    Book Description

In this important new work, Howard T. Odum, widely acknowledged as the father of systems ecology, lucidly explains his concept of emergy, a measure of real wealth that provides a rational, science-based method of evaluating commodities, services, and environmental goods. Using specific real-world examples, Dr. Odum clearly demonstrates the revolutionary role of emergy in environmental management and policy making.

Environmental Accounting: Emergy and Environmental Decision Making offers environmental professionals—policymakers, managers, ecologists, planners, developers, and activists—a systematic approach to environmental and economic valuation that will eliminate much of the rancor and adversarial decision making that often plagues environmental issues. Specifically, this book:

Environmental Accounting: Emergy and Environmental Decision Making will help environmental decision makers and the society they serve maximize economic vitality with less trial and error, innovate with fewer failures, and adapt to change more rapidly. It provides the tools they need to arrive at the best policies in resource management, economics, and the environment.

Balancing the economy and the environment— from the father of systems ecology

Increasing economic dependence on diminishing natural resources has sparked a highly charged debate over the use and fate of the world environment. Environmental Accounting: Emergy and Environmental Decision Making presents a unique method of environmental management based on maximizing real wealth, the whole economy, and the public benefit.

Renowned ecologist Howard T. Odum introduces the concept of emergy to provide a rational alternative to the tug-of-war over the world's most vital assets. Emergy measures the energy put into making a product and is the cornerstone of Odum's revolutionary text. This timely and important book offers key insights into:

Environmental Accounting: Emergy and Environmental Decision Making will help economists, ecologists, policymakers, and planners make more responsible, informed decisions to sustain economic and environmental development.

      Description:
In a recent paper, ''A combined tool for environmental scientists and decision makers: ternary diagrams and emergy accounting.'' [Giannetti BF, Barrella FA, Almeida CMVB. A combined tool for environmental scientists and decision makers: ternary diagrams and emergy accounting. J Clean Prod, in press] Ternary diagrams were proposed as a graphical tool to assist emergy analysis. The graphical representation of the emergy accounting data makes it possible to compare processes and systems with and without ecosystem services, to evaluate improvements and to follow the system performance over time. The graphic tool is versatile and adaptable to represent products, processes, systems, countries, and different periods of time. The use and the versatility of ternary diagrams for assisting in performing emergy analyses are illustrated by means of five examples taken from the literature, which are presented and discussed. It is shown that emergetic ternary diagram's properties assist the assessment of the system efficiency, its dependence upon renewable and non-renewable inputs and the environmental support for dilution and abatement of process emissions. With the aid of ternary diagrams, details such as the interaction between systems and between systems and the environment are recognized and evaluated. Such a tool for graphical analysis allows a transparent presentation of the results and can serve as an interface between emergy scientists and decision makers, provided the meaning of each line in the diagram is carefully explained and understood.

In any time, Alexandra David-Neel would have been considered an extraordinary woman, but in the Victorian era, she was truly exceptional. Born in 1868, David-Neel eschewed the dances, dinners, and formal marriages common to women of her era and social standing in order to indulge her fierce independence and insatiable intellectual curiosity. Her interest in comparative religions dated back to early childhood; even as a student in a Catholic convent school, she kept statues of both Christ and the Buddha in her room. She made her first trip to Asia in 1891, then supported herself as a light-opera singer and journalist before marrying a seemingly conventional man, Philip Neel. Fortunately for both Alexandra David-Neel and for posterity, Philip was less stodgy than his position as a well-off engineer might imply; though he did not accompany her, he supported his wife's explorations and even acted as her literary agent when she began to write about the places she visited. Alexandra and Philip remained the closest of friends until his death in 1941.

