An unsatisfying read.......2007-09-24
This book...for as exciting and promising as the back cover made it sound, it was disappointing.
Seeing Europe through the eyes of an unappreciative 17-year-old was not near as interesting as I thought it would be. It was an extreme let-down because the idea of this book and the premise had such promise...
It is extremely hard to describe this book. I proclaimed it "not that great" about half way through, but I wanted to get to the end because I had a lot invested in it by that time.
I guess the short story is that the book was just that: "not that great." The main character was not lovable in any way, she was devoid of personality, and with the exception of Richard, not one of the other characters in the book had any real "soul" to them that made them someone you wanted to read about.
I guess the conclusion is that this book was a stinker, and one that made me mad too. Books that do that make me upset.
Sorry for the scatterbrained review, but this is how this book left me feeling. Scatterbrained, drained, and unsatisfied.
cute pageturner.......2007-07-21
To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this book. I just picked it up because it had an interesting concept, and I ended up really enjoying it. My only problem was that I got slightly confused once or twice because of some things that weren't well explained or things that weren't explained enough. However, that wasn't enough of a problem to sway my opinion of this book. I thought it was a pretty original idea & I actually couldn't put it down.
A Good Read.......2007-05-07
This book was good and enjoying but not extremely exciting. As many people have said, the characters in this book are quite shallow. You can't ever really relate to them. I did enjoy this book but I doubt I would read it again.
An Absolutely Charming Adventure.......2007-04-27
I've been a reader of Maureen Johnson's blog for awhile now, but hadn't gotten to any of her books yet. On the insistence of others, I broke down and ordered 13 Little Blue Envelopes - Wow! I wish I'd picked this up sooner!
The plot itself is interesting, with the added bonus of being much different from most of the YA books on the shelves right now. Throughout the book, Johnson throws surprises and great chances for character development at the protagonist, Ginny, who shows fabulous arc through the book. Not only does she have travel opportunities that will leave readers wanting to hop on the next Trans-Atlantic, but her writing is fresh enough to keep the pages flying by as well.
Johnson is well known for being one of the most accessible, entertaining YA writers in the field right now. She definitely doesn't disappoint with Little Blue Envelopes - her concise, realistic prose and eye for charming, absurd details makes this a definite keeper. If you're looking for a fun, surprisingly moving book...this is the one for you!
13 Little Blue Envelopes.......2007-03-09
This was such a fun book to read, since it is fast-paced and always leaves me wondering what was going to come up next. It has just the right mixture of all the perfect teen elements: romance, family, travel, and a likeable narrator. While it was hard to understand at times, because Maureen Johnson seems to jump from place to place pretty quickly, and the narrator's thoughts aren't really made clear, I still enjoyed this book very much, and I think that any other teenager will like it too.

Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-10-16
When Virginia Blackstone (Ginny) receives the first blue envelope from her Aunt Peg in the mail, it sends her on an exciting, funny, and sometimes poignant adventure that readers will be delighted to join. The envelope contains $1,000 in cash, and the instructions to pick up a package of envelopes that start Ginny on a trip around Europe, tracing the steps of her eccentric Aunt. The instructions are specific; no cell phones, no maps, and Ginny can only open one envelope at a time, after she's completed each task in the previous letter.
Through the letters, Ginny learns more about what drove her Aunt to flee to Europe in pursuit of her art, and about her Aunt's last year of life, since Aunt Peg has passed away from a brain tumor by the time the first envelope arrives--and Ginny never got to say good-bye. Through her adventures, Ginny learns a lot about herself. Her own strength and ingenuity, her ability to forgive, and that she, too, can be an interesting person.
Some of the tasks seem impossible; find the one café in all of Paris where her Aunt spent a month sleeping behind the bar and decorating the café to pay her rent. Others are easier, at least on the surface; find a starving artist and be his mysterious benefactor. Readers will both laugh at some of Ginny's mishaps and cringe at some of her mistakes as the envelopes lead her around Europe.
Peopled with a strong cast of supporting characters--the cute playwright she meets in London, the annoying family of Americans with a "schedule" in Amsterdam, the crazy artist friends of her Aunt--the novel unfolds at a fast pace, while never losing its poignancy as Ginny retraces the steps of the Aunt she loved. Ms. Johnson has written an excellent and entertaining novel that I highly recommend.

