Book Description

History has seen only a few women so magical, so evanescent, that they captured the spirit and imagination of their times. Diana, Princess of Wales and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis were two of these rare creatures. They were the most famous women of the twentieth century admired, respected, even adored at times; rebuked, mocked and reviled at others. Separated by nationality and a generation apart, they led two surprisingly similar lives. Both were the daughters of acrimonious divorce. Both wed men twelve years their senior, men who needed "trophy brides" to advance their careers. Both married into powerful and domineering families, who tried, unsuccessfully, to tame their willful independence. Both inherited power through marriage and both rebelled within their official roles, forever crushing the archetype. And both revolutionized dynasties. And yet in many ways they were completely different: Jackie lived her life with an English "stiff upper lip" never complaining, never explaining in the face of immense public curiosity. Diana lived her life with an American "quivering lower lip" with televised tell-alls, exposing her family drama to a world eager for every detail. These two lives have been well documented but never before compared. And never before examined in the context of their times. Jay Mulvaney, author of Kennedy Weddings and Jackie: The Clothes of Camelot, probes the lives of these two twentieth century icons and discovers: The nature of their personalities forged from the cradle by their relationships with their fathers, Black Jack Bouvier and Johnny Spencer.-+Their early years, and their early relationships with men.-+Their marriages, and the truth behind the lies, the betrayals and the arrangements.-+Their greatest achievements: motherhood.-+Their prickly relationships with their august mothers-in-law, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy and Queen Elizabeth II-+ Their lives as single women, working mothers.-+ Their roles as icons and archetypes.Graced with never before seen photographs from many private collections, and painstakingly researched, 0Diana and Jackie presents these two remarkable and unique women as they have never been seen before.

The premise of this book was intriguing and so promising. Sadly, the research appears to be very poor indeed....inconsistencies, light weight and superficial. I was surprised that it wasn't better.

5 out of 5 stars Good Bio about Two Influential People.......2007-06-08

This is a duel biography of Princess Diana and Jackie Kennedy Onaissis.

The book goes into detail about their lives from their early lives in NYC and London, to their parents divorces and remarriages, to their school days, to their time about time, to the men they married, motherhood and after leading up to their deaths.

A very interesting book about The Peoples Princess and the Queen of Camalot

3 out of 5 stars Light Reading at Best.......2006-08-28

"Diana and Jackie" is perfect for light reading, but this book reveals nothing new about either lady, nor does it delve very deeply into either's personality.
While there were certain characteristics that Diana and Jackie both shared (married to powerful men; media princesses; overcoming personal tragedy; mothers to children in the spotlight) there seem to be more differences than similarities. Jackie never aired her dirty laundry in public, while Diana elevated it to an art form. Jackie was well educated and definitely a lady of the world, before marrying Jack Kennedy, while Diana never graduated beyond basic high school education and married Prince Charles before ever truly venturing out in the world on her own. Jackie was brought up to be self-reliant, while Diana depended heavily on a man for her own self-worth. (The story that Diana always felt unwanted, as she was not born a son and an heir simply don't ring true, as her brother was born when she was three years old)
True, the deaths of both ladies hit the public hard. Jackie's was expected, but didn't lessen the sadness. Diana's was unexpected and a shock. Both were stellar mothers, who brought their children up to be independent, sensitive and understanding of the massive media attention placed on them. And their children have been their greatest legacies, so far.
If you want more in-depth looks at their amazing lives, look elsewhere. But for light, easy to digest information, this isn't a bad source.

Good for light bedtime reading, but pretty much re-hashed.

I have to admit I have always been partial to Jacqueline Kennedy: she was intelligent, witty, a natural beauty and had a sense of self. She was well-read, and took an interest in art, music and history. She did not wash her dirty laundry in public.

I was impressed with Diana at first. She seemed fresh, natural and although not really beautiful, certainly made the most of her looks. But, unlike Jackie, who I'm sure had just as many, if not more, difficulties in her life, Diana left no stones unturned to try and draw sympathy to herself and make all who did not kow tow to her wishes look bad. I'll never forget seeing her (on tv) in Australia with Charles. They were at his former school, and he had been asked to play the cello, I think it was. As he played, she got up, crossed right in front of him and sat down at the piano. She started trying to play Rachmaninov, rudely interrupting his little recital. After that, I had no use for her.

Jackie was gracious, Diana was not. So comparisons really are not in order here!

Dear Publishing Industry,

I have not read the book nor do I intend to. I came across it recently through one of your book clubs(to which I belong). It seems that every month you make a point of investing a great deal of time and money into marketing a book about overrated celebrities by star-struck authors.

In this time of soaring unemployment, downsizing and corporate fraud that befall the majority of the population, you choose to release a book which praises two individuals who had never experienced the above injustices but whose families instigated them and themselves contributed nothing to the progress of humanity.

Both Diana and Jackie were born into privilege. Both had the fortune of living in the best neighbourhoods, attending the best schools, socializing with the rich and famous, and not working at all to survive. Both passed on the same experiences to their children.

