Shallow, shallow, shallow.......2007-03-13
I was attracted by the word 'editor' and what that role would have entailed at such a successful magazine. Instead it was just a bunch of memoirs that went through her sex life, her eating obsessions and her deathly grip on her husband. Never again.
"COSMO GIRL" SPRINGS ETERNAL.......2005-05-05
Helen Gurley Brown is not especially "wild again" as the title of her latest book promises. In fact, considering the recent rash of blush-inducing tell-alls, she comes across as rather tame - opinionated but tame.
However, opinions and advice have been the now 78-year-old Ms. Brown's stock in well paid trade for over three decades. As Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan, considered the Holy Grail by millions of women, she brought sex out from under the covers, altered views of the workplace, proffered beauty hints, and dispensed dictums on whatever crossed her mind.
This eternally slender little girl from Little Rock who held 17 secretarial jobs before rising to the top of the publishing heap also penned "Sex and the Single Girl" (1962), which all but defined a decade.
I'm Wild Again defines little and rehashes much, ie "...fashion is to be taken seriously, even if it is ludicrous. Why? Because it's fun! Draping or shoeing yourself in different designs and colors every so often makes you feel frisky and new."
On the cusp of the millennium, one wonders how many women would toss away hard earned cash on something "ludicrous" in order to feel "frisky." (Which by the way appears to be Ms. Brown's most sought after condition).
Frivolity is fine, when it is recognized as such. But one has the uneasy feeling that Ms. Brown wishes to be taken seriously, even when her vocabulary includes "kissypoo" and her description of a beloved is "the man you're all squidgy about."
Never afflicted by timidity, the author offers opinions on subjects with which she has had no experience, such as being a working mother. She writes, "...to do the stuff you have to do to grow them (children) spiffy and happy, you may need to spend more time with them than affordable if you are meeting, conferencing, speaking, strategizing, junketing...those hours tote up while the kids are back-burning...."
Helpful?
Numerous studies show that sexual harassment takes its toll physically, emotionally and psychologically. Nonetheless, Ms. Brown opines, "I think offices are places where there not only is but should be sexual tension. Men and women are there together for hours and hours and knowing he's a man, you're a woman (or vice versa) is part of the fun."
She cites a former boss at Music Corporation of America who asked her to come in on Sundays, then chased her around "his beautiful, quiet office with all those fabulous antiques...."
"Of the millions of naughty suggestions made by millions of male employers to their "defenseless" female employees yearly," she continues, "I'd say half cheered the girls up, half brought the girls down but probably nothing bad has come out of most of them."
Balderdash.
The indomitable Ms. Brown also shows no hesitation in taking on the Lord's Prayer, which she describes as "one of my nightly go-to-sleep mantras" (others being left to the reader's imagination). Her revisions begin with "forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors," "I have trouble because I don't think I have any debts....I've paid off everything. The Presbyterian Church's version - "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us" - is murky to me.....what's a trespass? Whatever trespassing is, I don't think I'm doing it." She suggests "faults" as an appropriate substitute, while her definition of being led into temptation centers on petit fours.
Theologians are best equipped to comment on her rewrites, but perhaps that isn't necessary as she adds, "I'm not really praying to anybody anyway, just using this nice prayer and its soothing, beautiful writing to shut off the day."
While Ms. Brown is to be admired for candor in discussing her bout with breast cancer and her cosmetic surgery, perhaps rather than I'm Wild Again an apt title for this memoir would be "The Way We Were." The author's accomplishments are many, her credentials enviable, yet her memoir comes off as more old hat than new age.

