Here I Stand is an amazingly interesting read!.......2007-09-19
I purchased the book after watching the movie Luther with Joseph Fiennes (sp?). I usually do that in reverse order but not this time. The book very logically and clearly (and with great clarity and attention to detail) portrays the inner life and events going on at that time in Luther's life. It is a great review of history, the Catholic Church and the mind of Martin Luther.
The only downside is that you often need to read it with a dictionary present due to some of the words and context in which it is written that are not readily used in daily discussions. Great way to learn them though.
This is a wonderful read and one that I could not put down once I started. He is a very influential and fascinating historical figure.
A man named Martin, a Reformer named Luther.......2007-08-12
Martin Luther is one of the historical protagonists who has had the greatest amout of biographies written. This is a biography which displays not only the Reformer, but also the man Martin Luther. Luther's phrase, chosen as title, reveals the essence of the man: "Here I stay, I could not do differently. So help me God".
"By faith alone...".......2007-04-02
Having read Luther's "Bondage of the Will" I was interested in the Reformer's life and how God transformed him. In Roland H. Bainton's book you feel the man and his convictions. Bainton includes many lengthy quotes by Luther himself, so the reader begins to "feel" the man and his faith. The book also has many B & W wood-cut illustrations from that time, so you get to sense their history.
Bainton focuses on how Luther became a monk and from a monk to a world changing reformer. Luther's struggle with God's righteousness was so pivotal in his early days in the monastery, he was led to study of the Holy Scriptures by order of his senior. And it ultimately led to re-discovery of the Gospel -- that man is justified (declared righteous) by faith alone in what Christ has done for us. This revolutionized Luther's theology and his own life. Luther's emphasis, "by faith alone" is the heart of the gospel. He does not dismiss the importance of good works, but emphasized that good works cannot save and only faith saves. This was important distinction to him. And this book captures this fact about Luther well.
Moreover, the book pictures Luther as translator of the Bible into German language from original Hebrew and Greek. It is incredible feat by one man. He also wrote many hymns (including that famous "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God") to be sung at the church.
The book was fun to read as well. I couldn't stop reading. You will KNOW Luther in this book. Highly recommended.
Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther.......2007-01-10
This is an exceptional book for objective historical and theological perspectives of the life of Martin Luther. I have read the book as part of seminary studies, though the book is written with an undertone for lay understanding. The major pluses of the book are the honest depiction of the character of Martin Luther and how his personal theology developed over his pastoral years with highlights of how his insights helped cause major reforms of theological throughout the world as well as bringing the book of the bible in a readable and understandable format to his beloved German people.
Excellent Book.......2006-11-10
The Pastor at my church referred me to this Book. And it was excellent. Very thorough on Luther's life.

One of many Martin Luther biographies.......2007-03-08
I am reviewing the 1950, Mentor Books Fifteenth Printing.
This book is well laid out. Much of the material is in lecture form. There are twenty-two content headings, 12 page Bibliography, References, Source of Illustrations, and comprehensive Index. The illustrations are just that monochrome sketches.
Roland H. Bainton received an A.B. degree from Whitman College, and B.D. and Ph.D. degrees form Yale University and form Oberlin College, Dr. Theological Seminary and from Oberlin College. He is a Specialist in Reformation history.
There are many biography and reference books on Martin Luther, each with its own strength s and weaknesses. This one by Roland H. Bainton is pretty comprehensive and goes into more depth than most. Do not get out your highlighter or you will highlight every page.
This is the story of a religious leader who is well known for leading the Protestant Reformation. "I cannot...I will not...Recant! Here I Stand."

