I too had to read this horrible waste of a tree for my history class - i thought it was and intresting story the whole rags to riches thing but i never finished a single chapter because i didnt have the will power to push through the dryness of this book, most often i even fell asleep. livesay may have acuratley described the rise of andrew carnegie but this book is crap - only a true history nut would find any enjoyment in the book, and thats pushing it

1 out of 5 stars Worst Book Ever.......2004-09-21

"Andrew Carnegie: and the Rise of Big Business" was the worst book I have ever read. I went into reading it with an open mind, and after the first chapter I wanted to pull my hair out it was so boring.
First off, the book took place in a time period where I wasn't even born. My parents weren't even born yet. It has to do with a subject that I don't even know about.
Second, the author dragged on and on about numbers and business partners and business investments. He was using words that were not in my vocabulary.
Finally, the plot and main ideas of the book were so slow. They jumped around and I didn't know what business we were talking about, or which business partner was involved. They talked about money and finances.

1 out of 5 stars boring book.......2004-09-21

Andrew Carnegie was such a boring book, especially if you hate history. I couldn't get interested in it. It went too much in depth with numbers and statistics. Those things took away from what,I think, the author was trying to get the readers to understand.
Every time I read it I would lose interest right away!! One paragraph and I was gone. I would even fall asleep when reading it!!! I had to re-read sections multiple times because I couldn't even tell you what I was reading. It went in one ear and out the other. I had to make sure I understood it though because I had to write a 5 page paper on it for my history class.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Book.......2004-09-21

I was required to read this book for my history class. It was probably the most boring book that I have ever read. Every time I started to read it I would fall asleep. I tried to read a chapter each day, but I ended up reading a page or two then passing out. The book goes too far into specifics and numbers in certain areas of his life which takes away from the story. This made the book almost unbearable to read. If you are having trouble sleeping at night then you should go out and buy this book, but if you are looking for a good read, think again.

1 out of 5 stars Worst required reading..........2004-09-21

I was required to read Andrew Carnegie and the Rise of Big Business for my history class. Not only did were we requiered to read this dry biography, but we then had to write a 5-7 page paper on what we thought the themes of the book were. However, the book is so bogged down with numbers and informatin about how he did EVERYTHING in excessive detail, that it is hard to focus on the reading yet alone find the themes within it.
I have no doubt that Andrew Carnegie was a great man and accomplished some great feats, but who cares EXACTLY how he did it and what the exact numbers were? I think the book would have been a much better read if Harold Livesay, the author, had simlpy told the story of Carnegies life. All the statistics were overkill.
In addition to continually beating an already dead horse, Livesay went into more depth than neccessary with the details of how Andrew did things. A simple explanation of a series of events would have been sufficiant. I think more people would be able to read and even enjoy Andrew Carnegie's life story had the author left out all the fluff.

              Book Description

The inspiring story of one woman's journey of healing and transformation.

Sara Hall's life seemed perfect: a wealthy husband, a big house in an affluent suburb, three healthy children. But the surface of Hall's life hid a marriage filled with sorrow and pain. One day, at age forty-two, Hall sees a lone figure rowing in the harbor, and that image becomes her holy grail.

In this richly layered memoir, the author tells how her determination to master rowing a single shell gave her the courage to free herself from the dark forces of abuse in her childhood and the failure of her marriage. In lyrical prose, Hall describes the rigors of rowing, the elation of winning, the joy of total engagement in passionate enterprise, and the triumph of breaking free. Ultimately, she declares sovereignty over her life and wins a world championship gold medal. Drawn to the Rhythm is a brave and soulful book, written for all women who seek to find their strength and voice. 16 pages of b/w photographs. Reading group guide included.

1 out of 5 stars Engine Room Starboard.......2007-06-18

I borrowed a teammate's copy of this book and was disappointed. I would agree Ms. Hall has certain gifts as a writer and I'm sure journaling this was therapeutic for her, but I think I'd like to read her husband's account as well - like the old saying goes, it takes two to tango. Fortunately most gen x women finally understand that economic self-sufficiency & having one's own career is the way to go from the beginning (i.e., to avoid dependence on another).

              5 out of 5 stars Hmm -interesting.......2007-06-07

I've read Sara Hall's book a couple of times. She's a fantastic writer.

