5 out of 5 stars Best book for geysers while in Yellowstone National Park.......2005-09-02

This little field guide is hands-down the best guide to use in choosing which geysers to view, and where, while in Yellowstone National Park. T. Scott Bryan's "The Geysers of Yellowstone" is also a great book, but has few photos and all in black and white (except the cover), and its comprehensiveness reduces its usefulness for quick consultation during a visit. Buy Bryan's book to learn everything there is to know about Yellowstone's Geysers, but buy Schreier's gorgeously illustrated and compact Field Guide for use IN the Park on your vacation.

5 out of 5 stars A must buy if visiting Yellowstone. Excellent Book.......2004-09-20

This book has all the information you need about the geysers in Yellowstone. Which basin of the park each geyser is located. It has maps of the different basins and where you will find each of the Geysers. Includes color pictures of each geyser and gives great detail about each, including intervals of when the geyser errupts.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT field guide!.......2002-09-08

I cannot speak highly enough of this book.
My boyfriend and I just got back from our first trip to Yellowstone- and this book was invaluable to us.
We took it with us as we went to the various geyser basins. It was incredibly helpful!

We read about the geysers,hot springs, fumuroles and mud pots as we got to each one.

The book also has great color photos of each feature.

It is broken down into these sections:
* Geyser Life
* Mammoth Hot Spring Terraces
* Norris Geyser Basin
* Gibbon Geyser Basin
* Lower Geyser Basin
* Midway Geyser Basin
* Biscuit Geyser Basin
* Black Sand Basin
* Upper Geyser Basin
* Shoshone Geyser Basin
* Mud Volcano Area
* West Thumb Geyser Basin
* Heart Lake Geyser Basin
* New Zealand - (3 hot springs)

As an example, here's what the book says about Fountain Paint Pots (in the Lower Geyser Basin):
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Temperature= 202.8 degrees F
Dimensions: 80 X 40 feet

Fountain Paint Pots was originally named "Mud Puff" by the 1871 Hayden survey and later turn-of-the-century tourists called it Mammoth Paint Pots.But guide books referred to the area as Fountain Geyser and Paintpots and the name was adopted in 1927.

The mud is composed of clay and fine particles of silica broken down by acids and grinding action.
The tinting of the mud in colors of pink and gray from iron oxides is derived from the original rock.
The bubbling action results in escaping steam and gasses- mainly carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide.

In the spring and early summer the mud is thin and the pots boil. By late summer and fall there is less moisture and the mud is thicker, creating unusual shapes and formations.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The only gripe that I have about this book is that it does not list every single feature.
There is a map at the beginning of each section- in red are the features that are talked about- and in black are the ones that are not mentioned.

In the Lower Geyser Basin- there were several feautures that we came to that were not talked about in the book, such as:
Leather Pool, Celestine Pool, Firehole Pool and Surprise Pool, Hot Lake, Jet Geyser, Twig Geyser, etc...

In the Midway Geyser Basin, Opal Pool is not talked about. We walked up to it and wanted to know more about it.

But I do highly recommend this book.
Most of the features are listed. The author talks about the history and goes into detail about the characteristics about the features.
I recommend this book for anyone taking their first trip to Yellowstone. Take this book along with you as you tour the fascinating geological features of the park.You will be glad that you had this helpful guide.
This book also is great for everyone who loves Yellowstone and would like to learn more about the magic of this park.

4 out of 5 stars A very useful book when touring Yellowstone National Park........1998-11-13

I took my family to Yellowstone National Park hoping to see some of the more unusual geysers in action. Carl Schreier's book was a great help in choosing which geysers to wait for to see the eruptions. For each geyser, hot spring, and fumarole, Schreier's book contains a photo and interesting information concerning the discovery of the various thermal sights, and an accurate description of the interval and duration of the geysers. Everyone in our family was reading it.

