Book Description
"An eminently readable, nicely researched tour de force that goes on my must-reading list for anyone interested in knowing the Chesapeake Bay."--Tom Horton, Baltimore Sun.
"This excellent book about the Susquehanna River is as good as, and maybe better than, the celebrated Rivers of America series books... Much more comprehensive than most river histories published before the recent rise of concern about dangerous water pollution."--John Goodspeed, Easton Star-Democrat.
"Susan Q. Stranahan could well know more about the present natural state of the Susquehanna River and its 27,500-square-mile watershed than anyone... She has written a fine book, well-researched and detailed, a thrilling account."--Richard L. Stanton, Philadelphia Inquirer.
Customer Reviews:
Not just a history, Almost a tour book.......2005-03-30
I've lived within 10 miles of the Susquehann River for the last 19 years. I have driven along(or near) the entire length from Baltimore to Williamsport and then all of the North Branch and most of the West Branch. Anyone traveling along US 15 has seen the features mentioned in the book.
The book does a wonderful job of conjuring images of the land and people(past and present) along the river. I am leaving the Susquehanna behind due to relocation and I am glad to have the book to bring me back whenever I need to "see" the "river of dreams".
A must read for a someone living in the watershed, or anyone interested in one of the truly most beautiful areas of North America. The Susquehanna River Watershed in its glory rivals other, more celebrated, rivers such as the Columbia, Mississippi, Ohio, Yukon, for beauty and soul.
Enlightenment on the history and splendor of the Susquehanna.......2000-07-26
I've spent the last 23 years enjoying the beauty of this river; not quite understanding how it has been tried and tortured over the last 400 years. Great writing, and a wonderful story to be told. For those in the Tri-State (PA,MD,NY) area, a must read.
WIthout this knowledge, you won't truly appreciate what Philadelphia, Columbia, Baltimore and other areas are today, or how they achieved their stature.

There are many guides to the Pacific Northwest, but few with this depth. John Doerper knows the region well and manages to weave in apple, cheese, and oyster tours of Washington; a guide to Northwest wineries; literary and historical extracts; as well as topical essays on subjects ranging from potlatch giveaways to Columbia River explorations to the cuisine of the West.
Doerper also provides pragmatic travel details--with transportation, accommodation, and restaurant specifics--though the focus of this guide is city and regional histories, sightseeing particulars, and an abundance of superior-quality maps. It also includes a good number of black-and-white historic reprints, courtesy of Seattle's Museum of History and Industry, and exceptional color photographs that capture the flavor and character of the various districts and neighborhoods in the Northwest--from the vineyards of Zillah to mossy trails in Olympic National Park to Port Townsend's harbor views. A high-caliber book by individuals who know, live in, and care about the region, Pacific Northwest is rich with enough inspiration for residents and visitors alike. --Stephanie Gold

Knowledgeable Author - Out Of Date Material.......2001-01-04
I have used the author's guide to Coastal California as well. Both of these are pretty good books. This author truly knows these regions, gives good advise and accurate descriptions. The problem is that it needs to be updated. The prices for the hotels are grossly inaccurate and many of the recommended restaurants have long gone out of business.
Additionally, there is an error in the book. There are detailed directions to get from Portland to the Columbia Gorge Scenic Hywy. and they are WRONG!
These detractors aside, this is a very well laid out and comprehensive book. When you read the book you will get a very good sense of what to expect. There is also some neat historical info. heading each region's sections. That is a nice way to introduce the next area. The maps are great and the tours are fun. The gift of this book and the other I mentioned by Dorper is that I think he really knows the area. It is not a quick or glossy overview of the area, but more of a feel of what a person who has lived and loved that place would tell you about it. It also benefits from the author's gifted and colorful writing style... never dry! The pictures are spectacular and do the area justice. A very good guide and a very beautiful place to visit.
Book Description
Seventeen-year-old Francie Martinez rides with one of the best equitation trainers in the country, and works as a groom to pay her way. She’s dreamed of winning the Maclay finals, and now that it’s her last year to compete the pressure is really on. But just when Francie needs to focus more than ever, everything turns upside down, and soon she’s not so sure if winning is really all that important, much less the point.
In this fast-paced coming-of-age story, brimming with fascinating details about the competitive horse world, Kim Ablon Whitney has drawn on her own experiences to create a backdrop perfect for Francie’s story as she tries to figure out who she wants to be and what really matters in life.
Customer Reviews:
Equestrian story for young adults.......2007-08-02
This was a fun story of a young girl immersed in the hunt for an Equitation Medal. Plausible, moves rapidly, satisfying ending.
Lame!.......2007-04-08
so, like, i read this book over March break cuz i dont like to read, but my teacher said we hav to read 1 book over break. i read this. i think it was soooooooooo bad!!!!!!!!! 1st of all, i dont know about horses and reallie dont care much, so it was like a total snoozer! Plus, also, i think it was way too much about the kid called Francy; i wanted to hear more about the kids at her school, like Becca and Traci. They seemd so cool. Francy was , like, not cool!
Last but not least i do not think taht this is a good book because it is unrealistic. I went to riding camp when i was like 8, and yes, it was Western, but STILL the instructor let me LOPE after a week, it was not hard! and we are supposed to believe that these West hill Stabls kids Have been training for "equitaton/medals THEIr WHOLE LIVES???????????? I mean come on i don't think so! If youre looking for good book, i heavily suggest "Goosebumps" series and if you like horses, side with a book entitled, " Diablo My Dream Horse"... even thouh i'm not "horsy" i still liked it!
Pretty good........2007-03-20
Except for starting out shaky and dropping some of the plot points so agonizingly built up, this book was pretty good. Rob, the trainer, was so realistic (and horrible) I was reminded of all the reasons I hesitate to compete: the lack of respect of and thought for the horse and its wellbeing, the verbal and emotional abuse that so many riders put themselves through just to be "the best," and the snobbishness and racism that are such a prominent part of the horse industry.
Do yourself a favor.......2007-02-24
If you're a fan of Jean Slaughter Doty's "The Monday Horses" or Barbara Morgenroth's "Last Junior Year," buy this book now while it is still in print. It's an excellent portrayal of the "A" horse show circuit.
Realistic.......2007-01-23
This book was wholly satisfying in a way that many "horse books" can't seem to reach.
Essentially, it all comes down to Francie - a horse loving 17 year old whose father is the groom at the elite West Hills Stable - her friend Katie - who is rich and can't get over the fact that Francie is poorer and a better rider - and the new boy, Colby - who is "amazing" and likes Francie, not Katie.
I was pleased that this book avoided some cliches like Francie actually winning, or Colby staying back at the farms for her, or Katie magically getting over herself, or Rob getting due punishment for his outrageous behavoir. Thankfully, none of these things happened.
However, I was slightly disappointed that the author had to drag in the most cliched horse-book cliche in the history of equine fiction: insurance fraud. Many, many horse books seem to dance around this subject.
I highly recommend this book to anyone - the author did a fantastic job at realism! If you aren't too nerdy with all the technical show jumping terms, don't be afraid - it won't prevent you from enjoying this outstanding novel.

