Book Description
Focusing on the oft-overlooked herbaceous layer of eastern forests, this volume combines perspectives from different levels of biological organization (ecophysiology to ecosystems) and forest types (from the eastern boreal forest to southeastern pine forests) into a synthesis of our knowledge of the ecology of this important forest layer. This is the first book of its kind to synthesize information concerning herbaceous layer structure, composition, and dynamics of a variety of forest ecosystem types in eastern North America. With over 1,200 references cited in the 14 chapters, this book represents the most comprehensive review of literature on the ecology of the herbaceous layer.

Review of Gilliam and Roberts' The Herbaceous Layer ..........2004-03-01
The Herbaceous Layer in Forests of Eastern North America is an invaluable reference tool for those interested in studying forest ecology. The editors have assembled an impressive group of scientists who weigh-in on current issues related to the herbaceous layer of eastern forests. Subjects include nutrient cycling, ecophysiology, composition, interaction with overstory, temporal and spatial dynamics, disturbance, invasion, and more. This is a text that has been long-needed, and includes numerous references that will be helpful for graduate and undergraduate students alike. My doctoral research work has been significantly enhanced and influenced by reading the chapters presented in this book. The ecologic importance of the diverse and multi-functional forest plant layer cannot be overstated. The editors have done justice to the formerly-known "step-over" plants, revealing their significant and intrinsic link within a comprehensive definition of forest ecology. Every college and university library should have at least one copy of this book, and every student of forestry would benefit from keeping this book handy.

the best for travelers to Japan.......2006-07-29
Covers all major hot springs in the regions of Japan.
You need this guidebook!.......2004-12-31
Hot springs, called Onsens in Japanese, are one of the greatest pleasures Japan has to offer. Due to its volcanic nature, the entire country is literally bubbling with thermal waters, and thousands of years of careful refinement has created a paradise of hot water soaking. Anyone coming to Japan should have a few onsens on their travel agenda, and a copy of "A Guide to Japanese Hot Springs" in their luggage. Anyone living in Japan should definitely have a copy on their bookshelf.
Authors Anne Hotta and Yoko Ishiguro have divided Japan into regions, then highlighted some of the best onsens in that area. Each onsen is sub-classified by location, properties of the water (the different types of mineral waters each boast a healing power,) around and about detailing special information about the onsen and its area, close accommodations and a few extras such as local foods and legends surrounding the onsen.
Although it was written in 1986, I have found the information to still be current, with all of the directions and accommodations still accurate. Of course, the prices have altered since then, but that is to be expected with every guidebook. Perhaps a good rule of thumb is to double every price in the book, for a more modern assessment.
The only flaw in the guidebook is a lack of ranking, or recommendations. Onsens are only classified by area, and there is no quick method for sorting which are the best. A "10 Onsens worth planning your trip around" section, a star-system, or something of the sort, would have been appreciated. Also, the background and history of onsens is slim, and could have been a more interesting section.
Overall, however, "A Guide to Japanese Hot Springs" is an indispensable book, and one that has greatly added to my time in Japan.
Hot hot hot springs ahhhh...........2000-12-04
Despite it being written many years ago, the reviews and information on most of the springs are still true. I think I've visited about 11 of the springs mentioned in this book - and all were just as it said they would be. There are interesting stories about the springs, and what kind of waters they have (for example: water to make you youthful, water to promote pregnancy, or water to "invigorate"). The instructions on how to get there and where to stay are clear and easy to follow. I've never been lost on the way to any of these springs. I've read this book cover to cover several times, and then flicked back and forth as a reference. The hardest thing is deciding which of all the springs you want to visit - the authors make them all sound good by picking up points of interest about each one. If you like being lazy, soaking in hot water, having pummelling massages from heated waterfalls, eating and drinking until all you can do is drag yourself back into a hot tub...this book is essential for any trip to Japan. Enjoy reading it before you go - and then make a list of where to visit while you are there. The book itself is not too big, so it will fit in your bag to take along with you. I only gave 4 stars because I am waiting for a new edition to come out!

