Book Description

Now in paperback, Eleanor Roosevelt's grandson offers a unique look at one of the most beloved first ladies of the 20th century. Until her death when he was 20, David B. Roosevelt enjoyed a close relationship with his Grandmere, Eleanor Roosevelt. Although she was admired by millions around the world, few people knew her as her loved ones did. Now David shares personal family stories and photographs that show Eleanor as she really was: passionate, vulnerable, courageous, and determined to live her private and personal life according to the humanitarian ideals she cherished. From her unhappy, sheltered childhood to the powerful partnership forged by her marriage to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, to her remarkable achievements as a champion of human rights, this blend of fond remembrance and impeccable research offers a rare, intimate glimpse into the life of a fascinating woman whose legacy continues today.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing New!.......2003-03-06

This rather short coffee-table book is most notable for its collection of photos of Eleanor Roosevelt and her family. The photos are extensive, and a few have not been seen before by non-historians like myself. Otherwise, there was almost nothing new to be learned about this very remarkable and intelligent woman, much to my disappointment! Most amazing was that her grandson actually admitted that he was ignorant of her role on the public stage until her death when he was 20 years old!

I love everything and every pictures too. Thank you.

Book Description

Let the irrepressible president of the Philadelphia 76ers show you how to succeed in this invaluable blueprint for business and life.

A pioneer in the sports physical therapy industry, Pat Croce went from the training room to the boardroom in one of the most unlikely stories in sports history -- a classic rags-to-riches tale made possible by his indestructible positive attitude. With the same unstoppable character that has made him a favorite motivational speaker of Fortune 500 executives, Croce recounts the moments that taught him to strive for and achieve greatness.

But I Feel Great and You Will Too! is more than just the story of one man's remarkable journey. Throughout this moving, often hilarious, and always brutally honest book, Croce hits you with pointers on goal setting, communication, creative thinking, desire, dedication, and much more. Croce also includes his "Ten Commandments of Customer Service," the same guidelines he used to become one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the sports industry.

1 out of 5 stars Candles and you.......2007-02-15

One reviewer (from Moscow, Russian Federation) wrote:

"It is expecting success in the future and doing the best you can to help God make you prosper (and this does not mean lighting lots of candles in churches, at least not limited by that). "

Maybe the reviewer doesn't realize that God can only communicate via candles, which is why we light them. To omit the candles would be to nullify any aspect of the wish / prayer.

5 out of 5 stars Do Good, Have Fun, and Enjoy the Wealth!!.......2003-11-26

There are several bloody good points in Pat Croce's book "I Feel Great and you will too!"

First and foremost, it is the power of positive attitude. According to Pat, it was his permanently positive attitude that helped him score big in life. A positive attitude, in turn, comes in several dimensions. It is self-confidence and sincere believing that life is an extremely great thing to experience. It is expecting success in the future and doing the best you can to help God make you prosper (and this does not mean lighting lots of candles in churches, at least not limited by that). It is pushing other people's limits, helping them achieve more than they have even dreamed of. It is "doing good" to "do well". And this all genuinely generates your excitement and further reinforces your positive attitude.

Pat also stresses the importance of balancing your passion and tolerance, the Yang and Yin, in doing things. Being an extremely choleric person himself, Pat emphaqsizes the importance of cultivating tolerance and caring, the Yin, while it is clear from the book that the lack of Yang (agression, energy and passion), or over-restraint of your Yang, can damage the optimal balance as much.

You have to have enough passion and energy to quickly rush into doing what you think is good and worthwile, to "buy" the minds and souls of your pals into the idea; but you also have to sometimes calm yourself down, sit still, and listen to the emotions, concerns and advice of others. Or, more in Pat Croce's style, to restraint yourself from getting too hot and breaking the skull & bones and ripping off the heart of someone who dared to say a bad word to you. And that all requires a good deal of Yin.

Being a physical therapist himself, Pat shamelessly advertises the healthy lifestyle (physical therapy in particular), and does that so damn great, that I just couldn't keep myself from going to the gym the day I finished his book. So if you wish you had yet another stimulus to get yourself to a fitness center - this book will be a double benefit for you.

Overall, the book is mostly a fun read, tells lots of interesting stories, and gives plenty of great advices. It also motivates you to do good things, become rich, engage in sport, and enjoy your life to the fulliest. A great book.

P.S. I recently heard Pat Croce live, and it's nice to see that he learns and progresses. His motivational speech was mostly based on the facts from this book, but they were used more skillfully and also demonstrated some important points that this book does not make clear. Holla at you, Pat!

4 out of 5 stars Pat Croce feels great and I do too!.......2003-10-01

whether or not you know the name pat croce, once you read his inspirational story you can't help but know the name. his motivation and drive launched him from the training room of sports injuries to the front office of sports ownership. an endless go-getter who went and got, pat croce reminds the reader to be hopelessly positive. his 'ten commandments of customer service' is a bible of business. and if owning the 76ers basketball team and starting the high-altitude Slamball league weren't enough, Pat Croce is also a highly motivated motivational speaker, author, television personality, and as his book says 'big scorer.' he'll tell you the secrets to being able to drain that 3-pointer, block that kick, and make that sale (though not all at the same time)! don't think of him so much as an 'entrepreneur' but more as an 'encourageneur.' he even inspired me to write this review! read this book!

