Book Description
For over fifteen hundred years St. Benedict's Rule has been a source of guidance, support, inspiration, challenge, comfort and discomfort for men and women. It has helped both those living under monastic vows and those living outside the cloister in all the mess and muddle of ordinary, busy lives in the world. Esther de Waal's Seeking God serves as an introduction to this life-giving way and encourages people to discover for themselves the gift that St. Benedict can bring to individuals, to the Church, and to the world, now and in the years to come.
Through this definitive classic Esther de Waal has become known as an authority for the lay person on the Rule of St. Benedict. Her ability to communicate clearly the principal values of the Rule when applied to lay people is the ultimate strength of this book. She follows each chapter with a page or two of thoughts and prayers, contributing to its meditative quality.

Spirituality.......2007-04-10
This is an amazing book in it ability to provide modern day interpretation to the St. Benedict's teachings. The insights of this saint who lived in the 6th century contain uncanny wisdom and direction for us today, whether as religious, lay person, for family and business leaders. Ms de Waal's style is thoughtful, prayerful, inspiring.
I recommend it to anyone who is interested in personal, and/or societel growth.
Excellent book on benedictine principles.......2006-12-14
I found Esther's book to be very insightful and concise. The only thing that trip me up a bit was the very small print and small fonts. Other than that she has a very clever way of explaining the rule of benedict and what it could mean for ones lay lifestyle. This is an excellent read for anyone wishing to become an Oblate.
Elegant!.......2000-07-31
Seeking God is an elegant, insightful, and extremely valuable treatment of the spirituality inherent in St. Benedict's Rule. The further into the book I read, the better I realized it was. Again and again I was impressed with the wisdom and psychological astuteness of the Rule as deWaal explained it. Benedict's way of moderation, humility, and balance, as interpreted by deWaal, seems one of the wisest and healthiest examples of Christian thinking that I have encountered. It is an excellent antidote to the regrettable tendency of some to want to separate body from soul and the material world from the spiritual world; Benedictine spirituality instead balances and integrates them!
Seeking God at Home.......2000-07-03
"Seeking God" helped bring "The Rule of St. Benedict" into focus for me, enabling me to see clearly the wisdom of Benedict's vision for our day. For two other books that explore Benedictine wisdom for parents, look for "The Family Cloister: Benedictine Wisdom for the Home" and "The Christian Family Toolbox: 52 Benedictine Activities for the Home", both by David Robinson (New York: Crossroad,2000 and 2001). Benedict still speaks relevantly and prophetically in our day!
Excellent in terms of spirituality and guidance........1999-04-19
The author was recommended to me both by my spiritual director and by a monastic. I see why. It is written simply and directly. It does not drip religiousity nor is it so esoteric that one becomes stalled in frustration. Instead, de Waal relates the Rule of St. Benedict to life in the world today. She does not compromise the Rule nor interpose her own "doctrine"- she draws from a great knowledge of writers of the Benedictine tradition from the past to the present, couples that with her experience as a wife and mother, presenting a straight forward discussion of the Rule, how it is of help to the Christian of today, and how it may be applied in the life of the individual who is seeking a rule for his or her own life. Her tradition is Anglican but one does not sense an intrusiveness- rather a calm, rational, feet on the floor contemplative guide which opens the door to further spiritual growth.

Stories from real people.......2007-09-03
Real people telling real stories of their lung cancer experience. True stories of survival and hope. Very good read and very informative.
A different sort of book on cancer.......2007-05-29
The personal stories included in "Voices of Lung Cancer" are poignant and true. These stories put a different face on lung cancer, and, amazingly, they're filled with hope and humor. Stories like Susan Long's "Rediscovering Daddy" and Barbara Terrell's "Now I Understand" give the disease a face and help others who are dealing with similar situations. The fact that Law & Order's S. Epatha Merkerson and Dr. Deborah Morosini, sister of Dana Reeve, have stories in the book only add to its interest. I highly recommend it. Shane Alexander.

