Another Extraordinary & Powerful Christian Biography--Wow!!.......2007-10-16
A wonderful, encouraging and profoundly thought-provoking look at life as a woman in a Muslim culture who converts to Jesus Christ. I couldn't put this one down. Read it in one day! Awesome and truly miraculous!
Journey to Intimacy with God in Muslim South Asia.......2007-07-05
Bilquis Sheikh describes her journey, beginning with her initial interest in spirituality. She tells of her search for the truth, studying her Koran and the Bible she had requested, and struggling to know which book was God's. She humbled herself to visit a missionary to ask questions. She knew how to pray; prayer had been a ritual performed five times a day. However, she was startled by the new thought of praying to God as a father. In which of the two holy books was God a father? She decided to accept the Bible. She studied it, and began to spend time with the missionaries. She listened to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and became convicted about so many things: baptism, her temper, her responses to other people. Christ gave her the strength to defy her family when they insisted she have nothing to do with Christians, as well as the courage to live calmly when her life was threatened. It was such a hard decision, even after she knew in her heart that she believed, and had become a Christian. Her family was close, and she enjoyed so many tender relationships cut off by her choice to follow Jesus. Her family, who had shared such love with her, even tried to kill her for rejecting Islam.
In this book, she chronicles this process. It is precious to see the Lord at work in hard places, like South Asia. We see that He is not limited, only we are. She also gives us insights into her own culture, and values of family and community which are remote from the individualism of the West. It is enlightening to glimpse into a Muslim family, and how she continued to live among her relatives after her conversion. Most of all, it is encouraging to read of another sister's journey to live before God in communion with Him as He has called us all to do. It brings reflection on our own lives, and the depth and closeness of our own relationship with our heavenly Father.
At the end of the book, there is an epilogue of Bilquis' life after the conclusion of the book. Then another perspective is added by Synnove Mitchell, the missionary to whom Bilquis first spoke about the Lord.
Written in an easy manner, this book can be read in an afternoon. Bilquis was open and honest about matters of the heart, and I did not find her to by dry at all. Who should read it? Those interested in this kind of conversion and culture, those wanting to know how God can be a Father, and Christians who want to understand this sister and those like her, and Christians who want to deepen their own relationship with our heavenly Father.
A Reminder of the Basic Truths.......2007-07-04
I'm trying to find the words, but the only thing that comes close is refreshing. At the time I read this, I was in a very dry place, but her tale planted a seed to allow God to raise me out of it.
It reminded me of the basic truths and just how complicated we make religion. The truth is God wants our obedience and through it all, he loves us unconditionally.
Great story and truly inspiring!
I Dared to Call Him Father.......2007-05-13
Powerful testimony of a Muslim background believer in Pakistan. Sent chills down my spine the first time I read it. It is a great way to get some insight into Islam and the way God can work. She is now with the Lord.
Wonderful Testimony of a Muslim Woman Turning to Christianity.......2007-03-19
I first heard of this woman when she was on the 700 Club with Pat Robertson way back in the early 1980's. She was interviewed and told how she came to know Jesus, when God called her to come to Him. She had been the wife of a very important head of state, and she was well known and respected. She kept this part of her life a secret for a very long time as if she was found out they would have killed her. She tells about how God would take her out of body over to america or some other continent to pray for someone that was sick, and the return her later to her body. She was sold out to the Lord, and fell in love with Jesus, as we all must do, and He began to use her to win other souls, and to heal the sick. It is a touching testimony of God's Love for all, and how He longs for all to come to Him. God is Love.
Read this book, and you will be touched by the love of the Father.

A thoughtful afterword complements this exquisite work.......2003-06-19
Echoes Of Memory is a collection of selected Italian poetry by the celebrated contemporary writer Lucio Mariani. Each poem is presented both in the original Italian and a facing English translation; the emotion and longing ring through the verses regardless of their language. A thoughtful afterword complements this exquisite work. Alphabets of Surrender: They say it's always the same poem that gets written/The way highland waters spray selfsame streams/The way a doe treks el mismo camino in the snow/If not for the imperceptible sidesteps of suspicion/If not for the grave alarm that sounds new alphabets of surrender/And prompts each of us to cry the poem that is ours alone.

