Customer Reviews:
Very nice!.......2003-10-15
I'm not an expert who is able to critique this book indepth, but I've found this to be helpful. It may have some flaws, but I think it makes a wonderful addition to any amateur Ontario herpetologist's library.
Useful pocket guide that lacks some detail.......2002-09-19
Ontarians have not had a field guide to their reptiles and amphibians since Bob Johnson's Familiar Reptiles and Amphibians of Ontario (1989). Whereas Johnson's little book was illustrated with black-and-white sketches that may or may not have resembled the actual animal in question, this new pocket guide is a showcase for excellent herp photography, giving each species native to Ontario three full-colour photographs on the facing page of each written description.
It's important to remember that this is a field guide, focused on the identification of wildlife in the field, and as such is not terribly in-depth -- after all, it's supposed to fit in your pocket! Each species is limited to a page of description and a page of photographs, a format which, for the most part, works rather well. Information is basic (identification, habitat, diet, reproduction), concise and, for the most part, accurate.
But brevity can be risky, and errors can sometimes creep in. ...
Common names definitely suffer from the focus on the species level, as "Eastern Racer" and "Eastern Ratsnake" are used, rather than the more commonly used subspecies names of "Blue Racer" and "Black Rat Snake". ...
In spite of the real space limitations, I would have liked to have seen descriptions of frog and toad calls and of amphibian eggs, which are dealt with only occasionally (larvae and tadpoles are well represented in the photographs).
Those wanting to learn more about our native herpetofauna would do well to consult the excellent Amphibians and Reptiles of the Great Lakes Region by James H. Harding (1997). But, since that book is too large to tuck into your bag or pocket, grab this little book instead if you're heading out into the field and need to know what it is you've just found.

croatia.......2004-02-20
We used this book on a visit to Croatia last autumn and liked it a lot - the hotels and restuarants mentioned rated highly, without being typically touristy. For a quick visit to Croatia it makes a pefect introduction. For more extensive travel you may want to use it in combination with a more extensive guide.
A rock is better.......2002-11-23
I purchased 3 guide books on Croatia this one is the poorest excuse for a guide book that I have seen. the second was not much better. The best one hands down is Croatia by Rough Guides

