Good for the long-term tourist.......2000-08-14

I have found that Culture Shock: Mauritius is a great resource for those visitors to Mauritius who are actually living in the country, rather than just visiting the touristy sites. There are very important local customs and traditions to be aware of that are discussed in detail in this book that are only skimmed over in the common tourist guides. While the other guidebooks help you find your way to the beach and which hotels to stay in, Culture Shock goes a great deal further in dealing with people. Mauritians have a great deal to offer in their multiculturalism, but without a book like Culture Shock, it may be difficult to understand how the cultures come together. The book gives advice for numerous social and business situations, as well as advice for living and getting around the country. In general the book has been fairly easy to read -- enjoyable and interesting before arriving to Mauritius, and helpful as a reference and to re-read after settling on the island.

I have felt that there are a few things the book is a bit in lacking -- it could include a bit more of the touristy options and in some parts seems a few years outdated, but in general the advice has proved very helpful, in very different situations. Roselin Lum has done a good job of balancing the different ethnic groups, and explaining their places within the country. Her book, though best for people who plan to stay significant time periods in Mauritius, would also be extremely useful for a short-term visitor who wants to understand more about the people they will meet. For a country known for its beaches, Mauritius has a lot to offer due to its multicultural composition. Lum's book lays a significant groundwork for making lasting contacts while in Mauritius.

Sixteen-year-old Ann Burden has been living on her own for a year, since the nuclear bombs turned everything surrounding her little valley into a wasteland, and her parents drove out to find other survivors... and never came back. Knowing she may be the only person left, Ann struggles with her loneliness and tends to the farm as best she can. But then a man comes over the hills in a protective suit and arrives in the valley. At first he provides Ann with welcome companionship, but as he recovers from a bout of radiation sickness, his actions become more sinister.

Z FOR ZACHARIAH is an intense, heart-pounding read. From the moment Ann first sees smoke rising from beyond the valley, each development wrenches her further and further from the life she's adjusted to--seemingly for good, and then with terrible consequences. The pacing is perfect, and with the story being told through Ann's journal entries, every event feels immediate. The personal details and unflinching descriptions of life after a nuclear war make the story even more gripping. As the tension escalates, readers will find it incredibly hard to put the book down before they discover Ann's ultimate fate. While the story leaves this somewhat open-ended, Ann's ultimate victory will make them cheer.

Ann is a likable narrator, with a natural voice and a well-developed personality. It's easy to sympathize with her based on her situation alone, but she is all the more admirable for refusing to give up even in the most desperate circumstances. She deals with her problems with intelligence and courage, but still has those moments of carelessness and fear that make her human. Readers will be on her side from the beginning, even as they struggle to imagine how they would feel in her place. Though her final triumph involves some loss, it's clear Ann will persevere and find a way to survive and be happy, which makes the ending satisfying.

Z FOR ZACHARIAH is a story that will haunt readers long after they've put down the book. It shows both the good and the bad that can emerge from human nature in the face of catastrophe, and gives hope that even in the worst situations, there are those who will remain strong.

Great book, I remember it after 20 years!.......2007-07-20

I don't remember if I was made to read this book. As a child and now I've always been an avid reader, sometimes reading as many as 2 to 3 books a day. I do remember this book. Even now, 20 years after reading, I think it's an excellent read for anyone of any age.
It's a very adult and modern theme, even thought the book was published 30+ years ago. I think its a good book for kids to read that's not only interesting, but something that may be plausable.

A Teenage classic.......2007-04-14

This was a text I was assigned in highschool, and absolutely loved it.

Ann is trapped in a valley that is virtually unaffected by a nuclear holocaust. A teenager, and left to fend for herself, Ann is both excited and threatened when a stranger in a holocaust suit enters the valley and begin to reside there also.

The book is written in diary form and a great read, particularly for teenage audiences.

anther mother take on the book.......2007-03-25

The 1st time I read the book was in school when I was in the 6th grade. I understand the mother post above and she has her right to feel that it is unfit reading for her child. I must say that book was springboard for talking about the right of women, the right for them to say no and model for men on what not to do. It also makes you wonder about the "what if's" of life. I personally found it well written.

Definitely NOT for kids, preteens or young teens! .......2007-03-24

My sixth grade daughters brought this book home from their school as required reading. I read it that night and was horrified. This book deals with concepts that kids just don't need to be thinking about. The adult male tries to sexually assault the 16 year old female character, then when she escapes, he hunts her and shoots her. He sneaks around and destroys her hiding place and she is hunted like an animal. The tension created by the way the adult male hunts, violently shoots, and tries to get her in order to rape her is just not acceptable for even older teens. This book makes the female minor weak, the adult male a predator and the situation very adult.

This book has too many adult concepts (attempted sexual assault on a minor, assault on a minor with the intent to maim or kill, and the sexually predatory behavior of the adult male character) that are totally inappropriate material for kids, pre-teens and even upper grades. I know it is all the rage in America these days to hurry kids to grow up by exposing them to adult concepts, but developmental and child psychologists have made it clear that doing so is NOT good for our kids. They have excellent, reputable studies that back these claims.

Please screen what your kids and teens are being made to read in school! I made the teacher substitute a more appropriate (screened by me) book for my daughters. I do NOT recommend this book for anyone younger than about 17.

Excellent!.......2001-10-28

I stumbled upon the short stories of Stevenson kind of by accident, and what a happy accident that was! I can now say that Stevenson wrote both some of my favorite novels and some of my favorite short stories. I haven't gotten around to reading all of his stories yet, but I have loved those that I have read. I can't possibly describe how much I enjoyed Markheim, which is without a doubt my favorite short story of all time. Despite my rather limited reading of Stevenson's short stories, I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

Quite a reading experience!.......1999-07-13

There is nothing so exciting as a Stevenson novel--Kidnapped, Master of Ballantrae, Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde--who can forget them once you've read them? These short stories have the same ability draw you in. The reading is effortless, and Stevenson's backgrounds don't labor with a conscious attempt at reality. They exist for the story and are as true as need be, and not more. From the South Sea to a Medieval City, the variety is pleasing and keeps you reading. Some of the best stories are "The Bottle Imp" (I doubt if a better twist on King Midas has ever been written), "Sire De Maltroit's Door" (A surprisingly good romance than manages, somehow, to skip all the usual elements) and "The Suicide Club" (not half as grim as it sounds, and showing RLS's ability to penetrate human thought).

These stories are highly recommended and aren't something to be read when you are all out of the "good" standard Stevenson--they stand as some of his best works and should be read just for the pure fun of it.
