Book Description
Into the Sound Country is a story of rediscoveryof two North Carolinians returning to seek their roots in the state's eastern provinces. It is an affectionate, impressionistic, and personal portrait of the coastal plain by two natives of the region, writer Bland Simpson and photographer Ann Cary Simpson.
Here Bland Simpson tours his old waterfront haunts in Elizabeth City, explores scuppernong vineyards from Hertford to Southport, tramps through Pasquotank swamps and Croatan pine savannas, and visits Roanoke River oyster bars and Core Banks fishing shanties. Ann Simpson's original photographs capture both the broad vistas of the sounds and rivers and the quieter corners of mossy creeks and country churchyards. Her selection of archival illustrations ranges from the informative to the humorous, from a turpentine scraper at work in the 1850s to a pair of little girls playing with a horseshoe crab on a Beaufort porch at the turn of the century.
A memorable journey into eastern Carolina's richly varied natural world, Into the Sound Country is for anyone who would spend a while in one of America's most intriguing and underexplored areas.
Customer Reviews:
Stopping to smell the roses when you thought it was a swamp........1998-07-18
I received Bland Simpson's "Into the Sound Country" as a gift. I've had it by the bed for my night reading. It's an unlikely book for me to read -- no plot, no tight narrative, no famous folks or... well, it's different.
You walk into it rather slowly. I kept thinking of John Parker quoting White's description of Roanoke Island (site of the "Lost Colony") as "the goodliest land under the cope of heaven."
"I got no respect for a man with judgment like that," Parker said.
Simpson takes on this swamp filled, brackish, mosquito plagued, twisted tree, run-down and Godforsaken part of the world (except for the beaches) that he and his ancestors grew up in, and Suffering Cats! You can't put the book down. You want to go there. Hell, you want to LIVE there. Remarkable.
I read until I couldn't keep awake last night and then for some reason -- perhaps my wife being away baby sitting in Charlottesville -- I woke up this morning a bit! before five and finished the book. Hated for it to end. That kind of book.
Simpson teaches Creative Writing at Chapel Hill. His long ago past was at one time my present, the forties and fifties on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It's a funny book to recommend. Who the hell has time for a book that is so... leisurely. And such good company. I read passages to Jutta. Long passages. That kind of book.
Very quietly in a sort of sneaky way, you get a picture of this guy and his family. Not a bad life. Not bad at all. You'll be glad you got to know him and them. His wife takes pictures. Good ones. You'll like her too.