Book Description
Sofia comes from a family of storytellers. Here are her tales of growing up in the barrio in McAllen, Texas, full of the magic and mystery of family traditions: making Easter cascarones, celebrating el Dia de los Muertos, preparing for quinceañera, rejoicing in the Christmas nacimiento, and curing homesickness by eating the tequila worm. When Sofia is singled out to receive a scholarship to boarding school, she longs to explore life beyond the barrio, even though it means leaving her family to navigate a strange world of rich, privileged kids. It’s a different mundo, but one where Sofia’s traditions take on new meaning and illuminate her path.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2007-06-15
This is one of the best books I have read in quite some time. Having grown up in South Texas, I had many Mexican-American friends and I can relate to many of the stories told in this book.
Sofia is coming of age in a very traditional Mexican-American family. The reader will learn about many of these traditions, such as the quinceanera, comadres, cascarones, canicula, and the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos).
This is a very heartwarming book that anyone would enjoy reading.
A lesson in being a good comadre.......2006-05-05
Sofia, a Mexican-American girl from the Rio Grande Valley town of McAllen, Texas, studies while her best friend dreams of her quinceanera. To achieve her dream of attending the private academy that has awarded her a scholarship, Sofia needs $400, five new dresses, and her mother's permission. Although each of these tasks seem individually insoluble to her, through their accomplishment, she learns the value of having good comadres-and being one.
The reader will follow the story of a young Sofia and cousin Berta from first communion, to Day of the Dead celebrations, and finally to Berta's quinceanera, after which Sofia exits for her private school and new experiences there. The charm, though is in the details of the quiet moments depicted with Sofia's family--telling stories from the storyteller's bag, cleaning pinto beans, and discussing the problems of the day at the sobremesa-and the excellent characterization. The reader can't help but smile at Tia Petra and her penchant for plastic, or at Sofia's bafflement of Berta's newfound enjoyment of sappy charro movies, but mild amusement is not the only emotion that will be provoked during the course of this read. Tequila Worm touches on the reality of death at various points of the story at different levels of reaction, and the reader should not be surprised to learn that this is a build-up to the climax and greatest lesson of the novel as a whole.
The loosely woven chapters of The Tequila Worm are chronological, but can stand alone with their individual lessons of life with family and friends in the small Texas town of McAllen. Canales shows off excellent story-telling skills in this almost-autobiography. Sofia and the other characters feel authentic, and fresh, presenting a neighborhood life that may rarely exist outside of fiction for many of the target audience of grades six to nine. Although holding special appeal for readers of Mexican-American descent, this book has the capacity to entertain and teach a lesson in understanding one's own self to many readers, regardless of their previous experience with Mexican traditions.
Welcome to Sofia's World.......2006-01-21
This relentlessly charming first-person novel brings readers into the tightly woven fabric of life in the Tejana world, full of celebrations and food, full of joy and delight. Great writing with a consistently authentic voice of the hopeful teenage heroine.
Young adult literature at its best.......2005-12-08
This charming novel by Stanford author Viola Canales is a book of stories about a family, a culture and a young girl who is smart enough to appreciate the richness of where she came from when she eventually goes away. In her barrio, Sofia is surrounded by a loving family and a community steeped in tradition. Though she does not want a quinceanera herself, she serves as the dama de honor for her cousin and best friend, Berta, when Berta turns 15. What Sofia really wants is to accept the scholarship she won to an Episcopal boarding school in Austin, 350 miles away. But to do that she needs her parents' permission, five decent dresses, and 400 dollars - each a seemingly insurmountable task. Readers will enjoy following Sofia along the way toward reaching her goal, and the culture shock that greets her at Saint Luke's. She also undoubtedly shocks some of her classmates when she and two friends take her papa's "definitive cure for homesickness": chewing and swallowing a squishy tequila worm. Sometimes humorous and always thoughtful, Canales has taken her own experience and expertly universalized it. Look to The Tequila Worm for a shining example of young adult literature at its best. (Review originally appeared in the Palo Alto Weekly.)
Tequila never tasted so good!.......2005-10-14
A fun and interesting account of gir's life growing up in the Rio Grande Valley. Viola's experiences remind me of my life in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. All her short stories have an interesting tale to tell.
Book Description
This entertaining travelogue delves into the locales, festivities, and history related to Mexico's most famous libations. Each of the chapters focuses on a specific beverage as well as the region of the country most closely associated with that particular drink as seen through the eyes of a U.S. couple. The authors describe a wealth of interesting characters as they travel the country to unearth the traditions and unique culture associated with each drink and its corresponding location.
Customer Reviews:
An inspired blend of travelogue and cultural insight makes for lively reading indeed.......2006-03-03
Liquid Mexico: Festive Spirits, Tequila Culture, & The Infamous Worm is a 'must' for any who love Mexico: it examines the locales, festivities and history surrounding Mexican drinks, using specific beverage as cultural indicators for exploring Mexican heritage. Chapters blend in the authors' travel experiences throughout Mexico in chapters which range from 'Margarita' and 'Beers' to 'Sangrita'. An inspired blend of travelogue and cultural insight makes for lively reading indeed.
Entertaining..........2006-01-07
I was impressed by the numerous bibliographical references at the end of each chapter. I was expecting a simple book on drinking and traveling, but obviously a lot of serious research went into this book. Great reading for the beach or library.
Mexico Traveler's Treasure!.......2005-12-17
This is a great book. Even though it's about alcohol, it's not really about drinking. It's way more about the history and culture that surrounds the drinks. If you like Mexico, even if you're a teetotaler, you'll like this book.
Fun (and useful) Book!.......2005-12-15
This couple went on some fun adventures in Mexico, did some great research on the history of the drinks mentioned in the book (tequila, mezcal, margaritas, Corona, etc), and put it together in a highly entertaining format. I think any arm chair traveler would get a kick out of reading this -- I did.

