      Book Description

Bob Schwartz reminds us of the necessity, no matter how harried or confusing things are, to appreciate the humor in the day-to-day nature of family life. Bob gives parents a reason to laugh as he navigates the unexpected twists and turns of parenthood every mom and dad has experienced — such as that feeling of panic when you hear the toilet being flushed and immediately followed by your child's less than reassuring yell of "Uh-oh!" Or the admonition to your five-year-old of, "No, you can't have the leftover cotton candy for breakfast, even if you do pour milk over it."

Perhaps parents also need the reassurance that Bob offers. In looking back on his initial years of parenthood, Bob writes, "There was one word that sprang to mind — Naïve. That's French for `Buddy, you don't even have a clue.' " If you, like Bob, are entirely clueless at the beginning of parenthood, there's hope for the future.

For while imparting crucial information to his children like "the shower curtain goes inside the bathtub; don't put marbles into the garbage disposal, and it's not a great idea to see how many peas you can stick up your nose," Bob did learn things like how to navigate the challenging world of school carpool pickup without infuriating the power hungry fifth grade Safety Patrol. And you, like Bob, might also make some headway with the linguistic parental challenge of cracking the grunt communication code of teenagers. Bob Schwartz tackles these problems and more. He tells us that the purpose of his essays is to have us embrace the humor of parenthood and the fun of family life. "Let laughter be the fuel for this thrilling, and yes indeed, sometimes pandemonium-producing journey."

Bob Schwartz book is a delight. A joy to read and lots to laugh about. For more short easy-to-read family-related humor check out ParentLaughs: Quips, Quotes, and Anecdotes about Raising Kids. (also available on Amazon.)

4 out of 5 stars Don't put marbles down the garbage disposal.......2006-01-31

"Don't put marbles down the garbage disposal" and "the shower curtain goes INSIDE the tub" are just two pieces of advice author Bob Schwartz has to teach his kids. If this resonates with you (you, there, fishing the peanut butter and marshmallow fluff sandwich out of the VCR) then this book is for you. The book is a combination humor and parental guidance, mainly reminding parents that children are, well, children. They aren't perfect, they don't reason well and well, *$%@ happens.

Bob's writing is like listening to a friend talk. His family has the same wacky traditions you find in any family-such as "Trombone Standard Time" (an incredibly accelerated time warp characterized by a half an hour of trombone practice that actually takes up only seconds in Standard Time.)

My favorite section is about how the two families (his and his wife's) celebrate Thanksgiving differently. Bob's family serves traditional foods, nothing more exciting than green peas on a plate. When, relates Schwartz, diced carrots were added one holiday to the peas, a family meeting had to be hurriedly arranged to vote on this new and strange addition. By contrast, his wife's family celebrates the holiday with ear-splitting karaoke, wild jello salads, jalapeno quiche and an uncle's rendition of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" (one can only imagine this scene in one's head. Schwartz gives the barest of descriptions, I feel, because words fail him here!)

The book is something that most families will enjoy, and will give examples of child behavior and how to handle it with grace and humor that probably will serve to destress the harried parent. Fun book.

5 out of 5 stars The gentle humor of Bob Schwartz's observations on family life.......2005-12-03

For me the funniest thing I have ever read about becoming a parent was Dave Barry's infamous column on the birth of a child and that special moment when the doctor asks the new father if he would like to view the placenta (Barry suggests that particular experience is something that should be tacked on to criminal penalties). I bring that up that particular comedic reference point because the humor you will find in Bob Schwartz's "Would Somebody Please Send Me to My Room! A Hilarious Look at Family Life" is not like that. This is a kindly, gentler look at the "joys" of parenthood and of adults attempting to co-exist in a household with adolescents, at which point the notion of parenthood no longer seems to be an accurate description of what is going on.