Some of the recent reviews are interesting. It's my impression that Ms. Hall downplayed her absusive husband and in fact treated him with not just kindness but with necessary kid gloves in her portrayal.

Her book reminded me of other women I know who have been in non physically abusive marriages. The horror of her truly sociopathic husband is evident between the lines in her book. What actually took place in her marriage is likely far worse than the reader can imagine.

Curiously enough after reading Hall's book the last two reviews seem as if they could have been written by a very angry, very disturbed ex-huband.

I hope that Ms. Hall has moved on. Her book demonstrates that she has the pluck to do just that. Somehow I doubt very much that her ex-huband does

              1 out of 5 stars NOT Drawn..........2006-07-22

Many reviews led me to believe this book would be inspirational... but I just found myself thinking that Sara Hall was the most histrionic writer that I have read in years... her approach to her children was deplorable, her constant perseveration and use of unnecessary language made the book difficult to finish. HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED!!!

1 out of 5 stars Definitely NOT Drawn to Sara Hall's Rhythm!.......2004-03-18

The Rhythm in Sara Hall's book is NOT sculling, as one is led to believe in the reviews. The book is a self-serving account of Ms Hall's priviledged life in which she seeks to blame her dispair in her adult life on incidents of abuse in her preteen years. She ridicules her life as a mother, trivializing the importance of being a presence in her childrens early years. Her life with her husband IS tragic, is it any of our business? She wants us to believe that winning is not what is important to her, yet the bulk of discussion on rowing focused on her accomplishments, placements, and medals. This is one of the worst books I have ever read, a complete disappointment.

              4 out of 5 stars Rowing & Life Interwoven.......2003-06-03

I bought this book because it's about rowing, but soon found that its power lay in the way Hall described her terrible marriage and the freedom she earned by taking up sculling. Certainly it became overly introspective at some points, but as I read I was willing Hall to break free, aware of the inevitable conclusion but entranced by her impending triumph. I usually discard such personal memoirs halfway through, but this work kept me engrossed until the end.

                  Product Description

More than any other avant-garde movement, German Expressionism captures the revolutionary intensity of twentieth-century modernity in all its contrasts and conflicts. In continuous eruptions from 1905 to 1925, Expressionism upset reigning practices in the arts: in its most representative genre of painting and the visual arts, powerful figurations and dynamic abstractions supplanted placid realism, and a palette of vividly luminescent colors eclipsed subdued earth tones. In literature, the change was equally stark: a heady intellectualism combined with dramatic gesture, graphic visions, exuberant emotions and urgent proclamations --along with a new sense of the unexplored potency and potential of raw language -- to forge forceful styles of verbal expression. Expressionism introduced into art, both visual and verbal, a shockingly new intensity with many facets and many faces. This volume presents German Expressionism in terms of its literature, which is far less known in the English-speaking world, with essays by leading scholars on Expressionism's philosophical origins, its thematic preoccupations, and its divergent stylistic manifestations in and across different genres by writers whose common bond is intensity and whose lines on the page read like the gouges of a woodcut. An interdisciplinary section addresses Expressionism's gender relations, how women appeared in the literature and then disappeared from literary history, and how the aesthetic impulses of Expressionism entered into film as a new technology of expression, a new form of visual narrative. This volume demonstrates how, between its origins in philosophy and its afterlife in film, Expressionism's aesthetic energies stretched and revised the boundaries of conventional literary genres into drastically new and different forms: in many ways, the margins are central to the experimental art of Expressionism. This volume features figures such as Georg Kaiser, Walter Hasenclever, and Ernst Toller in drama; Gottfried Benn, Georg Heym, Else Lasker-Schüler, and Georg Trakl in poetry; Alfred Döblin, Carl Einstein, and Carl Sternheim in prose, to name just a few. Against the background of the journals, exhibitions, and anthologies, the café meeting places and public life of Expressionism, the volume's highly focused, intrinsic analyses of texts and comprehensive overviews of extrinsic contexts (and of the most up-to-date research) shows the fervor and complexity of the period and its effulgent literary formations. Neil H. Donahue is Professor of German and Comparative Literature at Hofstra University.

