Book Description
2004 ECPA Gold Medallion winner!
Soon after September 11, the news media stepped up its coverage of the plight of Martin and Gracia Burnham, the missionary couple captured and held hostage in the Philippine jungle by terrorists with ties to Osama Bin Laden. After a year of captivity, and a violent rescue that resulted in Martin's death, the world watched Gracia Burnham return home in June 2002 with a bullet wound in the leg and amazing composure.
In this riveting personal account, Burnham tells the real story behind the news about their harrowing ordeal, about how it affected their relationship with each other and with God, about the terrorists who held them, about the actions of the U.S. and Philippine governments, and about how they were affected by the prayers of thousands of Christians throughout the world.

Modern Day Heroes.......2007-09-24
It's hard to express how much I admire Martin and Gracia Burnham. It's been at least two years, I suppose, since I read this book but I still remember most every chapter. So, if it's a riveting on-the-edge-of-your-seat book you're looking for, here's a good one.
However, if you're looking for God working incarnate, this may be where to start. God took two "ordinary" people and made something most extraordinary out of their tragedy. Two things I especially appreciate from the book are 1) Gracia's brutally honest, no-holds-barred look at herself during the ordeal and 2) Martin's "speaking" through the book though he didn't physically write a word.
I would love to meet Gracia someday and would have loved to have met Martin. Read this book and you'll still somehow carry them both around with you.
Great Book.......2007-07-04
This is an excellent book written by a courageous woman. The main reason that I bought it was to learn more about the insurgents that captured Gracia and her husband. Gracia did a very good job in portraying the trials and tribulations endured by all of the hostages during her year in captivity. She also provides invaluable insights into the insurgents and the faults in their beliefs in Islam that did not match what is written in the Koran.
Burnham Story in Print.......2007-05-02
I found this book fascinating. It's definitely the words of a missionary, as Christianity is celebrated throughout the ordeal in print. Martin Burnham is revealed as a true man of men and he kept Gracia grounded throughout the book, she makes sure of it. Their story was tragic. The book was written quite simply and I finished it in 2 sittings. I could not put it down and it was put very clearly and simply. It was less biased in print than the interviews I've seen with her. She is certainly entitiled to her views of the Philippine government and US support. It was a delicate dance for the U.S. and she acknowledges this. The whole situation was unfortunate. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING.
I was surprised to see so much about Islam itself and why her captors did such rational and irrational things while she was in captivity. It's biased at times, but being written by a Christian missionary it should be. Thats accuracy of HER JOURNEY.
encouragement.......2007-04-28
Gracie recalls, in amazing detail, her year in the jungle as a hostage. This book is a must read for anyone who is ever bothered by their own problems.
More Al Quieda activities.......2007-03-07
This book is about the kidnapping of Christian Missionaries Martin and Gracia Burham in the summer of 2001. The Phillipino Abu Sayyaf branch of Al Quieda was responsible. Taken with a group of rich tourists from various foreign countries, their abduction was originally done for quick randsoms. But, the American government refuses to participate in this so they were in captivity for over a year! Other tourists were either killed or their ransoms were paid. No other source I've read mentions this as one of the financial operations of Al Quieda.
I loved this book because it really makes you think about what is important in life.

Foreign relation with Communist China in 1950's.......2003-06-06
Although it needs gut to read about all these gruesome tortures on a foreigner, not only an American Catholic Priest in China as an instructor taught at the now extinct Auroa University in ShangHai China, established by the French...my Dad's alma matar....
I cannot believe that librarians can discard this book from the public libraries and not regard it as a history book. A piece of history that Americans still has not learn a lesson from because it involves "religion"-Christianity.

