5 out of 5 stars The best rivers in Michigan.......2003-03-16

This guide was originally published in 1985 and has been a valuable resource as I have wandered around Northern Michigan. It's details are as factual today as when first written. The details of every launch and entrance to each river is remarkable. I've fished many of the spots and have found the descriptives to be right on. I just wish I was a better fly fisherman. I keep this book with me and even make notes in it. I highly recommend this for any experience level.

2 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but dated.......2003-10-29

This book covers all areas of the state of California, and could be very useful in comparing and selecting between the eleven areas of the state that the authors profile. The book covers many cities and towns, but does miss some towns that could be of high interest to retirees -- such as Auburn and Morro Bay. Unfortunately, since the books was copyright in 1998 and because of the rapid increases in real estate values, the home prices given are quite out of date.

Very good explanations and data of the towns covered. I wish the author had included a more cities in the book.

    Book Description

The Sweeter the Juice is a provocative memoir that goes to the

heart of our American identity. Shirlee Taylor Haizlip, in an

effort to reconcile the dissonance between her black persona

and her undeniably multiracial heritage, started on a journey of

discovery that took her over thousands of miles and hundreds of

years. While searching for her mother's family, Haizlip

confronted the deeply intertwined but often suppressed tensions

    between race and skin color.

We are drawn in by the story of an African-American family.

Some members chose to "cross over" and "pass" for white while

others enjoyed a successful black life. Their stories weave a tale

of tangled ancestry, mixed blood, and identity issues from the

17th century to the present. The Sweeter the Juice is a memoir,

a social history, a biography, and an autobiography. Haizlip gives

to us the quintessential American story, unveiling truths about

race, about our society, and about the ways in which we all

    perceive and judge one another.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Well written, but surprisingly racist.......2006-12-20

The Sweeter the Juice clearly demonstrates that racism is equally prevelent on both sides of the color line. While Haizlip's book is well written, the author is no less guilty of racism towards white people than the WASPs she condemns. Her comments about whites and "poor white trash" in particular are uncalled for (i.e. "my mother said there is nothing worse than poor white trash" and "a nice white person is nothing more than that. A nice white person"). As the descendant of working class Southern whites I was personally offended by her assumptions about my ancestors. In fact, my father rose out of Southern poverty and all of the associated racial biases of his family.

When a white person does something gracious for Haizlip, she overlooks it and portrays it as a negative event. For instance, when Martin Luther King is shot and Haizlip's white neighbor comes by to make her tea and offer her sympathies, the author says "she said that assuming she knew how I felt." While Haizlip's ambivalence towards whites is understandable given some of her experiences, she makes just as many stereotypes about whites as they do of her. She claims to be an integrationist, but part of the reason American society is not socially integated today, is the self segregation of blacks and mixed race people like Haizlip.

Haizlip is contradictory at times. As a New Negro like her mother, she is "eager to please" and be accepted by white culture, but at the same time, she resents her caucasian heritage and is active in African American social circles. This book seems to be more about the author's insecurities about her racial identity than about bringing familes together.

After meeting her white relatives, Haizlip creates a "white corner" to keep their photographs separate from the rest of her family. She says she wonders if they would have ever bothered to find her. This seems a bit ridiculous since it is the grandson of her aunt Grace who takes the initiative to locate Haizlip and unite the families along with her. Again, Haizlip cannot accept as legitimate any positive actions on the part of whites. Haizlip tells her daughter that she keeps the white family's photos separate from the others because it wouldn't be honest to do otherwise. Haizlip explains that she will never be able to connect with her white relatives because their lives are too different from hers- they passed for white and she didn't. So does this mean that Haizlip cannot have anything in common/be friends with any white person? And she's the one who worked so hard to locate her mother's sister to begin with. Without meaning to, Haizlip is passing down her own anger towards white people to her daughters, potentially preventing them from forming bi-racial friendships with whites who are color blind would not reject them the way Haizlip's mother's relatives rejected her.

The saddest part of this book is that towards the end, Haizlip does not accept her new-found white relatives the same way they accept her. She keeps their pictures and their lives as separate, but equal (to quote a Jim Crow phrase) as possible.

