Robert Yeats, a retired professor of geosciences at Oregon State University, knows that earthquakes, small or large, aren't news in California. What is news is how badly prepared most Californians are for the eventuality; scientists there have developed the world's most comprehensive program of disaster management, forecasting, and quake-resistant construction codes, Yeats suggests, but ordinary people have done little to improve their odds of survival. This is a great book as an all-around reference for understanding not only the science and theory behind CA earthquakes, but also the hitory and cultural factors that have shaped our response to earthquakes.

Can't Live With 'Em And Can't Live Without 'Em.......2001-05-23

Living With Earthquakes In California by Robert Yeats is an excellent book. I bought the book on the strength of The Geology Of Earthquakes, a textbook Yeats co-authored, but I never expected a book that would rival Bruce Bolt's Earthquakes in my mind. Even though the book is focused on California [Yeats also has one coming out on the Pacific Northwest], it is comprehensive enough to be an all purpose reference on earthquakes. The book covers everything from the science of earthquakes to earthquake insurance. People that find Bolt a little too difficult will find Yeats a little more comprehensible. While the College Board mulls over whether to instate an AP Geology course, I'm already compiling my supplemental reading list for the class and this book will be at the top of the list.

My classes loved this, so did I.........2007-08-08

This was by far the best book my 7th grade reading class read last year. It has everything a 13 year old could want: murder, drugs, racism, betrayal, and even romance. The first three may sound like negatives, but given the context and time period, it was done very tastefully. I don't understand why this book doesn't get more attention, it's my opinion that this is better than "The Outsiders", which is a classic. S.E Hinton outdid herself with this novel, and should be proud of this literary masterpiece. It also contains a number of memorable quotes.

I purchased this book for my grandson to use in his high school English class. I can't really comment on the subject matter of the book, since I have not read it. My grandson said it was good - and he scored a perfect 100 on his test.

That was then this is now was an exceptional book. Anyine who like any of Hinton's previous works (ex. Rumble Fish, The Outsiders) would love this book. The plot about 2 inseperable brothers begining tho grw apart because of drugs. Eventhough the ending was very depressing I would still recomend this book to anyine who liked Hinton's previous works.

when somethings ending something new is beginning .......2007-04-05

I first read That was then, this is now in the sixth grade. It was after i read The Outsiders. And after i fell in love with the outsiders I'd figure i would give this book a try and I'm glad i did. I grew quite fond of this book. It wasn't as sad as the outsiders or as good but it was still satisfying. Then i read S.E Hinton's other novels and i became to know Hintons novels pretty well. I'm also pretty happy that i read her books.

The book that I read was called That Was Then, This is Now, by S.E. Hinton. This is a story about two friends who are real close at a young age, but when they grow up they also grow apart. Marks parents died when he was eight years old. His friend Bryon down the street took him in. Bryon's mom would have had a lot more kids, but she could only afford two. Mark and Bryon were only a year apart. They did everything together, they went movies, lunch, the bowling alley, and even fought side by side in every fight they got into. One day Mark and Bryon's friend M&M told them that his sister came home from boarding school. Bryon likes her and starts to go out. Mark gets jealous and starts to go out on his own. Bryon is worried and doesn't know how Mark is getting all his money from.
My opinion on this book is that it teaches me to always stay close to your friends. I think if something is wrong with them you should ask them what the matter is. I also think if your friend starts to do things that you think are wrong you should either tell someone, tell them to stop, or not hang out with them.
My recommendation on this book is for people who have good relationships with their friends. I say this is because if you don't want to lose your friendship with someone then you can tell them to stop doing things bad. You also can have a talk telling them to stop doing what is wrong and to start doing the right thing. This will keep your friendship going and most importantly keep you and your friends out of trouble.

Good Unit.......2005-08-10

I thought this unit plan was particularly useful because of its flexibility. You can run the whole plan with a class or take relevant parts of it, as the needs of the class dictate. I highly recommend this product.

That Was Then This Is Now.......2002-02-23

That Was Then, This Is Now is a book about two teen-age boys trying to make it on their own without the help of their mother because she is very sick and is hospitalized. There are a lot of drugs and alcohol where they live and they both drink and have taken drugs.
Mark and Bryon were the best of friends. They were as close as brothers...in fact everyone considered them to be brothers. As a child, Mark's parents died and Bryon's mother took him into her family. They did everything together from hustling pool players to getting drunk. No matter what it was, they did it together. Over time Mark and Bryon start drifting farther and farther apart. When Bryon gets into a serious relationship and starts to realize that there is more to life then he thinks. While Mark is going towards the "spur of the moment" decisions. Bryon doesn't have enough time to be with Mark and watch his every move. In result Mark gets into a lot of trouble and Bryon discovers a secret that will force him to chose between what's right and being a friend.
I would rate this book about a four, with five being the highest. I liked it because it teaches everyone what taking drugs, stealing cars and getting fights can do to you. Yet, the thing that I didn't like was that it left you hanging at the end. If there were a sequel, then I think that it would I would have enjoyed this book more.
I would recommend this book to teenage kids trying to figure out what they want to do with their life. This book is a non-forgettable piece. I will remember the lessons that it taught me, for instance, one quote that I really liked and I think that a lot of people should listen to is, "...why make anything of anyone, why not just take them or leave them?"
S.E. Hinton is a great author and writes her books so that people can relate to them. I think that a lot of people can relate to some of the conflicts in That Was Then, This Is Now.

genetics practice problems and solutions ,chinnici & matthes.......2000-09-21

I have found this book to be a tremendous help in improving my grade at college level genetics. I needed some help and practice in problems and this book has provided the data base of questions. The questions are well written and the information is laid out in a manner that is not intimidating. I want to sit and read the questions for fun :o) There is a good combination of multiple choice and short answer questions which drew me to buying the book. I need the practice in short answer response questions. Also, the content is not too symplistic and straight-foward.The major topics in genetics are addressed with many questions requiring varying amounts of information for a response. There is a good measure of thinking that is required to foumulate an A+ answer. It is also very convenient to have the solutions at the end of the section of problems so that I do not have to go searching every time I need an answer.

The Best of Shakespeare in One Book.......2003-06-19

Having a love of literature, and being an English Lit. major has given me the oportunity to read most of Shakespeare's works. Shakespeare's talent and genius has surely endured and his beautiful writings are essential to mankind not only in the classroom but throughout our lives. His tragedies speak the loudest to me, as they are charged with drama, emotion and memorable quotations. Having to choose a favorite book of all time I would say, "Othello." Yet Hamlet is my second favorite drama of Shakespeare's, and Macbeth also holds strong. I do not care for King Lear but having Shakespeare's 4 greatest and most popular tragedies in one book is a collection worth having.

Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth are Shakespeare's greatest works. These fantastic stories, coupled with strong footnotes, make for superb reading material. I would recommend this book to beginning and master Shakespeare readers.