        Book Description

        Feeling the need to reorient his inner compass, filmmaker Kevin Kertscher set out on a personal journey across large expanses of the African continent.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable account from a traveller, for other travellers.......2004-01-21

        I too could not put this book down. It is very engrossing and it keeps you entertained. I don't see why so many are affected/offended by its simplicity, as I don't think it was ever meant to compete with any in-depth literary accounts (The Little Prince is a simple story, yet still a thoughtful read). It is an honest tale from an innocent, often amusing, perspective. It strikes a particular chord with other travellers though. I have been to Africa but plan on doing a fairly similar, if more extensive, journey through the continent- yet, books like this one are often the only invaluable insight on street-smarts and dealings with locals. Granted it is dated, it still provides bits and glimpses into what these cultures entail. I only wish the author continued his story, with accounts of his explorations in Asia.

        3 out of 5 stars Good reading.......2003-01-30

        This book talks about the author's experience traveling through many parts of Africa. The style of writing was simple and fun. However, the writer could have made more of an effort to learn about the people who live at the places he visited. At times, I felt he was traveling just for the sake of traveling.

        4 out of 5 stars hm.......2002-06-16

        I actually had the privelidge of meeting the author at a bookstore where he was handing out his john hancock.. I rather scared him I think...

        but then again I suppose it is odd for an 11 year old to come up to you and start talking about the time she mummified a chicken.. but no matter

        This book was fairly interesting, and though I don't remember the particulars, his journey through Africa was well described and worth reading if you are interesting in traversing the continent (I don't happen to be interested in doing so- but then again I'm not the traveling sort)

        5 out of 5 stars KERTSCHER GOT IT RIGHT!.......2001-08-29

        If you've been there, you'll recognize some of your own fantastic experiences; if you haven't been, READ THIS FIRST.

        Kevin Kertscher's Africa Solo is the account of the kind of trek that just cannot be undertaken right now, and so it's worth reading for both its historical and its sociological value. Although it is different from many travel books in that it focuses on individual experience rather than history or events, the book offers a different kind of education: a single person's insight and experience.

        In the late 1980s, Kertscher trekked - mostly by hitchhiking, with some walking and one plane trip - through West, Central, and East Africa, taking a winding path from Oran in Algeria to Nairobi in Kenya. He also traveled mostly alone, which gave him a lot more exposure to the continent, and put him in more danger as well. An average person like Kertscher probably could not duplicate this trip today; political instability and unrest have rendered many of the countries he visited more dangerous for foreigners, as well as altering the areas through which he traveled significantly since his journey.

        That change is one of the primary reasons why Kertscher's book is still worth reading - he provides an account of an older Africa the one that gave birth to the current one. His observations of Mobutu's Zaire, while not as detailed as Helen Winternitz's in East Along the Equator, explain a great deal about the current situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. And his account of Rwanda during a break in its long history of conflict is surprising - he describes it as one of the most peaceful and progressive countries in Africa.

        The personal perspective of the book - the author's solo movement through the continent, relying mostly on others for transportation - is also valuable; I got a better sense of the regional differences in the people than I have from other Africa books. Kertscher also experienced much more than most travelers do of the kindness of strangers in Africa; in his sort of travel, he was forced to rely on others, and it impressed me how often those others came through for him. I can't say I'd travel the way he did, but the results were apparently better than I would have expected.

        All in all, this is an engrossing read that provides a personal perspective on one portion of a very large place. Africa Solo should not be used as a guidebook, because of the many changes in the area, but cultures do change more slowly than governments, so perhaps a person planning a trip to the area would still benefit from this book. Certainly armchair travelers will enjoy it.

        Princess just want to have fun

        This spring, Mia's determined to have a good time, despite the fact that the student government over which she presides is suddenly broke. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) Grandmère has an elaborate scheme to simultaneously raise money, catapult Mia to theatrical fame, and link her romantically with an eligible teen bachelor, not her boyfriend. It's no wonder that Michael, the love of her life, seems to think she's a psycho, or worse: not much fun.

        Princess Mia is back in this seventh installment of the popular PRINCESS DIARIES series, and, as usual, she's facing more problems than she knows what to do with. She's recently been elected student body president, which shouldn't really be that difficult a job since she's been in training to rule her own county someday, but it turns out that the student government is broke.

        As if that weren't enough, Lilly starts a new literary magazine, calls it Fat Louie's Pink Butthole, and wants to publish Mia's story about "The Guy Who Hates It When They Put Corn in the Chili," a story that Mia would rather the entire student body not read.

