Book Description
The new edition of this widely respected text provides comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of the effects of biological -physical interactions in the oceans from the microscopic to the global scale. Dynamics of Marine Ecosystems considers the influence of physical forcing on biological processes in a wide range of marine habitats including coastal estuaries, shelf-break fronts, major ocean gyres, coral reefs, coastal upwelling areas, and the equatorial upwelling system. The third edition of Dynamics of Marine Ecosystems fully considers recent significant developments in this rapidly advancing field. Of particular note is new research suggesting that long-term variability in the global atmospheric circulation affects the circulation of ocean basins, which in turn brings about major changes in fish stocks. This discovery opens up the exciting possibility of being able to predict major changes in global fish stocks.Written in an accessible, lucid style, Dynamics of Marine Ecosystems is essential reading for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students studying marine ecology and biological oceanography.

Very good book!.......2006-08-28
This books deals shows some features in oceanic dynamics and ecology in different scales, from millimetres to thousand of kilometres. Maybe not the easiest reading book, because is deep and sound, but it's essential for oceanographers and marine biologists and ecologists, researchers and graduate students.
Mann & Lazier review.......2006-07-03
I am a graduate student in oceanography, and I have extensively used Dynamics of Marine Ecosystems by Mann and Lazier to study for exams. Mann & Lazier take the time to explain the concepts of physical oceanography in simple terms and are careful to relate all of the physical processes to biological systems. There is, of course, some math, but advanced calculus is not required. The authors are from Nova Scotia, and my only criticism is that they mostly cite examples from the North Atlantic and neglect other oceans. I have used two companion books with this volume: Introduction to Physical Oceanography by John Knauss, which is more physics and less biology, and Biological Oceanography by Charles Miller, which is more biology and less physics.
"BELOW SURFACE CHANGES!".......2006-02-10
Are you studying and working in the area of marine ecology and biological oceanography? If you are, this book is for you! Authors K. H. Mann and J. R. N. Lazier, have written an outstanding 3rd edition of a book about the ecology of open-ocean communities.
Mann and Lazier, begin with an overview of marine ecology and how it has come of age. Then, they explore the intimate relationships between the small-scale processes in sea water and the lives of plants and animals. The authors continue by discussing the physical processes that affect the vertical distributions of light, heat, and nutrients, so as to better understand the dynamics of phytoplankton production. In addition, they also discuss the vertical structure in coastal waters--freshwater run-off and tidal mixing. The authors also examine the special places where wind-induced upwelling is the dominant mechanism for bringing new nutrients to the surface. Then, the authors investigate the distinctive physical and biological properties found in each type of coastal waters fronts. Next, they explore some of the interesting consequences of tidally induced water movement. Then, the authors begin to consider the ocean basins in their entirety. Next, they review some of the most exciting developments of the decade (1995-2005). The authors continue by describing the mechanism of global warming and the present-day global carbon cycle. Finally, the authors discuss questions for the future.
This excellent book also includes discussions of the physical-biological interactions and how they provide plausible mechanisms by which the atmospheric changes might be linked to the food webs and the fish-stock changes. Furthermore, the book has clearly met a need and found a very receptive audience, in the authors' review of the developments in marine ecology, as an integrated physical, chemical, and biological discipline.

Book Description
No one ever paid attention to the faces of missing children on milk cartons. But as Janie Johnson glanced at the face of the little girl who had been taken twelve years ago, she recognized that little girl--it was herself.
The mystery of the kidnapping is unraveled, but the nightmare is not over. The Spring family wants justice, but who is to blame? It's difficult to figure out what's best for everyone.
Janie Johnson or Janie Spring? There's enough love for everyone, but how can the two separate families live happily ever after?
Customer Reviews:
A Great Book!.......2007-03-07
Before you read What Ever Happened to Janie, I suggest that you read the Face on the Milk Carton first. Because every thing that happened in the Face on the Milk Carton continues in What Ever Happened to Janie.
Following the events in the Face on the Milk Carton, Janie is forced to live with a family she didn't know or love in New Jersey and she can't have any contact with her other family or friends for three months.
