3 out of 5 stars Religion Vs. Nature.......2007-07-02

Luke's life has always been difficult. His father is a minister, and his job keeps Luke and his mother and little sister moving around often to different churches. He is always the new kid in his class, and that is sometimes hard. Even harder, though, is the fact that Luke has always been left-handed. His father believes that left-handedness is the sign of the devil, and he spent much time trying to force Luke to be right-handed. Luke tries also, but can't deny that it is much easier to do everything when he uses his left hand instead of his right.

One day shortly after moving to another new town, Luke comes across an informal baseball game, played by boys about his age. When a ball rolls to his feet, he picks it up and throws it back with his left hand. The rest of the boys are blown away by how good the throw is. Luke's father, though, feels almost the same about sports as he does about left-handedness. He would never consent to let Luke play baseball.

As his classmates keep pressuring him to join a team and his left-handed uncle also encourages him, Luke feels more and more tempted. Is it possible his father isn't always right?

I liked Luke's internal struggle to be something he couldn't be. I liked that he respected his parents enough to try to do what they wanted, but he was his own person enough to question them. I also liked Luke's uncle--he was a great character to balance out Luke's father.

I thought Annbeth's attraction to Luke and her pursuit of him didn't seem realistic, though. She seemed too aggressive for this time and for a girl who barely knew this boy. I also didn't like how the author resolved the conflict between Luke and his father at the end of the book. It seemed like the author took the easy way out.

4 out of 5 stars "Cornwall, NY Sixth Grader".......2007-03-09

"I am a sixth grader. I chose this book because the title interested me because of the topic of baseball and sports. Anyone who enjoys baseball will be interested in this book. When I started to read it, I realized that there was a lot more to the book than just sports. The main character, Luke, was a great pitcher who will teach anyone who reads the book a lot of lessons.
All Luke wanted to do was pitch, but his dad would not let him. He was the local preacher and he believed that baseball was the Devil's work. Luke was scared of what his dad would do if he found out that he loved baseball and wanted to play. A kid in Luke's class, named Skinny, was always trying to convince Luke to play baseball on the town team so they could make it to the State Championships, but the problem always went back to his dad the preacher.
Luke was a lefty and his dad also thought that being left-handed was the work of the Devil too. I found his thoughts about the Devil kind of strange! Luke's Uncle Micah, who became a big part of Luke's life, was also a lefty and he encouraged him to pitch with his left hand, because he knew it was important to him. My favorite part of the book was when Luke pitched his first game and struck someone close to him out. Everyone was cheering for him, even Annabeth, the girl he liked. Annabeth always told Luke he was lucky to have the chance to pitch because there was not a girl's league for her to play in.
Something tragic happens in Luke's life that changed his priorities and made him think differently about baseball. I liked this book and would recommend it because it teaches a good lesson about the importance of family and how sports may not always be the first thing to think about in your life. Luke figures out that things will work out and you can do whatever you want without forgetting about what is important in life." P.L.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book From Start to Finish!!.......2006-12-04

John Ritter's "Choosing Up Sides" is a beautifully written story of a boy trying to understand his father, all centered around the game of baseball. The cover enticed me to open the book and dive right into it. Then the story took over! The characters come to life on the pages. I found this story funny, entertaining, suspenseful, and amazing. This book will become a baseball classic for all time. I highly recommend this book.

Nancy lends a hand in a local election -- where issue #1 is murder.

River Heights is about to elect a new mayor and every candidate will have to take a stand on crime. But Nancy's choice, District Attorney Caroline Hill, apparently doesn't have a leg to stand on. Small-time hoodlum Bobby Rouse has implicated the DA in a bribery scandal, threatening her integrity and her chances for victory.

Nancy's convinced that Caroline is the victim of a frame-up, but before finding the proof, she has another victim on her hands -- Bobby Rouse, victim of murder. Politics can be a dirty business, and it's up to Nancy to root out the corruption. Fearing that the election will be decided not by ballots but by bullets, Nancy knows this is one race she can't afford to lose.

                4 out of 5 stars Who's Choosing Who?.......2004-09-10

One of the most interesting characters in the Sweet Valley Twins series is Amy Sutton - Elizabeth Wakefield's best friend - an independent tomboy who is athletic and intelligent, and who's also prone to buttoning her blouses wrongly and having bad hair days. 12-year-old Amy is an imaginative creation by Francine Pascal, given vibrancy by Jamie Suzanne's writing, and fondly beloved by many readers. Readers of the Sweet Valley High series will hardly recognize the child Amy in her teenage self: as a 16-year-old, Amy Sutton fails to inspire in any way. The sparkle that Suzanne gives to this character in Sweet Valley Twins simply does not exist in the Sweet Valley High series, and the older Amy is disappointingly bland and obnoxious. Choosing Sides, however, tells the story of a very radiant and free-spirited girl, determined to be a cheerleader against all odds. Elizabeth's lack of confidence in her best friend - her over-protectiveness - only makes Amy's dream of being in the Boosters Club that much more complicated.

