    Book Description

In ¿JERRI, A Black Woman¿s Life In the Media,¿ Jerri Lange has written a personal, candid revelation of the situation of a black woman in the early days of media. She reminds us of a time when sheroes like Ms. Lange challenged powerful institutions, no matter the consequences. Armed with her father¿s admonition to not allow anyone to interfere with her dreams, author Jerri Lange set out on a life¿s journey that would take her to the pinnacle of San Francisco¿s media and political power. A single mother, Ms. Lange accomplished this while raising three distinguished sons, including Michael, a director, producer and Malcolm X delineator, and Ted, a regular on the television series ¿Love Boat.¿ Ms. Lange¿s journalistic career began at the San Francisco Chronicle, where she worked along side such luminaries as Art Hoppe, Charles McCabe and Count Marco, and her mentor, Scott Newhall. She continued with tours at stations KEMO, KBHK, KGO and KQED Television. The dream ended when Ms. Lange delivered her famous speech, ¿Blacks In Broadcasting,¿ in which she criticized the negative images of blacks in the media. After this speech she found the industry that had formerly welcomed her as the token pioneering African-American newswoman and television host, began to give her the cold shoulder. She was eventually, in her words, `black balled.¿ But if some members of the segregated San Francisco media thought that they had defeated Jerri Lange, they underestimated the resiliency of Laura and Turner Wilson¿s daughter. Ms. Lange began to tour the world, which provided her with the opportunity to draw revealing portraits of a dictator¿s wife, Arnold Toynbee, and others. Along the way she was feted by members of the British aristocracy and was an invited guest to a king¿s wedding. Ms. Lange also gives the reader revealing portraits of Malcolm X, Shirley MacLaine, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Daisaku Ikeda. She continued her career at KHET, a public television station in Hawaii. With African American faces disappearing from television news rooms, and the media establishment having abandoned their goal of diversifying the industry by the year two thousand, a challenge made by the late Robert Maynard, Ms. Lange¿s effort as a pioneer African-American news woman is especially timely.

I love this book so much! I would read it again and again. I can relate to this and the characters are so unique and amazing. Sarah Dessen is my new favorite author. I love this book and highly suggest it.

            3 out of 5 stars Diner Life.......2007-07-01

Colie's mother is a fitness guru, a once fat woman who took off a pile of weight and started a fitness empire based on tapes and food programs. This summer when Colie is fifteen, her mother is off to do a tour of Europe to promote her products. That means that Colie is going to spend the summer with her Aunt Mira in a small town in North Carolina. Colie isn't thrilled about going to stay with an aunt she doesn't know, but she isn't very interested in staying at home, either, where everyone her age who once teased her about being fat before she went on her mother's routine now harasses her about sleeping around, even though she doesn't.

When she arrives at her aunt's place, Colie tries to keep to herself, but finds herself drawn in by Isabel and Morgan, the two older girls next door who work at a diner down the street. Colie is also intrigued by Norman, a teenager and artist who rents a room at her aunt's house. Soon Colie is working at the diner wtih Isabel, Morgan, and Norman, learning about life, survival, and how to be happy with who she is.

I liked the character interactions, and found Isabel, Morgan, and Norman all very appealing. I also liked the eccentricities of Aunt Mira and the way she didn't apologize for who she was. However, this book was predictable. From the first time Colie met Norman I could see where the story was going.

