Book Description
Hybrid Geographies is a critical examination of the relation between culture and nature; the human and the non-human; the social and the material. The text demonstrates that culture and nature are not antitheses. They are intimately and variously linked.
General arguments - informed by recent work in social theory - are illustrated throughout with detailed case-study material that shows how nature and culture are interrelated. The objective is to interrogate how ideas and practices mark off and regulate the commerce between the human and the non-human. Case studies that demonstrate the argument include an examination of genetically modified foods; a discussion of the idea of "wildlife"; and an inquiry into the management of wilderness spaces.
Hybrid Geographies is essential reading for all students in the social sciences with an interest in nature, space and social theory.

Cumbersome tome.......2007-01-12
In Hybrid Geographies, Whatmore attempts to invent a new way of approaching geographic understanding of space, such as allying thinking space with thinking through the body, mapping "lively commotion" of associations, recognizing "intimate, sensible, hectic bonds," etc [3]. What results, however, are long elaborations that are still descriptive rather than analytical. To match the seemingly difficult concepts she was working with, she used the most cumbersome and difficult language she could find, with more (un)helpful combi-nations of Paratheses and Hyphens than you could shake a (st)ick at. By the end of the book (required reading for a geography graduate seminar), actually, by the end of the second chapter, I was asking, so what? For me, her experiment completely failed and here's why:
In chapter 3, in "becoming" elephant, she traces how elephants are being translated through conversation and tourism networks into abstract units of consumption, "drained of all the multi-sensual business of becoming elephant" (55). Yet in her discussion of Earthwatch Institute, she focuses on the glossy literature and marketing strategies used to attract volunteers to projects and fails to connect this "thinking space" to the body, namely those of the volunteers. Had she spoken with them, or participated in a project herself, she would have seen the incredible spiritual and emotional dimensions that bring many of the volunteers to these projects, driving them to pay substantial amounts of money ($5000 in my case) to bodily feel those "lively commotions" and "intimate, sensible bonds." She doesn't come anywhere close to animating these feelings, what it's like to look into a "wild" elephant's eye and see the incredible intelligence and "humanity" that's there; to watch these massive creatures trot at surprising speeds and yet not make a sound because of the incredible engineering of their bodies; to witness the caring and cohesion of family units. She doesn't talk about what can happen as a result of such an experience (finding it so profound you quit a well-paying job to go back to grad school), or the passion that motivates directors and researchers to do whatever they can to "help" these animals, while bringing local knowledge and human issues into the process as well. Certainly she brings attention to the changing positionality of wildlife, but her treatment is just a draining and one dimensional as any other. What was the point, where is the meaning? Just because you call it hybrid doesn't mean it works any better.

Book Description
There is 'The Ugly One,' whose only solace comes when she is locked inside her own head. In 'Wanted: A Thug,' a teenager seeks advice on how to steal her best friend's bad-guy boyfriend. And then there's Erika, who only likes white boys. Sharon Flake takes readers through the minds of girls trying to define themselves while struggling to remain relevant to the boys in their lives. This is a complex, often humorous, always on-point exposition of black youth resolving to find self-worth . . . any way they know how.

Boys, Girls and Hormones.......2007-06-19
We read this one a month ago. The title led us to believe this book was about teens relationship with God, which would've been a good subject to read about. But this was not about God. It was ten stories about teen relationships. We pretty much enjoyed reading them all. Our favorite was A Letter to My Daughter. We enjoyed this one the most because a father was writing to his daughter explaining to her what boys were all about and what their intentions were when dating or having a girlfriend. It's always good to hear it from a male perspective. This way, girls will have the inside scoop and know exactly what to lookout for.
On the negative side, we wished that some of the characters were of other ethnic groups instead of mostly urban African American. The story, "I Like White Boys" was good. We wanted to read more racially integrated stories. Sometimes it's difficult to read slang. We try to read books that doesn't have a lot of slang because it's not the standard in this society. We recognize that urban communities have citizens that uses slang and improper English, but we're trying to change all that by incorporating ourselves into this American society by speaking proper or standard English. It's not that we disapprove of urban books. No, not at all because we love the BLUFORD SERIES! It's just that we want to be able to articulate a sentence when we go on job interviews.
All in all, it was an okay read and we would recommend it to other teens.