A Great Introduction to Microscopy!.......2004-07-31
Along with Werner Nachtigall's "Exploring with the Microscope" this book is a great first book for the amateur microscopist. As a professional biologist who dabbles in amateur microscopy I have enjoyed both books. They do differ somewhat in their format. While Nachtigall's flows from some basic (and some more advanced) principles through examples of microorganisms, Eric Grave's book is divided into two parts, the first of which is a standard history of the microscope and fundamentals of techniques and the second of which tackles discoveries within the micro-world. The later has sections on such fascinating life forms as planaria, Paramecium, Didinium, Cyclops, symbiotic protozoa in insects and ruminants, Pilobolus (the sharp shooting fungus), cheese mites and rotifers. Both books are well written and carry the enthusiasm of the authors. Either would be a great gift for an amateur microscopist.
It is good to see "Discovering the Invisible" back in print. Phalarope Books produced a really neat series of titles for the amateur naturalist and it is now difficult to find most of them. Of these Grave's book is one of the best.
If you are a microscopists or known one this is one of two great introductory texts to choose from (why not get both!)
It's Back in Print.......2000-06-26
Discover the Invisible : A Naturalist's Guide to Using the Microscope was published in 1984. In 1991 Dover reissued it, changing the title to Using the Microscope: A Guide for Naturalists, updating the last short chapter, "Resources," and repositioning the color photographs from within the text to the front cover and the insides of back and front covers.
The book is divided into two parts. The first begins with a pleasant, informative history of microscopy and continues with chapters on choosing a microscope, learning to use it correctly, the different kinds of illumination for microscopy, and how to get started in photomicrography. The second part consists of matters more appealing to the naturalist, chapters comprised of short, specific and excellently illustrated essays --on how microscopic creatures eat, multiply, compete with and make use of one another, two little bits on microbial behavior, and two chapters on what visits to Yellowstone and the Petrified Forest can mean to the naturalist-microscopist. At the back of the book are notes and a short bibliography for each chapter, glossaries of microscopical and of biological terms, and a useful index.
Unless you're a collector, Using the Microscope: A Guide for Naturalists (the Dover paperback) is the edition to buy ... while it's still available.