Messenger sends a Message.......2007-10-18
Wow, was this book a surprise. After about one hundred pages, I was done - I hated that the main character couldn't take more action, do something with his life, bathe his disgusting dog. But then these incredible, strange, emotionally significant "missions" start happening, and I felt drawn into caring about him and the people he encountered in a surprisingly profound way. I'm not sure which group of young people will remain interested in this sad sack long enough to get to the truly inspiring, change-your-life qualities he takes on later in the novel, but I would recommend it anyway.
I am the Messenger.......2007-10-09
I am the Messenger
By: Marcus Zusak
This book is a realistic fiction/mystery. This book is about a under aged cabbie driver named Ed. Who has done pretty much nothing meaningful in his life in till one fateful day when he stopped a bank robber. From that day forward his life got very interesting. He started to receive aces in the mail. On each card there were clues. Ed is faced with a difficult task he has to first solve the clues on the card and then he had to help a person. His best friends Marv, Audrey, and Ritchie give him advice along the way. Ed has to complete five cards in order to finish. Can Ed and his three best friends figure out the clues? If he fails he will be killed. Ed makes a lot of new friends and enemies in his adventures. He also realizes things about his friends he never knew before. This is Ed's time to shine but is he up to the task? This book related to my life because it showed me that any normal Joe can step up to the biggest obstacle and defeat it. That somehow affects my life because it taught me that lesson. I read this because it sounded like a great book. I loved how the author made the characters interesting and real. The plot was very original and exciting. The connection between the characters was very believable. The setting description is pretty vivid and the plot wasn't all that great but on the whole it is a very good book. It was truly a book that I couldn't put down until I finished it. I do not recommend it for younger kids because it is a mature book but I do recommend it to teens and young adults.
Ordinary Heroism.......2007-09-20
Though many people dislike the book's ending, I found it quite fitting. Zusak inspires readers with his creation of an ordinary hero. Ed motivates adults and teens alike to save the world. Just as Ed receives minimal information outlining his mission, we too must emerge from our lives of self-absorption and extend ourselves.
How does Ed save others? He watches, waits, and delivers. Though the action may be small, the kindness is powerful. This taxi-driving youth's understanding of people's need is astounding. Telling a young runner she possesses beauty. Bringing an old woman a past love. Reuniting a friend with his lost child. And, ultimately, giving himself the greatest gift of all.
This book is a fast read, not only because of the simple writing style, but also because of my lack of patience in awaiting Ed's next mission. Few can read this book and not be encouraged to create their own lives full of LIFE.
Yes -- a Bad Ending CAN Cost You a 5-Star Review.......2007-09-20
A very good concept, tight writing, interesting characters -- and an absolutely awful ending. That's a shame -- the idea of a young man being forced by a mysterious stranger to engage with the people around him and become an active participant in his own world is marvelous. The characters are crisply drawn, the plot is novel and charming, and the prose is quite well executed. So: the author couldn't sustain it, and didn't really know how to end it. Big deal? Yes- when the cop-out is of this magnitude. Don't bother with this one -- it's just too long a book and too compelling a mystery to invest your time in for such a terribly misguided denouement.
Curious.......2007-09-07
I really enjoyed "The Book Thief" by Zusak. I was curious about this "I am the Messenger" and really enjoyed it. I am always pleased to see that an author is diverse and not writing the same book over again. I am not sure why his books are classified as YA. There is a lot of sex in "Messenger" for a 9th grader. I like his style and ability to insert prose.
I thought is was a good ending - one to discuss with others.

