Rio Jones is the new girl at her school. As if that isn't hard enough, her mom is an ex almost-model and expects her daughter to be pretty and popular, and she's named after a Duran Duran song. Except that she is an art geek. On her first day, she meets kids from her art class that take her off campus for lunch (which isn't allowed). And she gets detention for it, so her mom tells her that she can't hang out with them anymore.

Rio is a geek, until she meets Kristi.

Kristi is a rich, beautiful, popular cheerleader. She and Rio become friends and in Kristi's group there are rules. You always have to smile even if you don't mean it and be nice to everyone. Kristi is the only one in the group who thinks that the rules don't apply to her because she's Kristi. Soon Rio becomes even more popular than Kristi is and, of course, Kristi is jealous. Not that she would ever tell anyone that. But there is one rule that her friends left out -- don't cross paths with Kristi. Rio's life soon goes back to worse than it was before she met Kristi, since even her art friends won't talk to her.

I am obsessed with this author! She is SO funny and all of her books are so realistic! As expected, another must read from Alyson Noel!

Art Geeks and Prom Queens was one of the greatest books i've ever read. It was tense that I couldn't put downt he book. I loved the teme of the book, jealousy. I loved it because that's what keeps me interested and motavated to keep on reading. I also liked how the characters were all snobby and high-class because I'm into like drama, high-class books.

One thing that could have made the book better would be another twist. Even though it had twists, one more twist could have improved the book better. Another thing that could have been better would have been to add more. For example what happened to Kristi?, Are Jas and Rio still a couple? or What happened to Mason, Jen and Kyla? That is what the book could have improved in.

If I was recommending this to an age level student, I would recommend it to 14-16 years olds. I think that's an age approiate level because in the books there is some inapproiate parts in the book that I don't think would be suitble for younger kids. I aslo think that teenagers would get a better understanding of the book because of the drama, jealously, everyday issues about school and peer pressure. I wouldn't recomend it to younger children because they might not like the kind of book this is, and how it talks about inapproiate gestures and it has cuss words in it. Also, you probably don't want younger children swearing because they would want to know where they got it from. Art Geeks and Prom Queens is a 240 page book and it would be hard to finish for them.

4 out of 5 stars "Heathers" for the new generation.......2006-09-29

This was an enjoyable read. It tells the story of Rio, who's named after a Duran Duran song. She lives with her former model mother and lawyer father in Laguna Beach, but misses New York and her friends there (they recently moved).

Rio makes a couple of friends from her art class in Laguna Beach, but then Kristi, cheerleader and queen bee, takes her under her wing. Suddenly, Rio has to follow rules...who to associate with, which boys to like, how to dress...or otherwise make Kristi mad. Everyone tiptoes around Kristi. But then, a fateful game of spin-the-bottle seals Rio's destiny. Kristi's not talking to her anymore, and she's turned the whole school against her.

This was an insightful look at high school cliques, the fear of those in power, and also just a fun bubbly read that made me remember being a teenager. The writing was pitch-perfect and really sounded like a young adult.

                  Book Description

The book is devoted to the perturbation analysis of matrix equations. The importance of perturbation analysis is that it gives a way to estimate the influence of measurement and/or parametric errors in mathematical models together with the rounding errors done in the computational process. The perturbation bounds may further be incorporated in accuracy estimates for the solution computed in finite arithmetic. This is necessary for the development of reliable computational methods, algorithms and software from the viewpoint of modern numerical analysis.

In this book a general perturbation theory for matrix algebraic equations is presented. Local and non-local perturbation bounds are derived for general types of matrix equations as well as for the most important equations arising in linear algebra and control theory. A large number of examples, tables and figures is included in order to illustrate the perturbation techniques and bounds.

                    Book Description

With his critically acclaimed first novel, Bittersweet, Freddie Lee Johnson III defied the stereotype that black men are willingly detached from their families. This debut also heralded the arrival of a powerful and passionate new voice in fiction. Now this talented author has written A Man Finds His Way, in which a college professor sets out to rebuild his world after a series of bitter blows and shattering events.

Lately, Professor Darius Collins’s life has been as tumultuous as the history he teaches in his university class. His girlfriend left him for another dude, his ex-wife’s screwing the mayor and going down in political flames along with him, and his son Jarrod has been accused of a vicious crime. And adding insult to the injury, several of his black colleagues are calling him an Uncle Tom for opposing a university visit by the controversial black activist and anti-semite Osmani Bornu.

