      Book Description

Seton Lloyd's lively account of Turkey's early history is for the ever-increasing number of people visiting the ancient sites of this fabled land. Written by an archaeologist who has spent much of his life in the Near East, the book is not a conventional "guide" to the antiquities of Anatolia, nor is it a textbook. It is instead Lloyd's attempt to share his profound interest in an antique land, its inhabitants, and the surviving monuments that link the present to the past.
Lloyd traces the many different cultures that have been a part of Turkey from prehistoric times to the Christian era. He recounts the exploits of the Hittite kings, the confrontation of Croesus and the Persian king Cyrus, the conquests of Alexander the Great, and Mithridates' epic resistance against Rome. Archaeological landmarks discussed include the discovery of the Alaca Hüyük tombs, the attempts to establish the location of Troy, and the opening of the Tomb of Midas. Lloyd shows how each successive culture has left its mark on an astonishing variety of sites, from the shrines of Çatal Hüyük to the temples of Ephesus and the churches founded by St. Paul.

4 out of 5 stars Good source on ancient history in Asia Minor.......2007-08-12

I bought this book as background reading for an upcoming trip to Turkey. It is a comprehensive and well-written overview of ancient history, from the Hittites up through the beginnings of Christianity in what is now Turkey, with context relating to the influence of adjacent areas as needed. It puts things in context and provides maps to help locate cultures and events geographically. I would recommend it for anyone interested in the subject, or reading up for a visit.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not exhaustive.......2006-05-14

The book gives a good introduction to the history of Anatolia up to the time of the early Christian Church. It can seem at times to be a little dry or shallow in its coverage. While it is on some sense a historical account, the author is an archeologist, and the narrative heavily leans on this direction. This is not necesarily bad since I read the book as a prelude to my trip to Turkey, but one should be aware of it before buying the book. All in all, I would recommend buying it.

      5 out of 5 stars One correction.......2001-05-16

Apologies to genuine readers who think politics has no place in this column. But I could not help add a very simple fact. If only this Dutch fellow who has spent years as an archeologist visited Istanbul to find Armenian churches all over the place as the Armenian community who were left intact in Istanbul after the so-called genocide (!). Oh, if it was Asia Minor where he could not find anything left Armenian, he only needed to as far as Erzurum, Erzincan, Kars (eastern provinces of Turkey) to see mass graves of Turks still being uncovered today as the legacy of Armenian gangs.

5 out of 5 stars A Fine Study of Ancient History of Turkey.......2001-01-06

Seton Lloyd is known to American public by his commentaries on Public Television documentaries about Turkey. He is a well informed scholar, and trustworthy. Therefore I was offended by the Amsterdam, Holland reviewer who, trying to push his own political agenda, tries to kick dirt on Seton Lloyd. Seton Lloyd writes what is Turkey most famous for: its Greco-Roman, ancient Hittite, and Mesopotanian heritage. Most Americans I know want to go Turkey to see the earliest churches of Christianity, likewise many Europeans enjoy discovering their Christian-Greco-Roman heritage as well. There are a lot of Armenian relics in Turkey, a country with the history of many peoples and cultures. Visitors to those regions know where they are and they go to visit them as well.

5 out of 5 stars Going to Turkey? Read this first...........2000-12-26

This was one of our best preparations for our tour of Turkey ( cascoly.com/tours.htm) It covers an enormous period from prehistoric times to the Christian era, yet manages to set everything in perspective. Lloyd traces the exploits of the Hittite kings, the confrontation of Croesus and the Persian king Cyrus, the conquests of Alexander the Great, and Mithridates' epic resistance against Rome. Plus, it addresses the history as a traveler will see it. Archaeological landmarks discussed include the discovery of the Alaca Huyuk tombs, the attempts to establish the location of Troy, and the opening of the Tomb of Midas. Lloyd shows how each successive culture has left its mark on an astonishing variety of sites, from the shrines of Catal Huyuk to the temples of Ephesus and the churches founded by St. Paul. In our month long trip we only managed to visit about half the sites that he discusses, although we saw many of them represented in museums. But that just means we'll still be using this book on our next trip. My only wish would be that he could follow with a book covering the last 2000 years of Turkish history

      Book Description

Throughout the millennia Turkey formed the core of several Empires - Persia, Rome, Byzantium - before becoming the center of the Ottoman Empire. All these civilizations have left their marks on the landscape, architecture and art of Turkey - a place of fascinating overlapping cultures.

A Traveller's History of Turkey offers a concise and readable account of the region from Prehistory right up to the present day. It covers everything from the legendary Flood of Noah, the early civilization of Catal Huyuk seven thousand years before Christ, through the treasures of Troy, Alexander the Great, the Romans, Seljuks, Byzantines and the Golden Age of the Sultans, to the twentieth century's great changes wrought by Kemal Ataturk and the strong position Turkey now holds in the world community.

