Book Description
In this, his second book of photographs, Antonin Kratochvil turns his camera away from the human catastrophe and destruction he portrayed in Eastern Europe to reveal another side of modernity -- the broad-reaching spectrum of the entertainment industry. Kratochvil's unique take on the famous and fashionable is not the candy-coated imagery so prevalent in today's fashion and movie magazines. His work underscores the physical and psychological intensity of the creative men and women who have sat before his camera, with images not designed to flatter but rather created to reveal something, possibly hidden, below the surface. Mostly taken on assignment for Detour, W, GQ, and Premiere, Kratochvil's celebrity portraits have never before been assembled in a book. Among those who have inspired Kratochvil to do some of his best work are Liv Tyler, David Bowie, Willem Dafoe, Jean Reno, Billy Bob Thornton, Bernardo Bertolucci, Peggy Cohen, Rob Morrow, Jessica Lang, Bob Dylan, and Patricia Arquette. Incognito is accompanied by an introduction by writer, actor, and director Billy Bob Thornton and an interview with Mark Jacobson.

Solid.......2004-01-11
I own this book. Very good, maybe a bit too commercial but his pictures are terrific. Try also other titles under Kratochvil's name you will not be disappointed.
Reveals the spectrum of entertainment in Europe today.......2001-12-09
Incognito is the second book of photos presented by an artist renowned for his portrayal of catastrophe in Eastern Europe. In this collection he departs from this side to reveal the spectrum of entertainment in Europe today, with black and white photos mostly taken on assignment for four publications. His celebrity portraits have never appeared in book form before, making this accomplishment especially notable.

This fully updated edition of this important and successful book explores in depth the 2002 season as Michael Schumacher equaled Juan-Manuel Fangio's record of five Formula 1 World Championships and 2003 when, after early euphoria, he faced one of the hardest fights of his career against his brother Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya, both driving for Williams, and young Kimi Raikkonen in the McLaren.

Schumacher against history.......2003-08-07
Delves on how Schumacher stacks up against the best drivers
of all time. Contains some interesting anecdotes about
Schumacher finishing a race in the top 10 with the car stuck
in 5th gear! Could have added more anecdotes though. Interesting read nonetheless, finished it in one sitting.

Groucho's disappearing ashes and Errol Flynn's kidnapping. Strange last requests, last promises, last vengeance's. You know them all. California is the place to "go".

Final Curtain a book for those who loved and love the movies.......1999-04-21
In reading Final Curtain I found myself back in the Hollywood of yesteryear with those famous names and people who made HOLLYWOOD and its movies great. I enjoyed the book immensely,Final Curtain is not just a book about death and gravestones, but about the people who gave and used their various talents to entertain.
The book was interest, but contained many inaccuracies........1998-10-30
The book contains many interesting tidbits on famous dead movie stars, but it full of glaring mistakes. For example, in one section on William Randolph Hearst his wife is named as Millicent. However, in the section on Marion Davies his wife is named Pheobe, who is actually his mother. I have found inaccurate dates and locations. One paragraph will contradict another. The amount of errors makes the whole book suspect. Also, directions to some of the stars final resting places is detailed and others not all. For a serious Thantologist, I would only recommend this book for entertainment value.
A so-so book.......1998-06-02
This book has some good stories in it but as far as grave hunting goes, it's not very complete. It's okay to have for entertainment but not as a reference book.
A DELIGHTFUL VIEW OF HOLLYWOOD FROM THE BOTTOM UP!!.......1998-04-02
This book takes you on a wild ride around Hollywood from a most unusual vantage point...underground! Informa- tive, compelling and highly entertain ing, Hudson and Burk bring you amid the funny, the melancholy, and, always captivating lives and deaths of those who have made Tinseltown famous. Our tour brings us to the many large cemetaries in southern California. We are consumed by not only our fond memories of these greater than life legacies, but, by the stone monuments they had left behind. From through the eyes of experienced tour guides, we are brought past these icons, filling our heads with a part of the Hollywood image we never knew. After viewing these haunting images of our own fates, we realize too, that now, we are all much wealthier than any person we had the pleasure of meeting throughout each of our visits to them!

