              4 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-03-01

This book is very exciting. If you are looking for a action packed book, this is a good book for you. There is a bombing scene in it, which is very exciting. I hope you read it!

1 out of 5 stars It was very boring.......2004-01-06

It never had a climax to it they were just always moving around to different places and no action every happend they would just here stories about the outside world from were they were living. The book just sucked and i don't think it should have made it to the publishing company.
              Thank you

              3 out of 5 stars Somehow Disappointed..........2002-08-18

Tara Hawrami is a thirteen-year-old girl living in Iraq in the 1980's. She has what we would call a normal life-living in a nice house, going shopping with her best friend, and having the mistaken feeling that nothing particularly bad is going to happen to her. But then the inevitable comes. Tara has always known that she was a Kurd, and has maybe even faintly known that Kurds are hated by the Iraqi goverment...but one day, when walking home from school, she sees a teenaged Kurdish boy die for his beliefs.

Things all happen in short order after that, and the Hawramis, who find themselves dodging the Iraqi government, find themselves living in a remote Kurdish village that is unlike anything they have ever known. The journey continues when the village becomes the target of brutal bombing raids, and it seems that the family must become refugees in order to escape danger. Experiences in two refugee camps follow, and Tara and her family wonder if their life will ever be what it was before.

As I said before, I was disappointed with this book. It seems as if the author had a very promising topic and a character that could potentially make the story seem real to readers. But something seems flawed in this book. Laird's writing style is somehow "detached" and it doesn't really feel like you are "right there" (which is how it should in a good book). In what should have been some of the most exciting parts of the book, I felt kind of bored and ready to "get on with it." Character development seems a little weak, too. We never seemed to really get to know Tara-there was too much time spent telling what she did, not enough time spent telling what she thought.

The one great thing about this book is that it lets us know about a conflict, a people, and a time in the not-so-distant past that many of us probably don't know about. I think it's good to read books like this that open our eyes to what's happening around us; it's just too bad that the quality of writing and character development in this book was far from 5-star.

              5 out of 5 stars Worth sharing.......2002-04-06

I read this book to my students in a sole-charge school when the setting was still hot in the news, back in the early 90s. The story had us all gasping with identification as these blessed children in rural New Zealand imagined a life in turmoil. We still remember the pleasant life and then the flight over the mountains in the night.
This books sits with Ann Holm's "I Am David", or Ian Seraillier's "The Silver Sword", as a novel that will help children understand the human suffering behind world politics and the nightly news. History is being made every day and World War Two is not the only history that gets a break in literature.
Our discussions, our map work, our search for photographs of the region and the culture made this a rich reading experience indeed and I whole heartedly recommend it.

I thought KISS THE DUST was a very good book. It's about a girl
named TARA and her family. One afternoon a soldier comes to their house. TARA's father was sick. The solier tells BABA the police are looking for him.SO they have to move away from their home. Most of the book is about them moving around the world and their problems.

                      Description:
In the present work the episodic appearance of Saharan dust in the Hungarian aerosol has been investigated using our 1991-2000 aerosol data obtained with proton-induced X-ray emission elemental analysis. For selecting local episodes of Saharan origin three different approximations have been applied. On the one hand, episodes have been selected in the time series of concentration ratios Ti/Ca, Si/Al, Al/Ca, Ti/Fe, Si/Fe, Ca/Fe generally accepted as regional signatures of Saharan dust. Remarkable similarity has been found between Italian and Hungarian observations of Saharan dust episodes in spring 1991. The tracing power of the regional signatures generally accepted as fingerprints of Saharan dust was found to be limited in the present region due to anthropogenic effects during transport. On the other hand, either backward air trajectories or TOMS aerosol index data from NASA satellites NIMBUS7 and EARTH PROBE have been used as additional tool for assigning local effects to Saharan sources. A nine-month overlap in the application of trajectories and TOMS maps permitted us to compare the applicability of these selection tools. During the period considered we assigned nearly 50 local episodes to Saharan sources. Data are presented for the frequency, the probable source areas and the seasonal distribution of Saharan episodes in the Hungarian atmosphere.