In other words, ultimately the humor here comes more from Schwartz's observations than his jokes. These pieces have been collected from various magazines and newspapers. They are devoted to subjects from eternal concerns such as babies crying ("In the Shrill of the Night") to 21st century concerns such as the Harry Potter books ("The Sorcerer's Stone and My Cover Is Blown"). The pieces are arranged thematically with half of an eye towards the chronological experiences of raising children, so we begin with "'That's the Crib Post Up Ahead, Your Next Stop--The "Newborn Zone!"'" (I think I got the quote marks right on that one) and end in the vicinity of "Tag Teaming Family Life," which involves things like music clubs, food warehouses, and changing the diaper on the newest family arrival. So you can see that this one rally is all about the kids, no matter how much parents want to try and move the agenda to other subjects.

You want to go through these pieces one or two at a time. "Would Somebody Please Send Me to My Room!" is one of those books that probably works best sitting on your nightstand so that you can read a chapter or two each night as a reminder that you really did plan on having children taking over your entire life. You are not the only one who does not remember how to do Algebra, has to clear a driveway of snow over and over again during winter, and who is seriously being dated by their music (and not in a good way). This book reminds you that you are not alone and that most of the time laughing is the superior option to crying. If you know a beleaguered parent or two (they tend to come in pairs when found in nature), then this could be an appropriate Christmas present.

I ended up rounding up on this one because of the illustrations by B.K. Taylor. All too often the illustrations in such books end up being rather inconsequential to the proceedings, but that is not the case her. My favorite (82) shows a smiling father comforting his crying daughter over the horrifically mislaid eye thingamajig of her favorite doll, but I also like the father and son confronting the wall of blue jeans (152), the Halloween candy thief (250), and, of course, Freud at the marshmallow roast (258). I also appreciate the fact that Taylor does a drawing for every single one of these 49 pieces, because on some of these there is no obvious visual joke to draw up.

      5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Humor!!!.......2005-09-01

Truly brilliant humor!! It doesn't matter whether you have children or not, this book will have you laughing from the beginning to the end. It's truly a must read book.

I have found that a quick fix to relieveing stress or if I just need to laugh out loud is to pick up Bob Schwartz' book and start reading --what a difference it makes... really, just ask my kids (or co-workers)!!

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-09-01

Very funny - been there, done that and it's ok. Get this for all of your friends!

        Book Description

Judy Short had a root canal in the morning and learned that afternoon that she had flunked her mammogram. She describes it as "Quite possibly one of the worst days of my life."

Everyone wants to meet Judy's Killer Bunny (K.B.)! He is the visualization aid that she used to help in her battle with breast cancer. Judy envisioned that her white blood cells were Killer Bunnies, attacking and eating the cancer cells. Then, since they were rabbits, they reproduced quickly¡ªwhich is the goal for the body's immune system, for white cells to reproduce and effectively fight off disease. Judy's visualization took physical form as you can see from the cover photo.

This isn't just another woman's story about breast cancer¡ªit is about hoping and coping and maintaining a positive outlook and sense of humor throughout the experience.

Judy shares the practical insights she learned during her mastectomy, breast reconstruction and chemotherapy. She frankly addresses the gambit of emotions from anger and fear to hope and defiance.

More than 185,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year¡ªthat is one in eight. This book is for them and for all cancer patients, eir families and their friends.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars K.B. & Me: A Great Resource.......2001-06-14

K.B.& Me is a great and unique addition to the body of cancer-coping literature out there. Judith Short writes an excellent and frank first-person account of her experiences with breast cancer.

This book is a true heart-warmer as you learn how a stuffed bunny or "Killer Bunny" (nick-named "K.B.") comes to her rescue, destroying cancer cells so her body will produce the white blood cells she needs to help fight the disease that plagues tens of thousands of women each year.

Through her personal account, Short shares lessons on how to overcome this disease from physical, mental and emotional standpoints. Her honesty is truly appreciated as she guides the reader through her personal journey.

Though her experiences are personal, they are still seasoned with insight and lessons that anyone who has dealt with this disease - either as a patient or as a family member or friend of the patient - can appreciate.

