BEACH SURVIVAL GUIDE HITS THE MARK.......2003-08-28
Dr. Beach's Survival Guide is a terrific book that really hits the mark! The book is small, informative, easy to read, and adroitly uses simple but effective diagrams and charts to relay concepts to the reader. I would think that this guide is a "must read" for anyone contemplating a beach vacation. The book addresses widely-held beach mythology and clarifies many misconceptions about beaches, waves, currents, common beach dangers (such as sharks, etc.), and a host of other related topics. Seldom can you purchase such a wealth of information at such a reasonable price. This book should be on every out-doorsman's bookshelf!
A great book from "Dr. Beach.".......2003-08-18
This is another excellent book from Dr. Beach, one of the country's foremost authorities on coastal processes. This book is a fine introduction to the hazards at the beach. His chapter on rip currents is especially interesting and informative. Anyone who ventures onto the beach and into the water should read this section in order to recognize the telltale signs of a rip current.
Interesting and useful book.......2003-07-18
This book is full of interesting info and useful tidbits about the dangers and hazards of going to the beach. Some of this I already knew, but much of it was new. For example, when I was growing up in L.A. as a beach bum, I learned that you can spot riptides by standing on the cliff or getting a little elevation, such as by climbing up a lifeguard stand, and looking for a triangle of white water pointing out to sea. They could be anywhere from 50 feet wide to hundreds of yards wide, but they were detectable if you knew what to look for. I also learned that most sharks don't like the murky water where the waves are breaking and stirring up the sand, and to head for that if there was trouble. Better yet, just get out of the water. I learned how to recognized each shark species by their fins and which ones to get out of the water if they appeared, such as bluefins, which are also known man-eaters in addition to the infamous great whites. Interestingly enough, technically great whites are only "man-biters" rather than mean-eaters. They usually bite humans by mistake looking for seals, their favorite food, and so spit it out. Of course, that's not much consolation to the person at that point. Some of these attacks are because a swimmer in a wet suit looks a lot like a seal with their dark, blubbery skin. It's also probably not a good idea to decorate the bottom and sides of your sea kayak with pictures of seals, as I saw once. :-)
Having been at the beach many times and body-surfed some pretty big waves occasionally, I've had a few harrowing experiences myself. I once had the experience of being in an undertoe that actually pulled me underneath the water, but only for about 5 seconds. It was still a little scary. One time I stupidly tried to ride an 18-foot wave and almost got killed because the wave was what the Aussies call "a dumper" and it smashed me on the bottom. You should avoid fast-breaking dumpers because of that. I think the biggest wave that's safe to ride for most people is probably about 10 feet, unless you've got a belly board, which can outrun the break. Wearing one swim fin (yes, only one is needed, because it's inconvenient to have two fins on) is a trick experienced body-surfers use, that's also helpful for catching waves. Back in the 60's, I saw TV footage of this crazy guy belly-boarding 30-foot waves at Waimea. Talk about guts.
The beach that's the king of the riptides is Sunset Beach in Hawaii. Many people have died there because of rips, and it's capable of pulling you under, too. Once it pulled 3 surfers under at the same time, who unfortunately drowned. One thing to remember is if you "wipe out," be sure to tuck and roll up into a ball. One thing that happens to tourists and neophytes at Sunset is that when they go "over the falls," they don't tuck and then get slammed face first into the bottom, breaking their necks. This happened recently to a young couple that was on their honeymoon, and it's happened a number of times to inexperienced swimmers and body-surfers before. So be careful about that.
Speaking of getting pulled under, I once had the idea for a little invention, a small oxygen cylinder that would weigh maybe 5 or 10 pounds max but that would contain enough air to allow you to breath for a few minutes, if you were going swimming or body- surfing, especially at a potentially dangerous beach like Sunset. Not sure if it would be practical, but I never did follow up on it to find out. But there were a number of times when I wiped out on a big wave and didn't get to take a full breath before I got slammed under, and then I got held down for 20-30 seconds or so, or had to stay down that long because of other breaking waves, and I was almost out of air a couple of times before I was able to surface, and that would have been nice to have.
Another odd fact is that the reason why your feet itch after a day at the beach, at least on western U.S. beaches. It's not because of the hot sand and the salt water. It's because of the pieces of jellyfish, especially man-'o-war, that wash up on the beach, and can still irritate your feet even after days on the sand.