            Keeping the Moon
            By Sarah Dessen

Keeping the Moon or Losing Your Soul

Have you ever felt out of place because of your culture, clothing style, or simply just your backround? In the Novel, Keeping the Moon y Sarah Dessen, Colie did not fit in her school, because she was fat. Sometimes, the first instinct to not fitting in is so make yourself blend in better, but that was not Colie's case... until her mom became a fitness instructor and forced Colie to become in shape,
Dessen creates such surreal and relatable scenes, that the book seems to fly by before you know it. Each page consists of drama, which keeps the reader on its feet at all times. The plot tells about Colie's life-changing summer, and how her personality is shaped by other main characters in the book, such as Norman, Morgan, and Isabel. At the beginning, they were on list of Colie's bad side, but throughout the booktheey have a lot in common. Colie realizes, sometimes, you need to change, not to please others, but mainly to please yourself.
The author uses first person narrative, which really gives the reader the true personality of Colie, not from another person's point of view. It also shows Colie's improvement in her attitude towards new things.
Reading this book, gives you not only an amazing take on real-life drama, but also shows you a point of view of someone originally did not fit in, but by the end of two months is very social. If you have read the quick read, This Lullaby, also by Sarah Dessen, and enjoyed it, you are very likely to find this book to be fantastic. You will not believe Colie's transformation that occurs between page 1 and page 228.

4 out of 5 stars Friendships and Friends.......2007-04-19

One girl struggles at making friends. Colie is this one girl; she has no friends until her mom sends her to her fat aunt Mari. Then she starts a new beginning.

Colie's mom is a fitness woman on TV. Colie does not really fit in where she used to live, but for the summer she is not where she normally lives. Morgan, Norman, and Isabelle all work together in a dining facility. Norman lives next door from Mari. Colie is gaining friendship between all these people. This novel has friendship, passion, drama, and plenty more.

This novel grabbed me and pulled me in. Friends are the key to life; this is what the novel has shown me. It will change your prospective of a friend and friendship.

4 out of 5 stars Someone Like You is Fantastico!.......2007-06-13

Being 16 and pregnant would be quit the roadblock in a young girls life. Without a good friend it would be hard to handle on your own. That's what this book is all about! That's the plot and the message of this book.

In this book Halley and Scarlett are best friends. Scarlett ends up getting pregnant wither boyfriend, Michael Sherwood. To put the icing on the cake, Michael dies in a horrible motorcycling accident, leaving Scarlett alone to defend for her self. But Halley never leaves Scarlett's side. They have their ups and downs but they stick together throughout the whole book; dealing with death, boys for Halley, high school and life.

My favorite part of the book is when Sarah Dessen goes in-depth on Halley and Macon's (Halley's boyfriend) relationship. Even though they did some things, they were fun and interesting to read about. Her description showed real life emotions and feelings of teenagers. There was romance, love, fighting, and relationships.

The message of this book is, you can't live without friends. Without friends, life sucks. Friends make life fun, interesting, and they make life easier. So be nice to people and make friends. Maybe you will get lucky enough to find a best friend. Also to wait to have kids till after you get done with high school. I really enjoyed this book. I would rate this book like a 4, 5 being the best and 1 being the worst. This book is romantic; it has drama, love, friendship, and high school. I didn't really find anything that I would change about this book. I would suggest anyone who loves a good chick flick kind of book; you should read, Someone Like You.

5 out of 5 stars Two of Dessen's best in one big book.......2003-10-21

Both of these stories about teenaged girls, Halley & Scarlett in "Someone like you" and Colie in "Keeping the moon" held me captive. Sarah Dessenýs writing is refreshingly honest, and she is a highly respected writer for the genre. Iýve never seen a bad review of her writing. I identified so well with all of these characters on some level. I was never pregnant, but one of my best friends was. These books suck you right in.

I highly recommend you buying this! I am glad I did.

...It is about a girl named Halley who is just dropped off at a camp called Sister Hood camp, she begins to change, when her best friend Scarlett calls her late at night, saying her boyfriend Michal the most popluar boy in her high school, has been killed on his brand new motercycle, later in "Someone Like You" We find out about Scarlett being pregnet with Michal's child. We find out about how she goes though it with Halley's help! Meanwhile Halley is finding herself with her first love a boy named Macon who was Michal's best friend, she faces diffacuilt desions thourgh out there relationship. It is a fablous book, it really taught me about myself! Meanwhile "Keeping the Moon" is complatly opposite and is still a great story! It is about a girl named Colie who has always been teased about her weight, same as her mother, they where always traveling, intil one day her mother meets a health club owner, she helps her mom find a job as a fitness women and Colie and her lose a lot of pounds, but meanwhile the jet-black died hair and the lip ring makes Colie different when she has to stay with her crazy Aunt, for the summer. She meets friends that will change her and makes her more confident about herself and her weight, she even falls for someone! These books were faboulos and great!I loved them both! Read them!

