Book Description
"The story that unfolds in this little volumein ethereal photographs, perceptive essays, and revealing wildflower species descriptionsis a most moving experience in nature appreciation. Savor every image and word." from the Foreword by Marion T. Jackson, author of 101 Trees of Indiana and The Natural Heritage of Indiana
This lovely and thoughtful volume pays tribute to the native plants characteristically found in the Midwest's quiet waters, as distinct from its flowing streams. While most of the species populate broad ranges, all are part of the familiar display that may greet a summer visitor to lakes and wet grounds in the Great Lakes region.
Wild Plants in FlowerWetlands and Quiet Waters of the Midwest features color photographs of 45 species; delightful and engaging species notes for each plant, its habitat, appearance, and range; and perceptive mini-essays that describe the evolution of wetlands and botanical plants and the dangers they face. This field guide will help nature lovers identify and treasure the delicate flora of upland swamp forests, floodplains, wet prairies, marshes, fens, and bogs, and perhaps help preserve their dwindling numbers.

Vince Luca, 17, has a problem. His wealthy family runs the, uh, vending machine business in New York, and Vince is determined not to be part of it. Especially after a hot date is ruined when he finds that his older brother Tommy has conducted some business with Jimmy the Rat and hidden the messy and temporarily unconscious body in the trunk of Vince's car. His dad, the King of the Mob, is reasonable, sensible, lots of fun, gives great presents to his kids--and his name strikes the hearts of other mobsters to stone.
Although Vince keeps a low profile at school, his family connection brings him unwanted advantages, like the birthday Porsche that gets him arrested on stolen vehicle charges, or the football game in which he makes touchdown after touchdown because word has gotten around and nobody is willing to tackle him. Even private conversations at home have to be carried on in the basement because the FBI has bugged the house and an agent is always listening. Vince's life is inextricably tangled up with the family business, no matter how hard he tries to stay out of it. How can he show them he's serious? Then he meets Kendra, and when she innocently reveals that her father's an FBI agent--that FBI agent--it's a match made in heaven. He thinks.
Gordon Korman, author of (No More Dead Dogs) and over 30 other witty YA novels, is at his best in this Sopranos-style spoof about a teen's home life with the Mob. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
Vince Luca is just like any other high school guy. His best friend, Alex, is trying to score vicariously through him; his brother is a giant pain; and his father keeps bugging him to get motivated. There is just one thing that really sets him apart for other kidsæhis father happens to be the head of a powerful crime organization. Needless to say, while Vince's family's connections can be handy for certain things-like when teachers are afraid to give him a bad grade as they can put a serious crimp in his dating life. How is he supposed to explain to a girl what his father does for a living? But when Vince finally meets one who seems to be worth the trouble, her family turns out to be the biggest problem of all. Because her father is an FBI agent-the one who wants to put his father away for good.

Son of the Mob.......2007-10-05
The Son of the Mob is a great book about the hecttic life of a teenage boy. The weird thing is that Vinces the main characters dad is the Mob leader of NYC (the Godfather). Vinces love Kendra is a big part of his life but her father is a FBI agent trying to get Vinces dad away forever. Although this book is very slow it was lightly funny overall it was pretty good.
Lightly Humorous, Heavily Unrealistic.......2007-08-09
Gordon Korman's SON OF THE MOB gets as much mileage as possible out of a funny situation -- the teenaged son of a mobster falls in love with the daughter of the FBI agent investigating said mobster -- but ultimately runs out of gas while taking unrealistic turns that at times make little sense. Of course, you could argue that a book written to be humorous does not have to drive over the suspension bridge of disbelief, but I'll argue that it sure would get the narrative from here to there a lot faster.
Vince Luca is the protagonist with a heart, Alex is his dweeby friend, and Kendra Bightly (set up for the gag line, daughter of "Agent Bite-Me") the girlfriend. Vince has a bad-boy older brother named Tommy, a Godfather-type dad named (guess what?) Anthony, and a mother who lives to feed her family too much like an Italian (fancy that!) grandmother. The Luca family has a lot of "uncles," if you know what I mean, and Vince commands a lot of respect simply because of his name. I can hear the stereo even as I type!
There's a few good gags in the book, and the plot is carefully constructed, it's just that the actions and the twists and turns don't seem terribly real. Vince does not want to be a mobster's son, yet takes advantage of many of its perks. Anthony Luca is ruthless, but has a heart. Mom cooks, but turns out to hold a larger than expected (or to be believed) role (pass the butter). It's all breezy and maybe entertaining, if you like this sort of thing.
Kids looking for a lot of bang-bang, shoot-em-up, Mario Puzo-type stuff will be disappointed, as this is more skewed toward the trials and tribulations of first love and fitting in with the family than with any violence. It's also safely clean, language, sex, and violence-wise. More for boys, but perhaps of interest to girls as well, SON OF THE MOB is one of those books that will work for you if you embrace both the situation and the characters. I had some trouble with both, making it what mobsters would call "my problem."
Son of the mob.......2007-05-25
The book is very deep in detil and it goes deep into the mob. in alot of the parts it's very suspensful and there is close dangerous action. you can barley put the book down and if you like the mob you'll love this book. It goes deep into the FBI falling the mob boss or godfather.
Great Book!.......2007-02-14
Son of the Mob, by Gordon Korman is a thrilling realistic fiction book about a boy, normal in every sense, except for the fact that his dad is the leader of one of the most known crime organizations in the city, the mob. Vince Luca, 16, has to deal with his dad's title on a daily basis. Son of the Mob is all about how Vince tries to help two guys, James Ratelli (Jimmy Rat) and Ed Manakin. While all of this is going on, he has to keep struggling relationship going with Kendra Brightly, an FBI agent's daughter, with out spilling the beans about his dad. Vince ha
Son of the Mob is a great books for teens, because it talks about all the things that we have to deal with in our everyday lives. I would definitely recommend it to any and all of my friends. but I would not recommend it to any kids under 12-13, because of some scenes in the book, and adults probably wouldn't enjoy it as much. Son of the Mob is not in a series, and it is not a prequel, or a sequel.
My point of view is that he did the right thing, most of the time. This book is about organized crime, mystery, and realistic fiction. The themes are about doing the right thing, love, and lots, lots more. Gordon Korman has written more than 50 books for teens. I give it a 4 stars, out of five.

