3 out of 5 stars A helpful guide for experienced mushroomers.......2000-05-23

This field guide covers ascomycetes and basidiomycetes from southern California to the Rocky Mountains, and north to Alaska. Besides the major groups of fungi, there is a good description of how mushrooms grow, a glossary of mycological terms, mycological collections & societies, and instructions on successful collecting.

I own quite a few field guides on mushrooms, and rated this one a 3 because it probably would not appeal to first-time mushroomers. Mushrooms are described according to the latin name, but the common name is not included in the title. There is a list of common names in the back of the book, which is helpful, but would be more so if included in the title. There are not enough drawing and photos to assist amateurs in sure identification. There are several pages of color photos in the center of the book, and many b/w line drawings throughout. A nice feature is a series of keys for different species. You match up the qualities of your specimen and discard those that do not, until the correct name is found.

Although this is not the field guide I would pick up first to identify a mushroom, I have found its thoroughness helpful in narrowing down the possibilities because of the book's detailed descriptions.

                  Book Description

The guy looked at me with a stare that would have frozen antifreeze.

                  "You the new groupie, huh?"

                  "Yeah," I said. "So?"

"So no one wants you here. Why don't you go back where you came from?"

I can't go back, I wanted to say. That was the thing about living in a group home. There was nowhere for me to go but forward.

Brent Hartinger's second novel, a portrait of a subculture of teenagers that many people would like to forget, is as powerful and provocative as his first book, Geography Club.

4 out of 5 stars Insight into Group Homes.......2007-06-09

Brent Hartinger is just plain a good writer. I use Geography Club in an adolescent lit class that I teach at the college level. This is as well written as that one on a different topic. Even though the author tells us his time as a counselor is a group home was brief, this book has the ring of authenticity. There are all kinds of little insights that lets you know this is not someone who read about the topic or interviewed someone on the topic this is someone who lived it. The plot is a little shaky. If two cars were set on fire on the street wouldn't there be a neighborhood watch? Would the hot shot athlete really fall for the troubled girl from the group home? I did keep reading to to find out who the culprit was. The ending seemed idealized, but I think any reader will have gained insight into the group home situation.

                  3 out of 5 stars A book with a minor heartbeat........2006-11-20

This was the 1st Brent book that I acutally cared about the main character. I cared what happened to her - but the things that did happen in this book were very forced and very predictable. That made reading this book difficult - it's not really longer than a short story but took me several sittings to get though. Average.

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-10-24

Brent Hartinger has crafted a touching and suspenseful novel sure to capture and hold any teen reader's attention. He knows his craft well, having created an edgy novel about the foster care system with a tasteful, deft touch, ensuring it a wide readership. He has proven that tough issues and hard situations teens face can be portrayed with minimal violence and profanity.

Like his earlier novel, Geography Club, Hartinger has crafted several sympathetic characters among a microcosm of society's misfits. This novel's group of excluded teens are orphans, kids whose perception of themselves is nearly as negative as their peers at school, who deride them as "groupies" (foster children in group homes). The reader is drawn into their conflicts, both within their own walls, their own psyches, and with society-at-large.

The narrator, Lucy, has been a foster child for over half of her life. Kindle Home is the last, "safe" stop for teens like her, for those who have been in trouble. Children who "wash out" of Kindle Home are then sent to Rabbit Island, a place for teens beyond redemption--in the eyes of the system, at least. As a veteran of group homes, she vows to make an effort to fit in at Kindle, which proves to be difficult. Newcomers are viewed as a challenge of the "pecking order" and it isn't long before Lucy is facing serious challenges from others in the home.

Her school environment presents another challenge when she is caught in a social caste disagreement with two of her peers. In spite of the odds against them, she makes a friend from one of her earlier antagonists, a person who proves to be a crucial ally when Kindle Home faces community persecution and budget cuts. As the new friends try to find out who has been setting fires in the neighborhood in order to frame the members of Kindle Home, Hartinger provides an unexpected twist when he unveils the perpetrator.