In order to make herself feel part of "Us" instead of "Them," Haizlip turns poor whites into the "Them." This is not how we will solve today's racial problems. Racism will only be solved if everyone becomes part of "Us."

5 out of 5 stars Only book Oprah recomended actually worth reading.......2006-04-13

I am not an Oprah fan but one day with nothing to do I actually spent a rare session in front of television flipping channels. And I found myself stopping at her channel at her show's beginning wondering What is it This time?

The author of this book and her mother were there to discuss this book and her family saga as well as the Issue of 'Passing'.

I found their discussion so facinating that next day I went straight to the book store and ordered this book. Later I would buy other books on the subject.

Not wishing to be 'controversial' I must confess that the book was quite fasinating and I did enjoy reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable, while still intense book...........2003-12-13

I enjoyed this book from cover to cover. Sure, some of it was confusing, like some said, but what part of genealogy isn't confusing? My own genealogy confuses ME! :o) This book was wonderful! I think the author did a wonderful job in addressing this little spoken of topic. I was recommended this book after I found out that my family had African American roots, & so this book hit home with me. It aided me through an emotional journey...answering many of the questions such as: "Why so many secrets?" It also helped me to understand that some of my family members will never in their lifetimes will willing to openly talk about this subject, but the book confirmed my feelings that it's their loss. Thanks & kudos to the author!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Lost Family.......2003-03-24

I just read this book. It was very moving and insightful. It was so sad that Margaret Taylor, Shirlee's mother, was abandoned by her father, sister and brothers, and endured such a difficult childhood. It took over 70 years for Margaret to find her sister!

I think that Grace Cramer's life was more tragic, perhaps, because she blocked out so many memories and isolated herself. I would think she could have at least written her sister, once in 70 years! even if she was nervous about revealing her heritage to other people. It was wonderful to hear that Grace's grandchildren had a happy meeting with Shirlee.
The photos are great and the stories about the Taylors, Morrisses etc. are inspiring. It was fascinating to read about African American life in New England and the South. I look forward to reading the book about the Haizlip marriage.

5 out of 5 stars A first rate piece of writing.......2002-10-13

The author, Shirlee Taylor Haizlip, is of mixed race parentage, her father more dark skinned black than her mother. Her mother, the youngest of her family, was abandoned by her brothers and sisters and her father, a mulatto, her mulato mother having died. Most of her surving relatives (those of Mrs. Haizlip's mother) moved away to other places and passed for white. The last child of the family, she was a painful reminder to them of the black experience they inherited. This abandonment happened around 1916. She passed into several gaurdianships and then ended up in the home of a light skinned couple, a dentist and lady who was slowly loosing her sanity. Her female gaurdian spent most of her time covering her furniture with white sheets, pulling down the blinds of the house and running around in rags. Her mother eventually met Julian, a part white and part Indian, a divorcee son of a prominent black minister. They married and Julian Jr. settled in as a pastor to the small black community in the working class town of Ansonia Connecticut.

In the pictures provided in the book, Margaret and her mother look rather Mediteranian. Margaret and Julian their three children, plus some foster children, lived an exceedingly happy middle class lifelife. There were summer homes to vacation, pleasant trips to Baptist national conventions, regular shopping trips, a vibrant social life, guests at home from NAACP leaders to Jackie Robinson. Racial problems were a little part of their life in this community. The children, except for the only sun Julian Jr. nicknamed "Brother," one of the few problems in their lives, were very successful in school, full of extra-curricular activities, camping, clubs, and so on.

Not exactly the life of the average black family in the 1940's. The author would marry a gentleman named Harold Haizlipp, attend Ivy league schools. They were amongst the elite of New York, sitting on a bunch of trustee boards, knowing all the famous intellectuals, and it was in such genteel circles that she and her husband conducted activism against racism. One interesting incident was a party thrown by the Haizlips in apparently the late 60's in New York. Attendees included Betty Shabaz, widow of Malcom X and a daughter of Nelson Rockefeller. A white woman, apparently some sort of civil rights worker, was brought along with one of Shirlee's friends. She apparently was so overcome by the interracial socilization going on, in addition to the nature of the party which called for guests to wear costumes revealing as much skin as possible (inspired by the play "Hairspray). The woman gripped around Harold's Cousin tightly and started screaming that the black males there wished to rape her before she was subdued and taken to a mental hospital.