The gold standard for muslim conduct.......2002-09-26
In the end, revelation is judged not by appointed deities but by the bitter acceptance of mass effect. This book challenged the notion of claimed divinity with no visible fruit as vain repetition of ancient doctrine. It is indeed funny how those who disagree with Messenger Muhammad's little booklet attack not the fruit of his revelation, but the way and environment in which it was delivered. "There is much I could tell you, but, you cannot bear it now, but..." The preceeding quote is scripture, those with superiour 'intellect' could attack it's essence or origin, but oh, the many souls it saved, and-with but a solemn, sincere promise: better times ahead, for those who believe. Now, the root of this book deals with revelation. Do I believe it? It does not matter. Has it changed lives? ...Yes. Do I dispise this affect on human life? No. In this book Messenger Muhammad demands that his followers carry no weapon, not even a pen knife. Good teaching for today's climate, no doubt. He says be clean inward and out. Given, the Messenger's teaching was specifically targeted to African-Americans, given the cuurent state of affairs between Whites and Blacks in America and the World, what better foundation for us to stand on than these basic teachings? You say, "He called White people devils!" I say White people are in the best position to defend this statement, seeing that they have built much, and possess much in material and political power, it is not hateful to let them defend themselves as we have worked to show our worth in spite of hurtful speech. In the end, the bitter pill for both (Black and White) to swallow is not who hurled the most spiteful names, but who took up the banner of sober, responsible behaiviour and worked to make this nation a better place for our children.
dishonorable elijah muhammed: not a muslim.......2002-05-20
this is just a warning to those who might be led astray. elijah muhammed is in no way a muslim and has no connection whatsoever, barring terminology, to islam. in fact, according to the Qur'an and true muslims, (ie. the people who have professed islam for 1400 years, as opposed to elijah muhammed who boldly stole the name for his own purposes less than 100 years ago) by claiming that wd fard, a raincoat salesman from detroit in the early twentieth century was Allah, the creator and ruler of all that exists, seen and unseen, elijah muhhamed (and fard) committed the only sin not forgivable by the All-Merciful: setting up others beside Him, or as equal to Him. an interesting side note is that wd fard was not even original enough to create the forgery himself but stole even the idea of subverting the terms of islam from the noble drew ali.
secondly, elijah muhhamed preached seperatism and was a racist. whatever the reason or value of his opinions and ideas, these are not the same or even similar to those of islam, which teaches unity and racial equality. true islam has nothing to do with race, as the qu'ran and hadith say nothing even remotely similar to what elijah muhammed claims.
one must wonder why elijah muhammed was so determined to steal from and malign islam? it is competely absurd, as well as sinful to claim Allah was a raincoat salesman in Detroit and just ignorant to say elijah muhhamed "makes quick work of the eastern muslims". it is disrespectful and dishonorable for elijah muhammed to call himself a muslim when his beliefs are completely contradictory to those of islam, as malcolm x discovered. it would seem that elijah muhhamed harbored a great hatred for islam/muslims and thus attempted to subvert the true teachings. i would have given this book zero stars were i able, except perhaps as a curiousity of american and african-american history.
Short And Sweet But To The Point And Full Of Truth.......2001-11-18
The Honorable Elijah Muhammad in this short speech explains who he is, his mission and his responsibilities. He makes quick work of the Eastern Muslims who want to cast doubt as to his Messengership. He shows the Eastern Muslims to be complete hypocrites in condemning him but yet seeking friendships in America with the very infidels that their Holy Qu'ran condemns while failing to do Islamic missionary work amongst the people in America who need it the most. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad then explains what his divine role is and to whom he was sent. This book provides a very good and quick overview of the Islamic missionary work conducted by the Elijah Muhammad.

Book Description
This systematic and self-contained treatment of the theory of three-dimensional spinors and their applications fills an important gap in the literature. Without using the customary Clifford algebras frequently studied in connection with the representations of orthogonal groups, spinors are developed in this work for three-dimensional spaces in a language analogous to the spinor formalism used in relativistic spacetime.
Unique features of this work:
* Systematic, coherent exposition throughout
* Introductory treatment of spinors, requiring no previous knowledge of spinors or advanced knowledge of Lie groups
* Three chapters devoted to the definition, properties and applications of spin-weighted functions, with all background given.