But if history has taught Darius anything, it’s that bringing down one minority group at the expense of another is no solution–and he won’t be bullied into submission. Nor will he let the system take down yet another innocent black youth. But he’s got more than a small battle ahead of him, for his son Jarrod, he soon realizes, is a pawn in a dirty game of politics linked to his ex-wife. Can Darius fight the system and win–but even more importantly, can he salvage the spirit of the son who’s learning just what life can deal a black American man?

A gripping novel that plunges into the depths of conflicts within the black community and the system that fuels them, A Man Finds His Way brings home real issues under the guise of a genuinely heartfelt story: a family struggling to keep itself intact despite all that rails against it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book with great historical lessons.......2004-01-09

I stumbled upon this book while searching for some good reading material. And much to my surprise I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you're looking to read a sappy love story this isn't it. The author brought to life realistically the emotions of its main charcter (Darius) in his dealing with issues of love, relationships, children, family and racism. Not to mention the dynamite historical references throughout the book. I look forward to future books by Freddie Lee Johnson III.

                    4 out of 5 stars Like It A Lot.......2003-08-08

A good pass time book...took me a while to read it. Unlike Freddie Johnson other books I finish within 6 days max. Yet it's still good.

                    3 out of 5 stars Lackluster Reading.......2003-06-27

Let me start by saying I thoroughly enjoyed Bittersweet. I did not like A Man Finds His Way. First of all, this book was too long. It was over 340 pages. The first chapter was hilarious. But the excitement did not return until the last one hundred pages.

At the conclusion of the book, I was left wandering what happened with the Middle Passage club and the CBHS. Also, the book did not address whether Cookie felt remorseful about how her relationships impacted Jarrod's behavior.

                    3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2003-05-12

A man Finds His Way was a big disappointment to me.
While it was not my firstthought to read I bought it anyway
                    after hearing some interesting comments.

While I love the author's first book and gave it a raving 5*. I could not do the same for this one which disappointed me so.

It proved to be a very long read and it could hardly hold my attention at times. Just when I thought it was about to take off and get really interesting it disappointed me again.

It started off really well which was another reason I decided to go on and buy it.
The very most I can give the author is 2.8* which is streching it to be 3*.
I will however still be waiting for his next book becausre I do believe in him and hope it is a much better read.
This was a long and disappointing read as you might be able to tell by now.

Interesting to see how so many others rated it so highly. It might even be a better idea to wait for the tradesize for this one. IMO

                    5 out of 5 stars EXCEPTIONAL!.......2003-03-11

A Man Finds His Way is about Dr. Darius Collins a history professor who endures much in his plight for life. Dr. Collins is faced with a hurddle of obstacles. He is discarded by his girlfriend Marcy for another man, he's a dvorced father who must deal with his manipulative ex-wife Cookie, whose proclivities land under media scrutiny, he must deal with his incorrigible son Jarrod, who gets himself in a very tight fix, and he also must deal with students harrassing him as an Uncle Tom.

It's also unique to read a novel about an African American male who is positive in so many ways, for example he was a leader in the Warrior Passages program for youths, which prepared black males for adulthood. Also I relished in the absolute relationship Dr. Collins had with his mentor Rev. Boxwell and his friend Nash.

As with "Bittersweet", I enjoyed every aspect of A Man Finds His Way. This book was funny (especially the dating disasters and Player "the talking bird"), melancholy, encouraging, and most importantly has spiritual principles without being preachy or beating you over the head. I've taken the message of this book as being "FOOD FOR LIFE" not thought. I'm appreciative for Mr. Johnson's writing style, which has extended my vocabulary. It's evident in the writing that Mr. Johnson is a scholar, who happens to actually be a history professor.

This is a story of substance and should be read by those who appreciate a good quality read.