Book Description
Born in 1938, R. H. Miller was the oldest of four hearing boys with deaf parents in Defiance, Ohio, a small agricultural community. Deaf Hearing Boy is Miller’s compelling account of the complex dynamics at work in his family, including the inter-generational conflicts in which he found himself, the oldest child of deaf adults (CODA), caught in the middle.
In 1942, Miller’s family moved to Toledo so that his father could find work. There, they fared well during World War II because his father worked in manufacturing as a member of Roosevelt’s “civilian army.” Miller’s mother loved urban life, where she and the family could immerse themselves in the Toledo Deaf community, especially at the Toledo Silent Club. The end of the war marked the end of prosperity for the Miller family. Returning soldiers displaced all of the deaf workers, who then had to scrape for a living. The Millers, close to destitution, returned to the family farm in Defiance.
Miller depicts the return to farm life as one of tremendous hardship, both economically and psychologically. They lived off the land from hand to mouth. He also describes his grandparents’ distrust of his parents because they were deaf, and he writes candidly of his role as an unwilling agent in the misunderstandings between them. Miller also portrays the bias he endured in school and town. Parents of girlfriends would force their daughters to stop dating him for fear that his family’s deafness would be passed down.
In the early 1950s, Miller’s grandparents sold the farm and his parents returned to industrial work. Miller excelled at school, and eventually left home for college and life in academia. His later reflections reveal a deep, abiding respect for his parents, despite his early difficulties. Deaf Hearing Boy presents an intimate depiction of a changing time for hearing and deaf Americans alike, when the family farm disappeared and the isolation of Deaf people also began to fade. In witnessing this transformation of society through his family’s life, Miller adds an important chapter to the collective narrative of Deaf people, one made all the more poignant and vivid as told by their Deaf Hearing boy.
Customer Reviews:
Deaf Hearing Boy.......2007-01-10
This is a memoir of a boy with normal hearing who is raised by two deaf parents. It reveals the problems and prejudice faced by this subset of individuals and one boy's never say die techniques of overcoming them. It demonstrates as well the problems, both internal and external of the deaf community. It is a very touching and visceral account of the author's trip from infancy to adulthood in very challenging circumstances which ultimately results in strength and resilience of character. It's a quick read and well worth the time.
Recommending to anyone who enjoys autobiographies!.......2006-05-25
R.H. Miller provides very descriptive detail with every sentence. This wonderful book is an autobiography of R.H. Miller's life as he remembers it as a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults). A fascinating book that you can hardly put down.
A compelling testimony drawn directly from heart and memory.......2005-01-11
The second volume of the Deaf Lives series, Deaf Hearing Boy: A Memoir is the true story the author, born in 1938 as the oldest of four hearing boys to deaf parents. Deaf Hearing Boy chronicles growing up in changing times, and the author's own experience as the sometimes unwilling liaison between his deaf parents and hearing grandparents. The end of World War II brought poverty to the family, as returning soldiers displaced his parents' jobs and they had to resort to scraping by on the family farm. Deaf Hearing Boy chronicles an era when small farms gradually faded from the landscape, and cultural connectivity began to erode the isolation of deaf people. It tells of prejudice against the deaf, from fathers who would not let the author date their daughters for fear that the author carried a gene for deafness that would be passed on, to misunderstandings within the family and more. And it tells of a young man's abiding respect for his parents, despite the problems unique to a deaf couple striving to raise hearing children. A compelling testimony drawn directly from heart and memory.

Book Description
Based on a decade of field research undertaken mainly in the north and central areas of Namibia since 1993, this report poses questions about fundamental purposes of music-making, and the conscious response of people to the contemporary Namibian socio-political situation. It provides a broad overview of music emanating from different cultural practices in Namibia, and relates this to the State’s political strategies for ensuring unity and nation-building through policy-making, education and broadcast media. The changes that occur in musical practices are seen as strategic cultural choices and ongoing identity-formation.