David-Neel spent years traveling in India and China, but perhaps her most daring adventure was the trip to Tibet's forbidden city of Lhasa. She was 55 years old at the time, fluent in Tibetan and well versed in both Sanskrit and Buddhism. Disguised as a man, she spent four treacherous months on the road before finally becoming the first European woman ever to enter Lhasa. My Journey to Lhasa is David-Neel's own account of her astounding journey, one fraught with hardship and danger. It is both a chronicle of a bygone time and a testimonial to a remarkable human.

        Book Description

An exemplary travelogue of danger and achievement by the Frenchwoman Madame Alexandra David–Neel of her 1923 expedition to Tibet, the fifth in her series of Asian travels, and her personal recounting of her journey to Lhasa, Tibet's forbidden city.

In order to penetrate Tibet and reach Lhasa, she used her fluency of Tibetan dialects and culture, disguised herself as a beggar with yak hair extensions and inked skin and tackled some of the roughest terrain and climate in the World. With the help of her young companion, Yongden, she willingly suffered the primitive travel conditions, frequent outbreaks of disease, the ever–present danger of border control and the military to reach her goal.

The determination and sheer physical fortitude it took for this woman, delicately reared in Paris and Brussels, is inspiration for men and women alike.

David–Neel is famous for being the first Western woman to have been received by any Dalai Lama and as a passionate scholar and explorer of Asia, hers is one of the most remarkable of all travellersߴales.

5 out of 5 stars A history of Tibet that no longer exists, we all owe David-Neel a debt.......2007-07-16

Personally, I love this book and have read it more than three times. If, for no other reason, you have an interest in Tibet prior to the Chinese invasion in 1950, this book leaves for posterity a Tibet that no longer exists. The border is gone from modern maps, but even a Westerners' interpretation of their daily lives, is treasure to us all of what once was, a free and spiritually ruled Tibet.

The Chinese have a built a "Disneyland" at the foot of Potalla Palace. I need to remember it before the modern attempt at Chinesification of Tibet.

5 out of 5 stars The Pilgrim was a Lady.......2006-08-11

In 1923 at the age of 55, Alexandra David-Neel put on the robes of a Buddhist monk and walked across Tibet for four months on a pilgrimmage to the holy city of Lhasa. No European woman had ever entered the holy city before, and the road promised many dangers, from wild animals to blizzards to bandits. Her descriptions bear witness to a spunky evolved soul whose scholarly knowledge of Buddhism served her well in her adopted role as an itinerant monk. Her writing is elegant, punctuated by an unselfconscious humor and relentless perspicacity. Truly an adventure trek of many wonders.

5 out of 5 stars An unusual journey to say the least.......2004-01-26

When I was reading the reviews of this book, I was struck by the one of the reviews. It was very negative, and the reviewer missed the beauty of this book entirely. I was glad that I had already read it. I read the reviews because I was curious to see if others had enjoyed the book as much as I did. I was buying it again as a present for a friend. The author was a very unusual person, and this book is very much worth the read. She wrote about customs and values honestly as she saw them. She was not a dispassionate viewer, but I also felt that she was not judgemental or superior. When customs of two peoples are as different as some of Tibet and France are, they will shock a person and that person will remark. However, I felt that she loved and respected the people she wrote about, and she did a remarkable job in recounting what she saw. She gave her readers the pleasure of a most unusual journey with her and her young companion through a country that was worth writing about.

        1 out of 5 stars Massively Overrated.......2003-12-24

I did not see what the big deal was, and would not recommend it. Her language and the way she treated people is offensive, Eurocentric, condescending and narrow-minded -- typical of many travel books of this period. For those trying to learn about Tibet, there is not enough here to satisfy. This is your classic I-am-to-be-admired-because-I-left-the-comforts-of-civilization-applaud-me themed books. She is not a traveller but a trophy collector.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Effort.......2001-03-10

This is a book which I think of often. Ms. David-Neel had or should I say has quite a strong spirit. I would recommend all of her books to anyone interested in spiritual growth, women's triumphs or walking accross high Himalayan passes in the dead of winter with the Lama Yongden. I cross high Rocky Mountain passes regularly, but always in the comfort of an 18-wheeler.