With a heart-warming ending, Hartinger proves that edgy young adult fiction can still leave a reader with hope. THE LAST CHANCE TEXACO is suitable even for middle school-aged students. Recommended. Five stars.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2006-07-10

I had to read this book for my summer reading program for school, and at first I was thinking, "This is a book the school picked out, so it isn't going to be that good. I mean they don't know what kind of books us teenagers are into. All they like are them old boring books." Man was I wrong. This was one of the best books I have ever read. I loved it. Lucy is just one of those characters that you just bond with. You also feel sorry for her, because of how so many bad things have happened to her in her life. I highly recommend this book to anyone. It is a great read for all ages. I finished it in less then three days. I just couldn't put it down. Some nights I even stayed up until four o'clock in the morning reading it. So, for anyone out there wanting to read a great book this summer, I recommend this one.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Great First Novel.......2005-10-23

This is a story of pilgrimage, a tale of becoming, a great adventure. John Wade is running away from the darkness, demons, and despair that pursue him relentlessly. At the same time he is running towards something that he doesn't know or understand, yet he is compelled to keep on running towards it.

Pountney has given life to a rich and complex character. The pain of his alienation is palpable, and the wounds that he incurs as he attempts to reach out to others are searing to the reader as well.

The writing is spare, but takes on an edgy immediacy as the author confers on Wade prodigious powers of observation. An example is from what would otherwise be an unremarkable scene in a diner. "She peeled back the silver on a small plastic container of jam. Her knife blade caught the sun and flicked a bright spot on my chest. The sunlight made the jam look like the squishy inside of an open wound. It glistened and made a faint sucking sound."

Or in another instance, Wade is outside of Pittsburgh, watching a woman weed her garden. He describes this as follows: "She spent a whole hour on her knees pulling plants out of the ground and putting them into a black garbage bag. When it was full, she carried it over to the driveway and went into the house for another one. She stretched her back, looked up at the clouds brewing overhead, then crouched down again, clearing the ground under a spruce hedge".

In noting that the woman is pulling plants out of the ground (where else), that the garbage bag into which she is placing them is black, and that the subject hedge is indeed a spruce, Wade evidences his hunger for control, and for a measure of the ordinary in his life.

These are the observations of one skirting the perimeter of a dark and yawning abyss. The reader, who is along for the ride, cannot escape Wade's assessment of the stakes, "This country was harsh and unforgiving. There was no room for error or miscalculation".

1 out of 5 stars Listless "Last Chance Texaco".......2000-12-31

In her first novel, Christine Pountney's coming of age tale about John Wade, a 15 year old boy uprooted from British Columbia to California, falls short in generating enthusiasm about his trials. Pountney seemed a little timid in fleshing out John Wade's personality. The basic mechanisms for the story are there, but the main character lacks an overall charisma. Granted, he is not supposed to be the most intelligent character but he rarely displays any spark to make him appealing.

It reads like a self-conscious journal of a young man afraid and perhaps incapable of fully expressing himself. All this aside, credit must be given to Pountney for giving Wade existence, as bland as his is. His thoughts also seem a little too P.C. and euphemistic for the time frame and his upbringing.

At times, Pountney is most definitely a thoughtful and observant writer, capturing idyllic images of the California coast and snapshots of a cross-country drive through the States. Her next project in the making entails the life of feisty Hanna, the provocative secondary character in "Last Chance Texaco" whose personality should have been fused into Wade's to give this book a chance.

Five stars.

                        Book Description

Although the official compendia define a drug substance by its identity, purity, strength, and quality, they normally do not provide other physical or chemical data, nor do they list methods of synthesis or pathways of physical or biological degradation and metabolism. Such information is scattered throughout the scientific literature and the files of pharmaceutical laboratories.

Edited by the Associate Director of Analytical Research and Development for the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, Analytical Profiles of Drug Substances and Excipients brings this information together in one source. The scope of the series has recently been expanded to include profiles of excipient materials.

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

This text introduces and examines a variety of spectral computational techniques - including k-space theory, Floquet theory and beam propagation - that are used to analyze electromagnetic and optical problems. The book also presents a solution to Maxwell's equations from a set of first order coupled partial differential equations.