If you're planning on making a millennium pilgrimage to Rome, you'll need the holy scoop--a guide specializing in the Christian monuments, tombs, martyrs, saints, catacombs, mausoleums, monasteries, churches, and basilicas, plus Rome's origins, its popes, and the Vatican. Fodor's Holy Rome explains everything you'll need to know about the origins and history of the Jubilee. It contains a chronology of Roman Jubilees (from the first in 1300, through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and up to the Jubilee of Reconstruction in 1950 and the Jubilee on Television in 1975). The Christian Jubilee of Rome 2000, however, will be a bash such as has not been seen in a long time, and there's a full chapter devoted to it, with Main Jubilee Destinations--listed by basilicas, catacombs, way stations, and churches, and then plotted on a map of Rome--followed by a calendar of the Holy Year 2000, with events starting in December 1999 and running through January 2001. The text is instructive and engaging. The pictures are beautiful. The Rome Atlas in back (all 16 pages of it) is unbeatable. And the focused, thorough, well-organized information is irreplaceable. --Stephanie Gold
Book Description
Holy Rome
A Millennium Guide to the Christian Sights
Years of massive renovations have prepared Rome for the 26th Jubilee and the start of the third millenium. Today the city gleams more brilliantly than ever, displaying a fresh, bright face that conjures up the city of centuries gone by, when popes, cardinals, and powerful families were adding magnificent new works of art and architecture to the city's treasure of antiquity and its early Christian relics. Like no other guidebook before, FODOR'S HOLY ROME explores every aspect of the stunning legacy of Christendom -- and brings you close to the powerful soul of the city that has
drawn travelers and pilgrims since the dawn of the first millennium.
No other guidebook highlights so many sights important to Christianity. Nearly 500 are covered in all, from the Vatican museums to the many churches, cloisters, shrines, and relics of saints. Covering them all, district by district, this one-of-a-kind guidebook gives you all the tools to explore.
Clear overviews and complete descriptions help you understand what you see. You'll find moving anecdotes from the lives of the saints, tales of Jubilees through the centuries, biographical sketches of key artists working in Rome, inside stories about recent renovations, and thorough background information on every sight.
An exceptional city atlas from Italy's premier cartographers keep you on track. It's more up-to-date and more detailed than in any other guide, and all the churches and holy sights described in the texts are keyed to the maps.
Exclusive themed itineraries highlight key facets of the city. You'll walk in the footsteps of Peter and Paul, take in Christmas in Rome, and see subterranean Rome, angels and altars, relics and reliquaries, and outdoor shrines and pilgrimage routes.
Calenders from the Vatican and the Rome Agency for Jubilee Preparations give you dates and key information on masses, celebrations, exhibitions, concerts and other Jubilee events.
A wonderful souvenir as well as an essential companion. More than 230 gorgeous photographs depict Rome's landmarks fresh from their face-lift -- and document Rome as it looks today.
Customer Reviews:
I have almost every Rome book published!.......2004-10-04
This one is a comprehensive guide of churches and holy sites throughout Rome. If you've never been,it's hard to imagine how many (400+) churches there are! Each one is a treasure, but most books only list a fraction of them. This is a great book to use while discovering Rome neighborhood by neighborhood. If you're traveling light, take Frommer's Rome and this book and you'll be in great shape.
Fodor's Holy Rome.......2000-10-26
I used this wonderful book while in Rome. It has detailed maps and information that the guide didn't always tell us. Great to study beforehand, take with you, and as a souvenir of your trip. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
I am a good guy.
Keir Sarafian may not know much, but he knows himself. And the one thing he knows about himself is that he is a good guy. A guy who's a devoted son and brother, a loyal friend, and a reliable teammate. And maybe most important of all, a guy who understands that when a girl says no, she means it. But that is not what Gigi Boudakian, childhood friend and Keir's lifelong love, says he is. What Gigi says he is seems impossible to Keir....It is something inexcusable -- the worst thing he can imagine, the very opposite of everything he wants to be.
As Keir recalls the events leading up to his fateful night with Gigi, he realizes that the way things look are definitely not the way they really are -- and that it may be all too easy for a good guy to do something terribly wrong.
Chris Lynch has written a no-holds-barred story about truth, lies, and responsibility -- a story that every good guy needs to hear.
Customer Reviews:
You'll Be Anti- Protagonist.......2007-10-19
A difficult book to fairly assess, INEXCUSABLE repels the reader due to the protagonist, Keir Sarafian, a high school senior who is about as lovable as a housefly. So, the reader asks, am I reacting to the fact that I cannot abide this kid, or am I thinking this book is repetitive, unbelievable, and overambitious, trying too hard to hit that moving target we know as "the randy and clueless jerk known as suburban boy with a drinking problem"? Good question.
I feel that Lynch gets A for effort. And, as a companion to the opposite (female-perspective) rape book, SPEAK, it'd make for great discussion. Still, the book would have been better served by more ambiguity causing more ambivalence on the reader's part. As it stands, Keir's drinking, his sad-sack dad, his stay-at-arm's-length sisters Mary and Fran, and his beleaguered "girlfriend" Gigi are all incapable of inspiring any sympathy for Keir. To work, the book would have to split the reader between liking and disliking this kid. Here, the split is 100 dislike, 0 like -- a ratio for disaster.
classic denial.......2007-07-07
A strong story that I couldn't put down. Brilliantly planned and executed, the author starts out at the end of the story, then brings us back to it through first person narrative in journal-style. Through this, the truth slowly unfolds, even though it's colored by the main character's denials.
The main character, Keir, has a strong voice that keeps the story interesting and the pages turning. I was intrigued at how Keir had done everything he considered inexcusable, denied it to himself and his loved ones, yet still made me care about what was going to happen to him. Excellent story.
Quick page turner.......2007-07-06
This book is a quick page turner and is, most importantly, easy to relate to. Should be a must read for many teens. It has an important story line but avoids being boring, drab. It absolutely tells its own story in a VERY original way.
Joe Leonard The Champ.......2007-06-01
The book Inexcusable by Chris Lynch was a very interesting book .For me, being a senior in high school it's easy to relate to a novel like this. Although pretty much anyone in high school or a graduate would enjoy the book .Once you start the novel its really hard not to finish. At the end of every chapter I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.
The story is about a high school senior who has been recognized as being respectful and achieving good grades. This all goes down hill once the end of his high school life approaches and more important decisions have to be made. The novel gives you a real aspect of what happens in high school and the problems one must face. It hits all the major focuses in a student's life. Grades, girls, drugs, sex, popularity, peer pressure, partying, family life, and more girls.
The only down side to the book was the flip flopping of different scenes. At some points of the book it's easy to get lost in what happens. It doesn't take away from the quality of the story though.
I recommend this book if you have some free time and enjoy reading. All high school students should read the book. It teaches you more about people and even yourself.
Ehhhh..........2007-05-30
While I'm all for the fall of the jock, buckling under his own stupidity, this is a little outrageous. What Lynch describes, but never states, is an extremely unbalanced young man, with some sort of personality disorder and a huge case of denial. This makes him hard to relate to, while making his thoughts garbled. The plot appeared to be alluring, but the style with which is was written is just revolting. The switching between present and past tenses is confusing, not poetic. Character relationships are obscure at times. I found the entire "that wasn't me" attitude a little hard to take after the first few incidents.
Save the money, or buy a book more worthwhile than this one.

