, Proprietors. This Shop Is Haunted -- Booklovers Welcome! (This jacketless hardcover is intended for the library trade.)
Customer Reviews:
A bit dated, but a must read for any booklover.......2007-08-07
Interesting for any book (or bookshop) lover. A fun read, but a mediocre mystery. Loaded with stereotypes, but forgivable for the time period.
The story of a used bookshop in Brooklyn at the very end of WWI, and strange incidents that befall a young ad salesman who befriends the shop owners.
Calling all Bibliophiles!.......2006-08-15
Part romance, part thriller, part comedy, the Haunted Bookshop is an offering at the altar of the book. Morley's obvious love of literature and the written word shines through in an old-fashioned, sweet, innocent tale.
Quaint and Delightful - Perfect Gift for Book Lovers.......2004-10-30
The Haunted Bookshop is quaint, delightful fiction that is simultaneously entertaining and thought provoking. Like its predecessor, Parnassus on Wheels, it is first and foremost a book for book lovers. The exuberant Roger Mifflin, the owner of a dusty, out-of-the way, used bookstore in Brooklyn, thrives on helping people discover new books and authors. His bookshop motto reads: "We have what you want, though you may not know you want it." Making money is secondary to him and his favorite pastime is talking and arguing, especially about books.
Written in 1919, the action centers upon a then contemporary event, the planned voyage of Woodrow Wilson to the Peace Conference in Europe. Roger's leather bound copy of Carlyle's Oliver Cromwell disappears from its shelf, only to reappear the following night. A clever story of espionage follows.
Roger is a man of his times and is deeply concerned that the mistakes leading to the Great War not be repeated. His hopes for future world peace are poignant, especially as we modern readers realize that in just two decades the Great War would be renamed, and numbered.
Christopher Morley's characters - the irrepressible Roger Mifflin, his pragmatic and loveable wife Helen McGill Mifflin, the youthful, diligent Titania Chapman that works in their shop, and her idealistic suitor Aubrey Gilbert - are all eminently likeable characters. The villains are indeed villainous, but thankfully, miscommunications within their ranks causes their plans to go awry. Aubrey, acting as an amateur sleuth, misinterprets the situation, but ultimately all works out for the best.
I suppose it is best to read Parnassus on Wheels and its sequel, The Haunted Bookshop, in order, but it is certainly not necessary. I suspect that whichever you begin with, you will immediately begin searching for the other. It is no surprise that Christopher Morley, author of more than 50 books, is primarily remembered for these two marvelous stories.
Years ago my wife and I stumbled upon a pleasantly enticing, used bookstore on a narrow street in downtown Mobile. It was appropriately named The Haunted Bookshop.
"A face of fanatical ecstasy.".......2004-10-11
"The Haunted Bookshop" is the sequel to "Parnassus on Wheels." In "Parnassus on Wheels", Roger Mifflin romances spinster Helen McGill. In "The Haunted Bookshop", Roger and Helen have parked the traveling caravan of books, and they've opened a bookshop in Brooklyn. Roger has very definite ideas about books and his role as a bookseller. Roger sees himself as "a specialist in adjusting the book to the human need." So he "prescribes books" for his customers, refuses to sell rubbish or bestsellers, and has a keen eye for the customer whose "mind is ill for lack of books." One day, a young man named Aubrey Gilbert steps inside the Haunted Bookshop in hopes of selling his advertising services to Roger Mifflin. Instead, Roger spots that Aubrey is in desperate need of a few good books, and so they strike up a friendship. Aubrey's relationship with the Mifflins intensifies when Miss Titania Chapman arrives to work in the bookshop. Titania is the precious daughter of Mr. Chapman of Chapman Daintybits Company--one of Aubrey's biggest clients. Titania is sent to the bookshop to divest herself of "absurd, wasteful, snobbish notions." Titania's father believes that she will benefit from "being surrounded by books."
Shortly after the beautiful Titania arrives, Aubrey keeps finding excuses to visit the shop. And he discovers that there are mysterious goings on taking place. Books disappear only to reappear on the shelf within days, and sinister characters lurk in the alley behind the bookshop. Aubrey's curiosity results in a vicious assault, and soon he's on the scent of a great mystery ...