The Man Who Mistook His Job for a Life is a clever play on the title of an Oliver Sacks book from several years back in which the clinical neurologist and bestselling author poignantly describes 24 astonishing perceptual aberrations that cause victims to experience life in striking ways. Under this apt paraphrase, literary agent Jonathon Lazear describes how American males are increasingly finding their own perceptions altered as they subjugate their personal lives to their professional ones. Lazear candidly discloses how he once let his own work rule his existence, tracing a trajectory from a workaholic father through an early career in the time-demanding publishing industry and an eventual role as head of his own company. He tells how he became "stretched to the limit" while bringing home a seven-figure income--and, as a result, "emotionally distant" from the family he loved. He then offers a series of suggestions (i.e., Acknowledge That You're Not Perfect, Reset Your Work Clock, Start Small, Stay Positive) to help others similarly afflicted develop a more well-rounded presence. This is one of several recent books aimed at slowing society's hectic pace, although it may be the first aimed exclusively at men and the related gender-specific problems they face. --Howard Rothman

                    Book Description

At the end of the day, what really matters? Maybe it's been too long since you've asked yourself this question, because the workday is never-ending. You just don't have time. Indeed, if you're like Jonathon Lazear was for years, you don't seem to have time for much of anything besides work.

More recently, Lazear, a blindingly successful entrepreneur, found himself lost, burnt out, and wondering, not for the first time, why. But this time he did an extraordinary thing: rather than sweep these uncertainties under his desk and get right back to work, he made time to ask some of the biggest, most important questions a man can ask, questions he'd been avoiding since he started his career. What really matters? What are you afraid of? What are your other dreams? Who are you if you aren't your title and your paycheck? How much money is enough money? When was the last time you took a vacation and left work behind, disconnected from your cell phone, e-mail, pager, fax, and all the other toys that tell you you're important? Gave someone you love a gift that cost more time than money? What would you do on a Saturday if you weren't at the office -- or keeping tabs on work from home? How will you reconnect with your family -- and face the fact that you checked out on your wife and kids for far too long? Not only did Lazear confront these hard questions, but with probing insight and deep sensitivity, he found some answers and took them to heart. And he wrote it all up so you can, too. No excuses.

So meet The Man Who Mistook His Job for a Life. Short and to the point (because no one knows better than he how busy you are), thoughtful and wise, yet eminently practical, this book will remind you what really matters, help you give up what you don't need, and reclaim what you do.

Do you know what you're missing? If you stopped to look at this book, then at least somewhere deep down you probably do. Or if you don't know exactly what, at least you sense that you're missing something. Certainly, your family and friends miss you. It's time to go home.

How do you end the workday -- or do you?

"As a man who mistook his job for a life, I have coped by remaining aloof, even silent. I have been an emotional isolationist, fleeing a real and imagined ever-present jury -- my coworkers, my peers, my family, my wife, even my children. Sometimes I felt combative and aggressive, but mostly I was lost, unfeeling, unresponsive. And like you, I felt like I didn't have a choice. Downsizing, rightsizing, and just plain career terror had me clinging to my job for dear life. If you've picked up this book, you're probably struggling with the same questions and doubts. Your job has become such a big part of your life that it dwarfs everything else. You've spun a web that defines you but also conceals you. It is your salvation and your damnation -- you're living inside the job and whether it makes you unhappy or fulfilled almost doesn't matter anymore, because 'choice' is not in the vocabulary of the man who mistakes his job for a life. What happened to the dreams that used to keep us going?"

Lazear focuses on his own experiences while discussing specifically how American males often confuse their personal lives with their professional ones. He attempts to teach his readers to allow for time with their families, friends, and lives outside of the workplace. This book has no comedic tone and yet based on the title and approach one would expect it..

                    4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2002-09-26

Jonathon Lazear equates compulsive work with alcoholism - a dependency that amounts to a disease. Carrying on that analogy, Lazear presents a list of workaholism's symptoms, and a 10-step program to overcome the obsession with work. Although passages condemning overachievers and perfectionists will sound like fingernails on a chalkboard to many business men and women, we from getAbstract recommend this book to all executives, who would do well to heed this much of Lazear's advice: Make sure that you are not letting your job crowd out the important things in life.

                    3 out of 5 stars A depressing memoir.......2002-07-20

This book can be break down to 2 parts. The first half of the book is about his life story, and the second half is how he manage the problems that he had. The book was intended for very specific kind of audience-- overachievers that can't seem to differentiate work and personal life. In another words, Jonathon Lazear is directing this more towards to audiences who have been working for quite a while and are successful at work. He's reaching out to those who can affect directly on how much they make. After all, it's rare for people to make a seven-figure income. So, he's not talking about salaried jobs with overtime. This became a problem as half of his book is designed to relate to those who have been in the same similiar situation as him. It makes someone who doesn't share that experience to feel more and more distanced from his ideas as he keep talking about his past.