Book Description
Serene, beautiful, inviolate.
Rich in magic and treasure, to those who hear of its legends it is the ultimate paradise. To the beleagured elves of Toril it is the ultimate refuge. But to many it is the ultimate prize.
At the heart of its story is Amlaruil, Queen of All Elves. When Evermeet comes under massive, devastating attack, her sacrifice holds the last hope of saving the elven homeland.
Customer Reviews:
Epic journey to the past!.......2007-05-23
Very rich and ancient, the Elven world of Toril unfolds within these pages that are easily readable, thanks to this author. She is the best this publisher has to offer. Her stunning debut in 1991 was Elfshadow. This gives the reader a thorough background filled with the magic that one comes to expect from Elaine C!
Using her "magical sight", Elaine gives the reader a rare glimpse of King Zaor and his grand kingdom. In her voice, it seems she is an eyewitness. The story is a little dry at times. These elves live thousands of years, so its not action packed. When the action does pick up, it does so dramatically. There is a sinister plot that started several novels ago.
This grand tale says much about this fantasy world, that it carries over into our world as well. Social idealism, racial bigotry, internal terroism. Yes, Elven towers get destroyed by evil terrorist factions. Remember, this novel was first published in 1998. Food for thought!
Fantastic!.......2007-01-10
I'm not a fan of Elaine Cunningham's novels, apart from Counselors and Kings Trilogy, which was very good. I always find her main characters more or less annoying (Danilo Thann and Liriel Baenre, in that order), and that usually takes her traditionally excellent plots and style out of the spotlight. This book has no such characters and it is plain brilliant, speaking in FR terms, of course.
The book itself is rather different from other FR novels, since it follows the island kingdom of Evermeet from its very creation to the present time (Faerun's present time, that is). It touches not only every major event in the history of Evermeet, but also in the history of Faerun's elves as a race. (Crown Wars, Moonblades...).
The book hasn't got a single main character, but instead it follows a number of important characters through Evermeet's history. Motivations differ greatly from character to character, but all of the "main" characters had an impact on the island kingdom.
The book covers a HUGE span of time, and the writer uses that in an excellent way, so you understand the importance of some events considered minor only later on in the book. For example, the way certain items pop up time after time over a 15000 year span.
I'm trying to think of something I didn't like in this book, but really nothing is coming into my mind. Really.
Whoever liked Tolkien's "Silmarilion" is going to like this book as well. It's not as complex, or to put it more plainly - confusing as J.R.R.'s book, so those who didn't like "Silmarilion" for that reason should give this book a shot. Wizards (or TSR as they were known back then when this book was published) put the writing of this book in real hands.
A must-read for every FR fan, and a sincere recommendation to every fantasy reader.
This is a textbook..........2005-10-09
When reading this book, the format of it reading more like a history than a fantasy left me not wanting to read more of it. I found myself skipping entire sections of text just to move further into the book and get it done with. Perhaps if I had read more books in this particular series, I would not have been so confused and otherwise uninterested.
I have read other books by this same author and found those titles very interesting, which was the primary reason I decided to read this one.
Evermeet is the modern version of the Silmarillion........2004-06-24
Along the lines of JRR Tolkien's classic, the Silmarillion, and with a slight touch of Spelljammer and Planescape, comes Elaine Cunningham's Forgotten Realms novel, Evermeet: Island of Elves.
It deals with the Elves and their long journey through the eons up until the present (as far as the Forgotten Realms world is concerned).
It does bring to mind Ed Greenwood's and Jeff Grubb's Cormyr, and one could easily claim that Evermeet deals with the Elves in a similar way that Cormyr presents the history of the Cormyreans, or Cormytes as is more common within the Kingdom.
The book is so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to another universe and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. Elaine Cunnigham has truly outdone herself once again and has presented us with a masterpiece of literature the likes of which we have seen only in JRR Tolkien's work, RA Salvatore's The Dark Elf and Icewind Dale trilogies and in authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends trilogies.
She has done a FANTASTIC job of both acquiring vast knowledge relevant to the People as well as presenting this material relating to the customs, the religion and the history of the Elves, efficiently and successfully! Her solid grasp of factual detail makes her very capable of providing the necessary background needed to carry out the difficult task of writing Forgotten Realms novels, especially one as complex as this, which is something often missing from the work of many Fantasy authors. Do keep in mind though, that Evermeet is not a book for the light-hearted, instead it is more tuned to the needs/taste of the Forgotten Realms die-hards (like myself...)
Gods, Elves, Dragons, Magic, Honor, Love and swordfights are all about. Elaine Cunningham's Elfshadow, Elfsong, and Silver Shadows make up for a great trilogy and are a "must read" together with Evermeet, especially for all those who have a soft spot for everything Elven!
a fast paced and wonderful read.......2004-03-15
After Reading through Daughter of the Drow I dove head first into this book to find out more to boost my knowledge of the Realms Elves and their deep history.
I must admit there where times when the story jumped and I found myself flitting back through pages to work out what was happening (though I am pretty new to the Realms books so maybe that's just me)
But just like Elaine's other book I mentioned I found myself thrown into the story and after a short while found myself enjoying the who's related to whom and how side of the book.
The story itself is wonderful if you can keep up with its speed. The characters are a bit of a mixed bag but most are well very written and wish there was more story written of them.
If you were interested in looking into the history of the elves of the Forgotten Realms, I'd say you need not look anywhere else.

This book shows strategies for fundraising and investment in this new world moving towards partnership donation based on social enterprise. Explains the new order and the shifts in activity and thinking required to be successful in the future.
Gives a Strategic View of Every Aspect of Fundraising.......2005-08-20
I picked up this book just as the board of directors of the local theater group sent me to set up a campaign to raise capital for a new building. All of a sudden I was faced with the idea of raising lots of money instead of just the small amounts we need to put on individual productions.
To my surprise, although I guess I shouldn't have been, Chapter 7 is on Capital Campaigns. She summarizes them as: 'unique, occasional, exhausting, exciting, and productive; they focus organizations on a particular goal during a finite period of time and allow us to sharpen our sense of purpose and impact.' To that I can only say: Yup!
Ms. Grace has obviously been there, done that, not only in raising money for capital, but every other kind of fundraising activity as well.
This book is well written, and it positioned at a higher level than most fundraising books. By that I mean that she treats fundraising as almost an art form. Something where you don't need to feel like you're begging for a handout. Highly recommended.
Great book for an non profit!.......2005-07-22
This book, is well presented and provides excellent information for any non profit.