I personally love real life stories and that is why I enjoyed this book so much because it held my interest and it had many twists.
Even though I enjoyed this book I found the first one to be more existing and interesting.
How I felt about "Whatever Happened to Janie".......2006-12-19
Have you ever seen the pictures of the children on the milk cartons and thought glad that has not happened to me? What if you saw your own picture? Would you believe that it was true? These are just a few of the difficult questions that Janie was faced with. Now Janie is trying to figure out who is lying, the milk carton or her "parents".
Thankfully to relieve her mind somewhat Revee is there to help. Revee is the boy next door, literally. Janie is head over heels for Revee her long time friend neighbor. Revee is very understanding but also is older and wanting to do more than just talk. Revee is taking Janie's feelings into consideration, for now.
I really enjoyed the book and thought that it was well written. What I mean by this is that it gave you the right clues at the right times but never gave too much away at the wrong times. Along with this, I found it to be suspenseful because of the odd placed clues. I thought that the book had a great tragedy line that gave it a very good base. I whinded off the base well in specific details. The book definitely had a good ending. It really laves you hanging wanting to read the sequels
I can not personally relate to Janie. Although, I have been in situations where I am very confused and I am thankful for whatever shoulder I have to lean on until I am balanced on my own feet. I also worry a bunch. Thankfully my worries are not as extreme as Janie's. Now the questions that Janie is crossing are becoming much more complex and unfortunately so are the answers.
whatever happened to janie?.......2006-10-28
Whatever Happended to Janie is a great book. One day at lunch Janie took a drink of milk and saw her face on the milk carton which caused her to have all these visions, about her past. When she had to go and live with her birth family she couldnt ajust becuase the family that raised her was amazing and she missed them very much. How will she live with these strangers who want to be a "whole" family again? Readers will love Janie and feel her pain.

Whatever Happened to Janie?
By: C. Copeland
This book is about a girl named Janie who was kidnapped from her parents when she was three. Janie was forced to go back to her real parents. How will she react? She did not work well with her birth parents, the Springs. The main reason was that she was an only child at her old "home", but here she had four brothers and sisters. They were: Stephen(17 years old), Jodie(16 years old), and Brendan and Brian(11 years old). The Springs thought that Janie would come back easily, but she missed her old life. The Springs finally let her go back to her old home because they loved her. I loved this book because it was so real, there was a very interesting blend of characters, and it leaves you on the edge of your seat.
This book is so real because it overwhelms the reader with detail. For example, at the beginning of the book, when it described the characters, I could picture them perfectly in my mind. The emotion of this book is also incredible. This is one of my favorite books because of this.
I think this book has a very interesting blend of characters because everything was different. For example, Stephen dislikes Janie and Jodie just wants to be friends with her, but Janie won't give her a chance. The twins are more background with mixed feelings.
This book leave you on the edge of your seat by leaving mysteries so you will be led into the next book. For example, it leaves the mystery of were and what her kidnapper is doing.
I loved this book because it had a very interesting blend of characters, it was very real, and the book leaves you on the edge of your seat. If you have read The Face on the Milk Carton, I would highly recommend this book.
A complicated journey.......2006-05-24
Although written for adolescents, this is a worthwhile read for adults. The story of Janie/Jennie and those who love her clearly describes the ambivalence, confusion and challenges of honoring and integrating the feelings and needs of two different but good families. From a professional's perspective, I itched to have a solid therapist intervene and help everyone involved work through this lengthy process that can be almost impossible to negotiate independently. Along with "A Face on the Milk Carton" this book would provide great classroom and dinner table conversation on a multitude of real issues that we all face today.
Product Description
When Janie first realized she was the missing child on the milk carton, her whole world fell apart. At first, she wondered if the parents she loved so much had actually kidnapped her, but it turns out that they were only trying to protect her. Now that the mystery of Janie's kidnapping has been unravelled, she is caught on the horns of a huge dilemma. Since the age of three, she has been calling the Johnsons Mommy and Daddy. Suddenly, at the age of 15, she is expected to start her life all over again with a house full of noisy siblings and two strangers who are her biological parents. Will things ever be normal again? Young adult listeners may see something of themselves in the teen-aged Janie, whose anger, stubbornness, and rebellion are natural in her situation. Narrator Alyssa Bresnahan skillfully conveys the powerful emotions and the realistic decisions that this award-winning author so deftly tackles. Unabridged on 4 cassettes.