While his recollection maybe valuable to those who can relate; however, being someone who was once a literary agent, by how Lazear give his personal account he establishes a sense of helplessness, and Jon fails to change the tone when he gets to the second part of his book. Thus, even when Jonathon offers the solutions, he still not coming up with a positive outlook, and that puzzles me on how he expect the readers to truly take on a different perspective.

The book has a lot of useful information that can serve as a warning to those who maybe on their way to a similar situation, and it should be a even better read for those who can truly relate. However, The Man Who Mistook His Job for a Life could have been more positive to inspire the readers.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Memoir of A Workaholic.......2001-09-21

This book is a beautifully written glimpse into the inner life of a workaholic, particulary from a male point of view. I was very impressed with what the author accomplished -- evolving from a man whose self-worth was defined primarily by what he did for a living to a person who broadedned his world and identity to include a full human experience. He provides many helpful healing tips for workaholics. If you have the feeling that your work is your life, read this book!

                    Book Description

In Gettin' There, bestselling author Steve Farrar delves into the book of Psalms to give men a new sense of continuity, direction, purpose, and perspective. The Psalms are like a marked trail through life, showing that others have walked ahead and faced many of the challenges, temptations, heartaches, and perplexities that men will encounter on their journeys. Farrar shows that when a man begins to understand that the strong and caring hand of God is sovereign over everything in his life -- including his trials and heartaches -- his confidence, hope, and joy will increase dramatically in the God who created him and desires to use him. Now in paperback!

                    5 out of 5 stars Biblical Manhood.......2007-09-22

It was such a pleasure to read this book! Farrar uniquely bolsters men in their walk. He places failure and fear in the correct biblical perspective and provides us with biblical examples.

Men need to be strong. They are called to protect and lead. Yet, this book is not about leadership. It is not about doing it 'my way'. It is not about being autonomous. It is not about denying the unique role God has given to women.

References to Lloyd-Jones and MacArthur marks this book distinctive and re-assuring in contrast with 'Finishing Strong'. Definitely a huge theological improvement, and one that I found a blessing to Christian men.

Hopefully you may already know that biblical manhood is about guts, and not the glory.

5 out of 5 stars There's more to Psalms through Farrar's minds eye.......2005-11-07

We attended the Fall couples retreat at the Hume Lake Christian Camp in Sequoia Nat'l Park last month. Steve Farrar was our speaker. We were not familiar with Steve's work. Steve announced his weekend topic as simply Psalms 23 ... line by line ... for three days. First note to self ... this could get tedious.

A wonderful surprise ... it was dynamite! Steve grabs your attention with a treble hook. These rote verses came alive, brilliantly decrypted and positioned in the relatable context. The 6 verses, in Steve's macro/microscopic delivery brought Psalms 23 into the 21st century ... all brand spankin' new.

We wanted more. I've now read "Gettin' There". Each chapter is a WOW of cogitative discovery. There's so much more to Psalms than I had been equipped to absorb before reading "Gettin' There".

Steve's a big man, an impossing orator, a critical thinker of Gospel origins and here and now evangelistic thought. I was able to see his style and delivery in every word of "Gettin' There". Picture a large, animated, humble, X-ray eyed Puritan vanguard transported to 2005 to share the continuity of Biblical insight.

                    Read this book!

This book is one of the most down to earth reflections on Psalms and how they deal with our lives as men. Steve Farrar
is one of the best writers of Christian literature today because of his approach to the scriptures and how they relate to men. I have read several of his books and each and every one is as enlightening as the first. Thank you Steve!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Look at Psalm 23!.......2001-09-18

Though this book covers many topics and Psalms, chapters 9 and 10 (tape 4 in audio) are an incredible fresh look at Psalm 23. Some history and descriptive context explain phrases that are well known, but easily glossed over. Though he is a popular men's author, this section is applicable to everyone - as often as that passage is quoted, it's nice to understand more fully the love and compassion the shepherd has for us and our need for him.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Farrar does it again - Better than Pointman!.......2001-04-09

Steve Farrar's new book is terrific. This book will bring encouragement to any man out there - regardless of age. His use of the Psalms in this book and how they apply to your daily walk are true to the Word, insightful, and absolutely 100% Farrar - if you liked Point Man (and I did) you will love this book.