As a perennial All-Star in the National Hockey League, Pat LaFontaine was one of the first American-born superstars in a sport dominated traditionally by Canadians and Europeans. Then in 1996 a blindside blow to the head smashed him to the ice. From that moment on, physically, psychologically, and spiritually, LaFontaine was a changed man. In this remarkable book--a book that must be read by everyone who thinks there are no true sports heroes anymore--LaFontaine chronicles his awakening to what winning and losing are really all about. 'Companions in Courage'. Even before his injury, LaFontaine had devoted time and money to helping kids with incurable diseases. But with his career cut short, LaFontaine began to survey the sports world and see whom he admired most. The answer was not a list of headline grabbers or record breakers. Instead, LaFontaine saw other athletes--some well known, some not--who had overcome incredible odds on and off their fields of competition. Now LaFontaine shares with us the extraordinary stories of these real heroes competing not just for wins or losses but, in many cases, for life itself.
Customer Reviews:
Not just about pros- good people facing hard choices.......2005-10-19
The reviewer who says HA! can't have read this book. Maybe Canseco's book, but not this one. I recently met LaFontaine, a man who loved his sport passionately, and like all professional athletes, was trained to ignore the pain. He now works very hard to create multimedia rooms in hospitals for very ill children. His foundation is called Companions in Courage.
There's a chapter in the book about a potential Olympic medalist who didn't fight the final bout to qualify (tae-kwon-do). It was not because her opponent was also her friend, though she was; it was because her opponent had dislocated her kneecap in the previous bout. The athlete forfeited, rather than take a sure win from a wounded opponent.
That's an amazing story, not another "pro athlete look at my pain" whine.
Michael J. Fox wrote the most recent foreword. LaFontaine is always working for his foundation, and he volunteers to be part of the prize for several charities' live auctions. These prizes have included: Golf with Pat LaFontaine, Hockey lessons with Pat LaFontaine, and more.
LaFontaine's book is like the man; genuine, intensely hard-working and willing to face fear head-on and try to come out the other side. I can't say enough about it.
A matter of balance.......2002-06-05
The previous reviewer does not appear to have read the book. While there a fair amount of discussion about LaFontaine and his career challenges, the book focuses on anonymous, unremarkable people, who manage to accomplish absolutely amazing things. There are several themes running through the book: the crucial role fathers play in the development of their children; the importance of faith in healing families and overcoming obstacles; the power of persistence and determination in changing lives. LaFontaine comes across as a humble, thoughtful, and decent man; there is little self-promotion or self-pity in his writing. Most of the stories (and there are dozens of individuals' stories told in this book) are told in two or three pages, making it perfect for teenagers. I have used these stories in teaching my own family, and in my role as a Church leader.
We are a nation steeped in nastiness. We spend incredible amounts of energy thinking of creative ways to tear one another down. A great man has said, "Cynics do not contribute, skeptics do not create, doubters do not acheive." Pat LaFontaine is a good and decent man, who has given much of his life to service. This book is a wonderful reminder that there are ample reasons for hope, that there is much goodness left among us. His work trancends the naysaying of people who can't get past the fact that he made his living playing professional hockey.
Inspirational? Ha !!.......2001-04-15
"Triumphant Tales" aims to be the inspiring tale of athletes and the misfortunes they have overcome, but instead succeeds merely at coming across as the sort of touchy-feely,pseudo-inspirational, stories that appear regularly on daytime talk-shows like Oprah and Sally Jesse Raphael. The athletes profiled in this book practically scream "look at the obstacles I have overcome," as if the mere fact that they have encountered hardships makes them simultaneously deserving of our pity and to be looked upon as heroes. The tales the athletes tell become fairly monotonous, with only the inclusion of former NHL star Pat LaFontaine accounting for the fact that this book was even published. The writing is pedestrian - even by sportswriting standards. Moreover, the book has no purpose other than to tell "Triumphant Tales of Heroic Athletes," as the subtitle states a little too obviously. The photo of the Olympic torch on the cover practically begs to be mocked, as if these writers have no sense of irony and actually believe the heroic tales they spin. What role did the NHL, television, and money play in Pat LaFontaine's repeated comebacks, despite the permanent damage that could have resulted from another concussion? This book will never tell, because that would only undermine the familiar template of innocent athlete being struck by (fill-in-the-blank illness) much too early, only to somehow overcome it in the end. Potential buyers be warned - life is too short to spend reading this book.