1927. Madame David-Neel's travels in remote parts of Asia, including her fifth expedition, a journey to Tibet, of which she gives a short account in the present book, were undertaken as the result of certain peculiar circumstances. The idea of visiting Lhasa became implanted in her mind. Before the frontier post to which she had been escorted, she took an oath that in spite of all obstacles, she would reach Lhasa and show what the will of a woman could achieve.

5 out of 5 stars Zoey Dean's best work yet!.......2007-07-28

Zoey Dean is at it again in her novel Tall Cool One as the fourth book in the A- List series. In this book, Anna goes on vacation to Las Casitas in Mexico to check out a resort that her father might buy. Back home Poppy, Sam's stepmother is getting ready for her baby, and her best friend Dee, becomes best friends with Poppy, agrivating Sam, so Sam goes to Las Casitas. There the two girls each meet a guy, but one day after drinking a very powerful drink, mescal, the girls get drunk and lost on the beach. Then a thunderstorm comes and the girls take shelter in an abandoned mansion, where they are awaken the the Mexican police getting ready to kill them, until Jackon Sharpe comes to save the day. In the end the girls get home and Anna is upset because her dad didn't come to look for her. In my opinion this was my favorite book in the series so far. Zoey Dean really keeps her readers interested with this book, and I would definitely recommend this book and the rest of the series to teen readers.

                    4 out of 5 stars A-List 4: Tall Cool One.......2006-07-07

This book was very interesting, but not the best. First, I thought that Danny and Anna were gonna get together but he's in the beginning, and then he just disappears. Where did he go? I was also confused because this used to be kinda like a teenage soap opera and now this book was... a mystery in mexico. Different, but I should give Zoey Dean some credit for not writing the same old thing every book. But it was a great read, even though it was kinda different. The series is still awesome, and I still read the next book. So all is well, I'll just say it wasn't as great as the others.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, No Ben!.......2006-06-28

I was so happy! Finally obnixous Ben was gone! I loved when Sam and Anna got lost in the desert and found that house, but i also reallly wanted to know whos house it was. I loved how it wasn't all set in Beverly Hills and i loved all the descripiton. My favorite charcter was Lloyd because he was so werid. That drink that Sam and Anna drank that made them high is kind of like potscheen. ( Though i sure have never tried it.) I loved this book and you will too!

Sam & Anna travels in a jet back home and just when Sam thinks she will never see Eduado again, he shows up and suprises her. It really is a "happily ever after" ending. I really can't wait until I read the 5th book, The A-List series are making me want to go farther than I expected. I think this is a excellent & determined book for everyone to read!

Analytic and innovative, yet fairly easy to read, book on the place-dependent interactions of cell surfaces with other cell surfaces that regulate the processes of embryological development in metazoans (ie, animals).

Edelman's Topobiology provides an excellent introduction to the field of molecular embryology. In the book you will be introduced to CAMs (cell adhesion molecules), SAMs (substrate adhesion molecules), and CJMs (cell junction molecules) that are produced and used by the body to keep itself organized and literally stuck together as it develops and grows. The processes of development and growth are extremely complex, and involve interactions among many different entities in the body. As the header suggests, this book is not an easy read; it presents abstract concepts, and the author uses extremely complex sentence constructions to tell his story. This is not a book for the faint of heart, it is written with the professional biologist in mind.

                              Book Description

Asserting that there are many more organic codes in nature than just the genetic code, Marcello Barbieri states that the existence of these codes and their corresponding organic memories can be used to explain the key steps in the evolutionary history of life. With major events corresponding to the appearance of new codes, the organic codes and their corresponding organic memories can also shed new light on the problems of epigenesis and how embryos generate their own complexity.