4 out of 5 stars Just READ it Now!.......2003-07-10

There are useful pointers when you don't have the time to go through the 2nd or 3rd time. Also, Pat gets straight to the issues (i.e. not beating around the bush) to lengthen the book.

Trust me, it is worth your time and money. And yes, I FEEL GREAT !!! after reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars I Feel Great and You Will Too!.......2003-01-02

I have followed the work and success of Pat Croce during the past 20 years. His life is the classic American rages to riches story. He is in your face with challenges, no excuses given or taken. His books [also 110 Percent] are inspirational, thought provoking, a good dose of smelling salts in the conformity of America's lackadaisical attitude of today regarding conducting oneself in day to day activities.
There are many excellent reminders throughout his book borrowed from other writers/poets. I especially enjoy his breakdown of G.R.E.A.T.

I have employed many of his points that I have learned over the years in business-and they WORK!

Book Description

For much of Hollywoods history, short stories have been a major source of ideas for successful and significant films. Today, however, not as many short stories are being used as muses for major motion pictures. The reason is simple: the vast majority of magazines that published popular short storiesThe Saturday Evening Post, Look, Mademoiselleare gone. The outlets for commercial short fiction have evaporated and with them a wealth of inspiring movie material. This book picks up where those magazines left off: these terrific, thought-provoking short stories have been selected from more than 600 entries by an editorial board of authors, screenwriters, directors, and producers. These very same stories may be at a theater near you in the near future.

4 out of 5 stars About short stories that become movies.......2007-07-13

_The Hustler, It Happened One Night, High Noon, Minority Report_ and _All About Eve._ Quite an impressive list, but what do these movies all have in common? Give up? They all started as a short story.

Next Stop Hollywood is the brainchild of Steve Cohen and Jonathan Davis. Each year they partner with St. Martin's Press to publish original short stories that are judged by a panel of Hollywood insiders via an international contest, with winning entries compiled into the anthology. Their criteria? Finding stories that would make a great movie or TV project. More than 600 entries were submitted and narrowed down to a mere 15.

Using the same judging criteria, I chose three stories from Next Stop Hollywood to highlight.

Perry Glasser's "An Age of Marvels and Wonders," tells the story of a lonely old man slowly going blind and the young woman who comes into his life. Raylene is a walking hard luck story--with two kids, no money and an abusive ex-husband. Is it any wonder she's skeptical of an offer of help? Bob may slowly be going blind, but he sees far more than mere eyesight allows.

"Gone to Mum's" by Barry Simiana is a richly detailed and poignant story of missed chances, stolen moments, heartbreak and redemption. Simiana's narrator takes readers along on his journey of self-discovery amid the rugged backdrop of Australia. The author paints emotion on his canvas, stunning the reader with the simplicity and honesty of his prose.

"The Good Kid" by Brian Richmond, is a clever tale of deception. Marty is a bank robber on the run with nowhere to go. The kid is more than willing to help. But is he helping himself or Marty? O. Henry would have approved.

With Hollywood scrambling for fresh ideas, it's nice to know that the art of the short story is not completely forgotten.

Armchair Interviews says: Kudos to Cohen and Davis for their part in reviving an endangered genre.

5 out of 5 stars Digging Dirk!.......2007-06-23

I thoroughly enjoyed these short stories, especially "Dirk Snigby's Guide to the Afterlife". Dirk and the devil would be a hit on the silver screen!

5 out of 5 stars Glasser is a master at his craft.......2007-06-17

Perry Glasser is a wonderful writer and an inspiration in my own writing. His forthright yet crafty style will leave you complete. You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Perry Glasser -- rising star in the literary firmament.......2007-06-12

So far, I've read only the novella-length "An Age of Marvels and Wonders" and "Mexico," both by Perry Glasser. These two stories alone would justify the purchase of the anthology.

Perry has a narrative style and mastery of dialogue as smooth as the best of 'em. His characters come right off the page and into the reader's mind within a matter of paragraphs, and words (as challenge rather than as facilitator to the sheer enjoyment of the story) disappear within seconds. Higher praise I couldn't pay to any writer worth his nom or his plume.

If Perry's stories are any indication of the general tenor of the book, I very much look forward to reading the rest of it.

    Book Description

The proliferation of images of law, legal processes, and officials on television and in film is a phenomenon of enormous significance. Mass-mediated images are as powerful, pervasive, and important as are other early twenty-first-century social forces—e.g. globalization, neo-colonialism, and human rights—in shaping and transforming legal life. Yet scholars have only recently begun to examine how law works in this new arena and to explore the consequences of the representation of law in the moving image. Law on the Screen advances our understanding of the connection between law and film by analyzing them as narrative forms, examining film for its jurisprudential content—that is, its ways of critiquing the present legal world and imagining an alternative one—and expanding studies of the representation of law in film to include questions of reception.