An inspiring and uplifting collection of life's stories.......2001-01-29
Companions in Courage is an inspiring and emotionally touching collection of the stories of how over 50 athletes were able to cope with their misfortunes. Few of us go through life without being tested either physically or mentally. Everyone who has been struck with these problems and is looking for inspirational guidance to overcome their condition should read this book.
Inspirational!.......2000-12-13
This is not your typical "athlete retires, writes his memoirs" book. Rather, it is an aggregation of inspirational stories that are as uplifting as they are touching. The dynamic of the human spirit is on full display in this compilation, and it's all wrapped in a neat bow by one of sport's all-time great role models - Pat LaFontaine. If you are looking for some personal inspiration or want to raise the spirits of a family member or friend in need of "companionship" or "courage", then this is the book for you.

A Great Start.......2007-09-26
Had submitted an article of my own for this anthology and had to withdraw it for reasons which had nothing to do with this publication. This is an EXCELLENT publication and I am so very happy for the publishers that they decided to go for such a worthwhile effort. Wonderful stories, etc - great source of information from the mouths of those most closely informed by this disease. I highly recommend this book, and the coming series, to anyone having a family member with one of these diseases, or caring in general about others and wanting to understand as much as possible. A horse is a horse of course unless of course the horse is Black Beauty. Animal-loving children have been devoted to Black Beauty throughout this century, and no doubt will continue through the next. Although Anna Sewell's classic paints a clear picture of turn-of-the-century London, its message is universal and timeless: animals will serve humans well if they are treated with consideration and kindness.
Black Beauty tells the story of the horse's own long and varied life, from a well-born colt in a pleasant meadow to an elegant carriage horse for a gentleman to a painfully overworked cab horse. Throughout, Sewell rails--in a gentle, 19th-century way--against animal maltreatment. Young readers will follow Black Beauty's fortunes, good and bad, with gentle masters as well as cruel. Children can easily make the leap from horse-human relationships to human-human relationships, and begin to understand how their own consideration of others may be a benefit to all. (Ages 9 to 12)

Behind Black Beauty.......2007-06-05
Black Beauty is a classic novel told through the eyes of a horse. Black Beauty's story is one of happy times, cruel owners, a frightning fire, and how some speical people can bond with animals. The book takes you from Black Beautys foalhood, through his training, being sold and resold untll he finds a home for keeps. This book teaches the virtue of being strong throug misundestandings, and bad times alike. But under the first artfully crafted layer of the story comes another meaning. This book is about british society, with its flaws and good parts too. Black Beauty, not geting to pick who he is sold to, is bought by people from all over the range of social status. He finds that the rich aren't always good nor the poor bad. When he finnally finds the right home though, he just knows.
Black Beauty.......2006-12-15
Black Beauty is one of the best books of all time. It's a very heart filled and emotional story. What I loved about this book was that it taught me that even in times of trouble there is always hope. Everyone should enjoy reading this book. Even if you do get emotional, keep reading! You'll understand what I'm saying when you finish the book.
Black Beauty.......2006-12-07
Black Beauty is an awesome book that you should enjoy reading. The author of " Black Beauty " is Ann Sewell. It's about a horse and he trys to be a loyal horse and trys to please his owner. It's really good because he is rasied by one family and then that family passes him on to another family and another family,so he just gets passed down from a whole bunch of people and he trys to please them as he goes.So this book would be a good book for all of you horse crazy kids!