"The Haunted Bookshop" was written in 1919--just after the end of WWI. While not as quaint as "Parnassus on Wheels", it is also much more serious. It's part romance, part mystery, but the best parts of all are the pages jammed packed with Mifflin's (or the author's) philosophy about books. Clearly Morley is a man who understands perfectly the power of good books, and these pages ring out with a joyous truth. Mifflin states: "but there is indeed a heaven on this earth, a heaven which we inhabit when we read a good book." And Mifflin promotes the names of many books within these delightful pages. Many of the titles Mifflin recommends are now almost lost, and several pages are devoted to WWI literature. Mifflin argues that the Truth is "rationed by the government ... I saw the world clawing itself to threads in blind rage. I saw the glutton, the idler, and the fool applauding, while brave and simple men walked into the horrors of hell." The novel's dalliance with espionage is the book's weakest but necessary element. Mifflin's description of the dedicated bibliophile and anti-war sentiments are unforgettable, and make the novel, ultimately, rewarding--displacedhuman
An Unusual and Enjoyable Book.......2003-02-20
This was an unusual little book but I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were a few quirky points I could nitpick about -- the characters are a little mannered and Mr. Mifflin, the eccentric but charming bookseller, is at his best discussing books and less interesting as an anti-war crusader, but these I wrote off to the time period the book was written. For me, they didn't distract much from the overall enjoyment of the book. Even the mystery to the plot turned out better than I'd expected. I haven't read the prior book, "Parnassus on Wheels" but I've added it to my future reading list.
Book Description
A charming and entertaining novel that captures the romance of books and bookshops. "When you sell a man a book," says Roger Mifflin, protagonist of this classic bookselling novel, "you don\'t sell him just twelve ounces of paper and ink and glue--you sell him a whole new life." The Haunted Bookshop finds Mifflin and his wife, Helen McGill, ensconced in Brooklyn, where they encounter some strange goings-on in their bookstore. The unraveling of the mystery provides a rollicking plot while allowing Mifflin (and Morley) to expound on the delights of reading and the intricacy of the bookseller\'s art. Newly designed and typeset in a modern 6-by-9-inch format by Waking Lion Press.

Short excerpt: If you are ever in Brooklyn, that borough of superb sunsets and magnificent vistas of husband-propelled baby-carriages, it is to be hoped you may chance upon a quiet by-street where there is a very remarkable bookshop.
Customer Reviews:
The Haunted Bookshop.......2007-03-09
Truly enjoyed Morley's writing style. Particularly enjoyed reading of old Brooklyn as I live in the area. For me, the ending came too soon, which isn't a bad thing, just reflective of an enjoyable book that you'd like to keep on going. Am looking into more of his writings, a well as those mentioned within the text of the book.
Book Description
Young widow Penelope Thornton-McClure and her old Aunt Sadie are making ends meet by managing a mystery bookshop - a quaint Rhode Island landmark rumored to be haunted. Pen may not believe the rumors, but when a bestselling thriller writer reveals a secret about the store's link to a 1940s murder, then keels over dead right in the middle of the store, who gives her the first clue that it was murder? The bookstore's full-time ghost.
Customer Reviews:
A intersting read .......2007-09-22
At first I felt the book was slow going, but now that I've finished it, I can't wait to read the next one. I like how the ghost helps her and basically pushes her into being a detective for him. I can't wait to find out what happens next.
A Haunted Bookstore.......2007-03-07
This isn't your ordinary ghost. It's Jack Shepard, PI. Well, 50 years ago anyway. He was shot and killed in front of what is now Penelope McClure's bookstore called, Buy the Book. Penelope held a book signing with an author who choked and died in her store. Now her business is booming. While authorities are looking at her, Penelope and Jack's ghost are trying to solve the crime! Great first installment, I can't wait to get the next one.
Not bad for a first effort........2007-02-16
The premise for this book is certianly different, as we have a ghost of a long-dead P.I. working with the sleuth. Jack Shepard was a private investigator who was shot while investigating a case. The murder happened in a building in Quindicott, Rhode Island in 1949. His murder was never solved, and it left Jack's ghost haunting an old bookstore. When Penelope McClure takes over the store, she finds that she seems to be channelling Jack. The book is also different because it falls under the cozy genre, but with Jack's presence, there is a lot of hard-boiled there too. I found that I got past the far-fetched ghost, and really enjoyed the story. I will certainly read more.
Mike Hammer meets Jessica Fletcher.......2006-11-15
After the suicide of her husband, Penelope Thornton McClure takes the life insurance money and bails out her Aunt Sadie's failing bookshop in Quindicott, Rhode Island. With her investment comes half ownership in the business and unbeknownst to Penelope, a ghost. The ghost is the spirit of hard-boiled 1940's private eye Jack Shepard who was killed in the bookstore many years before. For some reason that he doesn't understand Jack is unable to leave the premises so there he languishes with nothing more to do than throw the occasional scare into anybody he takes a dislike to.