Book Description
Girls' education, indisputably crucial to development, has received a lot of attention--but surprisingly little hardheaded analysis to inform practical policy solutions. In Inexcusable Absence, Maureen Lewis and Marlaine Lockheed propose new strategies for reaching the 70 percent of out-of-school girls who are "doubly disadvantaged" by their ethnicity, language, or other factors. The book will be an important tool for policymakers, informing interventions that can make a profound impact on the lives of the 60 million out-of-school girls.

Book Description
Inexcusable Omissions explores the work of Clarence Karier and his impact on critical scholarship in the history of U.S. education. Twenty authors contribute essays that examine Karier's influence on the study of a wide range of issues central to the field, articulate the theoretical approaches that have guided Karier's inquiry, and engage the reader in biographical reflection. The essays converge on the complexities of new liberal social and educational theory and the impact that these ideas have had on the development of the American public school system. This is the landscape of the humanity and legacy of Clarence Karier as a historian of democracy's conscience and one of its most committed educators.

This book provides a general introduction to applied analysis; vector analysis with physical motivation, calculus of variation, Fourier analysis, eigenfunction expansion, distribution, and so forth, including a catalogue of mathematical theories, such as basic analysis, topological spaces, complex function theory, real analysis, and abstract analysis. This book also gives fundamental ideas of applied mathematics to discuss recent developments in nonlinear science, such as mathematical modeling of reinforced random motion of particles, semi-conductor device equation in applied physics, and chemotaxis in biology. Several tools in linear PDE theory, such as fundamental solutions, Perron's method, layer potentials, iteration scheme, are described, as well as systematic descriptions on the recent study of blowup of the solution.

Book Description
This book provides a variety of methods required for the analysis and solution of equations which arise in the modeling of phenomena from the natural and engineering sciences. It can be used productively by both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as others who need to learn and understand these techniques. A detailed discussion is also presented for several topics that are usually not included in standard textbooks at this level: qualitative methods for differential equations, dimensionalization and scaling, elements of asymptotics, difference equations, and various perturbation methods. Each chapter contains a large number of worked examples and provides references to the appropriate literature.

Book Description
This book describes the application of statistics, economics and mathematical modeling to the control of bird and mammal pests. It is about how scientists have analyzed whether vertebrates are pests and what is achieved by control. The book distinguishes itself from other books on the topic by emphasizing the science behind vertebrate pest control rather than methods of control. Dr. Hone critically reviews the literature on topics such as damage assessment and control evaluation and makes links to ecology, epidemiology, fisheries management and economics. The text includes case studies of many mammalian and avian pests in a worldwide scope.

Book Description
With the use of ecological models, managers and decision makers can make sure that the ecological systems affected by their decisions are accurately represented. Unfortunately, the most relevant ecological science and modeling techniques are often not used because managers are not familiar with them or find them inappropriate for their circumstances. The authors of this volume hope to close the gap between the state of the art in ecological modeling and the state of the practice in the use of models as decision-making tools. It will serve as a readable introduction to modeling for people involved in resource management and will also review specific applications of interest to more experienced modelers. The first chapters detail several successful uses of ecological models in resource management. There are then five pairs of chapters addressing important issues in ecological modeling, including barriers to the use of modeling in decision making, evolving approaches in the field, effective use of data, the toolkit approach to management, and the various scientific and technological investments required for productive modeling. Ecologists and other scientists will learn how best to focus their research for practical, real-world applications, and resource managers and other practitioners will learn the most appropriate methods of understanding dynamic processes and making projections about the implications of their decisions.

