Book Description

Our Marriage, Music, and MemoriesThis is the dawning of the age of Aquarius...or so the song went. Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr., are best known for their days as stars on the pop-group 5th Dimension. The Age of Aquarius, Wedding Bell Blues, and Up, Up, and Away propelled them to the top of the charts. For those who don't believe that Hollywood marriages can last, meet Marilyn and Billy. Amidst the Hollywood glamor and lifestyle, they fell in love and got married, but their marriage was far from bliss. Polar opposite backgrounds and clashing personalities made the journey difficult for a couple whose career success had come so easily. This book goes behind the closed doors of pain and emptiness to the dawning of the truth in their lives. Practical and personal, Two Lives, One Heart will encourage even the most jaded reader.

5 out of 5 stars What a legacy! What a story! Couldn't put it down!.......2005-03-01

I have been a huge fan of Marilyn McCoo and her husband, Billy Davis Jr, ever since I was a small child. They were singing with the "Fifth Dimension" back then--and I do mean I was a small child.

When they came out with "You Don't Have to Be a Star" in the mid1970s, my heart again was captured with their marvelous vocals, and tremendous performance. But I also knew there had to be more than just what was "meeting the eye."

And there was. And is.

In "Up, Up and Away" these two legends (in their own right, I might add) tell a very real, candid, and page-turning story of just what life has been like for them, individually, and as family. Even when that family included three other great singers. The chapters are written in a wonderfully readable dialogue format, that invites one to just keep reading.

And that is what I did. I was waiting for their "book signing/discussion" last weekend here in Chicago, and started reading the book that morning at Borders Bookstore. I finished the entire thing in about three hours. What a fascinating read!

This marvelous story tells of the faithfulness of God in every area of life to these two--and His faithfulness was evident long before they committed their lives to Him. Marilyn's candid assessment of her "perfectionism" along with Billy's candid admission of his alcoholism/gambling addictions provide "an insider look" on two people who appear "near perfect" when we see their immense talent on television or screen.

This volume is filled with humor, anecdotes, and situations that could happen in just about any household. Every incident reminds us how "real" that Marilyn and Billy are--just like the rest of us. Their "discussion" time was filled with laughter, insight, and grace--just like this marvelous book is filled with the same.

I agree with Dr Jack Hayford, their pastor (at Church on the Way, Van Nuys, CA) in saying this story is wonderfully readable, and a treasure to my spirit. It will be to yours as well.

5 out of 5 stars Up, Up, and Away.......2004-12-15

More than an inside look at one of America's best-loved singing groups, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr.'s biography is a refreshingly honest look at a celebrity marriage that has managed to work. Interspersing historical events with the popular growth of the 5th Dimension, this enjoyable book provides insight into a relationship that started out as a friendship and evolved into a lasting love. The authors candidly share very personal thoughts and experiences, explaining that the challenges that they have faced are issues that are common to all marriages. The CD included is an added bonus.

5 out of 5 stars You Don't Have To Be A Star . . ........2004-11-30

and you don't have to be married to appreciate and enjoy this terrific book! The McCoo & Davis story works on a multitude of levels--as a musical history, a marriage manual from a duo who's put in the work to make it work, and the spiritual journey of two (talented and famous) intelligent, insightful individuals.

From a historical and cultural standpoint, the reader will be reminded just how HUGE the 5th Dimension were, and even the most devoted fan of the group, as I humbly consider myself, will learn new facts about them. (I knew they played the White House, but the Fillmore??) Since the book is written in Marilyn and Billy's own "voices," reading it gives the feeling of hanging out in their dressing room after a performance, listening to them reminisce and answer all of your questions (and ones you didn't know you had).

Marilyn and Billy's honesty and integrity must also be praised. They don't tell tales on anyone except themselves in these pages, and they write about their foibles and misadventures with candor and a notable lack of self-dramatization.

Lastly, the book contains a CD, demonstrating the wonderful voices that made this pair renowned. I confess I would've written this sooner, but I procrastinated on finishing the book because I didn't want it to end!

5 out of 5 stars Duo Delights With Life Story.......2004-10-22

With humor and candor, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. share the story of their lives on and off the performance stage. There is the excitement of traveling the world over amid historical happenings of the last four decades, while facing struggles that come to all relationships. All who read "Up, Up and Away" will be challenged to reach for dreams and inner peace. Marilyn and Billy's journey together reveals achievement's greatest curtain call is to live with selfless faithfulness to those we love most, while showing that the rewards for doing so far outweigh the investment.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for 5th Dimension members Marilyn & Billy.......2004-10-17

This book is fantastic. I couldn't put it down. I read it in record time because I just kept on reading.