This is what they DID teach me.......2005-05-19
I found this book to be glib, disrespectful, and pseudo-historical. I could not escape the over-riding and simplistic theme that all Native Americans are good, all European invaders are evil. Ex. On page 14, Christopher Columbus is referred to as "Chris" Columbus, and is labeled a "Johnny-come-lately". Ex. On page 22, It is claimed that in 1754, George Washington led a raid that killed a French diplomat, which led to a defeat at Fort Necessity. Here the author feels it appropriate to quip, "first battle, first defeat", as if to impugn the first great general and president of the United States of America.
If you like your history written by an author who believes that people living in previous generations should have their actions judged using today's ethical standards, than you will be fine with this book. This style of writing is easy and fashionable. If, however, you are looking for historical facts presented in their appropriate historical context, I believe you will find this book lacking.
Interesting. Worth the read...........2003-12-03
As any historian will tell you, there are many sides to an historic event and the story is told from the viewpoint of the victors. Wright attempts to illustrate unknown facts, and clarify popular misconceptions about historical events in "What They Didn't Teach You about the Wild West." While I enjoyed Wright's interpretation of history, I found the format to be at times confusing. Facts were jumbled together in large chapters without subheadings which made browsing confusing. Perhaps this book would be better if arranged in chronological order? This complaint was small, however in light of what "What they-" has to offer.
The parts I particularly enjoyed were the colonization facts, information about early prostitution and early American 'attitudes' towards women, other races and cultures. Perhaps if there is a reprint, there should be a chapter about gender roles included?
Definitely interesting enough to pick up for scholars and writers of western fiction. A good solid work.
A Supplement to Those Old Movies.......2001-05-02
Mike Wright is a TV writer in Chicago who won an "Emmy". This book covers some of the 19th Century West, from around 1816 (the year without a summer) to about 1916. Thirteen chapters cover various topics from that century, and tells you things left out of the movies and TV shows.
Those over forty remember various movies and TV shows about cowboys and cattle herds ("Gunsmoke", "Bonanza", etc.). But this era lasted only about 25 years. A cow sold for $4 in TX, $40 in KS; we would call them arbitrageurs nowadays. People preferred the taste of longhorn cattle over domestic beeves. Is there something to be relearned here? Free-range meat?
It retells the importance of the railroads in the history of the 19th century America, and the Chicago stockyards (another memory). Railroads long ago spent their Govt. subsidies; trucking still benefits from Govt. super-highway system.
Mike Wright questions Wild Bill Hickok's claim to having killed "a hundred men", saying it was maybe 15 or so as a cattle town lawman. But Wm. Hickok had been a Jayhawker, Civil War soldier, Army scout, etc. I wouldn't dispute that claim, exaggerated or not.
A range of lively facts.......2001-02-20
From the origins of 'dude' in dude ranch to the history of the Afro-American cowboy and his prominence in the west, What They Didn't Teach You About the Wild West gathers a range of lively facts which provides a fun and involving collection for leisure browsers and history students seeking supplemental reading.
What I learned was You (Mike) need to do more research!.......2001-01-26
Found an error in Chapter 26, page 280, re: the last surviving Civil War veterans. The last Union veteran (Albert Woolson) died on August 2, 1956 (not the stated 1951)at age 109. The last Confederate veteran, Walter W. Williams (not the stated "Walter Washington")died on December 19, 1959 (not the stated 1952) at age 117. The reference for the above is the New York Times newspaper, August 2, 1956.

Book Description
The biography of Michael Stiedler is an inspirational tale of a triumph of the human spirit. Seriously brain-injured when he was four days old, Mike, now thirty two, learned to walk, talk, see, and take care of himself through fifteen years of therapy. More important, he also found his own personality and ways to explore the world, to reach out and make contact with the world and people he wanted to know. He has accomplished all of this with wit and humor, indefatigable persistence, hard-won intelligence, and will, despite his remaining handicaps.
His journey is told through his mother's recounting of the kind of stories that all mothers share: the simple experiences of youth, the funny incidents, the clever exchanges, the frustrating disappointments, the adventures, and the unexpected developments. Many of the hallmarks of a young person's life are brought to vivid life and made unique by Mike's handicaps and his distinctive perspective. Join Mike for holidays, school, jogs, dining out, being one of the guys, and finding new goals and making his own choices. Join Mike and his mom as they make this inspirational journey, walking in the same pair of running shoes through life.