Book Description
This book provides the means of mastering the use of reactions in a range of solvents (aqueous, non-aqueous, molecular organic and inorganic, ionized molten salts). It indicates how to optimize these processes and continues by discussing the possibilities of large scale exploitation of these techniques (up to industrial processes), notably in the field of extractive metallurgy. In addition, detailed characteristics of electrochemical phenomena are presented.
Customer Reviews:
A reader.......2007-04-04
This book is an analytical treatment of the subject, that enables the reader to design successfully chemical methods (such as separations) and predict the required conditions for such methods. Part 1 describes the ways of obtaining selective effects through the use of competing reactions in aqueous media. Part 2 investigates how modifications of chemical reactivity of solutes are produced by using nonaqueous solvents. Particular consideration is given to ionized molten salts and molecular organic and inorganic solvents. This is a broad ranging study of the field. It demonstrates the theory and methodology behind practical problems in solution chemistry and enables the reader to solve them effectively, taking into account the chemistry of the system. The work is elucidated by numerous examples provided in context plus nearly 200 problems at the end of the book.
Book Description
This book fills a critical gap in biomedical data analysis in making the connection between signal processing and physiological modeling. Based on the premise that the use of signal processing techniques is predicated on explicit or implicit models, this book provides a foundation in systems analysis and signal processing techniques for physiological data. The book comprises two main parts: namely, signal processing techniques for linear systems, and physiological modeling.
Beginning with a broad introduction to signals and systems, the book proceeds to contemporary techniques in digital signal processing. While maintaining continuity of mathematical concepts, the emphasis is on practical implementation and applications. The signal processing topics covered include Fourier transform, the wavelet transform, and optimal filtering techniques. The book presumes only knowledge of college mathematics and is suitable for a beginner in the subject; however, a student with a previous course in analog and digital signal processing will find that only a third of the book contains a bare treatment of classical signal processing. The extensive use of diagrams illustrates the graphical nature of modern signal processing, and provides easy descriptions of practical techniques and their shortcomings.
Each chapter has a number of illustrative examples and exercises. The accompanying software provides exercises in convolution, sampling, Fourier analysis and wavelet decomposition that illustrate the use of these techniques as well as their shortcomings.
The latter part of the book discusses techniques of physiological modeling, contrasting biophysical models with black-box models, and experimental procedures used in such modeling. Model-based data analysis including noise reduction and feature extraction in physiology are discussed in detail. Several numerical simulation exercises are also outlined for the student.
Book Description
A literary portrait of immigrant America including contributions from celebrated authors, young writers, and undocumented workers.
This outstanding collection captures the diverse voices of the new literature of American immigration. Bringing together beautiful writing from celebrated authors such as Sandra Cisneros, Jamaica Kincaid, Maxine Hong Kingston, and Chang-Rae Lee, Crossing into America fills the literary void in public discussion about immigration.
Since the immigration reforms of 1965 removed many of the racial barriers in American immigration laws, a new wave of immigrants has visibly transformed a society that has long prided itself on being a nation of immigrants. Crossing into America includes stories and memoirs of writers born in Mexico, Kashmir, the Philippines, South Africa, and Romania, as well as poignant reflections on the immigrant experience by the children of immigrants. This book follows these newest arrivalsfrom their home countries through their engagement with Americaand also includes an accessible history of immigration policy, cartoons, and newspaper stories, and a section of conversations with activists, journalists, and scholars working in the front lines of our immigration battles.
Contributors include: Teresa Acosta, Agha Shahid Ali , Julia Alvarez, Tara Bahrampour, Frank Chin, Sandra Cisneros, Andrei Codrescu, Martín Espada, Jessica Hagedorn, Jamaica Kincaid, Maxine Hong Kingston, Chang-Rae Lee, Li-Young Lee, Frank McCourt, Richard Rodriguez.