Book Description
A suspenseful, emotionally charged real-life Sopranos: The son of New York's most notorious Mafia killer reveals the conflicted life he led being raised by a cold-blooded murderer, who was also a devoted family man, and the wrenching legacy of Mafia family life.
Al DeMeo will never forget the day in 1992 when a coworker, a fellow trader at the New York Stock Exchange, taunted him with a copy of the hot new book Murder Machine, chronicling the horrific criminal life of DeMeo's father, Roy, the head of the most deadly gang in organized crime. The moment sent DeMeo into a psychological tailspin: How could he have spent his life looking up to, and loving, a vicious killer?
For the Sins of My Father recounts the chilling rise and fall of the man who led the Gambino family's most fearsome killers and thieves, through the eyes of a son who had never known any other kind of life. Coming of age in an opulent Long Island house where money is abundant but its source is unclear, Al becomes Roy's confidant, sent to call in loans at age fourteen and gradually coming to understand his father's job description--loan shark, car thief, porn purveyor and, above all, murderer. But when Al is seventeen, Roy's body is found in the trunk of a car, a gangland slaying that places Al between federal prosecutors seeking his testimony and a mob crew determined to keep him quiet.
Desperate to abide by the father-son bond, but equally determined to escape his father's dangerous and doomed life, Al Demeo embarks on a courageous quest for the truth, reconciliation, and honor. With the implacable narrative drive of a thriller and the power of a painfully honest memoir, For the Sins of My Father presents a startling and unprecedented perspective on the underworld of organized crime, exposing for the first time the cruel legacy of a Mafia life.
From the Hardcover edition.

Roy Demeo the Gangster AND Family Man (as told by his son Albert).......2007-08-20
Wow! If you've ever read books that involve Roy Demeo (The Ice Man, Murder Machine to name a few), you will know that his reputation is that of a ruthless, antagonistic, killer who was widely feared by many for such a reputation. However, this book is interesting in the fact that the author tell about his life with his father, Roy Demeo, as told from a son's point of view. This exposes Roy Demeo's "family Man" side, and shows how much he really did love his wife and children.
Once criticism of the book is that it has a slow start. The first few chapters are slow and a little boring, but it gets better from there.
There's a flip side to every coin.......2007-08-01
After have read Murder Machine I came over The Since of my father by accident after surfing the net...I think it's a wonderful book by Albert, that gives you the insight from a sons perspective of a mob hitman.
Murder Machine was great, but how much did they acctually "spice up" the stories??? I thought "the sins of my father" was a fantastic book, very interesting and hearthwarming. If you like me enjoy mob-books, have a big heart and haven't read this one: buy it. Don't mind the people who gives it a low rating, they were expecting Lucky Luke or something.
Great book Albert De Meo. May your father R.I.P.
Albert Demeo.......2007-07-20
We see the life of a gangster through the eyes of a young boy. A young boy who adores his father and will do anything to please him. He is slowly introduced into the workings of the Mafia. The older he gets, the more tradegy his life encounters. Very well written. My only regret was that there were not enough photos in this book.
Poor.......2007-05-19
Getting a book published merely because your daddy was a gangster is a bit of crime. Me buying it and toiling through the amateurish prose even more of a crime.
don't bother.......2007-05-07
The kid doesn't know anything about his father other then what the police knew. you can find a lot better book about Demeo

