4 out of 5 stars A handy little field guide to the region.......2000-05-16

This early book by Kozloff provides a helpful overview of the nearshore marine life of the Pacific Northwest. It is now quite dated though. It is not, however, as good as his more recent book, "Seashore Life of the Northern Pacific Coast : An Illustrated Guide to Northern California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia" Paperback (November 1983)

I recommend that you seek out the latter book if you are looking for a good field guide to the ecology of marine inverbrate and other nearshore organisms of the Pacific NW.

          5 out of 5 stars Book Description.......1999-12-21

Ferrari's Gay Travel A to Z is an excellent guide to gay businesses, services, and community resources worldwide. The book is quite thorough in its coverage of gay commercial establishements in big cities and smaller towns alike, and it is very useful for locating gay and gay-friendly tour operators. Arranging a trip through a tour operator can make international travel a lot less confusing (and many operators can offer advice on clothing-optional travel opportunities). A to Z is also the best available resource for information about special-interest travel services, which run the gamut from all-gay mountain climbing trips to religious and spiritual events to leather conventions. Additionally, A to Z includes a calender of gay festivals, parties, and other events across the globe. This is one of the most comprehensive worldwide gay travel guides available, and it's an exceptional value.

I always like Ferrari's articles within their book, and have been a happy contributor of them. They add a lot of depth and scope to the areas covered.

Dimple Lala doesn't know what to think. Her parents are from India, and she's spent her whole life resisting their traditions. Then suddenly she gets to high school and everything Indian is trendy. To make matters worse, her parents arrange for her to meet a "suitable boy." Of course it doesn't go well -- until Dimple goes to a club and finds him spinning a magical web . Suddenly the suitable boy is suitable because of his sheer unsuitability. Complications ensue. This is a funny, thoughtful story about finding your heart, finding your culture, and finding your place in America.

            4 out of 5 stars Good story.......2007-06-15

Teenager Dimple Lala is confused about her whole Indian heritage thing, esp. when it touches on her love life. It takes having good and bad times with her popular, all-American best friend to figure out who she truly is and how her heritage and family traditions can be a blessing in disguise after all. This is a fun read touching on some deeper issues. Recommended.

            4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2007-04-11

Born confused pretty much explains my own life. It makes me feel like theres someone out there that knows who I am in some way. It is a book for a bit older people but i find it intreging!

2 out of 5 stars Major pushover and horrid friend ruin story..........2007-02-23

Born Confused follows the life of the culture-confused main character, Dimple Lala.

Now I have to say, I know little about Indian cultures, but it seemed to me that Dimple didn't know so much herself. I do have experience with parents, of course, so her parents' reaction when she came home drunk was entirely unrealistic. My huge complaint is that the author portrays getting drunk and stoned as hilarious. The entire story, Dimple keeps saying how she never does anything wrong, but when her best friend says to drink or smoke marijuana she immediately does so, without question. God forbid if she had been told to do anything worse. Please, do not teach teens that smoking grass is a good thing. Is this author out of her mind???

Then, there was the friend, Gwynn, who was no friend at all. She was probably one of the most selfish characters I have ever come across, ex: taking her friend's clothes without asking, divulging her deepest secrets to a total stranger, who just so happens to be the boy she is after while her friend, Dimple, is sitting right there, she throws her best friend aside as soon as she gets a boyfriend, and when the time comes to apologize, she lays it all on Dimple's shoulders. If I had a friend like her I wouldn't stand that kind of treatment, but Dimple did. Even when she confronted Gwynn, nothing seemed to come of it, in my opinion. Dimple was a major pushover, and the ending, although everything is magically resolved in one year in the story, would not be in real life. Dimple was a kind, sympathetic character. She deserved a better friend and a backbone.
Also, the author sometimes got carried away with descriptions...

At the moment, I'm having trouble remembering any good points. I think I liked it somewhat at the time I was reading it, but that feeling has left me completely.
            Overall: another over-hyped book.