        Luckily (or not so luckily, depending on how you look at it), there's Grandmere to the rescue, and she's got a plan to help Mia's financial situation, social situation, and romantic situation all at once (not that Mia was aware she had a romantic "situation" in the first place). Unfortunately, Mia's romantic issues become all too clear when Michael decides to throw a party, and Mia starts freaking out because she's not a "party girl."

        Fans of the previous PRINCESS DIARIES books won't want to miss this and will definitely enjoy reading along as Mia shares her crazy high school experiences through her journal. Meg Cabot's writing is light and breezy as always, and perfect for a lazy afternoon.

        It may be some time before Princess Mia rules Genovia, but she is already getting a taste of governing as the President of the student body of her school. It is not going well. With three months left until the commencement, Mia is faced with bankruptcy and being unable to pay for the ceremony to be held at Lincoln Center. She does not want to resort to selling candles to make up the deficit, but that is a more appealing idea than having the valevictorian cause her bodily harm, if she can get past Lars, Mia's bodyguard. However, Grandmere has an idea. Unfortunately, when Grandmere or the princess' best friend, Lily, has an idea, Mia knows life is about to get "interesting," in the worst sense of the word. She's already dealing with a mountain of potential fall-out from Lilly's idea of creating a school-based literary journal whose sales will go toward meeting the budget. Now, Grandmere has the bright idea to put on a show. Her delivery of the suggesting somehow lacks the perkiness of Judy Garland telling Mickey Rooney that is what they ought to do. Now that the Queen Mother has spoken, so shall it be done. Being beaten senseless by an irate senior might be a better fate!

        **** Mia's trials and tribulations continue to charm and amuse readers of all ages. Her angst has a ring of truth, even in the most ridiculous situations. Subtle in-jokes enhance the humor. If you need a laugh, or just to be reassured that things will get better, pick up a Princess story. ****

        4 out of 5 stars Princess Not Fun?! By Ariel Anand.......2007-03-23

        Princess Mia has a BIG problem. She is a fifteen-year-old girl living in a loft with her mom, stepdad, and baby brother in New York. She has triangular shaped short hair, a flat chest and a horrible social status. She is commonly called "freak". She goes to Albert Einstein High School and she's the student council president. She's heir to the throne of a small country called Genovia. Most people would think that being a princess is great. You'd get whatever you wanted. But that's so not true. Mia HATES being a princess. But the real problem is, she is completely broke. Or at least the student government of AEHS is broke. But her job as student council president is to keep track over everything. Unfortunately, the treasurer didn't really do a good job of saving money. So now, Mia is stuck trying to raise $5,728 for the Senior's Commencement Ceremony in June. Amber Cheeseman was going to kill her for losing all the money. Amber was the senior valedictorian and she was a black belt in karate. She was going to destroy Mia. So Mia has to star in her evil grandmother's musical or else her grandmother would tell Amber about the money problem. All the money raised from the musical would go towards the student council fund. And of course, Mia gets the lead. Could her life be any more difficult? Oh yeah, her boyfriend asked her to go to a COLLEGE party. Mia has never truly been to a college party before. She has no idea what to do. She tries to convince herself that she's a party girl but inside, she knows she isn't. She goes to seek advice on how to party like Paris Hilton. She tries hard to cheer herself up by making snacks for the party and dressing great. But when she does go to the party, she makes a complete fool out of herself. She has a beer and is completely ashamed of what happens. Mia thinks that her boyfriend, Michael, won't like for what she's done. Michael doesn't talk to Mia for days. But that's only because Michael's parents are splitting up and Michael is going through a bad time. But in the end, Michael forgives Mia for humiliating him and her, too. He explains to her what was wrong with his family and she really understands. Also, the student government makes enough money to fund the Senior's Commencement Ceremony and Amber doesn't know anything. Mia's grandmother gives her the check for $5,728. Even her grandmother says that Mia did an amazing job performing onstage. Mia is very pleased and happy. The musical turns out to be a hit! Her grandmother got off her case and Mia is finally free from it all. Now she doesn't have to worry about anything... for only a little while, though.