Harold was commissioner of education in the Virgin Islands from 1971 to 1980. Shirlee had to fret about things like worrying about wearing the same dress as Queen Elizabeth when she met the latter. She became manager of the local CBS affiliate on the island and tried to make its programing reflect the interests of the natives. When she returned to the U.S., she became a director until 1986 at New York Public Television station WNET and had a few unpleasant racial situations there. She moved on to be the director of the National Center for Film and Video preservation at the American film institute and she found quickly found herself out of place in this organization which declared "Birth of a Nation" to be one of America's greatest film treasures. She didn't last long there. She expresses a great deal of disillusionment with race relations in this country.

The author towards the end of the book (set in the early 90's) helps her mother seek out her "white" relatives and there is mostly happy reunions. The interaction with Shirlee's Aunt Grace is particularly interesting. That lady was apparently quite sincere when she said she had no memory of her early life of things that related to the "black" part of her life. She had blocked it all out. Grace also is quoted bring up the issue more than once of her Spanish translator grandaughter going out with Hispanic men. She says "what's wrong with a good white man" and that her grandaughter's boyfriend is "dark--like a black man."

This book, except for the first part which is somewhat stiffly writen-- where the author laboriously describes, her ancestors, their physical features, their houses, personalities and so on--is a first rate piece of writing. The author has lived an exceedingly romantic life, one with lots of family love, friends and activity. ...

1 out of 5 stars Overrated and Unimaginative.......2007-07-31

Based on the jacket description, I thought this would be a book of short stories delving into different aspects of the human soul and psyche, both dark and light. That is not what I found and certainly not how I would sell this book. While I was impressed with the first story, and the level to which the author managed to draw the reader into the characters in a few short pages, it was the only one that I thought was worth reading. The rest were, for the most part, simplistic, unoriginal, woe-is-me pity the poor people drivel. While some of the stories, such as "Red Nose Day," may have benefited from more in-depth development and background information, most of the stories were simply lacking in every sense of the word, I didn't care about the characters, I was mostly bored by the plots, and I wasn't intrigued by the "worlds" the author created. As for this book being an exploration of the darker side of the human spirit, tame is the only word I can use to describe it. Perhaps I have more experience with dark literature than the average reader, but I would say light gray is about as dark as this book gets. For readers who are interested in exploring the range of the human psyche, from its best to its worst, I would recommend the Black Jewels series by Anne Bishop and the Kushiel's Legacy series by Jacqueline Carey. Bottom Line: If you are looking to be intellectually stimulated or even truly entertained, look elsewhere. This collection will fall far short of your expectations.

4 out of 5 stars No Small Feat.......2007-01-18

I have nothing but praise to offer for the range and depth of Margo Lanagan's creativity. Her worlds stretch beyond, her characters beneath, her eerie tone deeper than any collection of short stories I've ever read. These ten short stories, touted as young adult, might pass as such to some, but not to me. These tales are older than young adult, despite their characters' ages. The tone and voice of these stories is not distinctly young adult, but something more vast.

Community burial rituals, reeking wrestling angels, wandering hopeful brides, loyal escaping elephants, and other bizarre images litter this collection with a freshness that, when her worlds came to life, sang to my soul. Perhaps it was just this reader, but some of the stories lost me completely. Maybe I'm not as savvy a reader as I think myself to be, but I do expect myself to be able to understand what's happening in the story. There were a couple of the stories, I confess that I stuck through in hopes I would "get them" later on.

But those were the exception. I enjoyed her fresh use of language, her frequent linguistic inventions that worked, her bold exploration of words. The young adult world needs more short story collections like Margo Lanagan's, which was one of the 5 finalists for Best of Young Adult at the 2006 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. To be named among such authors as Per Nilsson, John Green, Markus Zusak, and Andreas Steinhofel is no small feat.

    And neither are her stories.

Absolutely superb. Don't read the book copy (it might give too much away), in fact - don't even read these reviews. Just buy the book and dig in. You won't regret it.