Son of the Mob.......2007-04-08
If I had to change my name to anything else it would be to Vincent Luca. This is the name of the Son of the Mob. This was the second book of the series about the son of the mob that I read. Vincent is the first Luca to graduate from high school and make it to college. When he gets there he hopes he will be mafia-free, because he does not like his other option, actually joining the mob. Within Vincent's first week at college his brother Tommy shows up at his dorm and ends up staying for a while.
Throughout the other quarter of the book, Vincent's "uncles", men who work under Vincent's father, start showing up at his dorm with his mother's homemade food. The "uncles" say that they are there to go sightseeing, but Vincent has other suspicions. Ironically Vincent's college roommate is the son of a Congressman. He has a knack for the "five finger discount". Vincent's roommate finds out about the mob connection, Vincent therefore wants his roommate to stay far away from hid "uncles" in case he has any ideas about joining the mob. This is my favorite part of the book
It turns out that Tommy is only in town to find ways to scam money. The "uncles" are only there so they can cause riots at all of the Congressman's speeches.
Vincent's roommate goes out and steals a car, at the same Vincent finds out that his own father is in town, and mysteriously someone important goes missing. To add up to a great grand finale, Vincent and his roommate both follow their fathers coincidentally at the same time. It turns out they are all headed to the same place, the same place the missing person is being held. The question now is whose the good guy and whose the bad guy???
This book was well written and well put together. The author did a good job of piecing together the facts. He alluded, very well I might add, to what it would be like in the mob. It was the kind of book that you felt like you were a part of. It really felt like you knew what Vincent was going through. I would definately reccomend this book to anyone interested in an action packed novel.
Book Review of Son of the Mob Hollywood Hustle.......2007-03-23
What would someone do if they thought they were finally away from the mob but then it suddenly came back into their life? Vince Luca faced this in the fantastic book Son of the Mob Hollywood Hustle by Gordon Karman.
At first Vince goes off to college happy to get away from the mob which is his father's business. His roommate, Trey, is the son of a congressman. As things go on Vince's relationship with his girlfriend, Kendra goes down hill and he gets mixed up with an evil scheme.
There are multiple things that I loved about this book. First, I enjoyed the plot because it always kept me hooked and I always wanted to know what would happen next. This is shown when Trey steals something and gets caught. When he got caught I wanted to know what would happen to him. Another thing I liked about this book was the theme. The theme teaches people that just because someone looks and acts good around the public does not mean that they don't do bad things and vice versa. Finally, I loved the character development. For example, Trey hated his dad and what he did at the beginning but Trey matures and learns that he actually loves his dad and will help him no matter what.
This book would be appropriate for teens because it has lots of action and suspense and different relationships. I enjoyed Son of the Mob Hollywood Hustle by Gordon Karman and I hope other people do too.
An ok book.......2007-03-03
I read the book Son of the Mob. And I did not think it was that great of a book. It started out as a kid from New York. Who always dreamed of going to Hollywood and becoming a director.
I think this book could of bean better. I did not think this book was worth reading. I think it had a good plan. But this one didn't stick.
I like the plan. The characters. The author. But it was poorly exicuted.
Over all I think this book is ok. It's a fine book. But it didn't make sence. I was poorly writen.
Son of the Mob.......2006-06-09
The start of the book was an adventure already. It began like any good story should, with a bang as my seventh and eigth grade language arts teacher would say. The book begins describing for the first two or three chapters about the life of a young man that lives in New York. His father is a Mobster that he is always argueing with and getting in fights about his fathers job of killing people and taking their money. So during the entire book Vince (the main character) and his dad Anthony Luca are getting in fights because Vince doesn't agree and he promises never to have anything to do with the mob. Vince can't do anything about it because all the clothes he has ever excepted form his father and mother were from stolen money. Vince isn't the most popular kid at highschool and he doesn't have a girlfreind until he meets the girl of his dreams named Kendra. So they date for a while and when the time comes that she wants to come over to his house he has to say no because his father and Uncles of the mob are always "working" in the house, but he never tells her the real reason of why she can't come over and get to know his family because he always makes wierd excuses. But when he goes to see her family he learns something knew, her father works for the FBI and his main objective is to try to put Vince's dad in jail. So when the time comes that he accually tells her who his dad and how he really knew her dad she was supprised but still wanted to continue their relationship, and they agreed to never go to eachother's houses. When the time comes to be voted for Prom King and Queen there are a bunch of posters that say to vote for Kendra and Vince. He thinks it's her and she thinks it's him, and neither of them want to get voted for because it is a big thing in their part of the town, so if they do get voter they could possible be found out by each other's parents. So the whole thing almost makes them brake up, and they do for a short time. During this time Vince has been trying to help these two men that need help to pay his father $600. While he promised Kendra that he would stay out of his father's business he gets involved and her father being an FBI agent sees this and takes pictures as evidence and Kendra sees the pictures. So after Vince broke his promise she gets really agrivated and that is the reason they break up for some time. The only reason that they don't break up forever, is because Kendra does some research of her own and he is innocent and they get back together. Inconclusion Vince has a hard time dealing with his father's business getting the way with everything, and messing with his life.
son of the mob hollywood hustle.......2006-04-11
If you like the kind of book that can be funny with a lot of action an romance all at the same time this is the book for you. The son of the mob is the second bnook in the series of son of the mob books. The book is about a high school graduate named vince luka that is going to collage in hollywood to learn how to be a film director but this isnt just any ordinary kid he is the son of a mob boss in New York city. When vince gets to collage his roomate is the son of a fomouse congresman that is running for governer, talk about two different worlds. Everything is going ok until some of vinces fathers cronies show up for a little vacation but vince knows better than that and soon enough the congressmans opponent is kidnapped.
I think this is a great book because it always kept me on my toes and it has a great surprise ending.

