Book Description
This meticulously researched book covers the surprisingly rich history of ski mountaineering and also doubles as a detailed guide to 54 sought-after mountain descents-from New Hampshire's Mount Washington to Alaska's Mount McKinley. The route selection is a hit-list intended for all levels of telemarkers, snowboarders, or alpine skiers.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating read and invaluable guide--a perfect gift.......2001-12-07
The combination of compelling anecdotes, history, and practical information will make this classic book stick around a long time. What really got me, is how someone could put so much information and photographs and readable narrative between two covers. Like 50 Classic Climbs, the book is a must have for all riders, skiers and mountaineers, and made the perfect gift for my husband.
Just talking about the beautifully reproduced photographs alone, without the text, this would be an awesome coffee table book. But we like to ride too, and now that we've enjoyed all of the routes in Colorado, we're looking at Mt. Shasta and Alaska.
The backcountry skiers guide to the universe........1998-06-13
Wild Snow is the most inspirational, well written, complete book on backcountry skiing I've seen. Each chapter has concise and interesting details on some of the greatest ski descents in North American.
an invaluable reference work for the ski mountaineer.......1998-04-23
lou dawson's book fills an important need in north american ski mountaineering, in that it both inspires the novice and tantalizes the seasoned outdoor buff. the trail guides in this volume are enough to keep anyone busy for a lifetime of off-piste adventure. we need more books like this.

Customer Reviews:
hauntingly beautiful.......2007-09-10
I particularly enjoyed descriptions of Helen/Jenny's excitement about being able to taste, smell and feel things such as a simple apple.
Some reviewers have described the book as light reading for adults. I am old and found the book very moving.
It does seem strange to me that books are classified as "teen" just because the characters are teenagers.
Actually, Helen and James are emotionally in their 20s, despite being in teen bodies. It is true that they are dealing with teen problems, but from an adult perspective. However, I think the book would be fine for anyone who has reached puberty and has had proper sex-ed.
Perhaps Jenny's born-again parents are something of a stereotype. Her father getting hot for her after he thinks she has had sex with a grown man seemed a bit gratuitous. But as long as there are millions of hypocritical fundamentalists (of various religions) spreading poison in the world, there need to be books that show the evil consequences of that behavior.
Intersting.....but.......2007-09-01
I got into this book and wasn't sure that I was going to make the effort to finish it--but I am not a quitter and I had to see it through to the end. I found that the writing was very unique and the language of the story was beautifully written. I am glad that I read the whole book and didn't give up, but I would not recommend this book to anyone I know especially a young adult. There is a lot of offensive language in it--over the top I think even for today's standards. The situations that the main characters find themselves in are very adult and very descriptive--almost too much for me and way too much for a young adult. I found the concept of the "Christian" family portrayed in this book to be unrealistic and badly stereotyped.
I cried at the end of this book and was glad I gave it a chance--but read it at your own risk.
Interesting "slant" .......2007-08-22
This was captivating with an interesting twist on the ghost / haunting concept.
I wasn't too fond of some of the characterizations, or the frank language - I think the same concepts may be carried off without being as obvious in some respects.
The novel did keep me turning the pages, though I thought the ending was rushed.
Slow start but a strong finish.......2007-08-20
This book started off slow. It took me a couple of chapters to understand what exactly was going on with the main character. Once I connected with the main character though I was intrested and the story had captivated me. I have never read a story like this with this type of plot or characters. It was refreshing and the story compelled me until the beautiful ending. I did not give this book 5 stars because of the time it took to hook me in- I almost stopped reading it, although I am very glad that I did not. The story is quite beautiful and I really enjoy the meaning I found hidden underneath the plot. This is a book that I feel has meaning on many levels. I would say a good age to read this story is in high school or older. You can tell an English teacher wrote the book with all of the many nods to great literature peppered through the book. I think if you are open minded and enjoy a good romantic ghost story this book will be a great read for you!
Great book, a winner in my eyes.......2007-08-10
I've read this book twice now and I can honestly say it made me cry both times. Laura Whitcomb's writing style pulled me in and I found myself finishing the book in a day (both times) People complain that it stereotypes Christianity but to me that is far from true (Christianity isn't even the POINT of the novel). But in regards to those comments, sure, it might be stereotypical, but there are both sides to the spectrum of Christianity- some families are definitely like the one in the novel. Back to the important stuff- I highly recommend this novel to anyone in need of a good read.