Book Description
When his father marries her mother, Chris Fitton and Nan Mallory—both twelve—are thrust into a new life. While their parents are enjoying an extended honeymoon, Chris and Nan must live with Aunt Elizabeth, attend new schools, and worst of all, be civil to one another. They’re certain that their future is bleak—until Chris’s visit to the Salvation Army store. It is there that he finds the model of the Red Hart Inn, a structure that holds a strange allure for them both.
That night, Chris and Nan find themselves in the same dream—living inside the Red Hart Inn in seventeenth century England. And when danger threatens, they must set aside their differences and find a way to work together—before it’s too late….
Customer Reviews:
Red Hart Magic.......2007-06-27
This book gives insight into the history of England during one of its turblent periods. It also gives a clear look at the problems facing children in new and strange circumstances. It is great reading for early teens.
strong fantasy wrapped inside a poignant family drama.......2007-05-25
Chris Fitton's father and Nan Mallory's mother marry leaving their stunned twelve year old offspring to stay with Aunt Elizabeth for six months while their parents gallivant in Mexico. Both children are used to living with someone else; whereas Chris stayed at boarding schools, Nan was raised by her grandma, who has moved into a senior citizen's community in which children can visit for short times, but cannot stay. At a nearby store, Chris finds the model of the Red Hart Inn. At night while asleep and dreaming, Chris and Nan believe they have traveled to the real Red Hart.
"The King's Hunters". During the rule of King James, Chris and Nan try to save the innkeeper accused of being a priest who if true illegally owns the Red Hart Inn which is punishable by death.
"The Gentlemen". The smugglers seek the wounded excise officer in order to kill him before he can identify them to authorities; he hides in the Red Hart Inn where Chris and Nan try to keep him safe.
"Hue and Cry". When the fire burned down Squire Mallory's barn, Chris is accused of committing the arson that almost killed several people. Bow Street runner Harry Hawkins, a friend of the family, tries to prove the lad is innocent before an angry mob takes justice into its own hands.
This reprint of a 1970s young adult tale is character driven as in between their adventures; Nan and Chris have problems at home and at school. They feel like they do not belong anywhere and reject being step-siblings. The most popular girl in class wants Nan as a friend, but at an exorbitant cost; the most popular boy in the school picks on Chris. However, their time travel "dreams" that they have shared provide confidence for both to seek the right thing. Thus the great Andre Norton provides the audience with a strong fantasy wrapped inside a poignant family drama.
Harriet Klausner
Abrupt.......2004-06-16
It's an interesting story but the ending is abrupt. It's as if Andre Norton got bored writing it and decided to stop. No explanation is given for what happened to the two protagonists. Nor is any explanation given as to if the strange things will continue or if they have stopped.
Some fascinating glimpses of the past........2001-02-08
Chris Fitton's father and Nan Mallory's mother recently married, but this isn't the Brady Bunch by a long way. Chris has spent his life in one boarding school after another, while Nan's grandmother raised her during her mother's long assignments overseas as a photographer. Even now, Chris and Nan are living with Chris' aunt Elizabeth; their parents just got married and promptly took off for a 6 month assignment in Mexico. Neither kid has seen them since before they announced the wedding.
For years, Chris' father has given him money to buy presents, since he's never with his son much himself to get to know what he'd like. When aunt Elizabeth drops Chris and Nan off at a movie soon after Nan's arrival, Chris opts to shop for a present instead. In a strange store he's never been to before, he finds a very old model inn, bearing the sign of a red hart (i.e., a male red deer).
Chris and Nan soon discover that the Red Hart carries some kind of magic; in their dreams, they find themselves in the real Red Hart, an English inn, in various periods of the past.
"The King's Hunters", in King James' reign, finds the two of them thwarting a Pursuivant who attempts to prove that the inn's owner is secretly a Catholic priest (a capital offense in that place and time). Catherine Aird's mystery _A Most Contagious Game_ would be a good read for anyone who's interested in how priests managed to survive and the tricks used to build hiding places for them.
In "The Gentlemen", a wounded Excise officer is being sheltered from local smugglers in the inn. This story makes a sharp, interesting contrast to Vic Crume's _Dr. Syn Alias the Scarecrow_, a terrific book that's also a movie by Disney with Patrick McGoohan (the hardest Disney classic to find on video as of this writing, may I add). The chief of the smugglers in "The Gentlemen" is as anonymous as the masked Scarecrow - 'he could be any man in the village, leaving out the parson and the squire.' (If you've read or seen the Scarecrow's story, you'll get the joke.)
In "Hue and Cry", Chris is falsely accused of setting fire to Squire Mallory's barn, a blaze that could have killed several men. Harry Hawkins, a friend of his father's days in Wellington's army, one of the Bow Street runners, is called in by Ira Fitton to uncover the truth. (This is *long* before the runners evolved into the Bow Street Station of Anne Perry's Thomas Pitt.)
In the present, the kids have their own troubles, apart from getting along with each other. Nan is 'befriended' by the most popular girl in class - only to find that the price of entry into her circle is too high. Chris, on the other hand, is the favorite target of the most popular kid in *his* school - the bully who's captain of the soccer team. The lessons they learn in the past stand them in good stead.