Good book so far........2004-06-14
As a thirteen-year old, I bought this book at Borders as part of my birthday money. It's a wonderful book on checkmating (maybe one of the bests). Although I'm only up to chapter two, the rest of the book will probably be good too.
However, if I could have looked at every checkmating book on Earth, I probably wouldn't have bought this. For example, Fred Reinfeld's "1001 Brilliant Ways to checkmate", probably beats this book by a mile. It's slightly cheaper, I think, and has 698 more diagrams! (I haven't bought this book, but look at the reveiws for it, and you'll know why I'm saying this.)
Even though this probably isn't the greatest checkmating book you can get, it's good enough, and will keep you busy. One more thing: I suggest that you get a used one, because if you want to use about $12.00 or so on a book, don't use it on this one.
Great for Beginners.......2002-09-15
The first hundred checkmate positions are fairly simple for intermediate players. The checkmates start to get somewhat "tricky" after that. I am glad that the authors did not just lump the positions together thematically, such as "Queen Sacrifice," like the Reinfeld "1001 Checkmates." Outstanding diagrams are clear and easy to study. While many of the solutions are simple, they are still beautiful. Great book if you love two and three move checkmate puzzles.
A delightful collection!.......2002-08-21
This book presents fun chess puzzles in an easy to understand, progressively difficult format. While it may be true that these puzzles are carefully constructed rather than the result of actual play, they teach the dynamics of checkmate in a simple, yet challenging way. The puzzles are designed and arranged to show how the various pieces work together in diverse circumstances and how slight changes influence the checkmate. This book teaches how to find that all-important first move in the series of moves that lead to checkmate and is good for young players just getting started and for more advanced players who want to stay sharp.
Ok...but better books out there........2002-04-19
This is book gives you 303 "tricky" checkmates. These mates range from queen sacrafices to pawn promotion checkmates. Most of the problems are so hopeless for the opponet(when you play white black has losing chances). at a glance I could figure out sevral ways to destroy the oppenent without checkmating him. This made solving the problems seem pointless. Don't buy this book if you haven't read 1001 brillian checkmates and 1001 combinations. You get more instructive problems for less. An okay book all-around but much better puzzle books are out there.
Nice Puzzles -- But Are They Practical?.......2000-07-02
This book appears to be a sequel to "202 Surprising Checkmates" by the same authors, and both books appear to be indebted to the much older "1001 Brilliant Ways to Checkmates" for their title. "1001 Checkmates," by Fred Reinfeld, gives hundreds of positions which are apparently drawn from actual game situations, and the student who applies himself to the book can take away practical knowledge that will help in actual play. The positions in "202 Checkmates" and "303 Checkmates" could never be mistaken for actual game situations, and the mating patterns are not normally seen in actual play. Although the book appears to have little practical value, the problems were both challenging and entertaining. If the authors ever write "404 Amazing Checkmates," I'll be sure to add it to my library.

Good material, unforgivable errors!.......2007-09-23
This is a good book for training tactics. The posistions are clear and instructive, and organised by themes so each theme is trained separately. This also means the tacticts are easier to spot and the book will be better suited for beginners/intermediate rather than experts.
However, the one thing you would expect from such a book is give you correct anwers. Unfortunately, a few errors have slipped through in the answers section, where it sometimes fail to give you the best continuation for either one or both sides (and mine is even a "second edition"). It's unforgivable when I have to enter the positions into my computer to get the right answers and the optimal continuation. You'd buy this kind of book so you'd be able to train chess WITHOUT your computer, I would think! At least one star of the rating because of that.
In addition, I'd like to see some more explaination to some of the answers, not just a continuation, given the fact this book will be most suited for beginners/intermediate. Nevertheless, most of the answers are pretty well explained.
Good Gift?.......2007-09-03
As others have noted, this is a basic book about the most fundamental of chess competencies, tactics. It occurs to me that it would be a good gift book for a beginning/intermediate player who's working to improve. (And if you happen to be the someone, it's inexpensive enough to indulge without guilt!)
Other reviewers noted a printing error that omitted of a number of solutions, but that appears to have been corrected in the second edition.
Tactical Mistakes.......2007-03-27
First off this is a good book on tactical puzzles. The bad side is there are a few or more mistakes in the answers. If you have a chess program that can analyze the diagram's then you will find the best answers. A couple of the diagrams were printed wrong. I give it a 3 for average. If it didn't have the printing errors and the errors in a few of the answers I would give it a 5 star rating.

Publishing Mistakes of a Serious Nature otherwise a reasonably good book.......2006-08-12
Can you immagine? Answers missing to problems at the end of this book. Maybe, since mine is a used copy the have corrected this? Well just one star away for this.
The problems presented are good (for those with answers!). They range from easy to inbetween in hardness to solve. 303 is not really a lot compared to "One Thousand and One Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations", "Combination Challenge" and lacks actual explanations found in "Winning Chess Traps for Juniors". All of which stand hand over heals better in particular with answers missing. Would like to see "NEW CORRECTED EDITION" in print then I will add a star (assuming the mistakes are fixed).
If it weren't for one oversight..........2005-03-19
This is a simple book. It presents tactical themes and some exercises for you to work out spotting tactics and executing calculations to win (or draw.)
I agree with another reviewer in stating that a tactics book should not say what's the theme and let the reader identify it him/herself.
I would normally give this book 5 starts but problem 101 is wrong as the authors missed the simple 1...Qf6+ 2.f6 Qxf6#

Companies usually assume if their sales are good, then their brand and reputation must be strong. But all too often, they don't have a clear understanding of the values that drive brand and reputation and actually sustain long-term profitability and growth. This leaves companies vulnerable to dangerous backlash between corporate values, and those of their stakeholders: customers, employees, shareholders, media, government, and community. Even well-known and seemingly successful brands and reputations have suffered from this backlash (e.g. Nike and overseas sweatshops, Wal-Mart and unfair employment practices, McDonald's and obesity issues.) Every stakeholder applies their personal and professional values to judge the performance of a company. Branding expert John Foley has developed the BalancedBrand System, which helps companies assess corporate values, identify potential flashpoints, and align values to build a stronger brand and reputation. BalancedBrand identifies and helps manage the forces that will change the way business does business. Foley and co-author Julie Kendrick have created new tools that build and protect brands and reputations.