Paparazzi, constitutional obligations and in-laws who bestow multimillion dollar trust funds on their grandchildren are thankfully not the misfortunes that many single mothers deal with. They are blessed. For they deal with gang leaders who harass kids in low income areas, dumb-downed education system, dead-end jobs to pay for food and apartments smaller than Diana and Jackie's bathtubs, apathetic fathers, humiliation and gender discrimination. Certainly such trivial worries do not merit hundrends of books.

It seems that many talented struggling writers from all cultures, fields and walks of life also do not merit to be published to educate the semi-illiterate public about the many accomplishments of the world. Why not publish books every year about such groundbreaking women as Marie Curie, Susan B. Anthony, Golda Meir, Sofia Kovalevskaya, Billie Jean King, Evita Peron, Simone de Beauvoir, Oriana Fallaci ... (unfortunately the space provided does not allow for all of them to be listed)?

It is also unfortunate that there is not enough space for them in your budget.

From his extensive experience as a Steeplechase rider, he and John Welcome—a fellow best-selling writer—have gathered 28 of the most classic horse racing stories around. The authors range from Arthur Conan Doyle and Beryl Markham to John Taintor Foote and Francis himself. Damon Runyon’s “Pick the Winner” introduces us to the unforgettable, ironically named Hot Horse Herbie and his ever-loving fiancée, Miss Cutie Singleton. This is the official book of record for the 2005 GLITTER AWARDS, a Hollywood-based organization sometimes referred to as "The Gay Oscars." Inside, replete with photos, are descriptions and reviews of the 36 independently produced films, each with gay and/or lesbian content, that were nominated for the 2005 Glitter Awards. This is the only book on the market which, within the pages of a single volume devoted to this intensely creative art form, combines film reviews, interviews with each film's stars, producers, and/or directors, and a compilation of what mainstream critics had to say about each film. It's also an important book of record that documents the sometimes heroic contributions of independent filmmakers to one of the world's most intriguing art forms.

This is the first full-length survey in English of the music of the Flemish composer Orlando di Lasso, one of the most important musical figures of the later 1500s. Eleven essays discuss Lasso's sacred and secular music from many perspectives, including close analysis of the music as well as broader considerations of its position in society, commerce, and liturgy. The influence of Lasso's music on other composers is another major theme in the book.

            Book Description

This book aims to enrich our understanding of the French secular music of Orlando di Lasso, using those songs as a means of understanding a particular community of Renaissance readers and the music books they created. The Lasso chansons dominate many of the anthologies of secular music brought out by firms such as Le Roy et Ballard (in Paris) and Pierre Phalese (in Louvain and Antwerp) during the later years of the sixteenth century. Perhaps less well known, however, is the fact that the chansons of Lasso also figured quite prominently in a number of collections of devotional reworkings of secular songs issued by Protestant printers at about the same time. Scholars have not given much credence to these collections, in which some of Lasso's profane lyrics have been changed to convey spiritual meanings, presumably because the overt presence of strong editorial control suggests remoteness from the authority of compositional intent. This study will use the example of the Lasso chansons and their appropriation by Protestant editors as a means of discovering something of how this repertory was heard and understood by a particular community of listeners during the late sixteenth century. In so doing, it will also explore the history of those chansons in print, and the history of the spiritual attitudes that shaped their reception among the Huguenots.

                  Book Description

After the Mass Ordinary, the Magnificat was the liturgical text most frequently set by Renaissance composers, and Orlando di Lasso's 101 polyphonic settings form the largest and most varied repertory of Magnificats in the history of European music. In the first detailed investigation of this repertory, David Crook focuses on the forty parody or imitation Magnificats, which Lasso based on motets, madrigals, and chansons written by such composers as Josquin and Rore. By examining these Magnificats in their social, historical, and liturgical contexts and in terms of composition theory, Crook opens a new window on the breadth and subtlety of an important composer often harshly judged on his use of preexistent music.

Crook places Lasso amidst the Counter-Reformation reforms at the Bavarian court where he composed the Magnificats, and where there emerged a fanatical Marian cult that favored this genre. In a section on compositional procedure, Crook explains that Lasso abandoned the traditional eight psalm-tone melodies in his imitation Magnificats, considers the new ways he found to represent the tones, and describes how Lasso's experimentation reflected the complex relationship between mode and tone in Renaissance theory and practice. Arguing that Lasso's varied uses of preexistent music defy current definitions of parody technique, Crook, in his final chapter, reveals the imitation Magnificats as vastly more imaginative and innovative than previous characterizations suggest.

Most of us have been conditioned to approach the stock market as a long-term proposition. Many of the bestselling investment books coach readers to seek value in the best companies for long periods of time. Day trading, a recent phenomenon brought on by the reform of the financial markets and by the growth of online trading, goes in just the opposite direction. Instead of buying and holding stocks for years, successful day traders make money by dipping in and out of the market in a matter of minutes, finding profit in the tiny fractions between the bid and asking price of a stock or by catching the ups and downs of stock prices, which are driven by everything including the latest news from CNBC or speculation on what Alan Greenspan ate for breakfast.