      1 out of 5 stars Another silly tourist's book.......1999-12-10

This book is just another silly tourist's book by just another ignorant tourist. Not worthy of real travelers!

Read Mary Lee Settle's "Turkish Reflections" to get a good introduction to Turkey. It is becoming a bit dated but is still much better than silly books like this.

1 out of 5 stars Sided autors can not call themselves historian!.......1999-12-05

ln the book Mr.Stoneman is claiming that Turkish army massacared 10000 kurds. And also about the greek invasion, he says turks killed and raped the greek and armenian inhabitants of izmir. The information he is providing is sided.lf we are talking about the history, the author has to have evidences and written records about the events he is reporting.lf he is just writting the stories he heard from the others it can not be accepted "true" immediately.lt seems that he did not make any research about the past at all, but he wrote the things just like he wanted. People can not change the past.Mr. Stoneman should be more responsible and correct the wrong information in his book.Or he has to rename his book:"A fictive story of turkey to the sided people who likes to believe that all turks are bad" Finally, general sound of the book is blaming turks on every issue.lt is %100 wrong that Turks did all the bad things. One should make researches and listen to both sides before coming to a conclusion.lf there is no written records, those events should not be mentioned in the serious! history books.Although he has the names of some books listed at the end of the book he is not refering to the certain pages of the books for his conclusions. All because of these the book is not professional at all.

1 out of 5 stars IT IS NOT FAIR ON BEHALF OF TURKEY!.......1999-07-29

      This book is not optimistic

2 out of 5 stars Too brief on modern Turkey.......1998-11-07

There's too much - more than 60% of the book - devoted to the pre-Ottoman period. There's too much emphasis on ancient Turkey. To understand modern Turkey, it is essential to understand the Ottoman and the Attaturk legacies. Only about 30 pages are devoted to the Attaturk and post-Attaturk period. It is just not possible to understand the role of Islam, the military, the position of women, etc., in modern Turkey, without in-depth reference to the impact of the Ottomans and Attaturk to attitudes and values in the country.

Jane Taylor’s classic guidebook to Istanbul is acknowledged as the ultimate introduction to the city. It leads travellers from the great monuments of Byzantium and early Constantinople to the mosques and palaces built for Suleyman the Magnificent and the other Sultans while providing both practical information and a rich historical context. It also covers more recent sites: ranging from the mundane (the Galatasaray fishmarket) to the magnificent pavilions and villas of late Ottoman times. In addition to Istanbul, the cities of Iznik, Bursa and Edirne are covered in extensive detail. Filled with maps, itineraries, plans and descriptions of all the sites that any visitor could hope to see, this is the only guidebook that a traveller to Istanbul will ever need.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable contribution to the Oriental discourse!.......2001-03-15

"Oriental Panorama" investigates cultural and cross-cultural phenomena as presented in Brtish travel accounts about Ottoman Turkey. Schiffer attempts to reconstruct the impact of a strange country and society on a Romantic and Victorian consciousness and equally the images which arise from such a travelling experience. He has consulted sources from the end of the 18th century onwards; the bulk stems from the first half of the 19th; altogether some 160 travel narratives have been taken into account. This is the most exhaustive anlysis of the theme I know. The method of research combines both cultural studies and literary theory. Part of the study contains descriptions of external phenomena, hardships on the road and on sea, dangers to health and lives, through cholera, plague and bandits, the attitudes and measures of Ottoman authorities faced with foreign visitors, descriptions, moreover, of routes, of natural and architectural beauties and classical ruins, of every day life in the cities and in the country, of ethnic diversity and Oriental sameness, of Muslim devotion and hospitality. Another part attempts to describe the mental state of British travellers when faced with less tangible cultural phenomena such as the genius of the place, the aesthetic character of the capital, the strength and influence of Islamic institutions, the moral character of Turks and other ethnic groups in the dominions of the sultan, the elusive but fascinating topics of sultans and harems, of Oriental women, their freedom, their erotic allure, their moral nature when compared to their British sisters. I find Schiffer's work a valuable contribution to the Oriental discourse.