                            Book Description

The genealogy and function of epigenesis—the theory that organisms generate themselves under the guidance of a formative drive—provides a unique means of understanding the profound changes in philosophy, philosophy of language, and literature at the turn of the nineteenth century.

The book begins by describing how and why epigenesis came to replace the reigning model of biological origination, preformation—the theory that all organisms were preformed at the creation of the world. Contemporary with these developments, Kant used the figures of epigenesis and self-formation to illustrate his concepts of the origin of the categories, the possible success of practical reason, and the validity of aesthetic and teleological judgments. The author shows how Kant's figurative use of self-generation was turned into an indispensable determination by Fichte and his successors: philosophical knowledge can claim absolute certainty only if it can prove that it generates itself in logically accountable procedures.

This self-generating philosophy—also known as Idealism—was in turn accompanied by a revaluation of the origin of language, notably by Herder and by Humboldt, who attempted to formulate self-generation as the philosophical foundation for a future Science of Language. The book concludes by demonstrating that the biological, philosophical, and linguistic problematic of self-generation is at the heart of Goethe's novel Elective Affinities and Beaumarchais's The Marriage of Figaro.

                                  Book Description

The computational power currently available means that practitioners can find extremely accurate approximations to the solutions of more and more sophisticated mathematical models-providing they know the right analytical techniques. In relatively simple terms, this book describes a class of techniques that fulfill this need by providing closed-form solutions to many boundary value problems that arise in science and engineering. Boundary integral equation methods (BIEM's) have certain advantages over other procedures for solving such problems: BIEM's are powerful, applicable to a wide variety of situations, elegant, and ideal for numerical treatment. Certain fundamental constructs in BIEM's are also essential ingredients in boundary element methods, often used by scientists and engineers. However, BIEM's are also sometimes more difficult to use in plane cases than in their three-dimensional counterparts. Consequently, the full, detailed BIEM treatment of two-dimensional problems has been largely neglected in the literature-even when it is more than marginally different from that applied to the corresponding three-dimensional versions. This volume discusses three typical cases where such differences are clear: the Laplace equation (one unknown function), plane strain (two unknown functions), and the bending of plates with transverse shear deformation (three unknown functions). The author considers each of these with Dirichlet, Neumann, and Robin boundary conditions. He subjects each to a thorough investigation-with respect to the existence and uniqueness of regular solutions-through several BIEM's. He proposes suitable generalizations of the concept of logarithmic capacity for plane strain and bending of plates, then uses these to identify contours where non-uniqueness may occur. In the final section, the author compares and contrasts the various solution representations, links them by means of boundary operators, and evaluates them for their suitability for numeric computation.

This is an EXCELLENT collection of Jane Austen's novels. Yes, when buying it, my brother and I chuckled over the irony of "The Complete Novels... Volume I," but neither of us was silly enough to think we were immune from having to also purchase Volume II in order to have the Complete Novels. If you are looking for quality at a reasonable price, this is the collection to buy. These books are exceptionally well made, and the type and paper quality are well above average.

                                  Volume I Review:

I originally read Volume I years ago after having first seen the television and movie adaptations of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. I recently decided to re-read this volume and was even more enraptured with it than I was during the first read. The plight of the Dashwood sisters and the malleability of their step-brother by his cold wife in Sense and Sensibility is made so vivid by Jane Austen's flawless writing. What girl or woman reading Pride and Prejudice doesn't imagine she is Elizabeth Bennet, with both her beauty and intelligence, inadvertantly making Mr. Darcy fall in love with her? My heart positively ached for Fanny Price in Mansfield Park, and I wondered how she could put up with the neglect of her rich, fancy relatives and the tyranny of her Aunt Norris and maintain such a pure heart. I am awed by the timelessness and reality of these novels. In my mind, it simply does not get any better than Jane Austen.