In The Electronic Day Trader, authors Marc Friedfertig and George West explain the rationale behind day trading and offer strategies that can help you become successful at this fast game of speculation and timing. The authors write, "Day trading appears so deceptively easy, yet in reality it is a never-ending challenge. It is a game, an opportunity to match wits against the majority and thereby prosper. Day trading the stock market is the ultimate opportunity to speculate and the ultimate game."

The book goes into great detail about how the various stock exchanges work and shows how to get direct access to the NASDAQ through various electronic trading systems. If you're looking for an investment book that will help you build a retirement portfolio, look elsewhere. But if the daily fluctuations in the price of a stock make your heart beat faster and if you're seriously interested in honing your skill as day trader or want to become one, The Electronic Day Trader is definitely worth a look. --Harry C. Edwards

                        Book Description

Marc Freidfertig is the managing member of Broadway Trading LLC, a brokerage firm specializing in online trading, where he has trained hundreds of day traders to cut out the middle people and earn superior returns trading listed securities. Mr. Freidfertig earned his MBA from Columbia Business School, and has also worked with First Boston Corp. and Morgan Stanley. He actively traded index futures as a member of the New York Futures Exchange, and was a member of the American Stock Exchange for eight years, where he supervised and trained traders and was himself one of the top traders.

George West is the president of Broadway Consulting Group as well as managing member of JGM Securities LLC. Mr. West has traded stocks and options on major exchanges and was an options market maker on the American Stock Exchange. While a trader with Spear Leeds & Kellogg, he handled the order flow of large institutional investors. Mr. West graduated from St. Lawrence University and, with coauthor Marc Freidfertig, offers popular seminars on electronic day trading.

3 out of 5 stars Another book with old strategies, however...........2005-02-06

There are some good ideas that you can rescue from this book. Therefore I think you should buy it since you can make much more money and certainly recoup your small investment if you employ 2 o 3 good tips.

Any way, from my point of view a trader must always read as much as he can. There is simply no other way to prepare one self for this difficult yet incredibly rewarding activity, but to learn and put into practice as much ideas as you can, at least by paper trading first.

The are a lot of books on the subject, however many of them where written 2 o 4 years ago and that kind of makes them obsolete in this constantly changing field.

The internet offers great places where you can learn more specialized trading techniques. One of those places that I have found to be worthy is ProfitableStockmarket dotcom.

They focus mainly on momentum trading and employ a rather simple yet effective strategy. I think that for a trader to survive and be profitable, its neccessary to keep their trading as simple as possible. To much confussion and technical indicators will most of the time make you slow in your decisions and froze you up when a good opportunity is right in front of you.

In the end it's all about buying or selling with out hesitation, and doing it over an over again according to your set ups.

1 out of 5 stars What became of Broadway Trading, LLC??.......2004-01-27

They went bankrupt, which is where you would be if you followed West and Friedfertig's methods. The book was a copy of Jack Schwager's Market Wizards series, due to the interviews conducted with "traders". You would be amazed if you saw some of these people and didnt read their words in print. Somehow they would not come off so sharp. Trust me!

Also do you think our authors would be able to spot "managerial talent" over a few aspiring proprietory traders? No they hire guys who have previously filed bankruptcy in their past and pipe up their accomplishments, which are a joke when you realized they bailed on creditors!!

Save yourself a dime and avoid it-if someone gives it to you, and you can't return it, use to start the BBQ grill. I could go on and on about SEC/NASD violation, getting short on a downtick, etc but I wont!

                        1 out of 5 stars Obsolete.......2003-06-28

This book completely fails to realistically convey the relative risks and profit potential for the average wannabe day trader. Im talking about someone with less than a few thousand to play the market. Unless you have big bucks and Level II quotes forget day trading unless you are very lucky. In the trading parlance, I wish I had a short position on this book at its current price, and could cover my short at the current used price! Save your money.

                        5 out of 5 stars good.......2001-07-11

                        good book , nice condition

                        2 out of 5 stars essentially obsolete.......2001-05-07

This book is essentially obsolete just three years after its publication. Stocks are now traded in decimals, and the spreads on heavily traded stocks are now almost nonexistent, sometimes being less than one cent a share. Consequently, you can forget about any of the strategies or information regarding "pocketing the spread", "getting between the spread", etc. With the proliferation of ECN trading, the influence of the market makers in a stock has been markedly reduced. In a stock that trades 80 million shares per day, a market maker with a 100,000 share block is not going to be able to move the stock significantly, and ECN trading can overwhelm his influence. Likewise, information gleaned from the Level II screen, while still useful if one knows what to look for, is no longer the Holy Grail. Also, day trading firms, like the authors' "Broadway Trading" are on the way to extinction, now that some big online brokers offer direct-access trades for less than a quarter of what day trading firms charge, as well as offering free Level II quotes and other information not available to the day trading firms.

While the book contains a few nuggets of trading info, it was not written in a logical, easy to follow manner. As has always been the case, aspiring traders need to study the markets intensely and develop their own trading techniques; they cannot expect that any book will teach them how to be successful in a field where very few people ever succeed.