To boost business Penelope (Pen) creates a public events area in hopes of attracting touring authors to her store. Being in a small town though, she doesn't expect to draw the cream of the literary crop and is shocked when Timothy Brennan, one of the top selling mystery writers in the country announces that he is coming to Quindicott on the promotional tour for his new book "Shield of Justice." Shield" is the latest in Brennan's long running series of mysteries featuring detective Jack Shield who just happens to be based on the real life Jack Shepard. When Shepard arrives and begins his lecture Shepard's ghost is none too happy and lets his displeasure be known to anyone who will listen. Oddly, Pen is the only one who can hear him and she soon finds that not only can she hear Jack in her head but that he can also read her thoughts. Naturally she thinks that she is going crazy and only slowly she realizes that she indeed has a "haunted bookshop."
The mystery arrives when the obnoxious Brennan drops dead while giving his lecture. At first everyone assumes it was his bad heart but Jack assures Pen right from the start that it was murder. Once it becomes clear to everyone else that Brennan's death was indeed murder Pen becomes a prime suspect. Not only is her bookstore doing a booming business because of the death but also she is caught on camera handing the author the instrument of his death. Once Pen realizes that she is high on the suspect list she follows Jack's advice and begins to snoop and with Jack's expert help and advice she becomes quite the detective.
As with most first books in a series, this one spends a lot of time introducing the main characters and in this case those characters are realistic and believable. The mystery flows well and the reader is quickly drawn into this very well written story. Unlike many books in this genre there are very few loose ends and red herrings with the only exception being that most life insurance policies don't pay in the event of a suicide. There is also an occasional abrupt change in narration from first to third person that can be a little discomforting but this flaw is fairly minor and infrequent. Most importantly, this author quickly makes her readers care about Pen and her family so that one tends to really worry when they might be in trouble. This is an excellent start to what just might be a superb series.
enjoyed.......2006-11-03
i enjoyed this book, maybe because it was a bit different than most. the ghost being there helping solve the mystery was unusual and the author used her imagination. good read

Book Description
Morley's "Duet" follows one Roger Mifflin, an itinerant, literate pixie on his mission to bring books to the ordinary and elite alike in his bookstore-on-wheels. But love of books soon turns deeper as he encounters and eventually marries Helen, and fulfills his dream of opening a real bookshop (albeit "haunted") in Brooklyn. Wherein the booksellers become embroiled in a plot to assassinate the President of the United States. A must read for book lovers.
Customer Reviews:
A bit dated, but a must read for any booklover.......2007-08-07
1 - Parnassus on Wheels
A wonderful, short, simple tale. A good read for any booklover. You'll find yourself daydreaming of a time when you could have followed the Professor's lead and hit the road with a wagonload of books.
The book is set on the rural coastal area around NYC around the turn of the century, when books were still hard to come by away from the cities.
I highly recommend an edition with illustrations by Douglas Gorsline.
2 - The Haunted Bookshop
Interesting for any book (or bookshop) lover. A fun read, but a mediocre mystery. Loaded with stereotypes, but forgivable for the time period.
The story of a used bookshop in Brooklyn at the very end of WWI, and strange incidents that befall a young ad salesman who befriends the shop owners.
Good book, shoddy publication quality.......2001-12-07
These two classics are a wonderful read, but not in this edition. Never have I seen so many typos and misprints. It's like reading uncorrected page proofs. For a (price) paperback, the book should have been proofed! I ordered multiple copies as gifts but returned them because I'd be ashamed to give them to friends. I strongly recommend readers track down an older edition from a different publisher!
Two charming books for book lovers........2001-08-09
"Parnassus on Wheels," originally published in 1917, charmed me when I read it (in the 1950s), and is probably "the reason" why I became a librarian, and now a book supplier. (I'm not sure having a horse-drawn wagon and selling books that way, would be fun today, but it's still a charming book.)
THE book for bibliophiles.......2001-07-16
This is the first time I've seen both "Parnassis on Wheels" and its sequel, "The Haunted Bookshop", together in one volume. These are hard books to peg into a certain category - they are mainly conversation-driven, as opposed to being action-driven, but there *is* some adventure. I hate to say any more about them because I hate giving away storylines. I would not recommend this book to die-hard "action" or "romance" readers, though there is a little of both in these books... Bibliophiles would definitely enjoy these books. For example, if you liked "Bachelor Brothers' Bed and Breakfast" by Bill Richardson, you will like this book. Both are funny, charming, and light-hearted, and talk about (my favorite subject) books. If you love books, I think these two (Parnassis and Bookshop) will give you a delightful read.

Marginally interesting as a point in history.......2006-05-29
This book doesn't take long to read, and spends a bit too much time waxing philosophical about the virtues of booksellers. It does hold some value as an interesting glimpse into the world of the late teens/early twenties, but is probably not worth $8 for the privilege.