                    Book Description

he uptown girls are headed downtown as Serena and Jenny take on their new fabulous roles as rock-star model girlfriends of New York's hottest band, The Raves. Meanwhile, Dan is too busy drowning his sorrows in empty bottles to notice a mysterious French beauty who has a penchant for dirty, Jim Morrison-wannabe lead singers. Blair takes residence at the Plaza to think about her future. Will she become a gun-toting international spy or Manhattan's snobbiest society hostess? Decisions are so difficult! Sounds like everyone needs a day off at the spa. And Senior Spa Day promises to serve up further doses of scandal for New York's busiest private-school vixens.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Gossip Girl.......2007-08-22

Cecily Von Ziegesar really keeps things interesting in her seventh Gossip Girl book. In this book, Senior Spa Weekend is coming. Things with Blair and Nate aren't good, when Nate steals his parents yacht to bring with stoner friends on vacation. Blair gets mad because Nate was supposed to meet her at the Plaza Hotel. Dan leaves the Raves band after he pukes all over at a concert, and Jenny joins as the lead singer, that is until things fall apart with her life. Next year she won't be back at Constance Billard, unless she repeats ninth grade. Blair moves in with Vanessa and gives her apartment a makeover and hooks Vanessa up with Aaron. At the Senior Spa Weekend, Blair finds out that she has made it into Yale, and also that Nate is cheating on her with Lexique and she finds Serena making out with him. Interesting gossipy book. I really liked this one!

5 out of 5 stars BEST of the series.......2007-04-25

This book is my favorite of the entire series. Blair finally doesn't let Nate walk all over her and he realizes how much he took her for granted.
                    It is entertaining throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Rich Stob just like me.......2007-03-10

I am a rich snob I am spolied and a brat and have no problem with it. These books are great and i am 13. Lori T that said parents beware my mom let me get and on the back of the cover it says "Sex in the city for teens" Well on one of them it said. If you excatly stop worrying about what your child might do maybe just let her be. Maybe because you not as wealthy as some of them or me maybe this pisses you off too. This is coming from a child and I love these books.

                    4 out of 5 stars Gossip girls.........2006-11-02

Gossip girls is a good book. Its comparable to "Sex in the City" in teen characterisation. Its mostly about sex, drugs, and drama. Pretty much teen life now. The girls in this book are the prettiest and go to the finest schools.
They're basically the "IT" girls. They're really rude and act like snobs but what do you expect from rich teens.
By the title you can already tell what it is about which is gossip. Honestly there was some parts where I turned the page from boredom. Also other parts where I couldn't stop reading. There are four main characters. Blaire, Serena, Vennasa and Nate, Blair's boyfriend. The characters have just graduated from high school. In this book Blair and Nate are back together, couldn't be happier. Until Nate ends up screwing things up and tries to fix things. Blair and Serenna are best friends still, until Blair catches Serenna and Nate kissing. Blair ends up moving in with Vennassa. She also gets accecpted into Yale so she has accomplished a goal. It's a very good book. I recommend it to older teens, but not so much younger because of the crude humor.
I recommend it to anybody who would like to read real life books. However I would think you would want to read the other books first because this was the first one I read and I was a little lost. I would have to say Cecily von Ziegesar is a good author, she has a good grip on what's happening in real life and shoving it into a series of books and making it fun to read.
                    Overall I liked it.

                    5 out of 5 stars loved!.......2006-08-20

I loved this book, just like the others (from 1 to 6). You simply can't stop reading! I already bought numbers 8 and 9 and I can't wait to start reading... I MUST know what will happen in Blair and Serena's future!

                    Book Description

This book spans two million years of human evolution and explores the impact of economics on human evolution and natural history. The theory of evolution by natural selection has always relied in part on progress in areas of science outside of biology. By applying economic principles at the borderlines of biology, Haim Ofek shows how some of the outstanding issues in human evolution, such as the increase in human brain size and the expansion of the environmental niche humans occupied, can be answered. He identifies distinct economic forces at work, beginning with the transition from the feed-as-you-go strategy of primates, through hunter-gathering and the domestication of fire to the development of agriculture. This highly readable book will inform and intrigue general readers and those in fields such as evolutionary biology and psychology, economics, and anthropology.

To put it in a nutshell, quoting from Alexander J. Field, Haim Ofek "argues that humans were selected for exchange, and that both the harnessing of fire, and the development of a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, were dependent on a previous selection for exchange".
In any event, I would like to add that this work reminds me of Morris Berman's "Wandering God: A Study in Nomadic Spirituality", in the sense, that, both books treat plenty of issues which, although instrumental to defend their respective thesis, are so interesting that, even if you do not agree with their authors, they make well worth it reading them.

                      Book Description

Written by experienced experts in the field, this book describes the basics to the extent necessary for reliably judging the results from molecular modeling calculations.
Without unnecessary overhead, it leads readers from simple calculations on small molecules to the modeling of proteins and other relevant biomolecules. Beginners are guided through their first modeling experiment, while routine users of modeling software are provided with invaluable troubleshooting hints. A unique resource for students, researchers and lecturers, now available in this all-new, enlarged edition.