Book Description
Eighteen-year-old Flora is recovering from “nervous exhaustion” in the sanatorium at her boarding school. She is supposed to rest. But the rest brings back her childhood memories of living in Borneo, where she encountered people and events shaped by the tragedies of the Second World War, when the island was occupied by Japanese soldiers and their concentration camps.
Award-winning author Adèle Geras weaves the captivating story of a young woman who, by coming to terms with her memories of the past, is able to move on to a new phase of her life.

Full of nuance, insight, and complexity.......2005-04-19
Memories, stories, and even whole novels are constructed of many layers, or pieces. There are the parts that are fiction, the parts that are based on fact, and the parts that are true, even if they never actually happened. All these parts fit together to present a bigger picture. In her novel, OTHER ECHOES, author Adèle Geras compares all the different parts of her story to pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Individually they are the setting of Borneo, a picnic on the beach, a cruel game of "Cowboys and Indians" beneath the tropical sun, a strange doll and an even stranger man. Together they reveal a larger picture about the British colonial experience following World War II.
OTHER ECHOES is told from the point-of-view of 17-year-old Flora, convalescing in the sanatorium of her English boarding school. Flora recalls her childhood in Borneo, where she and her parents moved after WWII. There she gets caught up in the limited social sphere of the other British colonial children. Tormented by their bullying, she sets out to prove her bravery by doing the one thing they fear. She visits the abandoned house on the hill.
Further pieces of the puzzle reveal the reason for the house's abandonment and the terrible experiences of many of the island's other British colonials when they were imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp during WWII. These are not Flora's experiences, but she is the same age as many of the children on the island who were born in the camp, and the community is haunted by this shared and secret past.
OTHER ECHOES is about a long vanished time, and yet it doesn't fall completely into the category of historical fiction. Most of the action dwells within the experiences of people who are still living. The world has changed enough in fifty years to make many parts of Flora's world seem quaint or alien. Some examples include the pervasiveness of hats and dresses, or the realization that sunscreen was not widely available until the late 1970s. Other parts jolt us into the uncomfortable realization that some things are not quite as safe in the past as we might like them to be. A passage in which Flora speaks of the two household servants who live with her family in Borneo is particularly uncomfortable:
"We called them Amah and Cook. I was nearly ten, and I called two adults older even than my parents by the name that went with the work they did. I am ashamed now. I want to call them, wherever they are, and shout out: 'I'm sorry. I meant no disrespect.' It is only now that I realize that not calling people by their proper names is the beginning, and by the end one group of people can say of another: you are not like us, you are inferior to us, you are not human beings at all."
Adèle Geras does not make a direct correlation between the ways in which the British colonials treat their household "help," the bullying of the children, or the horrors of the internment camp. And yet all the pieces of the puzzle are present in OTHER ECHOES waiting to be assembled both by Flora and the reader. Like many of Adèle Geras's previous books, OTHER ECHOES has nuance, insight and complexity. I am grateful that this book (originally published in 1982) is back in print so I could have a chance to read it.