A Joyous Journey.......2005-04-19
Mike's World is a celebration of the life of Mike Stiedler told through the eyes of his loving, tenacious mother. Seriously brain damanged since four days old, Mike has grown into adulthood learning the secrets of the human spirit, the joys of hard-fought accomplishments and the bonds of friendship that unite us all. Patricia Leary delivers on her promise of showing the reader how Michael has spun gold from straw. How else to explain the poignant poetry of someone supposedly void of language skills or the dedication of daily, three- mile runs by someone so limited in vision and balance? Once you enter Mike's World, I guarantee that you too will believe in the triumph of the human spirit.
A Book Celebrating Life and Determination.......2004-07-16
Patricia Leary's son Mike is brain damaged, but neither she nor Mike have let his handicap deter them from making their lives together as mother and son full of joy, love, and humor. While the author relates stories of her little boy's growing up challenged by limited motor skills and sight, achievement and success and the indomitable spirits of the duo are the focus of each chapter. Their inspiring story will have meaning not only for parents of handicapped children, but for all parents because the task of raising any child is filled with questions, worries, joy, success, and pride. All parents and children are the same, and Patricia Leary's portrait of Mike will inspire every reader.
Mike's World - A Tribute To Life.......2004-06-23
"Mike's World" is a genuine tribute to the journey of being a human being. A truly inspirational, witty, uplifting and downright spiritual work, I've read it more than once and found something a little miraculous for me in each reading. For anyone with a heart, this book is well worth owning. If "Diary for Nicholas" touched your soul, "Mike's World" will take you places only a powerfully written non-fiction book can.
This is clearly NOT a book about a challenged child, but a book that will make you see everyone around you differently. The most powerful 148 pages I've read in many, many years!

Book Description
Women's filmmaking in France is a source of both delight and despair. On the one hand, the numbers are impressive - during the period in question, over 250 feature length films were made by over 100 women directors in France. On the other hand, despite the heritage of French feminism, French women directors characteristically disclaim their gender as a significant factor in their filmmaking.
This book provides a critical guide to the range of films made by women during the 1980s and 1990s. It analyses the effects of `postfeminism', women's desire to enter the mainstream, and the recent impact of a new generation of filmmakers. The films are categorised as either personal films (intimate psychological dramas relating to key stages in life) or as genre films (which demonstrate women's ability to rework and appropriate popular genres).

