Book Description
Bestiaries are a particularly characteristic product of medieval England, and give a unique insight into the medieval mind. Richly illuminated and lavishly produced, they were luxury objects for noble families. Their three-fold purpose was to provide a natural history of birds, beasts and fishes, to draw moral examples from animal behaviour (the industrious bee, the stubborn ass), and to reveal a mystical meaning - the phoenix, for instance, as a symbol of Christ's resurrection. This Bestiary, MS Bodley 764, was produced around the middle of the thirteenth century and is of singular beauty and interest. The lively illustrations have the freedom and naturalistic quality of the later Gothic style, and make dazzling use of colour. This book reproduces the 136 illuminations to the same size and in the same place as the original manuscript, fitting the text around them. Richard Barber's translation from the original Latin is a delight to read, capturing both the serious intent of the manuscript and its charm. RICHARD BARBER has written many books on the history of and life in the middle ages, from his Somerset Maugham Award-winning The Knight and Chivalry, by way of biographies of Henry II and the Black Prince, to an anthology of Arthurian literature from England, France and Germany, Arthurian Legends, and an account of the historical Arthur, King Arthur: Hero and Legend.
Customer Reviews:
An affordable treat for bibliophiles.......2002-05-07
There is something quintessentially appealing about the rare reproduction which manages to preserve so much of the spirit of the original text. The translation, which is quite clear, is embedded with the original illuminations found in the manuscript, in their original size and location relative to the page. The result is surprisingly refreshing; the decision to eschew modern layout conventions was a wise one. This is not a scholarly edition per se, and some may quibble with occasional word choice. But this medievalist, for one, has no problem with such decisions to leave out mention of the Physiologus; true translation is as much art as science, and anyone doing serious research on this book would (should) be using the original Latin anyway. This is a highly successful translation, and frankly a beautiful book, the sort that should occupy a well-worn spot on shelves of scholars and enthusiasts alike.
Good little book........2001-04-11
I don't know if the other reviewer is a child or simply has the intellect of one, but there is no such thing as a manticore. I hope you didn't say that in your report...
Anyway, 'Bestiary' is a decent resource for scholars interested in late medieval English bestiaries, and an excellent work for the interested general public. Amazingly sharp and clear facsimiles of the original illuminations are placed in their original places in relation to the text, and the translation is generally limpid.
Unfortunately, it is not always accurate. The more I studied the Bodlein Bestiary, the more I wished I had the original Latin text--there were many places where I wondered exactly how much liberty the translator took with his source. For example, he replaces ('translates) the standard introductory phrase 'Physiologus says' with 'the naturalists say that'--incredibly irresponsible scholarship. It may make the work more palatable for popular tastes, but such changes are anathema to the medievalist. I often also wonder how many changes he made to the text in the interest of keeping all the illustrations in their original places, as this also requires the translated text to fill a proportional area of the page.
All in all, I recommend it highly as a taste of the genre--a fascinating and rich one for those interested in the history of illumination, natural history, philosophy, and moral instruction. The miniatures and illuminations are beautiful and nicely reproduced, and while the text is lacking, it is the best we have at the moment.
this book rocks.......2000-04-22
This book is so informational on bestiary and its fun to read too. It will definitely help you if your doing a report on it. The illistrations are amazing! I never thought that there was such thing as a Manticore. I recommend all of those beast lovers to go out and buy this book. It will help you alot on reports. Or if you just dont have a book to read and you happen to pick up this one. Its wonderful.

Book Description
Fourteen-year-old Jennie's life is turning upside down. Her father has walked out, and her anguished mother seeks solace in pills. Her best friend practically abandons her to be with a boyfriend. It seems like Jennie's real best friend is her diary. Then she meets Mr. Johnstone, the substitute math teacher. Jennie has never met such a charismatic teacher. She feels honored when Mr. J. seems to single her out for special attention, and begins to fantasize about him as her boyfriend. When Mr. J. first reveals his feelings for her, she is thrilled by the relationship that grows outside the classroom walls. Then, slowly, Jennie's diary becomes a record of her loneliness, pain, and confusion. Will it also offer her a way to escape from this treacherous love?

at least im nice.......2006-07-30
unlike all the ppl that says that this book sucks, i say that this book is probably the 2 best. if u dont like this book then why bother writing about it in the first place?!!!?!?!?! this book is about a fourteen year old girl named jennie who was seduce by her substitute teacher named Mr. Johnstohn(if that is how u spell it) he would give comments to get jennie to like him. jennie never relize that he was using her for pictures of hwer partly naked.
if u where disappointed that this was written by beatrice but not an unknown girl well go get a f***** life!!!
bearly there.......2006-03-10
Despite the fact that I'm VERY disapointed Beatrice Sparks wrote this and not an "anonomous teenager" I still found it pretty good. It shows how you can get sucked into that kind of thing, it also makes you aware of that [frustuated] teacher( there's at least one). I say it would have been better if it REALLY written by a teenager!
umm...........2006-02-14
I had buy this book because it sounded very juicy when i read a little info of what it was about. i didnt mind the ratings, so i just baught it; a dissappointment to say the least. [sigh]
The original James Frey .......2006-02-02
Brought to you from the author of Go Ask Alice... yeah, right.
This is probably not the first great hoax in publishing history, but I'm sure it's one of the most successful.
In spite of the fact that the actual source of this book has long been revealed and known, the publishing company continues to brazenly assert that this is a genuine document. It's as ridiculous as the continuing insistence that The Amityville Horror is a true story, too.
It should take any literate adult no more than one and one half pages to determine that this is neither the language nor the syntax of an adolescent/young adult.
It is a known fact that this shameless propoganda was the work of Beatrice Sparks, a Mormom activist who created an entire series of these books, in which children are destroyed by the evils of homosexuality, premarital sex, drug abuse, satanism, etc.
Without diminishing what positive impact this book, or any of the others, may have had on impressionable youth, and without condemning its good intentions (is anyone in favor of having AIDS?), these books are complete rubbish.
Like Mr. Frey, the intentions are not the point.
The point is that these books are being published as nonfiction.
And they are lies.
Okay..........2005-03-07
I have read the following diaries by Beatrice Sparks: Go Ask Alice, Annie's Baby, Kim: Empty Inside, It Happened to Nancy, and Jay's Journal. I didn't think this book was going to disappont me like Kim: Empty Inside did.
This is probaly the 2nd worst book of the series that I've read. The character is boring and it doesn't seem there much character development, for her its sort of like an emotional rollercoaster. She scolds herself for being bad and sad that the teacher is gone, then when he comes back shes all cheery, it just doesn't make sense. I wish I could have seen this diary in its full form and not edited. This book seemed to say the same thing over and over, "I met her Johnstone, we had to act like we didn't like each other..." stuff exactley like that everday when she helped him in summer school. I found it boring. At some point while I was reading it felt as if a chore to just get through it. The most suspenseful part only took me about 7 minutes to read. I would not recommend this, I would get Go Ask Alice, It Happened to Nancy, or Annie's Baby.

