Inspiring Idea.......2006-11-06
I shared this book with my third grade class in the beginning of the year. Each double page spread has a child's writing (best self-edited) and a black and white photo. Since the writers were close to their ages, they could model their own writing after the writing in the book. Each child chose their "best part" to write about and then posed for a picture of their hair, feet, etc. I used a digital camera to take black and white photos. The lack of color really emphasized their work. These are now mounted on their lockers for all to see and I have never had as many comments on student writing. This book could inspire writers of many ages.

Great book. What an easy way to get children involved with writing associated with literature. Not only does The Best Part of Me expose children to engaging prose, which they can relate to, it also gets them thinking about what they might say about their own bodies. This is an easy and instant writing project for any classroom, K-12, and the end project creates a terrific bulletin board. The book is worth every cent.

My wife, Marilyn, did a Best Part of Me project with one of the classrooms she consults with. The children who wrote and the shildren and adults who saw the photos and the writing about them were engaged.

I love Either/Or. I really relate to a lot of the philosophy. I've heard the first one is often considered more interesing, but I related more to the second. Probably too long and dense for people who either aren't serious about philosophy, or can't handle reading really long books.

Everything I have read by Kierkegaard, Either/Or, The Seducer, Deep Park or whatever has the same central argument- the relative merits of manipulating the situation as opposed to doing or not doing whatever some inner voice tells him.
Men who get along well with women have a certain knowing of what the woman wants and use this understanding to manipulate her.
Kierkegaard is obsessed with the morality of this, it being less than mutual complete openness. In addition, when one understands a woman intuitively one loses a bit of one's SELF or inner being. This inner being tends naturally toward passivity for those who sense it. The man is "sensitive". An understanding female friend might give him the advice, "She wants YOU to be more mechanical." In Kierkegaard's view going to Deer Park presents the same sort of difficulty. He wants to go, but he does not want to decide to go. The act of decision makes him less sensitive and more mechanistic; therefore the decision to go can produce more inner stress than would a natural leader's decision to enter into a war. Kierkegaard looks for a justification for his indecision and comes to Christianity. But Christianity is "absurd" because it involves "eternal truth occuring in time." To Kierkegaard's mentality a great decision made based upon inner-felt moral grounds is easier than a small decision with no moral significance. In the first case he is empowered by the moral ground that the decision afferms; in the second case the inner self receives no affermation. In this sense morality is a crutch and an order-giver; morality commands as well as empowers; therefore, the individual acts contrary to his own interests and contrary even at times to his own understanding.
To Kierkegaard morality is a part of the inner self, not an external standard or system. Kierkegaard is good to understand, but a bad example to copy.
The first book in Kierkegaard's remarkable Authorship.......2002-08-11
Although Kierkegaard had written other books before this one, mainly some literary critical works as well as his dissertation THE CONCEPT OF IRONY, this is the book that begins what he calls his "Authorship." The works constituting his Authorship have two main things in common: 1) they are all written by Pseudonymous Authors that represent points of view that do not precisely correspond with Kierkegaard's beliefs and 2) they are intent on delineating what Kierkegaard called the three stages of existence: the aesthetic, the ethical, and religious stages.
Of all the great philosophical writers, Kierkegaard was one of the greatest masters of literary form. In each work, he adapts a style and form that is appropriate to the particular point of view he is attempting to illustrate. In EITHER/OR I, he is concerned with showing various aspects of the Aesthetic Stage of Existence. Unlike the later stages of existence, the Aesthetic is extremely diverse, and can take more forms and be expressed in a larger number of shapes. Kierkegaard therefore writes a series of essays that bring out various aspects of the Aesthetic stage. Some of these are among his most famous writings. His essay on Mozart's DON GIOVANNI, "The Immediate Erotic Stages or The Musical-Erotic" ranks among the most famous pieces of musical criticism ever written. Perhaps even more famous is "The Seducer's Diary," in which an individual records his attempts to snare a young woman, though more in the sense of a Mephistopheles than a Don Juan. My favorite section, and the one that illustrates an especially developed form of the aesthetic is "The Rotation of Crops," in which our anonymous author attempts to deal with the one great difficulty facing the Aesthetic Mode of Existence: boredom. As he writes, "Boredom is the root of all evil." Therefore, the challenge to the Aesthetic is to thrust away continually boredom, and in this essay our writer provides a guide to making life as interesting as possible. We are required to continually find new friends, new jobs, new interests, since all obligations lead to tedium. Marriage is, of course, to be avoided, since this is boring (the contrary to this will be asserted in EITHER/OR II). That this task is impossible is taken up in later works by Kierkegaard.
EITHER/OR begins in classic Kierkegaardian fashion. Kierkegaard was probably the greatest master of the Preface in the history of literature. His Prefaces are such masterpieces that they can profitably be read on their own, and he himself delighted in writing them to such a degree that he wrote one book that consisted in nothing but Prefaces. In the one to both volumes of EITHER/OR, a gentleman by the name of Victor Eremita explains how he accidentally discovered the papers filling the two volumes that had been hidden in a desk. He separates them into two groups, "A" and "B". He possesses no great certainty as to the authorship, but believes that one person may have written the first group, and another the second group. Or, alternately, that the author of the "A" papers may have written the "B" papers later in life. The latter is probably what Kierkegaard wants us to believe, for it is his fundamental belief that the Aesthetic mode of existence is doomed to failure, and that it is possible (though not necessary) that this could lead to a higher level of existence, The Ethical. This new stage is dealt with in the second volume of EITHER/OR.