This two books were the best books I have ever read! The author Sarah Dessen, is a great writer. She truly brings life to any character that she writes about. This two stories are about incrediable heroines that will make you want to read more of her work. They are about to girls facing there problems and are willing to overcome them. Each different they make both stories excellent!!! "Someone like You" is about a girl named Halley who has always been close to her mother but when dropped off at camp things change when her best friend Scarlett calls saying her boyfriend died and later in the story she friends out that Scarlett is pregnet. While Halley is soon falling for someone herself and that realationship with a boy name Macon. It truely taught me about myself. "Keeping the moon" is about a girl named Nicole, called Colie, her mother and her used to be extremly over-weight intil her Mom becomes a famous fitness instructer, appearing on T.V. and more she is send to live with her Aunt, crazy as she is for the summer, while her Mom promotes things in Europe. It was a great book also. These are fantastic books!!!!! I reccomend it to any 13 and up girl! One who is mature!

                        Book Description

Hydrothermal ecosystems can be expected to have existed on Earth since life arose. A hyperthermophilic lifestyle has been proposed for the common ancestor of life and submarine hydrothermal vents are a candidate site for the origin of life. An origin of life at high temperatures appears most probable, although an alternative hypothesis has hyperthermophiles as the only survivors of bolide impacts during the last stages of planetary accretion. Our interest in these ecosystems stems in part from research to develop strategies for the search for fossil life on Mars. This may well be our best opportunity in the near future to test whether life on Earth is a `unique experiment, or whether there is, or was, life elsewhere in the Solar System (and by extension, the Universe). In search for analogous fossil systems on Earth it is unfortunate that the palaeobiology of ancient hydrothermal ecosystems is almost completely unknown. This is because of lack of research on this topic, not absence of deposits on which to work. As a result of mineral exploration, many fossil subaqueous and subaerial spring systems are known: numerous gold and base metal deposits of all ages back to Archaean are in such `exhalative, `epithermal and `Kuroko-style systems. This book focuses attention on the history of high temperature ecosystems, bringing together biologists working on extant systems, especially from the point of view of microbiology and molecular phylogeny, with palaeobiologists working on ancient examples or who are familiar with microbial palaeobiology, geologists who know how to find such systems and who know what their tectonic, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics are, and planetary geologists who have a chance of finding such systems elsewhere.

                        5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview........2001-05-01

Explains the importance of hydrothermal systems with respect to the origins of life, and then explores the possibility of similar systems being present on Mars, as well as practical issues about detecting them.

Review-type papers on relevant topics are written by leading scientists in the field, including: hydrothermal systems as sites for emerging life (E.L. Shock), water on Mars (M. Carr), and evidence for hydrothermal systems on Mars (J. Farmer).

The papers were presented as part of a conference, and the book also includes transcripts of discussions between the authors/attendees. There are short question-and-answer sections following each paper, as well as several longer discussion sessions on specific topics. I found that to be a unique approach, and very interesting.

I have used this book as a reference many times -- but then, I do research on this subject!

2 out of 5 stars Good for more practice but some irritating flaws.......2000-05-25

I've used many Schaum's books before, and most of them were very good because they were well written and explained concepts and techniques clearly. "Beginning Linear Algebra," however, was not as good as most of the other books in the series. It suffers from long chapter outlines, poor explanations, and many errors both in the explanations and answers to problems. Nevertheless, this book does provide a lot of good practice problems with answers. So I would recommend this book as a supplement to a regular text and not as a primary source of information about linear algebra.

I am a first year graduate student in physics. I found this book extremely useful. It is very easy to read, easy to understand, and very concise. The material is presented in a logical way and the entire book can be read in a few hours if you are short on time. It is one of my favorite linear algebra books.