                              Download Description

The genetic code appeared on Earth with the first cells. The codes of cultural evolution arrived almost four billion years later. These are the only codes that are recognized by modern biology. In this book, however, Marcello Barbieri explains that there are many more organic codes in nature, and their appearance not only took place throughout the history of life but marked the major steps of that history. A code establishes a correspondence between two independent 'worlds', and the codemaker is a third party between those 'worlds'. Therefore the cell can be thought of as a trinity of genotype, phenotype and ribotype. The ancestral ribotypes were the agents which gave rise to the first cells. The book goes on to explain how organic codes and organic memories can be used to shed new light on the problems encountered in cell signalling, epigenesis, embryonic development, and the evolution of language.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshingly new view of the genetic codes.......2005-01-31

Nowadays everyone has heard of the genetic code (in the singular). There is a certain amount of confusion in many people's minds, encouraged by the journalistic use of the phrase "genetic code" to mean what a biologist would call the genome, i.e. the complete DNA sequence for an individual. Nonetheless, there are plenty of good sources, ranging from the highly technical to the popular, to clarify the matter for those who want to be set straight.

Marcello Barbieri is talking about something different, that is not only little known to the general public, but is also far less well known among biologists than it deserves to be. For him "codes" is plural, and he means more than just the familiar set of rules that say, for example, that when the triplet AAA occurs in an appropriate context in the DNA of a cell the aminoacid lysine needs to occur in the sequence of the corresponding protein. For Barbieri this is just one of numerous organic codes. Some of the others are also "genetic", in the sense that they involve reading more from DNA sequences than just aminoacid sequences, but others are not, as they involve information coded into structures such as sugars and histones that are not nucleic acids.

All this should have considerable interest for the biologist even if we just stop there, but Barbieri goes on to build a theory of evolutionary complexity on the existence of multiple codes. Each time a new code appears during evolution it allows a large jump in the complexity of the organisms that possess it, but it does not replace earlier codes, which continue to be used, and it does not cause the simpler organisms to disappear. Thus modern organisms constitute a sort of pyramid in which the simplest organisms, the bacteria, use the ordinary genetic code and nothing else. The simplest eukaryotes add to the complexity by using splicing codes as well -- still in the genetic material, but now allowing fragments to be combined in different ways, and thus interpreted in different ways. The most recent of his codes to appear in evolution is language, which distinguishes our own species from all the others.

                              2 out of 5 stars A typical anti-Darwinism pseudoscience book.......2005-01-24

The book contains 280 pages of text, 25 pages of refenreces, 7 pages of INDEX, and many figures and cartoon to explain the concept of author's hypothesis. Barbieri was a development biologist at MRC in Cambridge, NIH, and Max Planck.

This is a typical anti-Darwinism semi-pseudoscience book. I picked up the book because the book cover had a Chomsky's accolade. It's not as obvious and outrageous as Intelligent Desing-sort of book, but the author cites his own book to explain his main points. Many biological facts in the book are real and correct, but there is no scientific logical structure to support the author's "semantic" theory. I was struck by the fact that this book was published from Cambridge University Press.

1 out of 5 stars A wrong path to explaining biology.......2003-12-06

This book has a germ of an idea, but overall the author's exposition is confused and unconvincing. The big idea is that life is a set of organic codes and that codes imply meaning, hence the "semantics" in the title. Barbieri attemps to show that codes are necessary mappings between domains that e.g. allow information stored in the genome to be translated into the organism through development. A key point is that the genome contains insufficient information to fully describe the organism. From this, the author posits codes for other processes, e.g. exon splicing and signal transduction, although he offers no evidence and just suggests biologists haven't looked for them. He also tries to use his ideas to "explain" evolution, especially the Cambrium explosion of phyla.