DELIGHTFUL!.......2001-06-05
I have always admired HGB, so I had to get this book, and I was not disappointed. This book will make you laugh out loud. Not only is the book funny, but its full of wit and wisdom. HGB has truly had an amazing life. I hope that she continues to share her life with us through her books.
Totally "That COSMO Girl".......2001-01-24
Helen Gurley Brown tells it like it was, and her life has been more interesting than any fictional character's. She really spills the beans about the way she was; she clearly is a nice woman who had her own code of morality. That niceness keeps shining through the details, regardless of how, yes... wild those details sound. I'M WILD AGAIN is written in the same breezy style she made famous while putting the ailing COSMOPOLITAN magazine back on to the top of the heap, re-defining the magazine publishing industry in the process. She's had a hell of a ride as she moved from struggling secretary, counting every penny, to a living legend--still counting every penny! In WILD AGAIN, HGB lets her fans tag along for part of that ride.
The Longtime Legend Still Hast "It"!.......2000-06-09
People react in strong ways to Helen Gurley Brown and her "Cosmo Girl" outlook: with rage at her success despite her often politically incorrect views OR with a sigh of relief at her wonderfully whimsical, life's-a-party attitude.Obviously, I find myself in the latter camp.
In her latest candid memoir, HGB gets perhaps more personal that ever with revelations about tough times she's gone through (breast cancer, leaving Cosmo, assorted indignities of aging) with her usual unsinkable style, but perhaps revealing more depth and vulnerability than in her prior books, which tended to concentrate heavily on "land that job, land that man."
I think this is Helen at her best- the wisdom that comes from living a remarkable life (that should give hope to any late bloomer), the confidence of a woman who's succeeded too well to worry about appearing flawless, and of course, the ever-present insecurities that made her every Cosmo reader's friend on lonely nights because she'd been there, survived and eventually thrived.
Book Description
Part feminist, part superhero, Chyna has blazed a trail where no woman had gone before. She has gained the respect of the men inside the World Wrestling Federation, and the world at large. She was the first woman to wear the Intercontinental Championship belt, yet these were not her most significant battles.
She has battled her entire life: against a controlling mother; against a scheming father; and against a world with a predetermined view of what beauty and success should be. She has battled and won her entire life.
If they only knew offers a rare glimpse behind the scenes of the World Wrestling Federation, and a rarer glimpse of what it takes just to get there -- the hurdles that must be overcome... and the broken hearts and broken body parts that are suffered along the way.
Chyna -- a.k.a. Joanie Laurer -- lets us in what it's like to live your dream and overcome your nightmares. Complete with insights from other WWF Superstars, this is a must read for any fan of the WWF and for anyone who wants to see how a real-life hero overcame adversity.