Customer Reviews:
the best biochemistry textbook for the post-genomic era.......2007-03-13
In this book you find classical biochemistry, and a lot of it. In contrast to most other biochemistry textbooks which drift away from the topic and go more and more into cell biology, immunology and the like, Metzler concentrates on the central topics of biochemistry, the enzymes and their mechanisms. There is no other book where one is more likely to find detailled infomation on the structure-function relation of just about any enzyme (with the only downside of having only black-and-white pictures, even for structures). This book is, however, to be treated with caution: it is not covering the topics of most biochem beginners courses (or is providing too much information that is about to overwhelm inexperienced readers, respectively). Still, it will be an unavoidable desk reference to any biochemist who cares about enzymes and will be highly valuable at least as long as the previous edition from 1977.
A terrible textbook to study biochemistry .......2006-12-21
The book is horrible! I used many textbooks to teach students biochemistry: Voet, Stryer, Lehninger, Devlin and others. Voet's Biochemistry although too detailed in some places is good for chemistry majors, but is a nightmare for medical students for which Stryer and Lehninger is great. In all tasks these books are better then Metzler.
Metzler's Biochemistry is simply overwhelming. You will hate it if:
- you are medical student or just a novice in the field. What's the point in reading a whole page about "Does lysozyme distort its substrate?" or next 5 pages about xylanases, hemicelluloses, galactanase, glucocerebrosidase..? Though if you know organic chemistry inside out you'll find 300 pages of bioorganic chemistry quite a good review (of what you probably already know).
- you are a graduate student in biochemistry and need a reference. Get something else. For example, speeking about proteases and phosphatase Metzler mostly enumatates some thirty enzymes, but gives the details for only a few. In this book you'll find excessive treatment of one thing on 50 pages and a brief mentioning of 100 things on the next 50 pages.
To sum up I'd like to say that this book is good for a professional biochemist who likes reading encyclopedias before going to bed or wants to expend his/her knowledge in bioorganic chemistry.
You've got to bear in mind that it weighs 16 pounds and trust me you'll never want to take it any where from your shelf (unless you are fond of powerlifting). Such books like dinosaurs will either get extinct or be covered with dust in the library.

Book Description
In the large and thriving field of compact transformation groups an important role has long been played by cohomological methods. This book aims to give a contemporary account of such methods, in particular the applications of ordinary cohomology theory and rational homotopy theory with principal emphasis on actions of tori and elementary abelian p-groups on finite-dimensional spaces. For example, spectral sequences are not used in Chapter 1, where the approach is by means of cochain complexes; and much of the basic theory of cochain complexes needed for this chapter is outlined in an appendix. For simplicity, emphasis is put on G-CW-complexes; the refinements needed to treat more general finite-dimensional (or finitistic) G-spaces are often discussed separately. Subsequent chapters give systematic treatments of the Localization Theorem, applications of rational homotopy theory, equivariant Tate cohomology and actions on Poincaré duality spaces. Many shorter and more specialized topics are included also. Chapter 2 contains a summary of the main definitions and results from Sullivan's version of rational homotopy theory which are used in the book.