Excerpted from Touched By The Jacksons by Phoenix. Copyright © 1998. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved From Prelude: Awesome! I couldn't believe my eyes! Nothing could have prepared me for what I had just witnessed. I sat on the floor in front of our floor model TV with my mouth gaping open and my eyes fixated on the TV screen watching what was about to influence me for the rest of my life. I was mesmerized - this was the greatest thing I had ever seen in my whole life! I was watching "The Ed Sullivan Show" and these five young brothers from Gary, Indiana just blew me away with their dance steps, their costumes, their energy, their screaming fans! This was the national television debut of the Jackson Five and I'll never forget it. As the Jackson brothers performed a great rendition of Sly and the Family Stone's song entitled "Stand," their funky choreographed steps and perfectly harmonized singing had captivated me. As I watched the young, lead singer, better known as Michael Jackson, pour his heart out to the lyrics of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' hit song "Who's Loving! You," I could only imagine the hysterical girls screaming and going crazy over him! I knew right then and there that I wanted to be a "star," just like one of the Jackson Five. After experiencing and seeing what effect the Jackson Five had on their fans, I realized at age 5 that this is what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to do what they did: make people happy, bringing fulfillment and joy, to my adoring, screaming fans all over the world.

From that moment on, I became a true fan, tuning in to every television show that they were appearing on, including their own Saturday morning cartoons, and buying fan magazines and everything else I could find with their names plastered on it. I remember eating bowls upon bowls of cereal just to get to the cut out cardboard record of the Jackson Five on the back of the box! And fighting with my 7 siblings because I didn't want to share them with anyone! After all they were America's first Black, young, "Bubble gum," teen idol, heart-throbs, and above that they were gifted and talented far beyond their years. These 5 young brothers were definitely here to stay for many years to come. They put so much heart and soul into their performance, individually and collectively, and generated so much power that you couldn't help but be absorbed by their talent, charm, and love like it was osmosis. I thank God for the Jacksons because their American Dream was a dream come true. I thank all of the Jacksons for making the dream a reality because I have been Touched by the Jacksons.

At some point in time we need something to cling to. For the author, the Jacksons were the remedy! Think of it as parallel lives. A young man from Brooklyn who grows up worshipping the Jacksons and is able to parlay that worship into a career as a Michael Jackson impersonater. Phoenix does a masterful job transporting you back to the late 60s, early 70s, so you are right there as the Jacksons begin their climb to fame How his love of the Jacksons, and becoming a performer just like them, shaped his life. Allowed him to survive growing up in a climate of drugs and assorted family tragedies. The journey from youth to manhood, with all its successes and dark times, is gripping. Sometimes even mirroring the trials and tribulations of the Jackson family.

Delightful! Entertaining! Inspirational! Lasting Memories is the perfect guidebook for anyone interested in preserving memories of the past and present for future generations! It contains numerous examples, not only from the author's own scrapbooks, but also from a lot of other scrapbooks including ones made by Thomas Jefferson. This highly readable book gives complete instructions about everything one needs to know to get started or to improve scrapbooks in progress. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Read it twice...best MLM self help book out there!.......2006-01-16

I met John Kalench before he died of cancer. What a 'down to earth' successful man! His goal was to have one million friends in his lifetime and I'm sure he did just that...I was one. I was inspired by his book and encouraged to dream again and help others acheive their dreams. There's so much to learn from John and this book. He is very motivational and has lived his concepts. This book would benefit any self-employed, direct sales person or just the person who wants to learn how to dream big dreams again and inspire others! I even has his autograph in my own book:)

                      4 out of 5 stars A Good Beginner's Guide.......2005-11-17

John Kalench was one of the best MLM Trainers in the Industry! I've read this book more than 5 times throughout the last 3 years, and I must say most of the content is still relevant for today's sophisticated networkers.

However the only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it has NOT included any Blow-By-Blow Exposé of the techniques real life Master Networkers would use to change the beliefs and behavior of their prospects.

                      5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-02-21

Easy to read. Author is real and knows what he is about. Full to the brim with tips and knowledge

John Kalench's book is now the corner stone provided for all UK Nikken Independent Distributors. He himself saw how good being a Nikken Distributor was and this, in over 20yrs of training many MLM distributors was the only Company that attracted him. He joined in 1994.

It is a great shame that he died in May 2000, however, with great books like this being available his memory will live on.

I've read mine 3 times and keep it close to hand as an easy source of reference. Sort out your life - this book will show you how.

                      Enjoy your order. Derek Ford