Well, if I haven't scared you off completely from going to the beach again, this is a great little book to learn about all the hazards and dangers. Good luck and happy beach-going!
a great book for the beach!.......2003-07-07
If you're a regular beach-goer like I am, this little book is a gold mine. Although not big, it's filled with interesting information about beaches, sharks, and other things that can mess up your beach vacation. While the shark section is a real eye-opener, its all the details about how beaches really work that I liked most. Who would have thought there would be so much to know about our favorite summer vacation spots? I guess if anyone would know about beaches, it's Dr. Beach! This is a great little book that's now a permanent part of my beach gear.

Good Times.......2007-01-11
I cannot wait to see what happens in the following book, Great Read.
Witches and Vampires and Elvis, Oh My!.......2007-01-04
Fran just wants to be a typical teenager. Unfortunately this is impossible since her mother has decided to take Fran away from her school and friends so that they can join a traveling carnival of psychics, mediums and magicians that can do real magic. Even more distressing to Fran is her secret ability which gives her way more in common with the carnival workers than she likes. However, someone is stealing from the fair and might just shut it down. Just as Fran begins to think she might get her wish to go home she meets Ben, a very hunky vampire with a very personal interest in Fran. Ben, combined with Fran's surprising new pet horse, Tesla, are now making Fran second guess her desire to be anywhere but where she is. But, can Fran find the thief before the fair is shut down for good?
I can't believe that Got Fangs? has escaped my vampire obsessive notice for this long. With a mixture of adventure, mystery and romance I found I really enjoyed this story very much. I found the characters to be interesting and well written and Katie Maxwell certainly makes a wonderful addition to my list of favorite young adult vampire genre authors.
OMFG!!.......2006-11-18
THIS WAS SUCH AN INTERESTING READ.
This book is about a girl named Fran and how she wants to be normal, yet a gorgeous vampire nick named Ben is smitten by her. The read was adorable as far as YA books go, but Fran did upset me because there is so much a man can take. I just wanted to slap here, but I still loved her character. And, Ben was magnificent, so patient and adorable with Fran. Ahhhh!
a new look at vampires.......2006-08-14
Fran has always wanted a "normal" life, but when your mom is a witch, that's just not going to happen. Especially if said witch has dragged you out of school for the year and has you traveling Europe with her-- her and the GothFaire, that is. By the way, a GothFaire is a traveling group of witches, magicians, psychics, and other what are commonly refered to as weirdos. But when Benedikt joins GothFaire, Fran thinks things might be looking up, because he is completely hot. Hot enough to overlook the fact that he is a vampire, and she is supposed to redeem his soul. Despite all that, it's nice to have someone not think she's a freak, for a change, even if she is the most normal one with the Faire. And his kissing isn't half-bad either. Katie Maxwell employs her usual humor to something not usually thought of as humorous: vampires, and the result is magical.
fangtastic.......2006-01-09
How can you be normal if you can tell what people are thinking just by touching them, your mother is a witch, and you had to leave your home in Oregan to travel around Europe with a GothFaire, where everyone has strange powers? You can't, as Fran is reakizing. She's just trying to get through the next couple of months without becoming scared for life. Then she meets Benedict-her best friend's brother. He's totally hot-for a 312 year old vampire. Well, OK, Fran can handle that-until he informs her that she is his Beloved-the only person who can redeem his soul. Great! Now Fran is stuck at the Freak Faire, trying to cover up her own power, with a gorgeous vampire trailing her around, trying to protect her while at the same time infuriating her with his macho " I am a vampire, I will protect you" deal. To make matters even worse, someone is stealing from the Faire, and Fran has to use her powers to find out who the culprit is, while at the same time trying not to fall for Ben. Will Fran ever be normal?

Book Description
Introduction to Modern Virology has been an established student text for over 25 years. Providing an integrated account of the subject across different host systems, with an emphasis on human and animal viruses, this book covers the field of virology from molecular biology to disease processes using a unique systems approach. Featuring an all new art program in full color, the new edition has been updated throughout, and reorganized into thematic sections on the fundamental nature of viruses, their growth in cells, their interactions with the host organism and their role as agents of human disease. There is a new chapter on Human Viral Disease and rapidly developing areas, such as the use of viruses as gene therapy vectors, have been included. The 6th edition is even more accessible, now including key points and integrative questions in every chapter, as well as text boxes emphasizing take-home messages, evidence underpinning the main concepts, and further information for more advanced readers. Prevention and therapy, evolution and emerging viruses receive particular attention and specific chapters address the major infectious challenges posed by HIV, pandemic influenza and BSE. This highly accessible text provides ideal reading for all undergraduate and postgraduate students of biology and medicine wishing to study virology.