A Glimpse of Olden Times.......2006-05-24
As someone who had the thought pop spontaneously into my mind while watching the graphic and brutal medieval warfare of Mel Gibson's movie Braveheart, "Oh no, not again!" I was keenly interested in reading this book. Dr. Lane regressed a number of Renaissance and Medieval Faire hobbyists and found that their current interests correspond to past-life experiences. There is a quality of reality in the descriptions these people make of their recalled centuries-old environments. Everything is there: the dirt and squalor; the clothing and fabric; the relationships between classes; the effects of poor hygiene and little or no medicine. These descriptions really bring one into the past. What I appreciate most about Dr. Lane's writing is her approach of healing the past, so that one may step freely into the future. Five stars.
Very good primer on medieval lives........2005-07-20
Barbara Hall studied a group of Medieval reenactors helping them to explore past lives that may be influencing their current hobby. Many of the past lives are fascinating - some predictably are short and/or boring. Overall this is a very good book that helps us understand what drives historical reenactors and gives us a birds eye view of the hardships of living in the Middle Ages.
An Interesting read.......2004-02-07
I've long thought that my medieval tendancies have related to past lives. This book chronicles a study group of medieval reenactors, SCAdians, and Farie folk who are regressed to past lives which occured during the middle ages and then the data is compared with historical fact.
There were a couple of people's stories that I really enjoyed, especially that of Helen. I found these peeks to be entertaining and an interesting glimpse into the lives of ordinary people during the middle ages. Though in the end the author shares many interesting statistics from the study I didn't find there to be any overall conclusion.
Impressive Study.......2002-11-30
Barbara Lane is a hypnotherapist, who after studying Civil War reenactors in her book Echoes from the Battlefield: First-Person Accounts of Civil War Past Lives, decided to do the same with Medievalists. She interviewed thirteen subjects involved in either the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), Renaissance Fairs and various living history organizations about their lives, interests and beliefs so that we know a bit about each person then she regressed them. Some had more than one session with her. Following their regressions, she had experts in Medieval studies look over the material gleaned during the regressions to historically verify the plausibility of the details revealed. The stories are so interesting I couldn't put the book down. At the end, Lane did a statistical comparison between the Medievalists and the Civil War reenactors (Echoes from the Battlefield, which I haven't read yet but plan to) making for a more scientific study of reincarnation. Highly recommended!
Must-Have for any who are interested in Past Lives.......2000-08-22
The only reason I gave this great book 4 stars is because its plot takes place in the Medieval Era. For those who do not feel they lived during that time...this book would not be as interesting or intriguing. However if you feel a strong resonance, whether its a positive or negative, to this time Era then buy this book and you will be taken back to that time through the stories of those who actually did live. You will hear how their horrible death, how they found love, how they lost love. Wonderful book!

The Thrilling Experiences Of A Great Leader Of The Salvation Army.
Book Description
This study examines tales from The Metamorphoses by the Roman poet Ovid (43 BC-18 AD) and from The Lais by the French poet Marie de France (fl. mid-to late twelfth century) to explore a paradox: how can a vibrant, complex, and timeless vision be conveyed in convention-informed and time-bound language? Marie plays against Ovid's tales to probe the dilemma, thereby echoing Ovid who does the same to the canonical literary monuments of his day. Both poets suggest that poetry can avoid the flattening effect of monumental canonizing not only by the creative use of literary echoes, but also by shifting perspectives on the conventional, which in turn, can encourage readers to see reflections of many stories in any given tale. Ovid and Marie suggest and encourage in this manner by presenting literary love's topoi and traditional lovers from a variety of metaliterary perspectives, thereby eliciting active readerly memory as well as providing the opportunity to see the conventional afresh, activity that allows even canonical texts to become living memorials.
Book Description
This book is a real Wild West story, told in "their way" by the people who lived in the Patagonia-Sonoita region of southeastern Arizona. Life here was hard, and the stories of how people lived and followed their instincts to survive may touch your heart, make you laugh or cry, or maybe both. Their bravery, hardships and desire for a new future developed southern Arizona. There are stories of Indians, priests, miners, ranchers, good men and bad, life and death, and much more. The author used information from various reputable publications for background but concentrated primarily on stories told by people who lived them or whose ancestors did. She tape-recorded the recollections of hundreds of local residents and also included information from newspapers, family records, diaries, memoirs, and even cemeteries. From the many people interviewed comes a clear picture of a country hard won, much loved, well remembered and treasured.
Book Description
In this companion volume to the successful Images of Enchantment: Visual and Performing Arts of the Middle East (AUC Press, 1998), historian and ethnomusicologist Sherifa Zuhur has once again commissioned and edited authoritative essays from noteworthy scholars from around the globe that explore the visual and performing arts in the Middle East.
What differentiates this volume from its predecessor is its investigation of theater, from the early modern period to the contemporary. Topics include race and national identity in Egyptian theater, early writing in the Arab theater in North America, Persian-language theater from its origins through the twentieth century, Palestinian nationalist theater, and a survey of the work of noted Egyptian playwright Yusuf Idris. Other aspects of the arts are not neglected, of course, as further avenues of dance, music, and the visual arts are explored.
Marked by interesting and fresh perspectives, Colors of Enchantment is another vital contribution to scholarship on the arts of the Middle East.