I found his ideas unconvincing. His ideas rest on his model of how complexity needs to be generated, based on algorithms to reconstruct CAT scan images. He uses a new term "convergent increase in complexity" to mean "reconstructing a structure from incomplete information", which is based on these CAT scan image algorithms. However, a wealth of literature on cellular automata (finite state machines) shows that complexity can be generated by simple rules. Furthermore, repeatable, complex structures can be observed by these processes. If one needs convincing about this, just look at the biomorph images in Dawkins' "The Blind Watchmaker" for taste of how simple rules can create complex, "body plans". L-systems are another example.
But despite his claims, Barbieri does not really offer falsifiable hypotheses and for this reason alone, it is difficult to understand how anyone can build on this work as a model of biology.

Rather than thinking of codes as means to map information spaces, other workers have followed more fruitful approaches, e.g. how codes are used in information theory as a model to understand the biology. What is apparent from computational science, e.g. Holland's work on tagging systems, and wet biology, is that life needs to have systems that co-ordinate. Co-ordination becomes increasingly difficult as organisms increase in complexity and size. Biology seems to indicate that many approaches to communication used in industry have their surrogates in living systems.

Barbieri comes over as a little petulant that his ideas have not be taken up by biologists. A quick search on the web showed that only people involved in a "discipline" called biosemiotics had looked at his work, and these texts reinforced the sense that incomprehensibity was used to mask lack of content. I hope I have given some reasons why this might be so.

In conclusion, although I found this book in a biology section, it might have been better placed with the humanities.

                                  Book Description

This book develops the potential theory starting from a sub-Markovian resolvent of kernels on a measurable space, covering the context offered by a right process with general state space. It turns out that the main results from the classical cases (e.g., on locally compact spaces, with Green functions) have meaningful extensions to this setting. The study of the strongly supermedian functions and specific methods like the Revuz correspondence, for the largest class of measures, and the weak duality between two sub-Markovian resolvents of kernels are presented for the first time in a complete form. It is shown that the quasi-regular semi-Dirichlet forms fit in the weak duality hypothesis. Further results are related to the subordination operators and measure perturbations. The subject matter is supplied with a probabilistic counterpart, involving the homogeneous random measures, multiplicative, left and co-natural additive functionals. The book is almost self-contained, being accessible to graduate students.

"Whatever is felt upon the page without being specifically named there-that, one might say, is created." This famous observation appears in Willa Cather on Writing, a collection of essays and letters first published in 1949. In the course of it Cather writes, with grace and piercing clarity, about her own fiction and that of Sarah Orne Jewett, Stephen Crane, and Katherine Mansfield, among others. She concludes, "Art is a concrete and personal and rather childish thing after all-no matter what people do to graft it into science and make it sociological and psychological; it is no good at all unless it is let alone to be itself-a game of make-believe, of re-production, very exciting and delightful to people who have an ear for it or an eye for it."

WILLA CATHER ON WRITING, Critical Studies as an Art, published by the University of Nebraska Press, is a slim(20 page introduction by Stephen Tennant, 126 pages by Cather) and valuable, though selective, work. Tennant attempts, with effort, to pull the contents together by his introduction. The contents are extensive pieces Cather wrote on writers and pieces of writing familiar to readers. The attempt is forced and the contents are wedged into the title and purpose of the publishers or Tennant. The Contents: Four letters: On DEATH COMES FOR THE ARCHBISHOP, On SHADOWS ON THE ROCK, Escapism, On THE PROFESSOR'S HOUSE The Novel Demeuble Four Prefaces: THE BEST STORIES OF SARAH ORNE JEWETT Gertrude Hall's THE WAGNERIAN ROMANCES Stephen Crane's WOUNDS IN THE RAIN AND OTHER IMPRESSIONS OF WAR Defoe's THE UNFORTUNATE MISTRESS My First Novels [There Were Two] On the Art of Fiction Katherine Mansfield Light on Adobe Walls [An unpubished fragment] The pieces are critical and hold advice for would-be-writers. Selections read like pieces of conversation with Cather on aspects of writing. Given Cather's talent and output, she deserves a more thorough collection with a more accurate title.