Timeless Toys: Classic Toys and the Playmakers Who Created Them
ASIN: 081181162X |
Book Description
Ever wondered if Barbie had a last name? (It's Roberts.) Who invented Lincoln Logs? (John L. Wright, son of Frank Lloyd Wright.) Why a Wiffle Ball has holes? (So you can throw a curve without throwing out your arm.) Filled with a host of curious facts and little-known anecdotes about the creation and evolution of these and dozens of other timeless toys and games, Kid Stuff is a celebration of classic playthings, mostly from the 1940s through the 1960s, that are still popular today. Pairing colorful and evocative new photographs with reproductions of original ads and publicity shots, this delightful book reminds us why these toys live on -- both in our memories and on store shelves.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific Book.......2006-01-24
One way in which the thinking processes of successful inventors and entrepreneurs differs from the average person is that they often see a potential masker that others fail to see. Many demonstrations of this ability may be found when reading this delightful little book, Kid Stuff. David Hoffman has assembled the histories of the most familiar toys of our childhood. From the Ant Farm to the Whiffle Ball, he details how they were conceived, perfected, and promoted.
Consider the Slinky. If Richard James, in 1945, had not been intrigued by how a spring he accidentally dropped "walked" across the floor, the story could have ended right there. But be did see a potential. He perfected it, named it, and packaged it. It then died on the vine at the local retail outlet. Again, the story could have ended right there. However, he realized this was a new item and that it had to be demonstrated. When he demonstrated it at Gimbels, he sold 400 in minutes. In the 50 years since, 250 million have been sold!
Three basics in the Slinky story form a common thread that runs through many of these classic toy histories. First, someone sees a potential market; secondly, a dynamite trade name is created; thirdly, clever marketing is utilized.
Often the opportunity is in plain sight and, in fact, may have been for some time. Hoffman points out that it is said that the Yo-Yo is actually the second-oldest known toy (after dolls). Yet it remained for Donald Duncan, in 1927, to see the possibilities. Further confirmation that some people do look at the world differently may be had by noting that Duncan also invented the parking meter and introduced the Good Humor "ice cream on a stick."
An example of a mental process utilizing analogical thinking may be seen in the history of the Erector Set. Back in 1911, A. C. Gilbert observed girders being assembled for an electric system along the railroad line he frequently traveled. Realizing kids love to assemble things (wood blocks, etc.), he put together a toy kit consisting of girders, gears, pulleys, etc.
This power of observing the obvious and seeing the not so obvious is again shown in the history of Mr. Potato Head. George Lerner noticed how children love to play with their food. Who has not? He utilized the observation to create Mr. Potato Head. Incidentally, "Mr. Potato Head was the first toy to ever be advertised on television." The story recites how the toy has been adapted to the times. His pipe was eliminated and the last pipe given to the Surgeon General at the Great American Smokeout. Responding to safety regulation they increased the size of its pasts and made them less sharp. As Hoffman notes, the current Mr. Potato Head may surprise nostalgic parents, but he is still loved by the kids.
Another example of how a toy was adapted to the times is Antonio Pasin's original wagon, "Liberty Coaster," of 1923. It was made of wood and it was followed by the classic little red wagon, "Radio Flyer," made of steel. It was called "Flyer" to emphasize motion and "Radio" to honor the Italian inventor of radio.
If for no other reason, read this book to satisfy your curiosity as to how the classic toys came to be. How Paul Guillow created the balsa wood airplane industry. How a toy store owner and a marketing consultant created Silly Putty---it floundered until a mention in the New Yorker magazine resulted in orders for a quarter-million and it's sales has since reached the 200-million mark!
This book is jammed packed with toy trivia. Largest-selling football in the world? Nerf football. Barbie Doll's last name? Roberts.
Viktor Budnik's photographs for this book are terrific. They make this little book look good enough for your coffee table. But best of all, even your kids will enjoy this book and, perhaps, pick up on the idea that behind each toy there was a real person who took an idea from the dream world and brought it into the real world.