love her characters.......2006-06-10
Grace Brannigan Witoczynski is a single mom with 4 kids. Mal Quarrels is a a US marshal working undercover who needs to keep an eye on Grace's tenant. Grace is honest, tough, vulnerable, smart, believable. Mal is tough on the outside and good to the bone, totally unflappable ... except when it comes to Grace. The plot ties together pretty well; suspense is a relatively small part of the book but well done. The kids and dogs are well-drawn as well.
My only complaint is that I'm pretty certain that Grace's sister Alice Brannigan and her protective husband Gabriel Book were featured in a previous Ramin book, but I can't seem to find out which one! So I'm searching out the rest of her backlist.
Book Description
At the heart of Cynthia Thayer's debut novel, Strong for Potatoes, was the tender relationship between a girl and her grandfather, evolving as their lives grew and changed. Now, Thayer tackles another kind of relationship, one born out of a meeting between strangers but forged in the need for survival.Peter lost his wife and children in a fire years ago, yet the wound is fresh, painful. He's become something of a hermit on the coast of Maine, shearing sheep and gardening to live, an old Passamaquoddy woman his only friend and bagpiping his only passion. Elaine is eight months pregnant and on the run from her husband, a hard man more interested in control than love. Fear is simply part of her life, fear for herself and her unborn child. When Elaine turns up outside Peter's cabin during a terrible winter storm, Peter can't turn her away into the ice. The two lonely adults clash, then slowly discover that friendship, support, and healing grow in the unlikeliest of places.AUTHORBIO: Cynthia Thayer was born in New York City, raised in Nova Scotia, and now lives in Gouldsboro, Maine, where she, her husband, and daughter-in-law own and operate an organic farm. She is also the author of Strong for Potatoes.
Customer Reviews:
Well Worth Your Time.......2006-12-07
I love this unassuming book. It is well written. The story draws you in and the characters are well fleshed out. The plot is fresh and believable. There are struggles and unsavory back stories but not the oppressive bleakness of an Oprah book. I recommend this book to all my friends and I think you would find it a good read. Well worth your time.
Silas Marner revisited.......2002-10-07
This tale is a modernized, closely observed retelling of George Eliot's Silas Marner: a once-naive young man, devastated by loss and betrayal, spends 15 years as a recluse in a rural society before finding--perhaps--redemption when a lost soul shows up on his doorstep. In Thayer's version (and she doesn't mention George Eliot in her foreword, somewhat to my surprise), it's a neighbor who's the weaver, and the baby is yet-unborn when its mother arrives on a winter's day on the hermit's doorstep. (I read Silas Marner as soon as I'd finished Certain Slant of Light, having recognized the plot and characters from Steve Martin's movie version of Silas Marner, A Simple Twist of Fate). Unlike some other reviewers here, I found the Jehovah's Witnesses in Thayer's retelling--particularly the husband--wholly backwards, stifled, misogynistic, and in all ways despicable, and the girl's decision in Thayer's tale left me feeling depressed, cheated, and disgusted. Thayer makes a vital plot point out of the girl's adamant decision as a J.W. not to allow a blood tranfusion for her child should it be born with a condition requiring such a tranfusion to survive. I found Thayer's resolution of this "plot complication" ethically and dramatically bankrupt. Thayer writes beautifully and evocatively, and I'll read whatever she writes next, but this particular book just wasn't to my taste (which may say more about me than the book, since a dear friend of excellent taste cites this as her favorite book). Happy reading to all...
A Certain Slant of Great.......2002-04-05
A new view of dolls, a new view of the culture of Jehovah's Witnesses, and a new view of bagpipes. This story had me feeling right from the beginning, and didn't let me stop until the last page. Cynthia Thayer's writing is clear, emotional and eloquent throughout. The title was worked into the story, but not so much that you were hit over the head with it. I am definitely passing this book along to friends.
Quite a Good First Effort.......2001-11-15
This isn't a bad book, and is quite good for a first effort from this author. It certainly isn't your normal romance story, and there is a definite feeling of hope that comes through. It is a story about two very strong-willed people and how they clashed at first, and then found out that they complimented each other. It's also a good view of the Jehovah Witness faith, and let's face it, there's not many books about that. The writing is good, and the story moves along nicely. I liked these characters and I think you will too.
Good of its kind.......2001-08-15
Yes, the story is corny. Yes, the events are predictable. But the standard of writing is high, and the author doesn't fall into the obvious traps - except, possibly, for the tendency to make Peter into a respectable-man-turned-hermit-by-grief rather than a genuine recluse. I also liked the way she avoided making an issue of the Jehovah's Witness lifestyle (though, let's be fair, the presence of the Witnesses in the story was only a plot device to give Elaine an excuse for staying put). All in all, a good read.

Women overcoming adversity.......2002-06-01
There is a thread weaving its way through the storyline of this (mostly well-written) first novel: the growing pains of two women at very different points in their lives, whose paths cross and who ultimately become each other's stalwart defender and champion. With the exception of some unnecessarily intense and terse dialogue, the characters prove to be interesting enough to hold the reader.
It is revealed in the liner notes that the author herself attended a small Catholic college much like the one in her story. Our brilliant protagonist, Sarah Morrow, is an aging yet still popular Chaucer scholar, whose personal tragedy does not become her downfall - on the contrary, her personal relationships with her former students: one devastatingly handsome Jesuit priest and Joan, a young divorced mother, are what hold her together throughout a long process of renewal.
This story demonstrates the power of inner strength over political and personal adversity. If you enjoy references to Long Island, the LIRR, medieval literature and don't mind an occasional jaunt into one woman's personal philosophy about the restrictions of Catholic academic politics (with a few expletives NOT deleted), then you will come away from reading this book with a newfound appreciation for the strength inherent in the lives of women who don't let adversity get them down!