Great review for great balance .......2006-02-22
John Foley's approach to combining brand identity with corporate values and culture is a worthwhile strategy to assimilate into one's company. Everyone is aware that a brand will get a customer 'in the door' but Foley's strategy for identifying key stakeholders and keeping them engaged, is a strategy every company should learn how to employ and practice. I would highly reconmend this book to all who are interested in advancing both the mission and bottom line of their companies. This book would have particular appeal to young people entering the work force as a tool for staying engaged with their comapany's customers.
Provocative new insights on growing brands in today's world.......2006-02-22
Finally, an approach that takes branding to the next level! I found Foley's thinking on creating and protecting brands by aligning corporate and stakeholder values to be refreshing and enlightening. Today's news is filled with examples of corporate failure due to scandals, breech of trust, and greed. This only underscores the need to project appropriate values.
Additionally, I believe Foley's perspective on the interdependence of a strong reputation and a strong brand is extremely insightful-bordering on revolutionary. He explores how the effects of competition, abrupt changes in customer preference, skyrocketing promotional costs, and even a company's own actions can erode the brand or reputation.
Foley includes helpful strategies and tools to assess stakeholder alignment and put his systems into practice. I highly recommend this book to anyone charged with managing brands and building corporate growth. In my opinion, this is a very important body of work.

Alignment of the Head, Heart and Hands.......2006-02-14
Balanced Brand by John Foley with Julie Kendrick is a refreshing and enlightening book that helps people focus on alignment of values. It is not every day that business leaders read about the success of their companies from the true alignment of their Head, Heart and Hands. As the book explains the success of companies like Tiffany is due to their focus on employee training on Tiffany's true values-world-class quality( Their Head), uncompromising service( Their Heart) and social responsibility( Their Hands). They have been able to align their values since 1837 by focused training and transfer of their Core Values, which happens to Align with the many stakeholders.
I enjoyed reading and learning from the Balanced Brand and I would recommend this book to all , who are looking to Crystallize their thinking about Brands. This book will help them develop a plan for achieving that goal, develop a sincere desire for the things that are real for them and all of their stakeholders and also to develop supreme confidence in their organization and it's abilities to execute the plan consistently over many decades.

A must-have business book.......2006-02-14
Even as we're feeling we've got all our bases covered, finally, Mr. Foley opens our eyes to a critical consideration too many executives--in both the private and public sectors--have failed to appreciate. He not only does an effective job of presenting and substantiating the problem, he then tells us how to deal with it. I really wish this book had been available a decade or more ago! It should be on every manager's "must read" list.
Led to higher ground..........2006-02-12
Balanced Brand guided me to higher ground.
For nearly two years, my head has been awash in the technology and behavorial shifts accelerating due to internet connectivity globally and what that entails. There is a river of change flowing and it's reaching flood stage. Blogs, podcasts, vlogs, online social networking sites, news aggregation tools (allowing people to scan and consume hundreds of blog posts and news headlines in a single sitting), and instant online conversations about brand-affecting events are facilitating shifts of consciousness and awareness that profoundly effects a brand.
As a consequence of all of these enabling technologies and shifts, there is a new participatory culture emerging which is allowing stakeholders in record numbers to participate vs. just being passive recipients of some miscellaneous communications campaign or messaging thrust...and this emerging culture is out of anyone's control.
Balanced Brand made me stop and reconsider the complexities of all these changes occurring and instead climb to the top of the hill, sit down and look down on the river. I thought about the deeper meanings and strategies required to guarantee the river down below will be navigable...regardless of what technologies or cultures reveal themselves. This book is not about technology or participatory paradigm shifts, however. It's about balance, the essence of a brand, and how to create and utilize balanced brand strategies.
Within its pages is a framework that allows any organization to understand and assess their values, those of their customers, shareholders, employees and communities within which they're involved, and be able to then understand where and how to align them. Though it doesn't say this as overtly as I am, what I thought was obvious was that -- once this work was completed -- strategic direction would be crystal clear.
Once balanced branding strategies are in place, every stakeholder knows what to do. They know what the brand stands for and what it means. Employees know how to perform and use the river-of-change-shifts to facilitate brand enhancement instead of being victims and drowning in it. What hit me squarely due to my involvement in technology, is that a participatory culture can be created that sparks innovation and creativity, grows top-line revenue and customer satisfaction, all of which is of vital importance to management and shareholders.
That was the higher ground I was guided to by Balanced Brand. It helped me focus and see that first-and-foremost it is the essence of the brand and the brand in practice that really matters. Everything else then falls into place.