Not Just For Kids.......2005-05-03
From the infamous ant farm to Wooly Willy, this book covers all the hokey and cool toys you probably had if you grew up in the 60s, 70s or even later. The author does a nice job of providing an interesting synopsis of each toy, including its invention, popularity, and success (or lack thereof). There are dozens of obscure facts and stories behind the creation and evolution of these toys, and this book culls them all for us, making it a fun and enjoyable read.
The great thing about this book is that the toys featured include those that most of us had as kids (or at least had a friend who had them): Magic 8 Ball, Slinky (my personal favorite), Mr. Potato Head, Tinkertoys....and the list goes on. This book is great for the kid who never grew up.
Every babyboomer should own this book!.......2001-01-15
These guys have put together a tremendous walk down memory lane. If you want to know the secrets behind your favorite childhood toys (as well as be reminded about how much fun they were)...buy this book. Set it out on a coffee table at your next party, and you are guaranteed an evening of fun reminiscing.
This book is more than fun reading...it is childhood joy recaptured.
thanks for the memories.......2000-01-09
This book brings back wonderful memories. As a child it was wonderful playing and experiencing these wonderful toys. As an adult it is wonderful to find out why and how these classic toys came to be. This book is sure to bring a smile to all who read it.

An easy-to-understand, well-written parental guide.......2001-11-13
Jayne Pearl's Kids And Money: Giving Them The Savvy To Succeed Financially is a thoughtful, easy-to-understand, well-written parental guide to a the sticky conundrum of teaching children from age 4 to 18 on how to be responsible with their money. Tougher issues such as shoplifting, gambling, and overspending are also discussed, with practical advice for the wide gamut of family money situations. In an increasingly modern society where a few clicks of the computer mouse can drain one's credit card account as fast as electrical information can travel, money savvy is more important than ever, making Kids And Money a "must" for any parent whose children aren't already majoring in finance.
A Good Read!.......2001-04-17
Jayne A. Pearl shows you how to give your children financial roots and wings. By roots, she means good financial information, values, and ethics. By wings, she means encouraging kids to be confident, independent financial managers. While Jayne Pearl's information is thorough, some of it is specific to U.S. taxation laws and economic structures, which makes the book less useful to an international audience. We... recommend this book to parents who are concerned about their children's financial well being, and to those who need a refresher on good spending habits.
Money sense and family peace!.......1999-10-14
How many books do you know that have actually improved your life? We're not just talking finances here. This book will change the atmosphere in your family in ways you thought impossible.
Kids and Money convinced us to change our approach to allowances. Not only did we end up spending less by eliminating all those little "off-budget" extras, our kids suddenly became interested in getting value for their dollars. No more extravagant purchases that they wore once and forgot. And they began to take better care of the things they did buy. No more nagging!
Kids and Money is full of great advice on many other subjects. Including how to finance college if you didn't (or couldn't) start saving when the kids were born. And there's a terrific list of web resources at the end.
Everything I Never Knew..........1999-04-22
Financial matters to me are a big yawn, so it was great to read a book that made money something even I could understand. I don't know whether I've always handled my son's financial education in the best fashion, so it was reassuring to know that it isn't too late to make up for lost time. This book did a superb job of giving me actionable advice and -- for my husband and son -- lots of great websites to go to for more information. (Males will read anything that is on a website!) This book also makes a good reference for financial situations as they arise. My 11-year-old is nowhere near ready for college, but I'll keep the book handy for when the time comes...
I wish my parents had a book like this when I was a kid!.......1999-04-12
Reading Jayne Pearl's excellent book, Kids and Money, I was encouraged to find a roadmap to guide my daughter through the complexities of the financial world. Pearl's practical approach to teaching children ways of handling money from early on can help my child develop a healthy and savvy attitude about money that will serve her well throughout her life. If my parents had a book like this when I was growing up and had taught me more about dealing with money, it might have saved me from struggling with finances in my adult life. Children need a firm foundation in understanding the value of money and knowing what to do, or, what not to do with it. This can only come through conscious, explicit teachings. Pearl encourages dialogue with children and offers a wealth of advice in communicating about this difficult subject.