You will have the most fun reading the first book of Either/Or. The book is actually the master fisherman's best hook -much like Socrates was a midwife of thoughts- to bring you out into reflection of the question at hand: Either the esthetic or the ethical life. This book and the second part is this elaborate question concerning two opposing ways of life. This first book is ironically and seductively entertaining. He deals with various subjects like Mozart, Drama, unhappiness, Boredom and finallly the seduction of young girl. If anything else, read the last two portions of the book. One of the things that I like about the way K writes is his ability to use words from other disciplines and to incorporate them into his language so beautifully that reading him is literally an excursion.

Kierkegaard's brilliance lies in his ability to take such deeply personal experiences--love, lust, sorrow--and comment universally in a way that is at least unmatched in philosphy and probably in all of literature. He understands life in a way that seems obvious but is in actual fact merely fundamental to all of us. The book is a collection of papers and texts on a variety of subjects that at first seem disconnected but in the end all tie perfectly together with the truly brilliant "seducer's diary". Philosophy is a literary discipline that generally provokes either intimidation or a feeling of pointlessness (by this I mean that people wonder why should I care what someone else thinks if it is all unprovable anyway). I feel that Kierkegaard represents everything that is good about philosphy and is worth an attempt at least even if one is trepedatious. This book will not overwhelm you in complex language or termanology, rather it will leave you invigorated with fresh ideas and new questions about everything around. Everyone should read this book.

The Rauzer Sicilian, during the mid 1990s, was perhaps only second to the Najdorf. Now the situation has changed. The Najdorf is still supreme. However the opening has lost nothing in complexity, just witness the problems Kramnik is having trying to adopt it. The Sveshnikov Sicilian has surpased the Rauzer in popularity, and is now all the rage. It, too, is very concrete and sharp. The Kan and Taimanov Sicilians remain popular as well. The Dragon has never really caught on (the more it is examnined, the more questionable the 9 0-0-0 line looks). So what happened to the Rauzer? It was very popular among the top players, with Kramnik, Anand, and Shirov playing it often (if one goes back and looks at Tal's games, one finds him playing it quite often in his time as well). I think Kramnik relied on it as his sharpest weapon against 1 e4, in "must win" situations. Well, the defense received a lot of attention, and was thus put under pressure. Kasparov did much to damage various lines. So, the top players moved on to other defenses. leaving the Rauzer battered, but still standing. Personally, I find much to recommend the Classical Sicilian. It is not as deep and subject to constant change as the Najdorf and Sveshnikov. It allows one to play either 2..d6 or Nc6 (Does one want to face the Moscow or Rossilimo?)It allows a very flexible response to various sixth moves by white. Do you want a Boleslavsky set-up? A schevennigen? or a dragon? the choice is yours. Do you want to face the Sozin attack with 6 Bc4 e6? or dodge it with 6..Qb6? All this is very nice, and gives a black player a wonderfully flexible game to work with. The key to the entire idea of playing the Classical Sicilian is the Richter-Rauzer Attack. Can Black find a viable position here in these masses of variations? That is the crux of the matter. Well, as a quick glance at this book will show, there is some saftey in the sheer size and scope of the Rauzer. White needs to cover a vast amount of material. As Black, one need only choose one line. If that proves troublesome, well, then one can try a different line, etc. The problem, in my opinion, is that the whole Rauzer Sicilian is very sharp. There is no "solid" Rauzer. It is all very dicey stuff. And a lot of it has been studied quite deeply. Myself, I have only really scratched the surface of the defense. So I must rely on gut instincts. My instinct tells me that it is playable, and, with some study, one should be able to hold one's own against a decent caliber of opposition. I think with two mid-level opponents, the Rauzer should give Black enough tactical counter-chances. There are some lines here where at Super-GM level it looks as if Black is busted, or groveling for a draw. But I think there is enough scope in the Rauzer to avoid most of these lines and steer into something else. In short, I recommend the Rauzer as a linchpin defense to 1 e4. This book is the best one out there on the subject. One would need to keep checking in New in Chess and Informator in order to keep up with things. In the last Wilk an Zee tournament, I noticed Timman play the Rauzer with black against Anand. Timman was blown away. But it was still an interesting sharp struggle, quite in character of the opening. I think this opening is a good one for tournament play, as it is well conceived for playing for a win. Now what to play against the c3 Sicilian? ahh..the trick there is simply to stay awake...good hunting.