    4 out of 5 stars Haunting.......2006-10-02

A dreamy affair, this book traverses the boundary between reality and the hyper-real with breathtaking skill. The storylines are often unimportant, taking a back seat to the prose, which flows and twists with great dexterity and poetry. This is a strongly visual book that would certainly appeal to readers of all ages. It would be of particular interest to those with a predilection towards fantasy. There is a strong thematic of family bonds throughout, and though no time period is mentioned, the nature of the writing and storytelling (strong family themes, the near absence of any technology) gives me the impression that most of the stories are set in the distant past, which only adds to the otherworldly qualities. I like the title as well because blackness is a strong image created throughout, almost like the book is an anthology of stories from the dark ages.

Black Berry, Sweet Juice is "on being black and white in Canada"

I went into this book thinking it would be the same old race diatribes that I've been prone to my entire life. There should be equality between races, there is one race: human, etc. These are all things I believe, but are also fairly obvious, so everytime I read anything about race, I get frustrated by the same things being reitterated.

Lawrence Hill made me think of things that I hav never thought about before. He's well research, incredibly unbiased, recognizes that race IS an issue and that in order to abolish racism Canada must recognize that!

Insightful, well written, and well researched. A must for anyone, and a most definate must for any mixed race men and women.

                    Book Description

The first supplement to the three volume reference work "Comprehensive Asymmetric Catalysis" critically reviews new developments to the hottest topics in the field written by recognised experts. Eleven chapters which are already in the major reference work have been supplemented and additionally five new chapters have been included. Thus the state-of-the art in this area is now re-established. Together with the basic three volume book set this supplement is not only the principal reference source for synthetic organic chemists, but also for all scientific researchers who use chiral compounds in their work (for example, in biochemical investigations and molecular medicine) as well as for pharmaceutical chemists and other industrial researchers who prepare chiral compounds.

                      Book Description

These are the notes of a lecture course given by the author at the T.I.F.R. Centre, Bangalore in late 1985. The contents are divided into three chapters concluding with an extensive bibliography. Chapters 1 and 2 deal with basic properties of stochastic flows and especially of Brownian flows and their relations with local characteristics and stochastic differential equations. An appendix on the generalized Ito#^ formula, Stratonovich integral and Stratonovich stochastic differential equations has been added to Chapter 2. By the way of applications of the foregoing, limit theorems for stochastic flows, along with a unifying general limit theorem, are then presented in Chapter 3 including: - Approximation theorems for stochastic differential equations and stochastic flows, due to Bismut, Ikeda-Watanabe, Malliavin, Dowell etc. - Limit theorems for driving processes, due to Papanicolaou-Stroock-Varadhan, and - Limit theorems for stochastic differential equations, due to Khasminkii, Papanicolaou-Kohler, Kesten-Papanicolaou etc.

                            Book Description

The authors present analytical methods for synthesis of linear stationary and periodical optimal controlled systems, and create effective computational algorithms for synthesis of optimal regulators and filters. The procedures of Youla-Jabr-Bongiorno (1976) and Desoer-Lin-Murray-Saeks (1980) are special cases of this procedure. The monograph also includes original computational algorithms (solutions of usual and generalized Lyapunov and Riccati equations, polynomial matrix factorization) and illustrates the effectiveness of these algorithms by examples in the field of numerical methods for optimization of linear controlled systems.

                            Book Description

1927. Wharton, American author, is best known for her stories and ironic novels about upper class people. Wharton's central subjects were the conflict between social and individual fulfillment, repressed sexuality, and the manners of old families and the nouveau riche, who had made their fortunes in more recent years. Among her numerous novels, short stories, and travel writings are The House of Mirth, Ethan Frome, and the Pulitzer prize-winning Age of Innocence. The Twilight Sleep deals with the postwar, Jazz Age frenzy of a middle-aged American clubwoman and do-gooder, Pauline Manford. The story is understood through the eyes of Pauline who schedules an almost supernatural round of meetings, social engagements, and self-improvement sessions completely distracting her from the collapse of her family. Customer Reviews:

                            5 out of 5 stars The 1920s seem familiar.......2004-09-28

Whenever I come across a novel by Edith Wharton, I know that it is only a matter of time before I read it. I look forward to the entertainment of visiting an exotic culture--the high society that Wharton inhabited. And I also expect to find an insightful portrayal of the human foibles that are not constrained by time and social class.