Customer Reviews:
Good Information, Bad Organization.......2006-05-10
Granted virology is not the most organized branch of science, the author could have done a much better job organizing the information. At many times through out this book I felt lost, not because I didn't understand the information (if you've taken molecular bio virology will be a much easier course) but because I couldn't figure out how this example fit into the big picture. Later on after finishing a couple of chapters I had to go back through my notes, rearrange everything, and add notes to my notes.
On the good side, there was a lot of helpful information and background on the experiments used to assertain this information.
All you need to start this fascinating subject.......1999-07-11
Virology is not the easiest of subjects to consider studying so it was with some trepidation that I ordered this book. My confidence was well founded as it is in every way superb. Chapters include definitions of viruses, lab techniques, biochemistry, processes of infection, virus-host interactions, vaccines, evolution of viruses and focus chapters on specific viruss/groups. Every page was fascinating and ,relatively easy to grasp if read in page order (though this is not a book for the complete layman, 'A' level biology or chemistry will be useful if not essential). Did you know that ME is caused by a virus, or that seals can catch human flu, or that at laest two infectious particle SMALLER than viruses exist? Read this book!

Nice and well organized introduction to a difficult subject.......2000-04-12
The book is a very nice introduction to the subject of Models and Decompositions of operators. In reality, it is a post-introductory book. Anyone that has already studied operator Theory in Hilbert spaces and wants a deeper understanding of this subject, should have a look here, mainly because the book coherently organizes this subject that would otherwise require a large bibliographical research. Models and Decompositons are looked as a sub-product of the search for the "Holy Graal" of operator theory: The Invariant Subspace Problem. Although it is not a book about that subject, it is certainly a relevant book to anyone entering that field, because it mentions relatively recent results that were previously conjectures in that area. Particularly interesting, in my opinion, are chapters 7 and 8. Chapter 7, called "Applications", in which the theory developed in the previous chapters is applied and many interesting related problems, some of them still open, relative to strong and weak stability of operators are mentioned. Chapter 8 discusses the problem of similarity to contractions, and leaves the reader with two related open questions.

Christopher Morley's unforgettably weird classic tale of adventure on a traveling bookstore called Parnassus, drawn by a steed called Pegasus. Not to be missed. A great family READ ALOUD.......2006-07-05
I orginally found this book in my grandfather's bookcase in the mid 1950s. It has been my all time favorite book ever since. Christopher Morley is an early feminist...Helen is a role model. It is a treasure and great fun to read aloud to anyone in the mood to laugh and be charmed by an enchanting story.
Great rainy saturday escape.......2006-05-01
Are you wishing to take a break from heavy reading? Want something short and sweet to kill a few hours on an airplane? Then this book is for you! Don't be put off by the original publish date - it could have been written this year. A simple tale, simply told, of a delightful few characters and a rolling bookstore on wheels, Parnassus on Wheels is just a fun and uplifting little book to read. No complex sub-plots, no surprise endings, just a simple story that is well told. I enjoyed this book a lot, right down to the predictable happy ending. It was a very nice break from the other stuff I've been reading, took only an afternoon to read, and I highly recommend it for what it is - a fun little story. 5 out of 5
English Major's Sweet Read.......2005-08-03
If you just want a good, quick yarn, in a historic setting, but not too long ago, Parnassus will do the trick. I bought a beat-up, very old and soiled copy of Parnassus on Wheels from the outside bin of a used book store. I was attracted by the title alone. It's the story of how the retiring owner of a turn-of-the-century horse-drawn bookmobile persuades a dutiful author's sister to step away from her housekeeping life to be a countryside book peddler. Adventure and romance ensues. I read it in one afternoon. It is not Henry Esmond, Middlemarch or any of my other epic favorites, but I can't seem to forget it, and recommend it to friends whenever I get a chance. It was just a pleasure to read. It's a splendid little gift to yourself!
Wonderful Little Book.......2004-11-18
This one was a joy to read. Like one reviewer said "another book about books." (My, I do love those). This is a absolute delight to read though. It is funny, flows well and most of all, is highly entertaining. So many works written near or at the turn of the last century are burried, seldom read and difficult to find. It is a pitty. There are so many wonderful, little known works out there, that simply are not in the public eye as they deserve to be. This is one of them. Highly recommend this one.
