Walter Benjamin: Selected Writings, Volume 1, 1913-1926 (Walter Benjamin)
ASIN: 0674015886 |
Book Description
In the frenzied final years of the Weimar Republic, amid economic collapse and mounting political catastrophe, Walter Benjamin emerged as the most original practicing literary critic and public intellectual in the German-speaking world. Volume 2 of the Selected Writings is now available in paperback in two parts.
In Part 1, Benjamin is represented by two of his greatest literary essays, "Surrealism" and "On the Image of Proust," as well as by a long article on Goethe and a generous selection of his wide-ranging commentary for Weimar Germany's newspapers.
Part 2 contains, in addition to the important longer essays, "Franz Kafka," "Karl Kraus," and "The Author as Producer," the extended autobiographical meditation "A Berlin Chronicle," and extended discussions of the history of photography and the social situation of the French writer, previously untranslated shorter pieces on such subjects as language and memory, theological criticism and literary history, astrology and the newspaper, and on such influential figures as Paul Valery, Stefan George, Hitler, and Mickey Mouse.
Customer Reviews:
Beware of the translation.......2006-05-14
Harvard is doing non-German speakers a great service by compiling all of these essential essays in chronological order. I am baffled, however, that some of the translations are so inaccurate. Non-German readers should know that there are egregious errors in some of these translations, especially those by Rodney Livingstone. I have compared one of his translations closely with the original German and was shocked to find so many inaccuracies. In one sentence Livingstone translates into English the *exact* opposite of what Benjamin actually writes. He doesn't just get the wrong word (as he does elsewhere); he composes a sentence that is the precise negation of what Benjamin wrote. This is very worrisome and does not bode well for the rest of the volume. I have not closely compared the majority of the volume to the original-- I don't have the time for that. But from the little evidence I found in just a few hours it looks bad indeed.

Customer Reviews:
Budge is a GREAT WAY to become FLUENT in this language.......2006-04-07
Budge is the best way to go if you are serious about becoming fluent in this beautiful language. The fact is that Budge puts the symbol, the transliteration, and the translation all together so you can know exactly what word you are reading and you can learn the syntax by reading his texts. You can pronounce it as you are learning it while reading the symbol all at the same time. The other wonderful thing about Budge is that he has loads of works out there. If you study one book, then you can easily move into other books and get the same reinforcement without having to learn some different author's other pronunciation key.
I know it is possible to use these books and become fluent. I am in the process of studying this language and a friend who is already fluent recommended these books for me (actually he reviewed Rosemary Clark's book The Sacred Tradition)--but another key point is to understand the essence behind the language. One who follows the Faith of the Gods of Ancient Egypt will be able to relate more to these texts because in order to understand a language such as this one, one must understand the spirit behind the language. Anyone can pick up a hieroglyphics book and learn to write people's names in hieroglyphics. To really understand the deeper aspect of the language, one must study it from the inside and not just as an observer. It is impossible to truly become fluent in a language by being just an observer.
I would recommend reading The Search for Omm Sety about a woman who was a famous Egyptologist and also practiced the Faith of the Gods. She was one of the few people who learned Ancient Egyptian language fluently and was able to understand and communicate its essence. Omm Sety was a personal friend of Budge and actually helped Budge to edit his work and pronunciation. You also may want to read The Sacred Tradition by Rosemary Clark. She was another author who became fluent in this language and she discussses the use of this language in her writings.
I highly recommend this book. Budge has the very best to offer for anyone serious about learning this language.
The best just keeps getting better!.......2006-03-17
If your reading the Heiroglyphics you will need this book so don't even kid your self if you think you won't because it's worth it's weight in gold.

egyptian heiroglyphic dictionaries.......2006-01-26
i have purchased both of the volumes of this set and have found a lot of differences in the main transliteration of the hieroglyphics, but these two books are well worth the money if you are just learning to read and write hieroglyphics.
Egyptian Heiroglyphics.......2005-11-17
I wasn't happy with the book. It is outdated and doesn't measure up to some of the newer editions. I did get some benefit out of it but not enough to say the book was worth the price.
This book is very useful!.......2004-06-10
This book has had very mixed reactions from those who have read it. Budge was writing at a time when people were unsure of the exact values of certain characters, and when many things about the Ancient Egyptians were still unknown. For this reason there are some strange mistakes in his dictionaries that many advanced scholars now criticse him for.
However, this book does offer one of the largest hieroglyphic dictionaries currently available and for this reason it is indispensable.A casual learner, who wants to be able to read the cartouches that appear on monuments and stelae can do so with Budge's king list.
An advanced scholar though, who needs to know the unusual words that can be found only in Budge's dictionaries, will have enough knowledge to correct his outdated transliteration.
For the casual student I recommend this book intensely, as it helps greatly with cartouches and formulaic inscriptions.
For the more advanced Egyptologist I also recommend this book, as it offers as I have said a far less "concise" version of Faulkner's Concise Dictionary.
P.S If you buy Volume One, do not forget to purchase Volume Two!

Book Description
For more than 25 years the Peabody Museum has been publishing The Corpus of Maya Hieroglyphic Inscriptions under the editorial and artistic direction of Mayanist Ian Graham. The goal of this unique series of folio volumes is to document in photographs and detailed line drawings all known Maya inscriptions and their associated figurative art. When complete, the Corpus will have published the inscriptions from over 200 sites and 2,000 monuments. The series has been instrumental in the remarkable success of the ongoing process of deciphering Maya writing, making available hundreds of texts to epigraphers working around the world.
Each volume in the series consists of three fascicles, which examine an individual site or group of neighboring sites and include maps of site location and plans indicating the placement monuments within each site. Each inscription is reproduced in its entirety in both photographs and line drawings. The text of each volume presents descriptive information about the sites and monuments and their associated artifacts.