Edith Wharton was both a master of the English language and a keen observer of human nature. I sometimes stumble upon a phrase that is so sharply honed that I pause to think, "Wow! That's perfect!" Such was the case in TWILIGHT SLEEP, which holds up well to Wharton's better known novels.

In this story, the members of an extended family pursue all manner of diversions, fads, and fantasies to compensate for their inability to fully embrace life. There are some archaic attitudes and politically incorrect references, but on the whole, I was amazed at how contemporary the book felt. Although written and set in the 1920s, there are modern parallels to nearly every indulgence explored by the book's characters. In many ways, little has changed!

Pauline Manford, the matriarch who links the characters together, is an archetypical American in this affectionate satire. She's an optimistic, energetic but hopelessly simplistic meddler. Her daughter Nona, however, is thoughtful and perceptive. Like other Wharton heroines, Nona sees through many of her society's standards but can't bring herself to break free of them.

I could sense the plot accelerating toward a tragedy or at least a confrontation, so surprisingly, the book became quite a page-turner. Thanks to Scribner to bringing this and other out-of-print Edith Wharton works to my attention.

5 out of 5 stars One of her greatest.......2003-11-10

This shockingly modern novel ranks among Mrs. Wharton's finest. Hard to imagine EW in the roaring twenties? She writes with the same personal grace and sly eye for the details behind the facade when focusing upon the moderns as when drawing the old New Yorkers. Those fading, listless aristocrats are included here as contrasts for the self-obsessed, alienated and narcissistic flappers. The novel resonates with modern themes, unfinished American themes; it may be the Jazz Age, but it is as now as anything I've ever read. It is also a gripping page turner- with characters at odds with the fates and the customs of society- as unforgettable as Lilly Bart's sipping of laudanum in House of Mirth and the farewell dinner for Countess Olenska in Age of Innocence.
Those uniquely Wharton flourishes abound; the sumptuous dinners with the invisible calculus of seating assignments, shifting winds of wars with reality and passion, all carried out in black boudoirs, silver crusted serving plates and overseen by women draped in jewels. Within it all the people suffer against an atavistic demon hell bent on tearing their refinement and their highly ritualized world to shreds. It is all here- within this fortunate reissue. If you are a fan of Wharton, I guarantee you will devour this book. Edith Wharton's novels are national treasures- and this one is one of her finest.

                            5 out of 5 stars A psychological tour-de-force in velvet gloves, a tragedy........1999-05-23

Wharton is as stunningly effective as in "A House of Mirth", here conveying the frustration of a circle of people interdependent upon one another, destined to follow society's rules no matter what the cost. Each character desperately clutches at a "twilight sleep"; the mode of coping each engages to distance reality. Masquerading as habit or whim, the painted veil of illusion overlays each mode of addictive escape. Nona, the beautiful, well-bred New Yorker struggles with an imperatrix sister-in-law Lita, whose values (and their consequences) threaten the entire social order Nona's family fabric is woven of. The Marchesa dispenses her social value as Pauline erases her son's debts. Lita's tabloid exposure and screen career must be suppressed. The men escape into work while the women flail at vanity of excess. The whistle of tragedy sounds in the distance as Nona falls into love with a married man, her brother Jim hopelessly esconced in a bad marriage with a woman he idolises, while her father works himself into an eagerly embraced oblivion, while Jim's father openly drinks to forget the societal oasis he knew before his divorce. Nona's mother compulsively schedules all their lives to death, while pursuing the escapist mysticism of faith healing and the blind support of the latest guru. As the Jazz Age brings down the curtain on the theatre of old New York and its values, Art and Cinema loom. While the family coalesces at their country estate to save Jim and Lita's marriage, each battle with their chosen talisman against life and its evils. Much more is at stake and much more is lost. This startlingly psychological novel will fascinate any student of life. The sacrifice of a fragment to obtain the societal whole inevitably comes, more starkly portrayed here than anywhere, the novel having served as forceful denouement. In the tolling bells of Whartons' worlds, the death of illusion sounds the deepest peal.