A bibliophile's delight.......2004-11-17
Gutenberg made the printed word available to the masses, but that doesn't mean that everybody bothered. That problem fuels "Parnassus on Wheels," a sweet little story about books and an unlikely romance, between a quirky bookseller and a stodgy spinster.
Andrew McGill became an unexpected literary hit when he wrote a book called "Paradise Regained" about a farmer's rural life. For his second book, he went trudging around the countryside for more material, leaving his middle-aged sister Helen to stay home and keep house for him. But one day a strange little man arrives at Helen's home, in a bookshop on wheels. The odd Roger Mifflin wants to sell Andrew his Parnassus -- his portable bookshop -- and intends to wait until Andrew returns.
Desperate to keep her brother from vanishing into the sunset, Helen takes her savings and buys the Parnassus herself. Then, out of regret for the life she has never gotten to experience off the farm, Helen decides to spend some time driving the Parnassus around the countryside. And as Roger teaches her about books and their importance, she begins to see just how a book -- any book -- can change a person's life.
"Parnassus on Wheels" is not a really outstanding book, but it is charming and sometimes very funny. Christopher Morley gives a glimpse into an earlier era, when rural areas didn't have libraries, there was no Internet to show people what was for sale, and a lot of people read nothing but the Bible.
There really isn't much of a plot, since most of it consists of Roger and Helen puttering around the countryside in the Parnassus. If there is a plot at all, it's the sort-of-romance between the two of them. It's cute and slightly sentimental, but peppered with humor such as Andrew and Roger getting into a very undignified fistfight in the road.
Helen starts out as a rather annoying character -- she's prejudiced against people who read, and seems to think that people should simply stay on the farm. That makes it all the more enjoyable when she starts appreciating the written word, and decides that she's not going to be an unappreciated bread-making automaton anymore. Roger Mifflin is actually not as odd as he seems to Helen's eyes, although he does have some charming quirks.
"Parnassus on Wheels" isn't deep or detailed enough to really be a classic, but it is a charming little early-1900s novel. Not to mention a must-read for bibliophiles.

Book Description
Morley's "Duet" follows one Roger Mifflin, an itinerant, literate pixie on his mission to bring books to the ordinary and elite alike in his bookstore-on-wheels. But love of books soon turns deeper as he encounters and eventually marries Helen, and fulfills his dream of opening a real bookshop (albeit "haunted") in Brooklyn. Wherein the booksellers become embroiled in a plot to assassinate the President of the United States. A must read for book lovers.

A bit dated, but a must read for any booklover.......2007-08-07
1 - Parnassus on Wheels
A wonderful, short, simple tale. A good read for any booklover. You'll find yourself daydreaming of a time when you could have followed the Professor's lead and hit the road with a wagonload of books.
The book is set on the rural coastal area around NYC around the turn of the century, when books were still hard to come by away from the cities.
I highly recommend an edition with illustrations by Douglas Gorsline.
2 - The Haunted Bookshop
Interesting for any book (or bookshop) lover. A fun read, but a mediocre mystery. Loaded with stereotypes, but forgivable for the time period.
The story of a used bookshop in Brooklyn at the very end of WWI, and strange incidents that befall a young ad salesman who befriends the shop owners.
Good book, shoddy publication quality.......2001-12-07
These two classics are a wonderful read, but not in this edition. Never have I seen so many typos and misprints. It's like reading uncorrected page proofs. For a (price) paperback, the book should have been proofed! I ordered multiple copies as gifts but returned them because I'd be ashamed to give them to friends. I strongly recommend readers track down an older edition from a different publisher!
Two charming books for book lovers........2001-08-09
"Parnassus on Wheels," originally published in 1917, charmed me when I read it (in the 1950s), and is probably "the reason" why I became a librarian, and now a book supplier. (I'm not sure having a horse-drawn wagon and selling books that way, would be fun today, but it's still a charming book.)
THE book for bibliophiles.......2001-07-16
This is the first time I've seen both "Parnassis on Wheels" and its sequel, "The Haunted Bookshop", together in one volume. These are hard books to peg into a certain category - they are mainly conversation-driven, as opposed to being action-driven, but there *is* some adventure. I hate to say any more about them because I hate giving away storylines. I would not recommend this book to die-hard "action" or "romance" readers, though there is a little of both in these books... Bibliophiles would definitely enjoy these books. For example, if you liked "Bachelor Brothers' Bed and Breakfast" by Bill Richardson, you will like this book. Both are funny, charming, and light-hearted, and talk about (my favorite subject) books. If you love books, I think these two (Parnassis and Bookshop) will give you a delightful read.