                            Book Description

"This is an intermediate level text, with exercises, whose avowed purpose is to provide the science and engineering graduate student with an appropriate modern mathematical (analysis and algebra) background in a succinct, but nontrivial, manner.... [T]he book is quite thorough and can serve as a text, for self-study, or as a reference." —Mathematical Reviews

Written for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in engineering and science, this classic book focuses primarily on set theory, algebra, and analysis. Useful as a course textbook, for self-study, or as a reference, the work is intended to:

                            * provide readers with appropriate mathematical background for graduate study in engineering or science;

                            * allow students in engineering or science to become familiar with a great deal of pertinent mathematics in a rapid and efficient manner without sacrificing rigor;

                            * give readers a unified overview of applicable mathematics, enabling them to choose additional, advanced topical courses in mathematics more intelligently.

Whereas these objectives for writing this book were certainly pertinent over twenty years ago when the work was first published, they are even more compelling now. Today’s graduate students in engineering or science are expected to be more knowledgeable and sophisticated in mathematics than students in the past. Moreover, today’s graduate students in engineering or science are expected to be familiar with a great deal of ancillary material (primarily in the computer science area), acquired in courses that did not even exist a couple of decades ago.

The book is divided into three parts: set theory (Chapter 1), algebra (Chapters 2–4), and analysis (Chapters 5–7). The first two chapters deal with the fundamental concepts of sets, functions, relations and equivalence relations, and algebraic structures. Chapters 3 and 4 cover vector spaces and linear transformations, and finite-dimensional vector spaces and matrices. The last three chapters investigate metric spaces, normed and inner product spaces, and linear operators. Because of its flexible structure, Algebra and Analysis for Engineers and Scientists may be used either in a one- or two-semester course by deleting appropriate sections, taking into account the students’ backgrounds and interests.

A generous number of exercises have been integrated into the text, and a section of references and notes is provided at the end of each chapter. Applications of algebra and analysis having a broad appeal are also featured, including topics dealing with ordinary differential equations, integral equations, applications of the contraction mapping principle, minimization of functionals, an example from optimal control, and estimation of random variables.

Supplementary material for students and instructors is available at http://Michel.Herget.net.

                                        Book Description

Matrix algebra is one of the most important areas of mathematics for data analysis and for statistical theory. The first part of this book presents the relevant aspects of the theory of matrix algebra for applications in statistics. This part begins with the fundamental concepts of vectors and vector spaces, next covers the basic algebraic properties of matrices, then describes the analytic properties of vectors and matrices in the multivariate calculus, and finally discusses operations on matrices in solutions of linear systems and in eigenanalysis. This part is essentially self-contained.

The second part of the book begins with a consideration of various types of matrices encountered in statistics, such as projection matrices and positive definite matrices, and describes the special properties of those matrices. The second part also describes some of the many applications of matrix theory in statistics, including linear models, multivariate analysis, and stochastic processes. The brief coverage in this part illustrates the matrix theory developed in the first part of the book. The first two parts of the book can be used as the text for a course in matrix algebra for statistics students, or as a supplementary text for various courses in linear models or multivariate statistics.

The third part of this book covers numerical linear algebra. It begins with a discussion of the basics of numerical computations, and then describes accurate and efficient algorithms for factoring matrices, solving linear systems of equations, and extracting eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Although the book is not tied to any particular software system, it describes and gives examples of the use of modern computer software for numerical linear algebra. This part is essentially self-contained, although it assumes some ability to program in Fortran or C and/or the ability to use R/S-Plus or Matlab. This part of the book can be used as the text for a course in statistical computing, or as a supplementary text for various courses that emphasize computations.

The book includes a large number of exercises with some solutions provided in an appendix.

Literature and the Environment: A Reader on Nature and Culture has been an invaluable resource and platform for discussion in my high school literature class that centers around the natural world and man's place in it. The essays, poems, and excerpts avoid groupthink, polarization of issues, and are, for the most part, accessible to students.