Excellent Reading.......2007-01-26
This book was excellent. We used this book for a discussion with a youth group. The young ladies enjoyed all the stories. They could relate to the young people in the stories. It gave them a picture of how girls see themselves and how boys and men around them view them. I enjoyed reading the book and I was excited to discuss it with them. I would encourage young and old to read this book.
it had it's good and bad moments...i'll agree.......2006-12-26
So i aint no good girl: ***** five stars, it was one of my favorites. I'm glad the book started with this story because it makes up for some of the crappier ones. I like how Ms. Flake portrays this girl as tough and scared at the same time. She doesn't let anyone talk her down, except Raheem, who abuses her and she feels that if she just "goes with the flow" she'll keep him.
Girl didn't i say i dont write no letters: ***** Five stars again. Excellent. i love how i can relate to devita about her liking Jaquel and gaining enough strength to tell him how she really feels, through letters.
The ugly one: **** four stars. it was OK i didn't understand the complete end, when she is dancing with the Jamaican dude, is he real? I would've liked it more if he was a real person.
Mookie in Love: **** four stars. It was OK as well. the story would've been better if it was in his perspective, not the cousins.
Don't be disrepecting me: *** Three stars. I didn't like it that much. Ms. Flake seemed to rush into the story and it didn't end well, at all.
I like White Boys: **** Fours stars. I liekd it, i could actually relate, but it would've been better if Erika picked Chet or Johnny or that guy with the blonde hair, i dont know. I don't think Ms. Flake ended the story well. Too much suspense i guess.
Jacob's rules: ***** Excellent story great narration. I liked Marimba a lot too.
I know a stupid boy when i see one: *** i did not like the story. i wont really get into it because there are too many things to talk about but i will say this. UNREALISTIC
Hunting for boys: ***** Great story. no comment. Too good for words.
wanted: a thug: ****\* four and a half. I liked this story. Great suspense. I wish Ms Flake could make a continuation of these..oh well *sigh*
Not a boy and letter to my daughter are good as well. Both *** three stars.
Who am I without him?.......2006-11-22
I enjoyed reading this book because it had to do with teenagers just like me and how they handle some problems. This book is a great way to show teeagers how teenagers hadle their problems. So if you read this book you will understand how teenagers handle some issues. And if you are a adult then you will see how us teenagers handle some problems that we get.
Excellent!.......2006-10-27
Sharon, you did an excellent job with these short stories. My favorite was "Hunting for Boys." This book is all about girls and they boys they like. It's about learning about relationships. It demonstrates puberty and hormones kicking in. It reminds me of the saying by Dolly Parton on confusion: "they don't know whether to scratch their watch or wind their behind." Moms and Dads, please get this book for your daughters. They will enjoy the stories and may even find themselves in some of them. Each story has a different premise but they all tie into the same plot--getting with a boy. It reminds me when I first started liking boys when I was in junior high. I definitely recommend this book for the average teenager. Well done, Sharon, and keep 'em coming.

Book Description
Recent progress in high-throughput screening, combinatorial chemistry and molecular biology has radically changed the approach to drug discovery in the pharmaceutical industry. New challenges in synthesis result in new analytical methods. At present, typically 100,000 to one million molecules have to be tested within a short period and, therefore, highly effective screening methods are necessary for today's researchers - preparing and characterizing one compound after another belongs to the past. Intelligent, computer-based search agents are needed and "virtual screening" provides solutions to many problems. Such screening comprises innovative computational techniques designed to turn raw data into valuable chemical information and to assist in extracting the relevant molecular features.
This handbook is unique in bringing together the various efforts in the field of virtual screening to provide the necessary methodological framework for more effective research. Leading experts give a thorough introduction to the state of the art along with a critical assessment of both successful applications and drawbacks. The information collated here will be indispensable for experienced scientists, as well as novices, working in medicinal chemistry and related disciplines.