Turn off the TV and have some fun!.......2002-02-23
As a mother of two young boys, age 6 and 8, I can tell you that kids would much rather plop down and watch cartoons rather than make their own fun. Ms. Ellison's book has changed all that in my family. Now the kids flip through the book with me to find an activity they'd like to do, and don't even complain that they're missing their favorite TV shows! My oldest son has even started a club for the kids in our neighborhood based on an activity in the book. Thank you, Ms. Ellison, for helping my family turn off the TV and turn on their brains!
great!.......2000-04-07
I babysit for 2 little kids, and this is like a Godsend! All the activities in this book are do-able, and actually really fun. Every single one is fun and you can do all of them with your kids! It's terrific! Plus it gets them AWAY from the TV.

Branding Your Way to the Top of Your Field.......2006-10-23
This book establishes a strong case for branding very early. It then goes on to show you several techniques for creating your brand. Some of these include isolating patterns from your previous successes, writing books, speaking, creating marketable products to reinforce the brand etc.
The pay off of successful branding is that it creates an attraction that draws business your way, helps with client retention in the face of competition, and provides you with a guidance system for your practice.
Alan tells it like it is.......2005-03-17
Alan Weiss tells it like it is. If you want to learn from one of the best...read EVERYTHING Alan Weiss writes! Alan's insights and experience are second to none. I personally own just about every book Alan Weiss has written. He is not only a consultant's consultant, but he is also a gifted writer as well.

Branding a Unique Image.......2004-02-20
This terrific book covers ground I haven't seen elsewhere in the consulting field, including: umbrella brands, brand equity, establishing your name as the brand, tying-in products, using the media, and a great deal more. There is one reviewer who has posted the identical, negative review in all of Dr. Weiss's books: they are "repeats" of his classic "Million Dollar Consulting." There is no way this lengthy explanation of branding receives more than cursory mention in "Million Dollar Consulting," as good as that book may be. I doubt the negative review is based on actual reading of the book. For consultants who are rushing from "fire to fire," this is a great resource to slow us down and tackle the longer-term marketing which will result in business pursuing us rather than the other way around. There is nothing revolutionary here, just solid, pragmatic advice to use tomorrow.
Another KILLER Book - How to market and differtiate YOU !.......2002-06-13
Not just for the individual but also for the person in firm. I have applied Alan's ideas in selling professional services and differentiating my "products" from in-house work and competitors. The book is packed full of ideas. Implement two and it may take awhile to see the results - but it comes. As the other editorials write - it's not about cold calling - it's about the client(s) coming to you. Sound impossible. Read the book, it will be the best investment you ever make!! And I do mean investment - it'd take you take years to think of some of these ideas - if ever.
Another million dollars worth of advice.......2002-02-25
More fantastic consulting practice advice from Alan Weiss.
Eight months into building my leadership influence consulting practice, Mr Weiss has given me the gift of branding. He has shown me how to build the "gravity" to draw prospects to me, how to get more specific about the value I offer to clients, and what actions I need to take now to build the brand that will build my business.
I have seen some of these elements before, but this book wraps it all up in a neat template for action, and it has got me moving. I keep this book on my desk, not my shelf.