            5 out of 5 stars Born Confused.......2006-09-26

I guess the whole mess started around my first birthday. Amendment: my first birthday... So, I came out the wrong way and have been getting it all wrong ever since. (p.1)

Dimple Lala is confused as always. Torn between her parents and their Indian traditions and the things and people she loves. Her parents are trying to set her up with a "suitable" boy, but Dimple wants nothing to do with anything suitable. One of the boys her parents introduce her to is Karsh. He is the perfect boy, respectful, kind, gentle and very traditional, or at least he is from what they have seen. Suddenly, Dimple and her best friend Gwyn discover Karsh may not be so suitable after all. Is he still the prefect Indian boy Dimples parents think he is or is he the boy Dimple has been dreaming of?
Tanuja Desai Hidier's Born Confused is full of hope, heartbreak, and friendship. As soon as I started reading, I was caught in a wonderful trance. This page turning teen fiction novel keeps you on your feet while being very realistic. The images Tanuja Desai Hadier creates in your mind are colorful and vivid, for example. "I felt I was looking over the edge of the world. And it was a moment when all was right with the world: The music was all around and inside us. Below, a sea of people were grooving in a multiplicitous harmony." Page 405. I really loved that passage because I could see Dimple standing on a balcony looking down at everyone dancing, and being completely happy and content. If you love stories about finding yourself, this is the perfect book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Don't be confused anymore, k?.......2006-07-29

I really enjoyed this book - I read the liner notes for it, and it really was a great, read-it-one-sitting book. Dimple is a very believable character and you can see the reality of the world in the book. I love how they give each person's passions their own real life- like Dimple with her photography, and Karsh with his music. A lot of the description that is used is full of poetry, but without being poetry really at all - but it gives you that fluid feeling - that just really makes this a delightful read.

I disagree on that one review about the way that they did the quotes... Yes, it was a little odd at first, but once you realize that the hyphens represent the dialogue- it wasn't that big of a deal. I actually liked that- because as a writer- I never realized that you could do that in a publication- think so out of the box on what's usually considered a literary rule.

But even that little thing is a testament to the beauty of this book.

It made me want to run out and buy a Sari, and find all the Indian people and ask them who they are, and learn from them.

                  Book Description

This novel is about the "melting pot" phenomenon of America. It tells the stories of American children born to Pakistani parents: the children are a part of the flashy, materialistic and fun new life in America , while the parents hear the persistent calling of the old country. The main characters--all teenagers--get embroiled in an adventure in the grasslands of East Africa, and each character learns an important lesson about self discovery. The characters include Omar, who is obsessed with sports, Baywatch, Puff Daddy and junk food; Sherazad from New York, the quintessential Valley Girl and label-spewing shopaholic; Yasmeen, every God-fearing Pakistani parent's worst nightmare--a Muslim girl modeling Victoria's Secrets underwear; and Narmeen, a girl who has begun to embrace an Afghani Taliban style of militant Islam.

Somewhat enjoyable romp, albeit childish writing style, that passes for light fare. Very quick read. It IS impressive that a teenager wrote this and made it to the market. Don't expect too much commentary about the juxtaposition of two cultures.

5 out of 5 stars Precocious, insightful, witty and highly readable.......1999-06-29

This is a highly worthwhile read for all those who follow literature from or about South Asia as well as those who are intrigued by literature created by the clash and confluence of very different cultures. That it has been written by a seventeen year old high school senior makes it all the more remarkable. The characters are drawn with craft and aplomb and ring very true, most of the times. The writing style has poise and flair and the promise of greater things to come. One of the most enjoyable features of the novel are the highly apt and poignant quotations from a broad range of books and movies which appear at the inception of every chapter. They almost always set the mood for what is to follow. The flaws in the plot are few and far between and pardonable for one so young. The positive attributes on the other hand are many and worth praising. This is not just a book for teenagers but has a broad appeal and great capacity to both mentally provoke and entertain. A very welcome and pleasant addition to the books in this genre.

A.B.C.D.s is an aboslutely hillarious description of a couple of mixed-up teens trying to find their own sense of cultural identity. Their absurd antics and escapades make the novel hysterically funny!

                                Book Description

A great deal of progress has been made recently in the field of asymptotic formulas that arise in the theory of Dirac and Laplace type operators. These include not only the classical heat trace asymptotics and heat content asymptotics, but also the more exotic objects encountered in the context of manifolds with boundaries and imposing suitable boundary conditions. To date, however, there has been no unified discussion of these results. Asymptotic Formulae in Spectral Geometry collects these results and computations into one book. The author focuses on the functorial and special cases methods of computing asymptotic heat trace and heat content coefficients in the heat equation and introduces results derived from the Seeley Calculus and other methods. He incorporates the work of many authors into the presentation, and includes a complete bibliography that serves as a roadmap to the literature on the subject. The formulas studied here are important not only for their intrinsic interest, but also for their applications to areas such as index theory, compactness theorems for moduli spaces of isospectral metics, and zeta function regularization. Geometers, mathematical physicists, and analysts alike will undoubtedly find this book to be up to date, well organized, and broad in scope-in short, the definitive book on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Another Life is Perfect.......2005-08-03