Book Description
Boundary element methods are very important for solving boundary value problems in PDEs. Many boundary value problems of partial differential equations can be reduced into boundary integral equations by the natural boundary reduction. In this book the natural boundary integral method, suggested and developed by Feng and Yu, is introduced systematically. It is quite different from popular boundary element methods and has many distinctive advantages. The variational principle is conserved after the natural boundary reduction, and some useful properties are also preserved faithfully. Moreover, it can be applied directly and naturally in the coupling method and the domain decomposition method of finite and boundary elements. Most of the material in this book has only appeared in the author's previous papers. Compared with its Chinese edition (Science Press, Beijing, 1993), many new research results such as the domain decomposition methods based on the natural boundary reduction are added.

SCREW KIRKUS.......2006-10-25
A great collection of Kerouac's buddhist (and some catholic) writings. This is not an academic book on Buddhism. Those new to Kerouac should start with "On the Road", "Lonesome Traveler", "Dharma Bums" or the brief "Tristessa".
A true Arhat is a Tao Hobo.......2004-11-08
Wow! I am soooo glad that this book was finally published- and that it was executed so well! This is more than perhaps the all time best example of personal spiritual exploration by a major writer- it is a storage battery of spiritual energy. I've never seen a work this dense with meaning- both in terms of what is in the lines, between the lines, and in mystic juxtaposition between the two. It is a shame that probably not one American in thousand will "get" it- and even fewer outside the culture.
It is obvious to me that Jack understood the Dharma. He also had the concept of Tao intuitively nailed. I just can't understand why he said that he wasn't a Mahayana Buddhist- a person with his great heart and soul was hardly "cold enlightened." It also hit me for the first time that "beat" means "extinguished" in the sense of approaching Nirvana.
I had thought that I had read everything that Kerouac had published (except for that first straight-jacket of a Wolfe-clone novel) but this is perhaps the best of all. Think of it as _The Scripture of the Golden Eternity_ raised to the third power. Every time I pick this book up I find something new. It is no doubt going to occupy me for years and years to come.
THE BEST of Kerouac's work.......2004-06-09
He did not realize these notebooks would be published, so this is Kerouac at his very core. I have been an avid, hungry devotee of Kerouac's work not since reading On the Road, but since getting my hands of a copy of THIS BOOK. Some of the Dharma is the most inspirational book I own - dare I say even more inspiring than my Bible - his random poems about everything ranging from vulgar liquids all conjoined in your earthly body, to the serious issue of the Boddhisatva... Every writer, reader, English teacher, English learner should all read at least parts of this book at some point in their lives.
Metaphysical Poet.......2003-01-13
What is so unusual and valuable about this book is that it represents a prolonged experiment in inventing fresh ways to express metaphysical ideas in English prose and poetry. Most philosophers are poor prose stylists and most prose stylists steer clear of weighty metaphysics. But in this book we find a passionate, inventive prose stylist deeply engaged with pondering such topics as the One and the Many, substance and the composite nature of objects, time and space, the relation of thought and perception to reality, the nature of desire and happiness, mortality and immortality. He approaches these topics through a starting point in Buddhism but going wherever his mind takes him. The book contains many gems of expression as Kerouac pours his ponderings into his strange, striking prose. To criticize this book because Kerouac's scholarship is weak is to miss its point.
Changeless Time.......2001-08-03
Glad to see kind folk jump in to defend a true literary master. One who is more commonly dismissed by the American scholastic establishment than overrated by it. Point blank-do a worldwide deity count and start at the beginning of human existence. Now divide that number by the ones who had a full grown beard, then by the ones who were left handed, and then by the ones who were lactose intolerant, and then ... ... with whatever flag, or president, or hockey player you just know is going to take the home team all the way this year. People, anyone that tells you that Christ & Buddha couldn’t have been similar better be one old son of a gun. If they read their Socrates they would know that the only thing we know about Christ is what got through the King James filter and ditto for Buddha and the innumerable self-serving(yuppie in the U.S.) translations of his teachings. Kerouac is great and should be cherished because of his amazing grasp on such material. It is this obvious understanding he has that makes him more guilty than most of us. Kerouac’s hypocrisy(or any other fault or sin) is more defined to the reader simply because the man understands where God stops & man starts within the confines of these doctrines. But I guess something like that would be too hard to understand if you think that general American academic establishment ...like T.S. Eliot is end of all literature.