Hierarchy Theory; The Challenge of Complex Systems. (International Library of Systems Theory and Philosophy)
ASIN: 0231060165 |
Book Description
A bold effort to find a functional and transactional framework for synthetic evolutionary theory, Evolving Hierarchical Systems seeks to represent the order in nature by discriminating a hierarchical system and defining the logical boundaries of the concepts inherent in this system (such as time, causality, complexity, partitioning, scale, and polarity).
Salthe's basic assumption is that the world is unlimitedly complex. Biology and some other sciences, such as geology and applied physics, have become entangled in this complexity with, the author writes, "as little ability to negotiate it as a fly in a spider's web." He argues that biological nature in particular is undercharacterized in our representations, and because of that so is the rest of nature.
The book first describes the principles of hierarchical structure and discusses the process of discovering the relevant aspects of the hierarchy of nature. It then brings in the concept of self-reference and moves onto an interpretation and explanation of organic evolution in this framework. While Salthe's focus is in biology, the outline of a hierarchy theory he presents is asserted to be a "philosophical machine" that can be applied as a hermeneutical tool to many fields of inquiry concerned with change in complex systems.
Felt by the author to also be a response to Jacques Monod's Chance and Necessity, this book is a significant statement on the hierarchical organization of the surface of the earth. It is provocative reading not only for biologists but also for anthropologists, sociologists, geologists, and scientists interested in general systems research.

Book Description
This new book is about multicomponent flow modeling and analysis. Multicomponent reactive flow arises in various engineering applications such as combustion, crystal growth, atmospheric reentry, and chemical reactors. The purpose of this book is first to give a detailed presentation of the governing equations--including the expression of multicomponent transport coefficients--obtained from the kinetic theory of gases. We also discuss symmetric formulations of the governing equations--which are important from a theoretical and a numerical point of view--and we investigate equilibrium flows. A second purpose is to analyse the mathematical properties of the model. More specifically, to investigate thermochemistry properties and the structure of multicoomponent transport. Finally, the book discusses the numerical simulation of multicomponent reactive flows and discusses the problems associated with multiple time scales and multiple space scales and we present complex chemistry flame simulations.
The new aspects are the structure of multicomponent transport fluxes, the accurate expression of transport coefficients, the rigorous mathematical results, and the interdisciplinary aspects. The book will give a complete interdisciplinary overview of modeling science and will be of interest to engineers, mathematicians, numericists and scientists.

Book Description
This ground-breaking and authoritative volume is an indispensable reference book to accompany the study of Virgil. It is a multi-authored guide aimed at students and anyone with an interest in great literature and the classical heritage. The chapters contain essential information while also offering fresh and original insights into the poems and their author. Emphasis is given to the responses to Virgil over the centuries, particularly by other creative artists.
Customer Reviews:
Read Virgil in Isolation from this Book .......2005-04-25
This so-called Companion to Virgil offers little to students of the poet, and certainly nothing to general or curious readers. Very plainly, this volume is completely animated with theory--theories which are neither just to Virgil nor compatible to the Virgilian tradition. This "companion" is ultra-modern in approach, so it is anachronistic in effect. Virgil, his devotees, his commentators, his imitators, and his worthy translators, would not comprehend, nor desire to comprehend, the methods strewn through the pages of this volume. Read Virgil in isolation from this book, and with the reverence that is his due; and if this is not sufficient, then seek the guidance of the ancients or that of their successors, the Humanists.
Hard for general reader: too technical & theoretical........1999-06-30
General readers may well be confused & misled by the introduction to this book, which indulges in what is known as "reception theory": according to this theory, Virgil's reception by readers through the ages has been marked by partiality & bias, which the present editor sets out to expose. He forgets that he, too, is a reader with an outlook rooted in a specific (our own) time. His own limitations as a reader become apparent when he produces a confused & reductive essay on Virgil's first major work, The Book of Bucolics (also known as eclogues) -- a source for the tradition of pastoral poetry in the West. Other scholars will no doubt find other essays to praise or blame in such a wide range, but no one, I think, will admire the theoretical posturing & self-involvement of the editorial frame. Those wishing a fuller discussion of issues raised by this book may reach me at the appended address.