Uhhh..........2006-07-18
Say, did you know Chyna hates every single person shes ever met? Or that she can't express a rational thought? Or that shes compleatly out of her mind? You would if you had wasted the time reading this pile of garbage.
Better than the usual WWE book.......2006-01-19
I have read two copies of this book to pieces and have loved to go back to certain chapters to re-read them, just for the laughs. My favorite chapter is her first workout with Triple H, in which she confides to the reader she didn't know whether this was "going to be a workout or a WORKOUT (wink, wink)". Also, she lets others give direct quotes in her book, including Triple H. Of those, again I recommend the workout story, in which Triple H admits that he couldn't press 315 lbs, and when he tried, he "blew one of my n*ts across the room". Yet, Chyna did her reps and went on to leg presses. ...sigh...good times...
The ninth wonder of the world indeed.......2004-05-13
I can say that Chyna is my favorite wrestler of all time, and I can also say that her autobiography was amazing,Most say it is poorly written,But I would say other wise...I found the book to be quite interesting and brought you closer to the WWE diva.It showed you how hard she had it growing up with her mother and father...and How she made her way into the WWF now WWE.She brings you in closer on her careers before wreslting and what it took to become the most celebrated diva in WWE history of her time. She proved she was just as good as the men if not better then most of them. She made you see who the real chyna is...The side we dont see,the side that is Joanie Laurer!!
Not bad, but not a great book........2004-05-03
The Canadian price for this book is 39.50, and anyone who would pay that much for this book is a fool. I picked this up for 8.99 in the bargain bin at a grocery store, and that's about all this book should cost. I'm what you would call an on-again/off-again wrestling fan, and tune in now and then to watch it. Some of the characters are intersting. I don't follow it religiously like some people do. This book was an intersting read, but it's kind of like reading the National Enquirer or any of the other tabloid newspapers: it's a fast read and kind of trashy. I wanted to learn much more about the backstage goings on and the behind-the-scenes stuff about the world of pro wrestling, not endless pages about her grudges against her mother and her dysfunctional upbringing, which wasn't that horrible in comparision to what other's have been through. Yeah, her mother yelled at her alot and was the typical dramatic mother. Big deal. Everyone has a mother like that. I also wanted to hear more about some of the other jobs she did before wrestling. I found the book jumped around alot, and just when she'd write about something intersting she'd cut it short... she'd start with an idea and then suddenly the topic would be changed and she'd go off on something else. The book is also not very well-written, with gramatical and spelling errors, and i suspect that a ghost writer had quite a hand in the writing of this book. There is quite a bit of swearing in the book, and this book is not suitable for younger readers, as there seems to be a more adult tone to the book. The fact that this book was written double-spaced probably explains the over 300 pages. The photographs are nice though. My advice is borrow this from the library or get it in some bargain bin. Don't pay full price for this book. I've heard there are many other books about wrestlers that are much better than this one and more intersting. This book i read more as a curiosity piece. Not bad, but not great either. For fans only or the curious.
Autobiography of Chyna.......2004-02-14
I'm not a fan of the WWF. I'm also not a fan of car wrecks either, but I do slow down and survey the damage (don't we all), and a car wreck would be apt metaphor for Chyna's (Joanie Laurer's) life. So many events conspired to push her down, you would expect her to live a mediocre life, but no, somehow she rises above it and becomes a wrestling superstar. That is what this book is about.
Although this book is poorly written, disjoined, double-spaced, and bordering on a literary version of attention deficit disorder, that just adds to picture. The majority of the book deals with Joanie's difficult childhood, and is saturated by old grudges. The final part of the book details her rise to fame and fortune.
This is definitely a unique autobiography aimed at wrestling fans, but I found it entertaining nonetheless. If you happen to find it in a resale shop, like I did, it might be worth a look.

okay reading..........2005-08-09
This guide provided you with all their layouts and tips and you are expecting of them. The inside information your expecting is exactly what your getting. But, there is still one problem, on the back cover it says "secret codes inside"... there are no codes inside this guide, false advertisement all the way. I specifically bought this book to get some codes to better my play. well there arent any codes at all. So dont buy the book if your looking for codes. Only buy the book if your wanting to get layouts of the courses your wanting to play...
Very nice to look at, but very little to improve your game.......2004-09-23
I love Hot Shots Golf 3 and its successor, Hot Shots Golf Fore. I'm pretty good at the game as I win a fair number of tournaments, but I can't seem to take it to the next level and get those -18 scores that you see people talking about on the net all the time (I still have yet to get a hole in one on either game, although I've been close many times). So I picked up the strategy guide for Fore to see if it would help.
I have to say that the book is well made with lots of color on high quality paper, but the only thing that helped me here was some of the tips on how to play certain holes, especially the ones that gave me trouble. Each of the game's courses (I believe there are 13 in this game) are layed out hole by hole and a startegy for playing each hole is given for both beginners and advanced players. But what I would have liked to see was a listing as to which characters are best suited for a particular course and what is the best equipment (clubs and balls) for the course. It wasn't a bad purchase, but I saw strategy guides on the net for HSG3 that were much more helpful.