There is so much in here for fans and for anyone interested in life! Not only is it a chronicle of 2 Superstars lives and career, but it is woven with regular life experience filled with tumultuous and wondrous events. It has music, love, mood and humor. It's political, timely, mystical, spiritual and fascinating. Marilyn and Billy bring you from their youth, through the height of their career in the psychedelic 60's, to Solid Gold and up until today. If you were around for any part of this you will remember with great reflection the memories, and will be surprised at how they handled the ups and downs while feeling their aura after you've read this book. I gaurantee after you're finished you will have experienced a wide range of thoughts and emotion. What more can you ask for in a great book Additionally, this book includes a surprise gift in the back with a 2 cut cd. Fans and new comers will definitely appreciate this.

    Book Description

"I was in a hospital with a severe brain injury. I was semi-paralyzed on my right side: I couldn't speak or eat. I had double vision. I couldn't walk. And I was strapped to a bed for my own protection. But I do remember that room in the rehabilitation hospital-it was like no other room. More things happened to me in that one small space than had happened to me in my entire life." The victim of a devastating motorcycle accident, author John Kennedy Rizzo knows too well of the social, spiritual, and medical aspects of traumatic brain injury. Rising from Hell traces his path through partial paralysis, incapacitating depression, and terrifying panic attacks. On his long road to rehabilitation, Rizzo discovered ways to overcome impossible odds. He speaks with compassion and wisdom as he encourages brain-injured people to find their way to the enabled life that may well lie within their grasp.

4 out of 5 stars Hope for the Brain Injured.......2005-04-01

Are you a healthcare provider caring for patients with traumatic brain injuries? Do you know someone who received a brain injury? If so, this book can help you understand just what exactly such a patient goes through. John Kennedy Rizzo experienced such an injury as a result of a motorcycle accident, and came thru to the other side(with a LOT of hard work). His story can help illuminate what patients cannot verbalize about their experiences; I encourage you to add it to your library.

5 out of 5 stars -A realistic AND encouraging guide to the acting industry!.......1999-06-16

This book is an excellent guide to the common (and uncommonly) asked questions regarding movies, commercials, and other theatrical carreers. It focuses mainly on the ways to get involved in the industry, but doesn't stop there. They go on to share priceless advice, and the scoop on how to keep everything moving once you've made it as an actor. It's detailed enough that a beginner can read it, yet substantial enough for already-known actors to enjoy. Throughout the book, they have painted a clear and realistic view of the industry, while keeping it optomistic and encouraging, not intimidating. Basically, Kelly Kidwell and Ruth Devorin have created an acting book far superior than many out there.

      Book Description

Although eighteenth-century Viennese keyboard music, especially by such composers as Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, is among the most popular ever written, there has been surprisingly little serious research into the instruments for which it was composed. Consequently myths and guesses abound, while accurate and reliable information is hard to come by. This book fills that gap. Based on evidence from primary source material, much of it previously undiscovered or neglected, Maunder traces the history and development of the various keyboard instruments available in Vienna throughout the eighteenth century--harpsichords, clavichords, and pianos--and their use by composers and performers. There are detailed descriptions of many surviving Viennese instruments, several of which have only recently come to light; contemporary newspaper advertisements for over 1200 keyboard instruments are reproduced, in the original German as well as in English translation; and an alphabetical list of eighteenth-century Viennese makers includes much newly-discovered biographical information as well as some previously unknown names.

The music of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven forms a cornerstone of the modern repertoire, but very little is known about the context in which these composers worked. Beginning with the early decades of the eighteenth century, the essays in this volume consider some of the musical traditions and practices of this little understood period of music history. Four main areas are covered: orchestral music, sacred music, opera and keyboard music.

This is the best crossword puzzle I've looked at. It's vastly superior to the N.Y. Time offering. I pretty exclusively work on their puzzles but from my point of view, their dictionary is almost unusable. I've also found this to be an incredibly handy basic thesaurus...

Very helpful and much better organized than other crossword dictionaries I've tried. It's a bit out of date and often things you'd expect to find aren't there, but it is very useful, especially for movie, sports, geography, place names, etc.

I appreciate this dictionary for its consistant knowledge of major authors, books, countries, mythology and other traditional information. It is, however, missing most current pop culture information about movies, actors...etc.

            4 out of 5 stars Alright.......1999-11-21

I used this book at Cornell's school of Industrial and Labor Relations in an OB course. It was ok, but I have seen better. The examples are mostly revelant, but sometimes it strays from the covered material. A good book to use to review for the final exam, but if your teacher draws tests from their own lectures, make sure you utilize the index in the back!

2 out of 5 stars Poor theory, good applications.......1999-06-11

This text was used at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for an honors OB course. It served the class well by providing relevant and often humorous applications of theory. However, the descriptions of the actual theories themselves were weak and vague often referring to other concepts not yet learned.