Book Description
Get ahead in math by solving these real-world and fun-to-do word problems. Math by Example is an excellent resource of various math word problems. It is known that success on aptitude test like the SAT is directly tied to one's ability to solve word problems. This book was written with the intent of helping anyone wishing to develop this ability with ease. While most problems' complexity does not go beyond 7-10 grade level, their diversity allows one to fully flex mental muscles. You may even have fun!

Finally Something Different.......2004-08-25
This book, for students 7th grade and up, hits the biggest soft spots most of today's students have. The problem with the math curriculum used by most schools today is that students are given formula after formula to memorize and blindly use in problem solving. In this way, the kids never learn to think critically, they do not perform well on big standardized exams such as the SATs, and unfortunately they often fear math for the rest of their life. This workbook is different because it develops the student's ability to reason and use logic. It has both number and word problems. The word problems use real life examples and ask the student to integrate several concepts at once. These problems also teach comprehensive reading skills. The number problems are superb for preparing a student for Algebra 1 and 2 type SAT questions.

Best way to experience his journals.......2007-10-01
Henry David Thoreau's journal is his masterpiece, and somewhat different to his more polished works.
This is by far the best way to experience his journal, too. Short excerpted collections are problematic because you cannot get used to the flow of his writing, and the changing nature of it over the lifespan of the journal. This book, which is the full year of 1851, may contain less-than-stellar entries, but it also contains some rippers, and is definitely the best way to experience it. It was about this time in his life that Thoreau decided to stop using his journal just as a source for his other books, and rather to create it for its own sake. And it shows - this is not writing to be chopped up and excerpted, but to be enjoyed in its entirety.
The best possible introduction to the masterpiece of his life - 5 stars.
Glorious!.......2002-07-03
Thoreau's journals are an insight into the man who thrived on simplicity. This book captures the years in which he was making his final revisions on "Waldon." His journal reflects his masterpiece and his book is then reflected back into his journal writings. If you are at all interested in Thoreau's writings, this is a needed companion to understand such a brilliant mind.
The Perfect Introduction to Thoreau's Journals.......2000-06-18
Many readers exposure to Thoreau's published self-contained books like _Walden_ and _The Maine Woods_ are intrigued enough to look deeper. Inevitably, you end up with the Journals.
The journals are so long and copious, that it can be hard to decide where to start. I don't know off-hand how many pages or words there are, but there are enough of Thoreau's Journals out there to last you 3 to 5 years of reading.
So! You should buy this starter book to introduce you to the flavor of the Journals. If you also read some of the Biographies out there, you learn that Thoreau's life went through some distinct periods, which will be reflected in the different Journals. Many folks think 1851 was a magic and expanding year for him, and that's why this book follows this year alone.
My only complaint about the book using this time frame is that it sort of Pornographically selects from all the years of the Journals--and pornographically selects from 1851. As if all T's days were charmed, all rich with experience.
But the Journal selections excerpted here and this book as a whole have many good qualities that outway my only complaint. They are:
1.--This book follows a year, and T was very much influenced by the seasons. Coming full circle in a year with T is good reading.
2.--The book doesn't try to do too much. If an Introduction book does its job, it should leave you wanting more deep info on the subject. This book did that for me.
3.--There are a couple-few cool replications of drawings T did in his journal. Bonus points for these.
Overall, the subject material here is awesome. If you only know Thoreau through his published "books" and if you like them (especially the naturalist part of them), the Journals will change your world. This book does a solid good job of introducing you to the Journals.