Perhaps the most intriguing part of the book is Short's firm insistence and belief in the "patient-active" concept promoted in the book. That is, the patient must take charge of her own healthcare and don't treat doctors as if they are God - because they are not.

Another major plus to the book is that proceeds from it will be donated to cancer-related organizations and causes. This is definitely a book that you'll pull out again and again if you or someone you love is dealing with cancer and are looking for inspiration on how they can get through this illness.

Short's style of writing invokes such a personal connection that you get a sense that she is your personal cheerleader, cheering you on and giving you hope.

4 out of 5 stars The Bunny With an Attitude.......2001-05-23

You know you're having a bad day when you return home from a root canal and get a phone message saying you flunked your mammogram. This happened to Judith trotter Short. She shares her story in "K.B. and Me."

The abnormal mammogram led to further testing, which led to a breast cancer diagnosis. Short candidly describes her emotions, reactions and experiences before, during and after treatment.

K.B. stands for "Killer Bunny." K.B. is a sweet stuffed rabbit toy with fake plastic fangs glued to its mouth. Short used this toy as a visual aid and motivational tool in her fight against the disease.

She imagined that her white cells were white killer bunnies. She visualized that these bunnies would hop throughout her body, munching away at the cancer cells. She further noted that since her white blood cells were rabbits, they would reproduce quickly. This is the ultimate goal in cancer treatment, and Short used her imagination to rebuild her own immune system.

Before long, K.B. achieved notoriety as a cancer-fighting mascot. Even medical personnel were touched and amused by K.B.'s indirect healing power. Besides being a visual aid, K.B. was a physical object of comfort that accompanied the author through surgery, chemotherapy and recovery.

"K.B. and Me" is a short read. Though 85 pages in length, this slim book covers many topics within the subject of breast cancer. On top of her own feelings, Short describes the reactions of others and how she dealt with them.

The tone of the book is uplifting. The wording makes the reader feel as though she is having conversation over coffee with a friend, rather than reading the words of a published author. I think that very characteristic justifies that the book should be read by all who are directly or indirectly affected by the disease.

This is by no means a work of breast cancer research. The author offers no medical references or treatment preferences. The book's value rests in its record of how one woman conquered breast cancer. Short faced to disease with humor and a fighting attitude. She published her story hoping it would help others as well.

My first reaction, upon reading the cover of the book, was that this woman was crazy. A cancer-fighting bunny? Then I began to think of what my own reaction would be I ever face the same diagnosis. Humor and inner strength would be part of my plan of attack as well. Judith Short isn't crazy. She's an inspiration.

I do recommend "K.B. and Me" as part of any personal cancer information library. The book is not a substitute for education on the subject. However, Short's poignant, courageous tale can assist other victims in their treatments.

As I mentioned before, this is a short book. If you ever find yourself buying a pile of books on the subject of breast cancer, slip this slim volume on the purchasing stack, too. The other books will provide some education on the disease. "K.B. and Me" will provide the support, humor and guidance that are needed as well.

5 out of 5 stars Adventures with the Pirates of Faerun!.......2004-07-08

Pirates of the Fallen Stars, has to be one of the BEST Forgotten Realms accessories ever made, together with Old Empires, Dreams of Red Wizards and Moonsea! It sheds light on the exotic and yet dangerous pirates that inhabitant the large body of water found in the heart of Faerun called the Sea of Fallen Stars. If you are planning naval expeditions, wish to discover the unknown, take part in underwater adventures, fight against pirates or rescue a damsel- or an artifact, for that matter- in distress, then this accessory will win you over for sure!
I have had endless hours of gaming enjoyment playing on material presented within the pages of the Pirates of the Fallen Stars accessory! The Sea of Fallen Stars' location is such that allows access to many lands that border the sea, such as, Aglarond, Chessenta, Cormyr, the Moonsea region Mulhorand, Sembia, Tantras, Thay, Unther, Westgate and so many others; adventure awaits!!!
Ranging from background history, to island and ship descriptions, to important people and characters, to the respective gods and encounter tables, to adventure hooks and actual adventures, to magical items and artifacts, to new spells and monsters, this accessory has it all and more.
For other FR references/adventures, I STRONGLY recommend: the Old Empires accessory on Chessenta, Mulhorand, and Unther, the Moonsea accessory, the Dreams of Red Wizards accessory on Thay, the Ruins of Myth Drannor Box Set, and the Ruins of Zhentil Keep Box Set (they are Second Edition AD&D, out of print and it will take a bit of searching, but it's well worth it). For updated editions of events see, the Third Edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, which even though is quite expensive, is still very useful to all FR fans!
In short, if you truly love Pirates and naval battles, try and get your hands on a copy of Pirates of the Fallen Stars. You will not regret it! Trust me!