Everyone seems to focus on "House on the Embankment," which is an excellent novella but nowhere near as stunning as "Another Life," which is one of those rare works you can rate "perfect." I suppose "Embankment" gets more attention because it's ostensibly a dangerous attack on Stalinism, although that's just a small part of the story. "Another Life" is a merciless, painful and way-too-familiar account of struggle, pettiness, and failure in a stable, middle-class world. I guess most Americans don't want to read about that because it strikes too close to home. Better to focus on the evils of Stalin, since in the end, it makes us feel good about how civilized we are.

5 out of 5 stars Dom na Naberezhnoi (House on the Embankment).......2002-11-26

The story "House on the Embankment" begins with a man, Glebov, who is middle aged, balding, fat, and seeking to buy some furniture. It is around 1970, in the Soviet Union. While looking for the furniture, he notices an worker who appears familiar to him. It turns out to be a former friend, Shulepa, from his childhood days, who ignores Glebov after the latter calls out to him. Now Glebov is an elite member of Soviet society, so the question is raised as to how this successful academic is associated with this alcoholic loser.

The narrative then goes back to a time long since past, in the 1930s, before the Second World War. It is a tale of Glebov, Shulepa, and several other friends with names like "Bear" and "Walrus" growing up in or around a large apartment building in Moscow known as the "House on the Embankment." The House is a place of residence for those of the privileged class. The children are not much unlike those whom you or I may have grown up with. Trifonov does an excellent job of bringing every character in his novel to life. And there are certainly no shortage of characters in this story.

The narrative then gradually proceeds forward in time, to the War, to the 1950s when Glebov and Shulepa attended College, and finally up to the present time in which the novel began. There are many events which occur over the years, many tragic events; for example the disappearances of people during the Stalin era, and also things like unrequited love. As these events unfold, the reader begins to discover what was the cause of the animosity between Glebov and Shulepa in the beginning of the story. But Shulepa isn't the only one who hates Glebov, this man who has so little character.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this novel is the appearance of a second narrarator. The initial narrator is a 3rd person who is in the background; not an active participant in the events. The second narrator is different--he is actually one of the several friends in the story, and it is the readers' task to discover who the second narrator is. I read this story about 3 times before I narrowed down the choices to two different characters. After the 5th reading, and some research in the secondary literature to back up my conclusion, I discovered who it was. (I won't spoil it for you by telling you who it is here, but if you want to know, you can contact me.) Throughout the novel, these two narrators trade places, one distant and passive, the other one active and passionate in his narrative style.

This is a very beautiful novel, certainly worthy of the name "masterpiece." As I indicated earlier, I read this 5 times, and I found each read as interesting as the previous. Each time that you read it, you discover some subtle point which you missed the last time you read it; this is one of those stories in which the plots are so numerous, it is easy to miss something.

About the only thing that could stand some improvement is the translation of this work from the original Russian. (The original appeared in the literary magazine Druzhba Narodov in Jan. 1976, p.83) The translation is not bad, otherwise I might not give a good review here, however the translator, Glenny, leaves out certain intimacies between characters, and on some occasions, inserts or transforms sentences during the translation, of which I didn't see the necessity. I suffer from the belief that you should retain as much fidelity to the original during your translation, at least to the point where you begin to lose the reader because the expression you are translating does not have an equivalent in the second language.

If you can read Russian and have access to a good library, I suggest that you read the original. Otherwise, get this book, you won't be disappointed. There is another story in the book, which comes before "House," "Another Life." I haven't read it yet, so I am not reviewing it here. However, the book is worth the price with "House" alone.

5 out of 5 stars A novel that makes you shiver........1998-03-28

Trifonov's novel tells the story of a group of Moscow friends who grow into adulthood against the backdrop of Soviet Russia from Stalin through to Brezhnev's time. Trifonov uses two narrators, and their contrasting viewpoints make the betrayals and the corruptions necessary for individuals to survive in that time, especially poignant. The moral decay of the individual living in Soviet society and the use of history and truth as a football, are chilling. It is unfortunate that this novel is out of print because it is certainly one of the better novels to come out of the Soviet Union in its dying days.