pathetic waste of $.......2005-05-31
This piece of garbage was the worst ripoff I've ever come accross. I am convinced that all previous reviewers are somehow related to the author. There was not even 1 piece of valuable info in this pile of junk. The author simply points out the most basic concepts in real estate. The 1st 100 pages or so are dedicated to picking a good location, because real estate in good locations appreciates in value faster than other areas.... wow! what a concept! 100 pages to point this out? JUNK! Don't get ripped off by this poor excuse for a real estate "expert". There is no specific info in this book which could possibly be of help to anyone. Beware!!!
Great Book! I can't put it down!.......2004-04-28
My husband and I are building a vacation rental. This book has been great for us. If you are thinking of investing in a second home it gives you all the information on how to go about buying. It has the advantages & disadvantages & how you could meet trouble. We had already bought our property before the book. Now that I've read the book. It's got me excited to look for a 3rd home after our house is done being built. You might as well have fun in your vacation home & make $ at the same time. Read the book, you'll like it!
This is a great guide for a very big purchase!.......2004-02-18
Eldred guides you through all the questions you must ask and answer before you buy any home, but of course with special considerations on buying a second home. Midlifers who have that chunk of money from a house sale, inheritance, or investment can ensure that money will be well spent to set them up for later years. Eldred has both been there (bought real estate) and done that (his research) and you will benefit from his experience.
A Must!.......2003-08-28
I have read and re-read this book. I just bought a second home in the Arizona mountains with the idea of renting it out part-time and this book helped me to solidify some ideas and develop an action plan. I recommend it for anyone who has a second home or is thinking about it..
Thank you Dr. Eldred.......2002-08-29
Following this author's techniques and advice we bought a second(future retirement) home on a lake in Georgia. Just as he forecast, homes like ours have jumped $100,000 in the past 2 1/2 years. Thanks for giving us the kick we needed to make the buy we've considered for years.

The Second Homeowner's Handbook: A Complete Guide for Vacation, Retirement, and Investment by Jeff Haden.......2006-12-29
I find that the author has a genuine interest in his Reader's understanding the Real Estate area in general terms as well as provoking them to analyze whether they can afford to invest in property whether vacation, retirement or investment properties.
I felt that the goal of the author was to help Readers make better choices in Real Estate investments from a personal and business perspective. The Second Homeowners Handbook provided step by step guidelines and references on identifying property to invest, choosing the right location, analyzing the market, and goal setting.
While there are many Real Estate investment books on the market, you can not find a book that provide actual details on how to maximize property values by eliminating clutter or steps to improve basic appearance of the property to ultimately generate quick profits. This is a book that you can not resist and is a good buy for those interested in second homeownership.

Valuable information for any homeowner.......2006-10-25
This book outlines smart financial moves to make even if you are not planning on buying a second home. The tips covered are useful for buying or selling a first home also - items such as how to analyze property or loans, and how to increase the resale value of a home are important in any real estate transaction. For those who are interested in buying a second home, the purchase, financing, and maintenance of residence, rental, and rehab properties is covered in detail. There are clearly written guides which relate the procedures required to hold a second home for monthly income or increase long term wealth.
The writing is well organized and easy to understand, with excellent descriptions and testimonials from those who are already experienced in the business of real estate. An extensive glossary at the end is helpful for readers who are unfamiliar with real estate terms and phrases.

The author of The Second Homeowner's Handbook, Jeff Haden, writes from extensive, personal experience. He states, "Real estate is one of the most stable investments you will find." He is absolutely right and the handbook gives you the knowledge and tools you need to make wise and profitable investments in real estate. I highly recommend The Second Homeowner's Handbook to anyone considering purchasing a home - to live in or invest in!
A Good Guide for the Second Homeowner.......2006-10-17
Whatever your reason for purchasing a second home, this book is a great guide. The book covers every possible use of a second property: your own residence, renting for additional income and flipping for a profit. The benefits of owning a second home are discussed and tips for performing a self assessment and establishing your goals are included.
This book helps you understand the process of real estate transactions from start to finish. If you plan to buy additional properties in the future, the book has great information for determining what to look for in a property, locating properties and developing a good relationship with your real estate agent. You will learn a lot about analyzing and comparing properties to help you find the best second home for your needs.
Once you have selected a property, the book helps you learn the basics of mortgages. There are great tips to help you secure the best possible terms on your loan. Information on creative financing is also provided. After you have purchased the property, this book is still valuable. There is great information about managing and improving the property after you have made the purchase.