Highly disappointed!.......2007-07-16
I didn't get the above-mentioned item. It arrived not on 06.07.2007 but on 29.06.2006, when I was on my business trip. Actually, I was misled by your e-mail to me which said that the book would be delivered within the time interval from 06.07.2007 and 21.07.2007. When I came back from the business trip and tried to take the book from my post office they told me that my item had been already sent back to the sender, that is to your company, I guess.
Good job by Waite.......2006-03-18
Waite usually does a good job of translations. He generally seems to be the most objective of 19th Century esotericists and occultists.
Paracelsus was and is a huge influence on the subject of alchemy. Anyone who is interested in alchemy or the philosophy of the Renaissance would get much from this book.
The edition I have is the paperback reprint from Kessinger. In my experience, their reprints are of decent quality, clear, and readable. They make difficult-to-find texts affordable. I have several books published by them, and they are all of decent quality.
It belongs in the time in which it was written.......2006-01-02
Got them (both parts), glanced through and threw them both in the trash right there and then. The man wrote a treatise on the long life and yet he couldn't preserve his own to an old ripe age... Paracelsus is the name he assumed later in life - meaning superior Celsus (a Roman physician). That alone, in my eyes, warrants the treatment of his works in the way he treated the works of others before him. I have to give him - he was a prolific writer and some stuff he got right. But if you string words together randomly, after much writing you'll get something right.... for some this might be a very entertaining read but not for me. I can't stand mixing religion with science and his audacity in selling his thoughts/beliefs for facts knows no bounds.
Be sure to follow this up with Part 2!.......2005-10-04
Paracelus is my personal favorite of the "famous alchemists." He took an approach that diverged greatly from his contemporaries: "harmony of the man is the microcosm and Nature the macrocosm." He veered from soul purification and concentrated on how bodies got out of natural balance and how he could cure them. He summarized his own views by saying: "Many have said of Alchemy, that is for making of gold and silver. For me such is not the aim, but to consider only what virtue and power may lie in medicines." And I am sure that many of the pharmaceutical giants today wholeheartedly agree with him! The work is fascinating as well as the man. This book as well as Part 2 bring him fully to light for all of us to appreciate!
A Great Collection.......2001-07-08
The Hermetic and Alccemical Writings of Paracelsus the Great is an AWESOME collection of Alchemical/Hermetic material. It was my first "Paracelsian" book, and probably not my last. If you have little or no Alchemical/Hermetic knowledge though, I think you should wait before buying this one.

Dated and problematic.......2003-11-26
If you just want to read the Hermetica, read Brian Copenhaver's translations, which are much better than Scott's. And of course, these aren't by Sir Walter Scott (of Ivanhoe fame) anyway, if you're interested in him for some reason, but by a quite different Walter Scott.
Scott's translations are still valuable for the specialist. You should be able to find used copies of the trade paperback edition (Hermes House, at one point), though, which are rather better bound than these Kessinger xeroxes.
If you have Copenhaver, you'll probably want these, although I'd recommend a different printing.
The core teachings of Gnosis.......2002-06-16
I am going to review this volume because I read every single English word of it, cover-to-cover. I admit that I didn't read the corresponding original language text, because my Latin was never all that good, and I have no Greek. I wish that I did, though. Just in English translation I can see where these teachings transport you to an entirely different sort of mind-set, an entirely different world.
Indeed, you will either come to develop a sort of intuitive understanding of the spiritual principles being discused here, or you will simple give up in disgust and dismiss it as meaningless and incomprehensible. Perhaps it is incomprehensible to modern sensibility, but it is far from meaningless. If you are familiar with Plato and Plotinus it will help. I also find that a familiarity with the concept of the Tao helps with understanding what is meant by Kosmos. I suppose that there could be esoteric teachings encoded and hidden in the original text, but personally I find the exoteric spiritual and metaphysical speculations to be quite interesting and valuable in their own right.
There was a reason that these teachings were preserved through so many centuries, while so much else was consigned to flames or left to rot....

Book Description
"One of the first great events in Christian history was the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, convened to organize Christian sects and beliefs into a unified doctrine. The great Christian clergymen who wrote before this famous event are referred to as the Ante-Nicenes and the Apostolic Fathers, and their writings are collected here in a ten-volume set. The Ante-Nicenes lived so close to the time of Christ that their interpretations of the New Testament are considered more authentic than modern voices. But they are also real and flawed men, who are more like their fellow Christians than they are like the Apostles, making their words echo in the ears of spiritual seekers. In Volume III of the 10-volume collected works of the Ante-Nicenes first published between 1885 and 1896, readers will find three of Tertullian¿s most famous writings. In Apologetic, Tertullian addresses the powers that be in Rome, demanding that Christians be accepted and tolerated by Roman law. In Anti-Marcion, Tertullian attacks and discusses heretics. And in Ethical he discusses a variety of moral questions."

Book Description
Andrzej Wajda is considered one of Polands - many would say of the worlds - greatest film directors. During the thirty-five years of his activities in film, theater or television, his work, whether strong or weak, always arouses strong emotions and provokes intense debates in the media. His films deal with historical and political issues concerning Polish society, the fate of Poland, its glorification and its restoration; the essence of the Polish character and the nature of political power. Controversial, painful, stimulating and cinematically beautiful, they never fail to fully engage the spectator. This is particularly true for his major political films, which form the basis of this study. Applying Bakhtins concept of dialogism, the author shows how a creative interaction between the image on the screen and the viewer is established through Wajdas films. At the same time, she offers a detailed analysis of the historical events leading up to the collapse of the Socialist system in Poland.