WARNING: This is NOT a teaching book, but for the serious player who already knows how to play this line and wants to really plumb its depths!

If you play the classical Open Sicilian as Black, most likely you will end up in the Rauzer; if you do, this is the guide to have. It is a survey and not a repertoire book, making it particularly suitable for correspondence players. Statistically, the Rauzer and the Najdorf are Black's main weapons against 1.e4; you should probably learn one of them at least.

Since 1980 American players have been waiting for a comprehensive book on the most common Super Grandmaster Opening in chess today. This book is big and covers everything! Common lines to hardly ever seen methods. If you use e4 or play the Sicilian this book is manditory!

Lots of time for little insight.......2006-06-15
I'm seriously wanting to change careers so I bought this book on the strength of the reviews. I also previously flipped through other career books at the bookstore. I realized after completing this book, that these books generally don't provide insightful career guidance that are really tailored to a person's interests/personality/etc.
First are a series of skills tests(e.g., numerical, clerical, spatial, verbal), like an SAT, except they're timed. Then there's a sort of personality test, followed by a motivation test. At the end of each test, the book provides a sample of careers which matches to your results. I noticed a lack of computer-oriented careers in this book which probably reflects it's publication date. Well, the list of careers generated for me was not appealing at ALL.
My overall experience with these books (and researching professional career assessments) has taught me that there are no easy answers in the search for a perfect career.
Bad Tests, Decent Book.......2002-10-28
The questions on the tests were fairly obvious (example: "are you a leader?") A lot of the questions were hard to answer, because you didn't know what context they were in, so they could be either way. I ended up directly in the middle for most of the personality and motivation tests because of this. However, I found the text after the questions to be very helpful, and that's why I'd reccomend this book. You have to look at what they say after the tests to really figure out what type of person you are for different jobs.. that part was really helpful, but the tests werent.

I had been injured at my previous occupation, and was eligible for vocational rehabilitation. My employer and VR were willing to help me, but I had a big decision to make. WHAT KIND OF JOB / CAREER SHOULD I CHOOSE? I hit the bookstores and there are dozens of these kinds of books. However, this one is different. It not only tests your aptitude (like other books do and then stop) but also your personality and your motivation. For me this book made all the difference in the world. In other books, I always scored high in two areas. The titles of these areas might be different in every book, so I will use research and practical. "TEST YOUR OWN JOB APTITUDE" goes one step further and crossed referenced results like this. I researched all the choices and decided on a career in Biomedical Engineering Technology. I completed a two-year degree and now have a job that I LOVE. I love to fix things, I love to help people, and I hate being tied to a desk. This career was tailor made for me. I hope this helps you, I have recommended this book to many others over the last 3 years. Some have even changed their majors because of it. I also recommend that a friend help you answer the personality section. I was depressed when I did it by myself and it threw the results way off. A friend who knew me before the accident "corrected" some of my answers. By the way - I am a 41 year-old female and 20 years ago would never have dreamed I could become an Engineer!!!

I am going against the grain of the other reviews here, but this book was a waste of time for me. I was very disciplined in completing the ability tests, and followed all the advice about the personality and motivation portions. I really tried to approach this will an honest an open mind, otherwise you risk doing yourself an injustice (e.g., it's better to answer how you ARE instead of how you WISH TO BE).
What did I learn? I got a "B" in four different abilities (no A's). You are only supposed to spike in one or two. I have "average" motivation in all seven motivation categories, and I am a "Specialist" or "Free Agent" personality (one of the four personality variables was down the middle).
There are dozens of combinations of skills/aptitude/motivation groups that I could try to analyze in order to conclude something. No thank you. A built-in excuse of any author of this type of book is that "I don't really know myself", but isn't that what this book was designed to solve?
In all fairness, there are some pearls of wisdom in this book and it would probably serve a new grad well. Plus, I like the idea of not just evaluating personality (which is common), but also to add the elements of abilities and motivation. The authors convinced me that these three dimensions are important in harmony with a career.
However, the ability tests were ineffective of finding my strengths. The motivation test didn't identify anything significant. The personality test is interesting, but the various Meyers-Briggs books have much more richness, examples and suggestions than the FLAG analysis. This book is cheap, so you may want take this just for the heck of it. But don't count on it working as well as it does for others. Maybe it will, maybe not!

I thought I was flighty or something because there are so many things that interest me as far as a new career is concerned. After I took the tests, I realized that I scored high in several areas indicating that I have many fields that my talents could fit.
This book is great for people considering starting a new career or for kids going into college. Even if you don't change your career over the results, it is still interesting and advantageous to know where your talents and skills lie.