4 out of 5 stars To explore shores never explored before.......2000-09-03

This 128 page sourcebook features a good mix of information to create adventures (or perhaps a campaign) based on the Seas of the Fallen Stars. It would be a good sourcebook, for either a newbie to D&D, or even an expert. It includes new spells, new kits, recommendation of Non-Weapon Proficiencies, magical items, description of the area around the Inner Sea, and other areas, NPCs, an adventure, Ship descriptions, and new rules. What more could one ask for?

If you want to buy this book for ship description only, then I'd recommend 'Of Ships and the Sea' instead. But if you want a sourcebook that gives information enough to create a campaign, then this isn't a bad sourcebook at all! But of course, you should enjoy adventures on the sea, that's where the true fun in this product lies!

Who hasn't wanted to be a pirate? Even better, how would you like to be a dashing corsair in a world where dragons are as real as doubloons? If your idea of swashbuckling adventure includes swinging leaps through the rigging of a flaming warship, sparking blades singing over spilled rum and screaming prisoners, broadsides of flame, ice, acid, and worse, and wondrous islands filled with dark mystery and magical danger, you will love this supplement! Features include details on the piratical life and their vengeful code of honor, creating pirate characters, the infamous Pirate Isles, a Rogue's Gallery of notorious ne'er-do-wells, the tall ships of the Sea of Fallen Stars, movement and combat at sea, an adventure, a great slice of pirate speak, and more! Sails high...

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Accurate Vision of Managing a Design Business.......2007-06-18

Suzanne DeWalt really hits some key elements regarding running a home-based design business. For example, her advice regarding setting up an agreement before giving the client all your ideas is very good advice. True, she does emphasize window treatments as being your entrance into the clients home and that may not apply to every designer. So I took off one star. But the honest and practical advice she gives is well worth the price of the book. You can't just be "creative" you have to run a professional firm. As I am the owner of a seven-year old design firm, I say she is accurate on her advice.

1 out of 5 stars how to start a home drapery business.......2003-08-08

i definitely agree with the other comment that it's all about window coverings. interior design is not all about window treatments and trying to sell products to your clients. interior design is about designing the homes of your clients. definitely a misleading book.

5 out of 5 stars This book gave me the courage!.......2002-08-27

This is exactly the book I've been looking for. I completed my degree, but still felt
that I needed some "real world" guidance. This book did that. The author explained
the how to things that I couldn't figure out, like where to find the business, how to
estimate jobs, where to buy the stuff, etc. I love this book!

                        4 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2002-03-02

I thought this book was excellent! I read it completely in 2 days! I am just considering starting my own business and I appreciated Suzanne sharing such valuable infomation. I don't think a designer "in the business" would share any of this information with you. I would recommend it to anyone just starting out in the business.

1 out of 5 stars Should be called "How to Start a Drapery Business".......2000-01-17

The title is truly misleading. The authors "Interior Design" Business is a window covering business. She sells window coverings, flooring and wallcoverings but is apparantly not a designer. Don't expect any in depth advice on working with clients creating integrated room plans, using trade-only showrooms etc. If you want to focus on one aspect of the business, simply selling floor or window coverings, great. But, I feel cheated even though this book was inexpensive