Choosing Sides unfolds an interesting dynamic between the two best friends who, so far, have managed to share many similarities and many differences without compromising their friendship. Yet almost from the beginning of this story, Elizabeth's insecurity and jealousy are obvious to her readers. The blurb for Choosing Sides is also somewhat misleading: we are lead to believe that it is Elizabeth who has to choose between her feelings for Amy and her feelings for her twin, Jessica - a Booster - who judges Amy's skill in baton twirling to be very little mitigated by her unglamourous appearance. This blurb is misleading, because a closer reading of the story actually reveals that a choosing of sides is only apparent in Elizabeth's mind - that is, in her incorrect perception that Amy's decision to be a Booster also inevitably means a choice between her, Elizabeth, and the Unicorns. Elizabeth's unspoken insecurity and jealousy exists because she fears she will lose Amy's time to cheerleading practice, and Amy's friendship to the influence of the Unicorns, Sweet Valley Middle School's most exclusive and elitist clique, and a juvenile version of a high school sorority group.

Readers applaud Amy for refusing to be bullied into staying away from the Boosters Club, comprised mostly of Unicorn girls. Readers also applaud Amy for her independent course of action even without Elizabeth's true support, amidst her own doubts and fears. Ken Matthews, reduced in size but not in heart in the Sweet Valley Twins series, gives Amy much-needed encouragement as he, too, struggles to make the boys' basketball team. Choosing Sides is a wonderful, uplifting story of triumph over elitism.

In this book, the twins' friend, Amy Sutton, wants to become a cheerleader. However, Amy isn't popular as the other cheerleading girls, and she faces a lot of harrassment from the cool crowd. However, Amy proves herself and never gives up, and gives it her best at try-outs. This book is a great book in the series and I recommend it! The reader learns a lot about Amy and her friendship with Elizabeth. It's fun and the reader really wants to know the outcome.

From Publishers Weekly: Set during Prohibition, Ritter's debut novel features a rural Kentucky dialect and a sympathetic hero "stuck smack between two worlds." Luke Bledsoe's conflicts with his father, a volatile fundamentalist preacher, take on a new dimension when the seventh-grade southpaw discovers his pitching power. Classmates who have seen Luke accidentally throw with what his father calls "the Devil's arm" urge Luke to join the local baseball team, but Luke's left-handedness is not the only trouble: participation in sports is strictly forbidden by his church. The narrator is strongly tempted to side with "wild-as-a-witch-dog" Uncle Micah, another lefty, who encourages his nephew to follow his own natural course. Luke's movement toward independence is realistically cautious but frustratingly slow?until his father's accidental death brings a quick turn of events and tidy solution to problems. Criticisms of religious taboos and narrow-mindedness are hurled as forcefully as Luke's fastball. More artful, subtle expression may be found in the author's depiction of local color and metaphors mostly having to do with fishing and hunting. Despite its somewhat didactic tone, this story offers enough curve balls to keep readers engaged. Ages 10-14. Recipient of the 1999 International Reading Association's "Children's Book Award." Named an American Library Association "Best Book for Young Adults." Named a 1999 "Blue Ribbon Book" by The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books.

Author interview included. Thirteen-year-old Tyler loves spending the summer in New York with his cousin. Each day, they play baseball in a Central Park league. Tyler is a sharp hitter, so he hopes to become an All-Star. But he has a temper that is quicker than his swing. If he cant control it, he will lose his place on the team. Theres trouble off the diamond, too. An awful accident has turned Tylers dad into a distracted stranger. People tell Tyler that time will heal his fathers wounds, but what about the hurt Tyler feels? He just wants to bat it away. John H. Ritter, author of the ALA Award-winning Choosing Up Sides, has created a realistic story of one boys struggle with fear and forgiveness. Narrator Johnny Heller captures the emotions of a young teen beginning to understand the impact of his choiceson the baseball field and in his life.

Although this book was useful in providing insight into the importance of this field in the bigger picture, it had only a few articles that i found to be really seminal. There were some sections of interest, but most of it was far more specific than i needed.

                                Book Description

This book teaches the basic methods of partial differential equations and introduces related important ideas associated with the analysis of numerical methods for those partial differential equations. Standard topics such as separation of variables, Fourier analysis, maximum principles, and energy estimates are included. Numerical methods are introduced in parallel to the classical theory. The numerical experiments are used to illustrate properties of differential equations and theory for finite difference approximations is developed. Numerical methods are included in the book to show the significance of computations in partial differential equations and to illustrate the strong interaction between mathematical theory and the development of numerical methods. Great care has been taken throughout the book to seek a sound balance between the analytical and numerical techniques. The authors present the material at an easy pace with well-organized exercises ranging from the straightforward to the challenging. In addition, special projects are included, containing step by step hints and instructions, to help guide students in the correct way of approaching partial differential equations. The text would be suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics and engineering. Necessary prerequisites for this text are basic calculus and linear algebra. Some elementary knowledge of ordinary differential equations is also preferable.