* Detailed treatment of spin-weighted spherical harmonics, properties and many applications, with examples from electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, and relativity
* Wide range of topics, including the algebraic classification of spinors, conformal rescalings, connections with torsion and Cartan's structural equations in spinor form, spin weight, spin-weighted operators and the geometrical meaning of the Ricci rotation coefficients
* Bibliography and index
This work will serve graduate students and researchers in mathematics and mathematical and theoretical physics; it is suitable as a course or seminar text, as a reference text, and may also be used for self-study.

Customer Reviews:
Very Good.......2005-04-22
I knew Gene Wentz as I was going through all four years of high school, and he is really nice, honest, and thoughtful person (so is his family). He wanted to sign my book for me because I was a family friend. This book is a wonderful recolection of his tour in Vietnam. This is HIS story of things no one will ever see or hear about otherwise. Once you pick it up, you'll never want to set it down. A must-read for any military fanatic or history buff.
The True Gene Wentz.......2004-06-23
I have had the pleasure of knowing Gene wents for nearly half my young life. He has coached several of my teams and I have had many discussions with him. he is a great human being and a even greater CHristian, unlike some descriptions. he truely is the bravest man I have ever met. I am very proud to call him a friend. I also am an aspiring writer and am inspired by his book/
This book helps the reader to "be there.".......2004-06-11
Only those who experience the life style of elite fighting men and women truly know what happens in the hell holes of war. This book, written by a Navy SEAL, shows the darkest battles that are not fought in the newspapers, television, or other communication media.
War is not "pretty," it is filled with subterfuge in order to win. Many people are offended by what must be done to protect freedom, but they are generally the ones who have never been on the front lines.
This scenario is real. If you want to know even a little of what really happens in war, then this is a good example. If you want the political gloss, watch TV.
I give it five stars. I've been there.
Gene Wentz- A Real Seal.......2003-09-21
My first statement is that this book is one of the best War novels ever written. I would gladly read another novel by Mr. Wentz. I would also like to say that Gene Wentz was a real navy SEAL (believe it or not)! His book is a great one. I could smell, taste, and invision every single moment of this book. It is the most dicriptive book yet it isn't boring so it keeps your attention the whole time. If you even only kinda like war novels Buy This One!
Note: Stephin King actually asked Mr. Wentz to make this book into a film but Gene turned it down because Mr. King wanted it to be Rambo style and Gene wanted to respect the men he fought besides! What a crazy guy!
Great Book.......2002-02-22
This book was great, and well worth my money. A few words to Ms (Hell) Angel from same state. From my knowledge this man was a SEAL, and tell me, who the hell writes a book about SEALs when he wasn't? You're just another damn pot smoaking hippie.-Nate
Book Description
The new Jewish spirituality lies somewhere between God's elusive presence in our world and our search for authentic language to describe it.
Rabbi Arthur Green leads us on a journey of discovery to seek God, the world, and ourselves. One of the most influential Jewish thinkers of our time, Green has created a roadmap of meaning for our lives in the light of Jewish mysticism, using the Hebrew letters that make up the divine name:
Yod--Reality at the beginning. God as the oneness of being at the outset, before it unfolds into our universe. Heh--Creation and God's presence in the world. A renewed faith in God as Creator has powerful implications for us today. Vav--Revelation, the central faith claim of Judaism and the claim it makes on our lives. Heh--Redemption and our return to God through the life of Torah and by participating in the ongoing repair of the world.
A personal and honest framework of understanding for the seeker, this revised and updated edition of a classic sheds new light on our search for the divine presence in our everyday lives.