Everyone Loves Dragons anf Giants.......2006-07-04
The name "bestiary" for this work is a misnomer, as this is not anything resembling the "Creature Catalogue" or "Monster Manual." Instead AC10 is really a collection of 15 short adventures--similar to those presented in REF3 "The Book of Lairs"--featuring a specific type of giant or dragon race. These adventures are for characters up to 30th level of experience. Many of the adventures also contain a section for the DM about the nature of various dragons and giant, like the "On Stone Giant Creation and Origin." Also included is a Dragon Spell Generator to determine what spells a particular type of spell-casting dragon has.
"The Books of Lairs" format adventures--requiring little or no preparation--is great to have for creating an adventure on the fly. The adventures in AC10 run the gamut of types from the deadly serious to whimsical, so there is something for everyone. (Checkout "The Pestiferous Castle of Bodor Sordstone" adventure. PCs will have to fight giant rabbits and a giant canary with 70 hp named "Twitty Pie.") However, this product is markedly inferior and under developed compared to the AD&D "Book of Lairs."
Bad Accessory Bad Adventures.......2000-07-08
Maybe a third of the adventures are alright, most of the rest are ridiculous. I don't think the book gives any REAL insight into dragons or giants. If you are in the mood for some silly short adventures then you might be alright with this product, but otherwise you'll hate it.
Adds depth to the classic monsters of the game.......2000-04-30
Here it is... one of the rarest books in the AC series, complete and intact! This in-demand sourcebook features wonderful mini-adventures for all of the classic dragons (Black, Gold, Green, Opal, Red, Ruby, and White) and the most famous giant clans (Cloud, Fire, Frost, Hill / Mountain, Stone, and Storm). Each encounter is well-thought out, creative, and challenging; but what's more, each one also offers *exclusive* lore on the featured creature! You'll only find it here. The inside folder is a beautiful illustrated relative size chart of all the species - a classic.
Book Description
This book provides the most comprehensive treatment to date of microeconometrics, the analysis of individual-level data on the economic behavior of individuals or firms using regression methods for cross section and panel data. The book is oriented to the practitioner. A basic understanding of the linear regression model with matrix algebra is assumed. The text can be used for a microeconometrics course, typically a second-year economics PhD course; for data-oriented applied microeconometrics field courses; and as a reference work for graduate students and applied researchers who wish to fill in gaps in their toolkit. Distinguishing features of the book include emphasis on nonlinear models and robust inference, simulation-based estimation, and problems of complex survey data. The book makes frequent use of numerical examples based on generated data to illustrate the key models and methods. More substantially, it systematically integrates into the text empirical illustrations based on seven large and exceptionally rich data sets.
Customer Reviews:
Microeconometrics.......2007-03-24
The book is useful for current line of microeconometric research. However, its presentation is similar to Greene (Econometrics Analysis). So if you are not comfortable with Green this text will not be best for you.
An A-Z reference.......2007-01-11
If you want a book for microeconometrics such than whenever you need to look at a topic or subjects related to a topic, this is your book. If you need a very deep and comprehensive discussion about a topic, you need more than this. It may be not sufficient, but for sure it is a necessary book for anyone who does applied econometrics. I enjoy reading this book.
Great Book.......2006-11-10
The book pretty much covers everything (at more than a basic level) that econometricians would ideally like to know. I think covering so much material in a single book makes it ideal!!
Great Book, Some Errors.......2006-06-25
I was a graduate student enrolled in another reviewer's Econometrics class, and the course was designed largely around this text. I highly recommend it for applied microeconomic topics. Microeconometrics is more current and more comprehensive than any other Econometrics text out there. However, it is definitely a first edition. There are typos and errors throughout.
The book was published in 2005, and it discusses articles published as late as 2004. This is the only text I know of to react to the 2004 Bertrand, Duflo, and Mullainathan article about understated standard errors in DD models.
The volume of econometric techniques presented in detail is immense. See for yourself; "Search Inside," and browse the contents pages for this book, the Greene text, and the Wooldridge text.
Microeconometrics does at times read like a "cookbook," with appropriate assumptions and derivations interlaced throughout. It favors intuition and rules over rigor. This bothered some of the theory fans in class, who probably would have preferred the Greene or Wooldridge texts.
If you buy this book, definitely keep up with the "Corrections and Additions" posted on the author's website. There are a lot of typos, especially in the later chapters' exercises and problems. Near the end of our course, our problem sets started coming from the Wooldridge text (also a first edition, yet more carefully edited).
Microeconometrics works best in tandem with either of the Greene or Wooldridge texts, but if I were to recommend one over the others, I would direct you to Microeconometrics. If you have a "How do I deal with ..." type of econometric question, you're most likely to find the answer in this book.
Fantastic Book for Empirical Economists.......2006-02-10
I am using this text to teach a first-year graduate course in econometrics (following a mathematical stats course) at the University of Florida. Myself and my students have been very happy with the intuitive approach of the book, and I have personally appreciated the good end-of-chapter problems that I can assign to my students. This is a GREAT addition to my library and should be on the shelf of any grad student who works with data.