Conveys a sense of the real excitement of this hobby........2001-04-25
Those of us who retain an interest in Nature, and a desire to look more closely into her marvels, may at some point find ourselves acquiring a microscope. Those who do so, however, unless they have prior training, will quickly find that the business of using a microscope properly is not as simple as it may seem and that some guidance is needed if one is to get the best results.
This is where Eric V. Grave steps in. His book, which is based on a course for amateur naturalists and non-science majors at the New York Microscopical Society, is the perfect book for the novice "micronaut" and is unique in conveying a sense of the real excitement this hobby can provide. The book, which was originally published under the title 'Discover the Invisible: A Naturalist's Guide to Using the Microscope' (Prentice Hall, 1984), is illustrated with large clear black-and-white photographs and line drawings, and its 200 well-printed pages, besides covering microscopy and the world of the naturalist, also include information about resources, a glossary, a bibliography, and an index.
In Part I, the author, after a brief account of the history of microscopy, goes on to describe the structure of the microscope, its various parts, and how they work together. He then explains how to set up a microscope, the use of special methods of illumination, and give us a list of minimum equipment for the beginner. There are also discussions of optics and the basics of microphotography. But since, as Grave points out, it isn't enough to master the microscope, for just as important is the art of handling the object to be observed, Chapter 4, 'Your Specimen,' is devoted to "microtechnique," the collection, handling, and preparation of actual specimens - crystals, plant tissues, insects, protozoa (my own special interest), and even bacteria.
Things really come alive in Part II of the book, which is devoted to a series of truly fascinating accounts of some of the sights that await the novice micronaut, and I would agree with the reviewer who felt that Part II should be read first. Both plant and animal life are covered, but whereas many books which contain discussions of microorganisms are content to simply give us descriptions of the structure of selected organisms, Grave goes much further and gives, in addition, illustrated and lovingly detailed blow-by-blow accounts of the amazing talents, behavior, and lifestyles of a whole series of critters. We are shown them loving, murdering, gorging, cannibalizing, reproducing, hitching rides, and zipping around while employing principles we more usually associate with speedboats and submarines. Some of their abilities seem little less than miraculous.
Graves clearly loves his subject. His enthusiasm is infectious and at least one of the book's readers is on record as having gone on to take up a career in protozoology. A few hours spent with 'Using the Microscope' and you'll easily understand why. It's very special and is a perfect complement to Werner Nachtigall's 'Exploring With the Microscope.' Both, in their different ways, are informative and inspiring, and the enthusiast will want to read both.
This One's a Bargain.......2000-06-25
The first chapter of Using the Microscope: A Guide for Naturalists gave me the special pleasure produced only by authors who write with clarity and grace. The book is a 1991 Dover reissue of Eric Grave's 1984 Prentice Hall title, Discover the Invisible. The main changes are an update of the supply sources listed in the last short chapter, "Resources," and a repositioning of color photographs from within the text to the front cover and the insides of back and front covers. At the back of the book are notes and a short (and now out-of-date) bibliography for each chapter, glossaries of microscopical and of biological terms, and a good index. At its price, this book is a bargain.
The organization of Using the Microscope: A Guide for Naturalists is simple, a "Part One" that begins with a pleasant, informative history of microscopy and continues with chapters on choosing a microscope, the various kinds of illumination for microscopy, how to get started in photomicrography, and in general just what the title says, using the microscope. "Part Two" consists of matters more appealing to the naturalist, chapters comprised of short, specific and excellently illustrated essays --on how microscopic creatures eat, multiply, compete with and make use of one another, two little bits on microbial behavior, and two chapters on what visits to Yellowstone and the Petrified Forest can mean to (what the title says) the naturalist-microscopist.
Now, if only the volume were organized differently! If you want truly to enjoy this book, begin at the beginning and read about the early microscopists, and then hurry on to "Part Two" to find out why the rest of "Part One" is worth reading, maybe not today, but when you want to see for yourself what Grave's photographs show (different kinds of illumination permit one to see different structures and processes) or when you want to photograph the whole process of a paramecium becoming two paramecia or a water flea becoming a hydra's dinner (and have your photomicrographs repay the time you spend making the pictures). I do not want to get into photomicrography, but I learned from Grave's images of a Colpoda that I'd been looking at separate, individual stages of this organism's reproductive process. Learning that--from a chapter in "Part Two"--almost surely influenced my decision to equip my microscope for Dark Field illumination, and I did that by going back to Grave's technical instructions in "Part One."
In words of one syllable: Buy this book, but read "Part Two" first.

Book Description
ParCFD 2001, the thirteenth international conference on Parallel Computational Fluid Dynamics took place in Egmond aan Zee, the Netherlands, from May 21-23, 2001. The specialized, high-level ParCFD conferences are organized yearly on traveling locations all over the world. A strong back-up is given by the central organization located in the USA
http://www.parcfd.org.
These proceedings of ParCFD 2001 represent 70% of the oral lectures presented at the meeting. All published papers were subjected to a refereeing process, which resulted in a uniformly high quality.
The papers cover not only the traditional areas of the ParCFD conferences, e.g. numerical schemes and algorithms, tools and environments, interdisciplinary topics, industrial applications, but, following local interests, also environmental and medical issues. These proceedings present an up-to-date overview of the state of the art in parallel computational fluid dynamics.

Book Description
Fifty years after the arrival of Columbus, at the height of Spain's conquest of the West Indies, Spanish bishop and colonist Bartolomé de las Casas dedicated his Brevísima Relación de la Destruición de las Indias to Philip II of Spain. An impassioned plea on behalf of the native peoples of the West Indies, the Brevísima Relación catalogues in horrific detail atrocities it attributes to the king's colonists in the New World. The result is a withering indictment of the conquerors that has cast a 500-year shadow over the subsequent history of that world and the European colonization of it.
Andrew Hurley's daring new translation dramatically foreshortens that 500 years by reversing the usual priority of a translation; rather than bring the Brevísima Relación to the reader, it brings the reader to the Brevísima Relaciónnot as it is, but as it might have been, had it been originally written in English. The translator thus allows himself no words or devices unavailable in English by 1560, and in so doing reveals the prophetic voice, urgency and clarity of the work, qualities often obscured in modern translations. An Introduction by Franklin Knight, notes, a map, and a judicious set of Related Readings offer further aids to a fresh appreciation of this foundational historical and literary work of the New World and European engagement with it.