Customer Reviews:
Concise and solid.......2004-05-10
Arthur Green is one of my favorite leaders in Kabalah. His books are based on traditional mysticism, not a New Age Quick Fix Self-Help type of Judaism. I found this book appealing because each chapter is very short, dealing with one, simple idea that is not dependent on previous chapters. It's a great book to read at bedtime; a brief essay, written clearly that opens your mind to many "ah-ha" moments. Great choice for all levels interested in Kabalah.
A book which makes Judaism more meaningful to everyone........1999-12-20
Rabbi Green, in quite a skillful way, directs the reader to an aspect of Judaism not adequately addressed by other authors. He "introduces" a monistic overview which makes one feel one with all. It is easy reading and very useful to one's path. I have been fortunate to hear him in person and highly recommend his works and especially this book. Rabbi Green does his part in bringing spirituality back to Judaism.

Book Description
1929. This book is a translation from the German edition of Das Ewige Antlitz. Death masks command our utmost reverence, for the face is symbolic and perpetuates the final impression of a human spirit whom we once knew, or who had made his mark on all men's minds. This work endeavors to assemble and collate material from the widest possible field. As the reader glances through the illustrations, he will at once notice a limitation. There is no mask dating from antiquity and the question of the use of death masks in those ages is not dealt with. The material as such obliged the author to adopt this restriction in order to confine the subject within some bounds. Therefore it only embraces the Christian culture of the West and of that period, only from about 1400 up to the present day.
Book Description
Meyrink's second, and most mystical, novel from 1916: this is the first time this Dedalus edition has been available in North America. Published in Germany to critical and commercial acclaim, it is set in Amsterdam, used as a symbol of European decadence: the city is ultimately destroyed. The Green Face has classic Meyrink features: * a mystical wedding * a galaxy of grotesque characters * the haunting atmosphere of the ghetto In an Amsterdam that very much resembles the Prague of The Golem, a stranger, Hauberisser, enters by chance a magician's shop. The name on the shop, he believes, is Chidher Green; inside, among several strange customers, he hears an old man, who says his name is Green, explain that, like the Wandering Jew, he has been on earth ""ever since the moon has been circling the heaven."" When Hauberisser catches sight of the old man's face, it makes him sick with horror, haunting him. The rest of the novel chronicles Hauberisser's quest for the elusive and horrible old man.

see for yourself.......2007-05-14
Disregard what everyone says of this book. Discregard the Golem, the Angel, and any other work you may wish to set this one besides in comparison. Read it, as an individual piece, and take from it what you will. You'll know whether you have gotten the message or not when youre through...trust me. Take the time, read this book - it's worth it.
golem is better.......2007-01-04
i wasnt able to appreciate this one as much as the golem. the atmospheric horror and alchemical philosophy isnt as well executed and the dated racist attitudes are distracting. there is some whimsy in the opening scenes that is unexpected and fun.
Foretelling the future.......2005-03-29
I have not finished the book yet, but think it is a wonderful evocation of the sense of madness and horror after the war. But, can anyone explain how, if really published in 1916, he is able to discuss the end of the war (which I am sure he mentions as being of 4 years' duration)?
Great literary symbolism.......2005-01-29
What I've always enjoyed most in both poetry and prose, is when a writer utilizes constellations of mythological currents and symbols and their interconnections in an effective manner, giving the work the timeless quality of myth itself. This is particularly good if the writer is trying to put forth some kind of esoteric or philosophical idea, and I try to do this in my own writing. Generally speaking I tend to not enjoy these sorts of occultish novels from the late 19th and early 20th centuries even though I am an occultist, because they seem to lack artistic merit and instead have a tendency to act as a soapbox for indoctrination into some esoteric philosophy. Meyrink has not done this, at least in this novel, but has created a real work of art that is also a real page turner which will really pull you into it. It is also clear that the knowledge of various myths and folklore he drew upon in creating this novel was extensive, which is what makes it good.
one of the best esoteric novels.......2004-11-30
"Gustav Meyrink is one of the greatest european mystiques (magicians/yogis) of 20th century". This said another yogi par exellence... His books are not symbolical...