"If the currently popular 'Dummies' series of computer books were to publish a volume on molecular modeling this would be it" (Journal of the American Chemical Society)

"The book is well written and assumes no prior knowledge of molecular biology, statistical mechanics, or quantum chemistry. The authors provide practical hints for the application of the majority of available programs in computational chemistry" (Computers in Physics)

This book describes what is essentially docking calculations in the context of the Accerlys software. The text is very qualitative and does not provide enough instruction to do any "molecular modeling". It seems to be more guidlines for various software packages sold by Accerlys.

5 out of 5 stars great work, painful to read.......2005-12-22

This work, like all of Balzac's works, possesses his style, namely his perceptive insights into a Parisian's sole and the fabric of society during that time. Had these observations been relevent only to Paris of that time (the book takes place 1844-46) this book would not have the impact it does. I can almost imagine any one of these characters existing today, and wouldn't be surprised to open up the newspaper and reading a column with a similar story as this book.

It's a great look at what moves people to get ahead and step over other's who are more vulnerable. It is as if Balzac is saying that society is an extension of the apt phrase "survival of the fittest". The characters that ultimately succeed in this novel are the one's not with the most talent, but with the drive to get ahead in society. There are limits however, as a character who oversteps the laws of society is ultimately punished.

It is a painful novel to read as the characters who are the most sensitive and least versed in the ways of society suffer the most . Even a relatively minor character who is noble becomes withdrawn and pessimistic as a result of his inability to be charitable. It's definetely not an uplifting read, but it is very well written nontheless.

4 out of 5 stars For Love of Food: the Monomaniac made Sympathetic.......2005-04-28

*Cousin Bette* and *Cousin Pons*, Part One and Two of 'Poor Relations', are generally considered to be the last great gasp of French genius Honore de Balzac, inspired simultaneously and written in a fury to capitalize on the recent market for novel serializations. I'm not sure about this "last gasp" claim yet - *The Wrong Side of Paris*, Balzac's last novel (recently republished!) is on my reading list - but they certainly are great in and of themselves, *Bette* more than *Pons*, in my opinion. Not to degenerate this work in the slightest: being within the shadow of a masterpiece is close enough for posterity.

'Poor Relations' tackles the subject of the individual and its family; but where in *Bette* the poor relation was the spinster cousin, surrounded and revered by her family while she secretly schemed to destroy them, in this novel Pons is the outcast and victim, humiliated by his wealthy relations for his eccentric behavior and mooching ways. For Pons loves food - sumptuous feasts, where he can indulge the demands of his gastronomical addiction - and when his lack of social grace irritates his relatives to the point of banishment, he always wheedles his way back into their hearts with exquisite presents: Pons' monomania extends to collecting the great masterpieces of art, hoarding them away in his private salon where he can bask in the glory of oil and gold. After a scheme intended to permanently set his place at the dinner-table goes awry, however, the old man finds himself an exile, snubbed and refused at the homes of his relatives. The heartbreak - and the stomach-ache - drives the poor man to his deathbed, one hounded by prospective vultures seeking to profit on his jealously-kept collection.

*Cousin Pons*, on reflection, is perhaps one of Balzac's bitterest and unrelentingly tragic novels, sharing similarities to *Pere Goirot* in its plot, structure and sharp denouncement of the materialistic bourgeois society that had come in fashion after the July Revolution. Greed, avarice, selfishness, poisonous coveting (literally), corruption, hypocrisy and blackmail all raise their heads in this novel, a gaggle of vipers ranging from the highest of society (the infuriating Presidente) to the lowest dregs (the despicable La Cibot), and all those that scheme in between (the ghoulish Fraisier). Pons and his roommate Schmucke, gentle failures in the game of life, haven't a chance among these beasts: and it is heartache to see the villainous deeds done to these two men for the glitter of lucre and the whiff of prestige. Balzac was never much of one for happily-ever-after, but most of his tragedies have some sort of uplifting resolution, some cosmic vengeance dealt upon at least a few of the miscreants (and *Bette* was probably the most satisfying in this regard); *Pons* refutes this technique, leaving the reader shaken and upset at the circumstances of the conclusion...at the _reality_ of it.

This volume is not quite within Balzac's creative pantheon: it's too slim (!), lacking the complexity and the captivating digressions of a *Lost Illusions*; but man o man does that ending work - for the novel, and as a conclusion to one of the most ambitious artistic statements of the past two centuries.

Four and a half stars, rounded down.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Balzac's best novels.......2002-10-03

                          I'm a Balzac's french fan.
"Cousin Pons" is one of my favourites Balzac's novels.
This novels speaks about art (music, paintings, ...), social relationships in a family and in a flat, and over there of FRIENDSHIP.
The friendship between Pons and Schmücke is the most facinating aspect of this novel (may be it's more than a frienship : a platonic love ?).