Customer Reviews:
Modern Practice of GC.......2007-09-21
This book is an excelent reference source for all aspects of modern GC analysis. It covers topics in great depth but is still easy to read for less expirienced chromatographers. The important parameters are covered in depth (column, optimization, inlet systems) providing enough information to solve most problems. The end of the book has several chapters on application specific techniques such as pharmaceutical or petrochemical analysis. You will probably learn more from this book then you would taking a short course on the subject, and the cost is much less.
Fantastic Resource.......2006-07-22
I work in an analytical lab and usually borrow my texts from the Univ. of WA library in Tacoma rather than have my corporation buy them. This text is easy to read and comprehensive. I showed it to our senior scientist asking if our company should buy this text instead of borrowing it. He looked through it and said yes, that it's always good to have good references.
Great reference book.......2001-04-15
One of the most useful reference book in gas chromatography. The book is written in a fashion that is easy to understand by novice and experienced chromatographers. Wonderful details about mechanism of separations, valuable information on flash vapourization process, and the utilities of the various detectors. All in all, a must have book for those who seriously like to be good in gas chromatography
Excellent in-depth source for chromatographers.......1997-07-31
This book is comprehensive and comprehensible. The information presented is quite current. An excellent job was done updating for the latest edition. The references listed appear thorough, allowing for further investigation of a particular subject of interest. Good balance of theoretical explanation, and also inclusion of commercially available technology. Highly recommended

Customer Reviews:
Great static headspace reference book.......2000-11-14
Substantially revised, this book is definitely a must have for chromatographers who practice static (and even dynamic) headspace technique. All key aspects and factors influencing headspace were thoroughly discussed. Strategies in gaining sensitivity and selectivity were proposed - heat, mechanical shaking, sonication, addition of various salts to name a few. All in all, a great book to keep for reference

Book Description
This book deals with analytic problems related to some developments and generalizations of the Boltzmann equation toward the modeling and qualitative analysis of large systems that are of interest in applied sciences. These generalizations are documented in the various surveys edited by Bellomo and Pulvirenti with reference to models of granular media, traffic flow, mathematical biology, communication networks, and coagulation models.
The above literature motivates applied mathematicians to study the Cauchy problem and to develop an asymptotic analysis for models regarded as developments of the Boltzmann equation. This book aims to initiate the research plan by the analyzing afore mentioned analysis problems.
The first generalization dealt with refers to the averaged Boltzmann equation, which is obtained by suitable averaging of the distribution function of the field particles into the action domain of the test particle. This model is further developed to describe equations with dissipative collisions and a class of models that are of interest in mathematical biology. In this latter case the state of the particles is defined not only by a mechanical variable but also by a biological microscopic state.
The book is essentially devoted to analytic aspects and deals with the analysis of the Cauchy problem and with the development of an asymptotic theory to obtain the macroscopic description from the mesoscopic one.

Book Description
Fairy tales, often said to be ''timeless'' and fundamentally ''oral,'' have a long written history. However, argues Elizabeth Wanning Harries in this provocative book, a vital part of this history has fallen by the wayside. The short, subtly didactic fairy tales of Charles Perrault and the Grimms have determined our notions about what fairy tales should be like. Harries argues that alongside these ''compact'' tales there exists another, ''complex'' tradition: tales written in France by the conteuses (storytelling women) in the 1690s and the late-twentieth-century tales by women writers that derive in part from this centuries-old tradition.
Grounded firmly in social history and set in lucid prose, Twice upon a Time refocuses the lens through which we look at fairy tales. The conteuses saw their tales as amusements for sophisticated adults in the salon, not for children. Self-referential, frequently parodic, and set in elaborate frames, their works often criticize the social expectations that determined the lives of women at the court of Louis XIV.
After examining the evolution of the ''Anglo-American'' fairy tale and its place in this variegated history, Harries devotes the rest of her book to recent women writers--A. S. Byatt, Anne Sexton, Angela Carter, and Emma Donoghue among them--who have returned to fairy-tale motifs so as to challenge modern-day gender expectations. Late-twentieth-century tales, like the conteuses', force us to rethink our conception of fairy tales and of their history.