5 out of 5 stars I could not put it down, it was history.......1999-08-04

I found this book in a used book store and the cover caught my attention. I purchased the book and put it back to read at a later date. I recently took a trip and thought that it would be a good time to start the book...I could not put it down once I started. It was if history had come to life. The author shows great knowledge of this time period and the way of life. This book should be made into a movie...I cant wait.

5 out of 5 stars This epic adventure is one of the best books I have read..........1999-02-13

In the style of Dr. Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia, and Gone With the Wind, it is destined to become a heralded classic. It is a historical fiction novel set in the middle 19th century in Mexico and Texas.

The story centers around two brothers separated in early childhood, each thinking the other is surely dead.

The youngest brother Aaron is adopted by renegade warriors in Mexico, and later annointed their leader through an ancient mystical tradition. James, the tough and vengeful brother grows to be a Texas lawman who has vowed to find the killers of his family and bring them to his own personal definition of justice.

Years pass and eventually the brothers meet again not knowing who the other really is.

The book will teach you to see beyond appearances and advises that prejudice, in any form, is destructive.

After all, are we who we see in the mirror, or are we the culmination of our life experiences and actions?

I highly recommend this book and would love to see it made into a movie.

                    Book Description

Wall Street is a funny business. All you have is your reputation. Taint it and someone else will fill your shoes. Longevity comes from maintaining that reputation.

Ask Jack Grubman, the All-Star telecom analyst from Salomon Smith Barney; uber-banker Frank Quattrone at CS First Boston; Morgan Stanley's Mary "Queen of the Net" Meeker; or Merrill Lynch's Henry Blodget.

Well, they probably won't tell you anything. But have I got some great stories for you.

Successful hedge fund manager Andy Kessler looks back on his years as an analyst on Wall Street and offers this cautionary tale of the intoxicating forces loose in the world of finance that overwhelmed sober analysis.

5 out of 5 stars Great, Easy Read!.......2007-04-30

I loved this book. All investors and traders should read it and learn from it. But above all it is such an easy read. It tells the interesting story of Kesslers life in the stock analyst world and confirms what I always thought. They are not as smart as people think.

4 out of 5 stars Tale from an Analyst who is lucky enough to make it to become a VC.......2007-03-19

Andy Kessler wrote this book from a first-person narrative, and as a result, made the book very easy to read. I read it after reading Dan Reingold's" Confessions of a Wall Street Analyst" then Charles Gasparino's "Blood on the Street". Reingold clearly has "skin on the game" and his tendency to focus on the technical aspects of an analyst's job shows, while Gasparino gave a far better high-level perspective than Reingold. Andy, however, appeared to be able to stay independent of the bankers while at the same time being able to benefit from stepping away to becoming a successful VC. As such, while he is able to look at the implosion happening at Wall Street with great behind-the-scenes understanding of what's going on, and at the same time having intimate knowledge of some of the analysts with the biggest name, because he got out early and found something better, the tales appear to be more aloof than either of the other two books. Nevertheless, it is still an interesting read.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and educational.......2007-02-14

This is one fo the MBA's books that can actually shed some light on Wall Street. Think of it as counter-balancing the "shows" which the I-Bankers put on the US campuses.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting look at the Wall Street tech world.......2006-08-08

This is an interesting story of a man who got caught up in the world of technology on Wall Street but managed not to get swept away by it. Kessler's story is fascinating-he was an electrical engineer who was hired on by a large Wall Street firm as an analyst when he didn't even know what an analyst was! He got into it mostly for the money, it seems, but did well as an analyst despite making calls that went against the consensus. In his early days (the mid 80's), and later at Morgan Stanley, he met some interesting figures who would play a large part in the tech bubble and blowup of the 90's. As an analyst he refused to compromise himself, and eventually quit Wall Street and started a hedge fund in California. Because of this he was able to avoid the bursting of the tech bubble and escape with his reputation intact (unlike many of his contemporaries). He also had great foresight in his hedge fund, and didn't suffer nearly as much as most people on Wall Street who were heavily invested in tech.

Kessler's story is interesting and many of his anecdotes are entertaining. Where this book falls short, I think, is that it is less a cohesive memoir and more a string of anecdotes and exploits. Much of the book almost gives the impression that one is sitting at a bar listening to Kessler tell stories. That's all well and good, but more detail and a better plot flow would have made this book much better. There is a good deal of name dropping, which is to be expected I suppose, but I didn't find it excessive. Overall this is a decent light read-nothing groundbreaking or memorable here, but worth a casual look.

                    5 out of 5 stars Amusing, valuable.......2006-08-06

A really funny, close-in look at Wall Street in the dot-com era, told from the perspective of a man who was snatched away from a techie job. A Must Read book when you consider that a lot of the same market hype is back again. Never forget.