Four Boys, Four Cultures, Four Dragons.......2003-05-28
This is Norton for the younger reader-- about 5th grade to 9th grade. Four boys descended from four different cultures but all now living in the same neighborhood in the United States, assemble a puzzle that lets each of them have an adventure based on the dragon of each culture. In dealing with these dragons each boy learns an important lesson about cooperation and tolerance.
While the young adult reader may find this book a tad simplistic compared to Norton's adventure stories, this book can be a perfect way to introduce a reader at the appropriate level to the many worlds of Andre Norton.

4 tales of dragons, in various flavors.......2001-07-05
Sig Dortmund, Ras (a.k.a. George Brown, but his older brother has persuaded him not to answer to that), Artie Jones, and Kim Stevens are the only boys in their age group who catch the bus outside the abandoned house on the extra-long run from the new development to their school. Each is lonely for one reason or another, but each keeps to himself. Until one by one, they sneak into the old archeologist's abandoned house, searching for hidden treasure. The only interesting thing is a 4-piece dragon puzzle, lying abandoned on a table. One by one, each assembles one quarter of the puzzle, and relives the history of that particular dragon, learning things that allow them to work together as a team in the end.
"Fafnir (Sig Clawhand)" - Sig Clawhand's deformed hand made him an outcast at Mimir Master-Smith's forge, where he lived and worked as a potboy. Only Sigurd King's-Son, working at the forge on the strength of Mimir's Foresight, has ever befriended him, and never called him 'Clawhand'. Thus it is that when Sigurd ventures forth against the dragon Fafnir, Sig fares forth as his faithful shadow.
"Sirrush-Lau (Prince Sherkarer)" - The lau, the demon-monster of the swamplands, brought ill luck to Napata upon its capture - the city was taken by the Babylonians, who took the lau back to Babylon as tribute. Sherkarer, a junior prince of the royal house of Napata and now a slave, is the only survivor of the original hunting party, so he has been taken along as the expert on the care and feeding of the lau (called sirrush by the Babylonians). But the Babylonian priests have made a wager concerning sirrush-lau with one of the king's advisors, and Sherkarer's only hope is to humble his pride and work with this strange enemy of the priesthood - a man called Daniel...
"Pendragon (Artos, son of Marius)" - Artos, the Pendragon, is the only thing standing between the realm and a long fall into barbarism, in these latter days after the fall of Rome, but he faces rebellion. Young Artos, the son of one of the Pendragon's faithful supporters, chances to learn of a conspiracy, and acts as a messenger to try to warn the king in time.
"Shui Men Lung - Slumbering Dragon (Chin Mu-Ti)" - The Emperor's canny old advisor might have looked half-asleep, but he was about as safe as the slumbering dragon he was called. When a general under his command rashly stakes his head as a wager on the success of a risky campaign, the old 'dragon' must salvage the situation.