                                  Volume II Review:

I also recently finished re-reading Volume II. Jane Austen's novels certainly do transcend time. Whenever I read them I am struck by some new truth applicable either to my life or life today in general. What was true about human nature approximately 200 years ago remains true today, which makes relating to and understanding Jane Austen so easy as well as gratifying.

Like the heroine in Emma, who hasn't known a spoiled brat whose natural vanity is the result of being blessed in everything? Emma's superior attitude is a bit galling at times, and I positively cringed at some of her blunders, but Emma has a good heart. She makes mistakes, like we all do, but eventually she begins to understand her errors through the help of her good friend Mr. Knightly. Thank goodness for friends who love us in spite of our imperfections!

In Northanger Abbey, I am tickled to death not only by Catherine's naivete but also by Jane Austen herself. The first half of this novel is filled with the most hilarious observations which seem to come directly from Austen, and the second half is filled with the overactive imagination of Catherine Morland, who has read perhaps too many novels. In this parody of Gothic fiction, Austen pokes fun at both herself and her audience. It is truly a delight.

When I first read Jane Austen in my mid-twenties, Persuasion was my favorite novel. It gave me hope. I felt so strongly for Anne Elliot, who at nineteen was convinced by her family to reject the man she loved because of his lack of rank and fortune. Seven years later, after he has acheived his fortune, she is thrown into this same man's company. She must watch, agonizingly, while he courts two other young ladies. Anne's courage and fortitude are inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars Jane Austen anti-Modern Library consipiracy??.......2005-11-10

There are two similar in tone if not identical reviews on amazon.com and amazon.ca warning people away from this edition because it's not "complete".

Clearly, they didn't read the title past "Complete Novels" to the "Volume I" part which specified pretty precisely which of the six complete novels were part of this volume.

I'm mystified. Surely anyone who's willing and eager (let alone able) to read Austen could understand it would take two volumes to publish the complete works? Come on, they average 300 pages apiece!

So I think the two correspondents are agents of Penguin or Oxford World's Classics or somebody who has an interest in turning people away from the Modern Library editions.

Oh yeah, a review: the Modern Library editions are excellent. They're complete (so you have to buy TWO books!), they're affordable, and they're durable.

1 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor - DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM BEFORE READING THIS.......2000-08-16

This review is not for the novels of Jane Austen, rather for the item offered here on amazon.com

Much to my surprise, after I ordered "The Complete Novels of Jane Austen (Modern Library Series)" ISBN 0679600264, only one book arrived. As pictured above, Vol I contains S&S, P&P, and MP.

The other three novels must be in Vol II, you surmise? Wrong! THAT IS ALL YOU GET !

Apparently, "complete" is a relative term, meaning "half of". At best, this listing shows ignorance. At worst, this listing is fraud.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Jane's prose is perfect.......1998-04-14

Jane Austen is still where she belongs, between book covers. We know the stories are good, but what isn't immediately obvious is the many recent adaptations is what an impeccable writer of English prose she is - no posturing word-dropper, no purveyer of hoary terminology, but a fine, simple, straightforward narrator.

She is brief but telling, using tilt and tone to make us smile. She doesn't bore with tedious flashbacks or podding descriptions of a new character's background. And she tells us what we wanted to know, just when we want to know it. As I am wondering what became of Mr. Bingley, he turns up; as I am trying to remember what the party is doing in Bath, it becomes clear. She's always ahead, dropping just the right number of crumbs.

Jane's world moved slowly, and reading her takes time. Her cncerns are universal - how to fill the hours of the day, the pairing of single young men and women, the effects of money, household matters. Her ethical domain is dominated by consideration - of others' feelings, needs, requirements. The occasional rebellious spirit is not admired, concepts such as fulfillment and freedom never enter her head. As for "needs" beyond basic physical ones - an idea that would have astonished her - she would have substituted "obligations."

But there is something about all this that keeps us going back, and back and back.