Grandmere decided to embrace her creative side and give a chance to students of AHEAS a chance to shine!
        To give the story a bit of spice Meg Cabot added another male in Mia's life that could stir some problems between her and Michael.
        I have grown up reading this book and I still find it more interesting than the previous. If any fan has felt the books have began to get to repetitive this book will change your judgment, it's a well recommended book to any Meg Cabot fan.

                    5 out of 5 stars Sometimes there actually are winners in a war........2003-03-16

                    "Dry Tears" is an autobiographical recollection of life in wartime Poland, during the Holocaust. Not only did the author and her sister have to "pass" as non-Jews and live in constant terror of being caught, they also had to worry about their parents, who couldn't "pass" and who lived in hiding.

                    I've read perhaps a dozen books by Holocaust survivors. This may be the first time that I thought about each individual murder as that: an individual murder, and not as genocide. What happened to the girls' governess in the early pages of the book left me more sleepless than anything since "Anne Frank."

                    Sometimes, however, there are the occasional winners in a war. The author's family survived as an intact unit. That, dear readers, is a victory.

                    This book belongs in every historian's library, be it public or personal. Deeply moving, it's not too much for a mature teen to read, and I will be suggesting it to a friend's young adults.

                    "Dry Tears" will haunt me for a long time.

                    4 out of 5 stars Fascinating and deeply moving.......2002-11-21

                    Dry Tears is an unforgettable Holocaust memoir and coming-of age story. Tec is a gifted writer and her comments about her experiences are deeply insightful.

                    Tec was hidden during the war---disguised as a Polish Christian, she lived with a variety of families before settling with a working-class family who also took in her parents (neither of whom spoke Polish well enough to "pass") and her sister.

                    What is most interesting (and depressing) about Tec's story is her slow realization that the family who took her in was anti-semetic. As a child, she experiences deep confusion about this and wonders how she should feel when the family compliments her by telling her that she is not "like a Jew." Her conflicted feelings about this family (she grows to love and respect them while at the same time being appalled by their prejudice) illustrate one of the greatest paradoxes regarding prejudices (***). The sad truth is that when one looks behind the stereotype one always discovers individuals who defy the stereotype (Tec herself experiences this---she assumes that one of the woman who takes them in---Stella--is a typically stupid and lazy member of the working class but when Stella is tortured by the Nazis and refuses to eveal any information, Tec is forced to look beyond the stereotype todiscover a very real and very complicated individual).

                    Tec's story also explores an aspect often not found in books dealing with adults under the Holocaust. As a hidden child who could "pass" as a Polish Christian, Tec spent her days as Krysia, a Polish Gentile. Not surprisingly, this caused her to become deeply confused about who she was---like all pre-teens and adolescents, Tec was struggling to discover her own identity but unlike her peers, Tec was forced to hide this identity.

                    I have read a great number of Holocaust memoirs---and this is not the "typical" memoir (as far as one can say there is a "typical" memoir). Several factors make this book unique---Tec's age at the time of the Holocaust, her insights into her own experiences (not surprising as Tec later became a scholar specializing in this period) and her openness about her struggle to assume an identity at a time when she was forbidden to assume her true identity.

                    4 out of 5 stars A Lesson on Survival.......2000-01-04

                    "Dry Tears" is a memoir of the author during the years she and her family struggled for survival in occupied Poland. After many attempts to escape Nazi officials, they find shelter in a small town under the protection of a peasant Polish family, in exchange for financial benefits. The story is a lesson on faith, of compliance to ever adjusting circumstances in an environment filled with prejudice and ignorance. Well written, with no high literary aspirations, but with a high moral content. This is a must for adolescents and pre-adolescents, and for anyone who is not aware of what it really means to face adverse circumstances in life.

                    5 out of 5 stars Faith, Hope & Love.......1998-06-03

                    Dry Tears,dealt with the survival of a Jewish family during the Nazi Holocaust. The story is told by the youngest daughter, Tec, during her pre-adolescent years. If one does not fully comprehend the power of faith, hope and love, then this book is a must. It is a lesson for any family, group or individual who is struggling with circumstances that seem overwhelming or out of control.
