Discover the invisible: A naturalist's guide to using the microscope (PHalarope books)

A Great Introduction to Microscopy!.......2004-07-31
It's Back in Print.......2000-06-26
The book is divided into two parts. The first begins with a pleasant, informative history of microscopy and continues with chapters on choosing a microscope, learning to use it correctly, the different kinds of illumination for microscopy, and how to get started in photomicrography. The second part consists of matters more appealing to the naturalist, chapters comprised of short, specific and excellently illustrated essays --on how microscopic creatures eat, multiply, compete with and make use of one another, two little bits on microbial behavior, and two chapters on what visits to Yellowstone and the Petrified Forest can mean to the naturalist-microscopist. At the back of the book are notes and a short bibliography for each chapter, glossaries of microscopical and of biological terms, and a useful index.
Unless you're a collector, Using the Microscope: A Guide for Naturalists (the Dover paperback) is the edition to buy ... while it's still available.

Conveys a sense of the real excitement of this hobby........2001-04-25
This is where Eric V. Grave steps in. His book, which is based on a course for amateur naturalists and non-science majors at the New York Microscopical Society, is the perfect book for the novice "micronaut" and is unique in conveying a sense of the real excitement this hobby can provide. The book, which was originally published under the title 'Discover the Invisible: A Naturalist's Guide to Using the Microscope' (Prentice Hall, 1984), is illustrated with large clear black-and-white photographs and line drawings, and its 200 well-printed pages, besides covering microscopy and the world of the naturalist, also include information about resources, a glossary, a bibliography, and an index.
In Part I, the author, after a brief account of the history of microscopy, goes on to describe the structure of the microscope, its various parts, and how they work together. He then explains how to set up a microscope, the use of special methods of illumination, and give us a list of minimum equipment for the beginner. There are also discussions of optics and the basics of microphotography. But since, as Grave points out, it isn't enough to master the microscope, for just as important is the art of handling the object to be observed, Chapter 4, 'Your Specimen,' is devoted to "microtechnique," the collection, handling, and preparation of actual specimens - crystals, plant tissues, insects, protozoa (my own special interest), and even bacteria.
Things really come alive in Part II of the book, which is devoted to a series of truly fascinating accounts of some of the sights that await the novice micronaut, and I would agree with the reviewer who felt that Part II should be read first. Both plant and animal life are covered, but whereas many books which contain discussions of microorganisms are content to simply give us descriptions of the structure of selected organisms, Grave goes much further and gives, in addition, illustrated and lovingly detailed blow-by-blow accounts of the amazing talents, behavior, and lifestyles of a whole series of critters. We are shown them loving, murdering, gorging, cannibalizing, reproducing, hitching rides, and zipping around while employing principles we more usually associate with speedboats and submarines. Some of their abilities seem little less than miraculous.
Graves clearly loves his subject. His enthusiasm is infectious and at least one of the book's readers is on record as having gone on to take up a career in protozoology. A few hours spent with 'Using the Microscope' and you'll easily understand why. It's very special and is a perfect complement to Werner Nachtigall's 'Exploring With the Microscope.' Both, in their different ways, are informative and inspiring, and the enthusiast will want to read both.
This One's a Bargain.......2000-06-25
The organization of Using the Microscope: A Guide for Naturalists is simple, a "Part One" that begins with a pleasant, informative history of microscopy and continues with chapters on choosing a microscope, the various kinds of illumination for microscopy, how to get started in photomicrography, and in general just what the title says, using the microscope. "Part Two" consists of matters more appealing to the naturalist, chapters comprised of short, specific and excellently illustrated essays --on how microscopic creatures eat, multiply, compete with and make use of one another, two little bits on microbial behavior, and two chapters on what visits to Yellowstone and the Petrified Forest can mean to (what the title says) the naturalist-microscopist.
Now, if only the volume were organized differently! If you want truly to enjoy this book, begin at the beginning and read about the early microscopists, and then hurry on to "Part Two" to find out why the rest of "Part One" is worth reading, maybe not today, but when you want to see for yourself what Grave's photographs show (different kinds of illumination permit one to see different structures and processes) or when you want to photograph the whole process of a paramecium becoming two paramecia or a water flea becoming a hydra's dinner (and have your photomicrographs repay the time you spend making the pictures). I do not want to get into photomicrography, but I learned from Grave's images of a Colpoda that I'd been looking at separate, individual stages of this organism's reproductive process. Learning that--from a chapter in "Part Two"--almost surely influenced my decision to equip my microscope for Dark Field illumination, and I did that by going back to Grave's technical instructions in "Part One."
In words of one syllable: Buy this book, but read "Part Two" first.

Book Description
ParCFD 2001, the thirteenth international conference on Parallel Computational Fluid Dynamics took place in Egmond aan Zee, the Netherlands, from May 21-23, 2001. The specialized, high-level ParCFD conferences are organized yearly on traveling locations all over the world. A strong back-up is given by the central organization located in the USA
These proceedings of ParCFD 2001 represent 70% of the oral lectures presented at the meeting. All published papers were subjected to a refereeing process, which resulted in a uniformly high quality.
The papers cover not only the traditional areas of the ParCFD conferences, e.g. numerical schemes and algorithms, tools and environments, interdisciplinary topics, industrial applications, but, following local interests, also environmental and medical issues. These proceedings present an up-to-date overview of the state of the art in parallel computational fluid dynamics.

An Account, Much Abbreviated, of the Destruction of the Indies, and Related Texts
Franklin W. Knight , and Andrew Hurley Manufacturer: Hackett Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0872206254 |
Book Description
Fifty years after the arrival of Columbus, at the height of Spain's conquest of the West Indies, Spanish bishop and colonist Bartolomé de las Casas dedicated his Brevísima Relación de la Destruición de las Indias to Philip II of Spain. An impassioned plea on behalf of the native peoples of the West Indies, the Brevísima Relación catalogues in horrific detail atrocities it attributes to the king's colonists in the New World. The result is a withering indictment of the conquerors that has cast a 500-year shadow over the subsequent history of that world and the European colonization of it.Andrew Hurley's daring new translation dramatically foreshortens that 500 years by reversing the usual priority of a translation; rather than bring the Brevísima Relación to the reader, it brings the reader to the Brevísima Relaciónnot as it is, but as it might have been, had it been originally written in English. The translator thus allows himself no words or devices unavailable in English by 1560, and in so doing reveals the prophetic voice, urgency and clarity of the work, qualities often obscured in modern translations. An Introduction by Franklin Knight, notes, a map, and a judicious set of Related Readings offer further aids to a fresh appreciation of this foundational historical and literary work of the New World and European engagement with it.