This book cover the basics of partial differential equations. It's well written, motivational, and balanced rigorous. It contains a lot of good exercises which is a necessity for a beginner in this field. I read this book during a university course in the subject. I struggled. But in my opinion this book is pretty close to the ideal presented by Einstein: "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler".

                                  Book Description

Motivating this interesting monograph is the development of a number of analogs of Hardy's theorem in settings arising from noncommutative harmonic analysis. This is the central theme of this work. Specifically, it is devoted to connections among various theories arising from abstract harmonic analysis, concrete hard analysis, Lie theory, special functions, and the very interesting interplay between the noncompact groups that underlie the geometric objects in question and the compact rotation groups that act as symmetries of these objects. A tutorial introduction is given to the necessary background material. The second chapter establishes several versions of Hardy's theorem for the Fourier transform on the Heisenberg group and characterizes the heat kernel for the sublaplacian. In Chapter Three, the Helgason Fourier transform on rank one symmetric spaces is treated. Most of the results presented here are valid in the general context of solvable extensions of H-type groups. The techniques used to prove the main results run the gamut of modern harmonic analysis such as representation theory, spherical functions, Hecke--Bochner formulas and special functions. Graduate students and researchers in harmonic analysis will greatly benefit from this book.

                                  Book Description

Fourier analysis is one of the most useful tools in many applied sciences. The recent developments of wavelet analysis indicate that in spite of its long history and well-established applications, the field is still one of active research. This text bridges the gap between engineering and mathematics, providing a rigorously mathematical introduction of Fourier analysis, wavelet analysis and related mathematical methods, while emphasizing their uses in signal processing and other applications in communications engineering. The interplay between Fourier series and Fourier transforms is at the heart of signal processing, which is couched most naturally in terms of the Dirac delta function and Lebesgue integrals. The exposition is organized into four parts. The first is a discussion of one-dimensional Fourier theory, including the classical results on convergence and the Poisson sum formula. The second part is devoted to the mathematical foundations of signal processing ¿ sampling, filtering, digital signal processing. Fourier analysis in Hilbert spaces is the focus of the third part, and the last part provides an introduction to wavelet analysis, time-frequency issues, and multiresolution analysis. An appendix provides the necessary background on Lebesgue integrals.

If you don't like the sloppy arguments often provided by engineering books, then this is the book for you! The prerequisite is some familiarity with the Lebesgue Integral. The author provides a clean development of the L1 and L2 theory for both Fourier Series and the Fourier Transform. In addition, he covers the basics of signal processing and wavelets in a concise, but rigorous, style.

                                  Book Description

Fourier analysis is one of the most useful and widely employed sets of tools for the engineer, the scientist, and the applied mathematician. As such, students and practitioners in these disciplines need a practical and mathematically solid introduction to its principles. They need straightforward verifications of its results and formulas, and they need clear indications of the limitations of those results and formulas. Principles of Fourier Analysis furnishes all this and more. It provides a comprehensive overview of the mathematical theory of Fourier analysis, including the development of Fourier series, "classical" Fourier transforms, generalized Fourier transforms and analysis, and the discrete theory. Much of the author's development is strikingly different from typical presentations. His approach to defining the classical Fourier transform results in a much cleaner, more coherent theory that leads naturally to a starting point for the generalized theory. He also introduces a new generalized theory based on the use of Gaussian test functions that yields an even more general -yet simpler -theory than usually presented. Principles of Fourier Analysis stimulates the appreciation and understanding of the fundamental concepts and serves both beginning students who have seen little or no Fourier analysis as well as the more advanced students who need a deeper understanding. Insightful, non-rigorous derivations motivate much of the material, and thought-provoking examples illustrate what can go wrong when formulas are misused. With clear, engaging exposition, readers develop the ability to intelligently handle the more sophisticated mathematics that Fourier analysis ultimately requires.

I'm a junior student majoring in EE. This book is the best one on the market which provides a friendly approach on the subject for a beginner like me. I strongly recommend this book to any engineering or physics students. You will use this book over and over even in your major.
However, it would be even better if Dr. Howell can publish a software application book goes with this fantastic text.

This book is wonderful. It is quite clear and is written at a level for seniors and beginning graduate students.

It presentation is not as intense and terse as Lighthill's and Zemanian's on this subject. There is a good balance between the rigor and pedagogy that is quite appealing to me, along with examples and exercise with some answers/hints in the back for the end of chapter exercises.

Hopefully, Dr. Howell will update this book soon if needed. Also, it would be nice if the book were available in the size, shape and price of the books published by Dover. The book is quite big, thick and costs a hundred bucks.

Overall, I think many like/would like this book - it seems to get much use in the Library.

In this fourth volume of a projected six, Huxley registers his deep misgivings about the course of history in the late 1930s as the world moved toward a second global war. Many of his essays reflect his continuing interest in the conventions of popular culture as well as the philosophy of science and history, particularly as they inform developments in art and politics.