Book Description
Cyanobacteria make a major contribution to world photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation, but are also notorious for causing nuisances such as dense and often toxic `blooms' in lakes and the ocean. The Ecology of Cyanobacteria: Their Diversity in Time and Space is the first book to focus solely on ecological aspects of these organisms. Its twenty-two chapters are written by some thirty authors, who are leading experts in their particular subject. The book begins with an overview of the cyanobacteria - or blue-green algae, for those who are not specialists - then looks at their diversity in the geological record and goes on to describe their ecology in present environments where they play important roles. Why is one of the key groups of organisms in the Precambrian still one of the most important groups of phototrophs today? The importance of ecological information for rational management and exploitation of these organisms for commercial and other practical purposes is also assessed. Accounts are provided of nuisances as well as the ecology of the commercially successful Spirulina and the role of cyanobacteria in ecosystem recovery from oil pollution. Many chapters include aspects of physiology, biochemistry, geochemistry and molecular biology where these help general understanding of the subject. In addition there are three chapters dealing specifically with molecular ecology. Thirty-two pages of colour photos incorporate about seventy views and light micrographs. These features make the book valuable to a wide readership, including biologists, microbiologists, geologists, water managers and environmental consultants. The book complements the highly successful The Molecular Biology of Cyanobacteria already published by Kluwer.

The extraordinary Booker Prize shortlisted story of a black man's revenge against an unjust and intolerant society.
Thomas Keneally was born in Sydney Australia in 1935. He studied to be a Catholic priest but abandoned his vocation to take up teaching and writing. He is the author of numerous works of fiction and non-fiction including Schindlers Ark which won the Booker Prize in 1982 and was made into a successful film.
Customer Reviews:
As fresh and trenchant as the day it was written........2001-04-19
One would hope a book written about race relations thirty years ago would be irrelevant and possibly dated today. Unfortunately, Keneally's stunning indictment of turn-of-the-century racism, in this case that of Anglo settlers towards Australia's native aborigines, remains vibrant and powerful, even after these many years. Literally timeless in its message and articulate and graceful in its execution, The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith could have been written about many minorities subjugated during many periods in many different countries.
The basic story is not unique. Half aborigine and half Anglo, Jimmie Blacksmith grows up in aborigine culture. Because he is light-skinned, however, he is able to obtain jobs on white landholdings more readily than other aborigines, and there he is exposed to Anglo culture--with all its stated, good intentions, but its sometimes patronizing attitudes and selfish goals. After being worked hard and cheated from his earnings repeatedly, Jimmie snaps, visiting on his former employers the kind of fatal "justice" which has so often been dealt to the aborigines. As vigilantes and police join forces to apprehend Jimmie, we see all the conflicting attitudes toward life and justice which undermine the creation of a unified, fair society.
The throbbing drumbeat of Jimmie's chants and Keneally's insistent narrative pace combine with our revulsion toward Jimmie's actions, to catch us up in the emotions of both the pursuers and the pursued. Our understanding of Jimmie and our empathy with him make us long for his redemption at the same time that we are anxious for justice to take place. Keneally's resolution is brilliant, fittingly combining the best elements of both of Jimmie's worlds. This is a wonderful novel which deals with a complex and sensitive subject without polemics or convenient, easy solutions, and it's as relevant today as it was when it was written.
Stark and powerful.......2000-12-27
This book tackles the tricky area of inter-racial violence bravely and with great skill. It paints a shocking picture of the Australia of 100 years ago, and particularly the plight of the aboriginal community. Keneally's economical style is perfectly suited to this dense narative; he makes every word count. One of the best books I've read this year.

Jimmie Blacksmith is a halfbreed, if you will. One white and one aboriginal parent. This gives him access to more opportunity at the time, than the fullbloods.
His exposure to this society and their treatment and attitude towards him and his people leads him to snap. Very violently.

Still haunting after all these years........2005-06-26
One would hope a book written more than thirty years ago about race relations at the end of the nineteenth century would be irrelevant and possibly dated today. Though a novel like The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith could have been written about many minorities subjugated during many periods in many different countries, Keneally concentrates here on Anglo settlers and their attitudes towards Australia's native aborigines. Timeless, articulate in its presentation, and graceful in its execution, the novel remains vibrant and powerful in its universal message, even after these many years.
The basic story is not unique. Half aborigine and half Anglo, Jimmie Blacksmith grows up in aborigine culture. After being worked hard and cheated from his earnings repeatedly, Jimmie snaps, visiting on his former employers the kind of permanent punishment which he has seen so often being dealt to the aborigines.
