Who becomes a legend most? For more than two years, a panel composed of such arbiters of culture as Leo Castelli, Rita Dove, Bruce Jenner, Joyce Carol Oates, Daniel Schorr, Gay Talese, Pierre Trudeau, and Eli Wallach pondered that question and came up with a list of the 200 most important icons of the 20th century. Their choices are compiled in this wonderfully designed book. Each icon merits a tall, vertically oriented, two-page spread. A full-page portrait is expertly reproduced on the right-hand side, and, given its length, a surprisingly informative biography takes up the facing page. Uncommon photos of the usual suspects are here--Marilyn Monroe, Martin Luther King Jr., James Joyce, Babe Ruth, Bette Davis, Jesse Owens, Marlon Brando, JFK, Anna Pavlova, even Michael Jordan. But some of the most pleasing inclusions are the surprises--the people who shaped the century but whose faces are less recognizable. This group includes philosophers Hannah Arendt and Carl Jung; South African doctor Christiann Barnard, who performed the first successful human heart transplant surgery; scientist Enrico Fermi, whose work led directly to the discovery of nuclear fission; Maria Montessori, who revolutionized early childhood education; legendary conductor Arturo Toscanini; and James Watson and Francis Crick, who discovered the shape of DNA. This is a well-timed book, for as the century draws to a close, one can hardly think of a better way to take stock of the dramatic events, advances, and--arguably--declines that have shaped the human experience over the past 100 years.

A Good Book, Despite Certain Omissions.......2001-11-19
This isn't really that bad a book. The text was well written for each individual mentioned and the photographs were quite good, my favorite was the one with Mikhail Gorbachev hand feeding a squirrel on a tree. Still, there are certain individuals this book left out who I thought should have made it. Below is a list of those who I feel should have been in this book.
Pope John Paul II
Nikita Khruschtev
J. Edgar Hoover
Ayatollah Khomeni
Wayne Gretzky
Vince Lombardi
Howard Stern
Jimi Hendrix
Thelonius Monk
The Red Baron, Manfred von Richthofen
Lenny Bruce
George S. Patton
Joe Montana
Gloria Steinman
Janis Joplin
Harrison Ford
Irving Berlin
Bill Clinton
Charles Manson
Howard Cosell
Barbara Cady is the best!.......1999-12-30
This book, I think is ine of the most influential books of the 20th century, and certainely one of the most entertaining! Mother Theresa, and Micheal Jordan were certainely, and are included in this book; but the thing that impresed me most is that I found Um Kolthum on the list. I thank Barrbara Cady for including her in, I greatly appreciate it. If you find a customer that disagrees with the content of this magneficent, beautiful book, don't agree with him. He is certainely a bad reader. People trust me with this! A great read!
A real collectors Item.......1999-10-06
Unlike a number of other books about the ranking of the "greatest" of the 20th century, this book does not rank anyone. This book lists the 200 men and women, in alphabetical order, who have made a difference during the last 100 years.
Cady blends detail with a personal touch in each biographical synopsis. The photos, in black and white, give the reader a face to put to the story. Photographer Jean-Jacques Naudet is a master of capturing the essence of the person on film.
While the price of the book is a bit hefty, your money is well spent in this collectable piece of work. For the past hundred years you have read stories about JFK, Ali, Mother Theresa, Michael Jordan now you can own a part of history.
I was most impressed by the author's ability to remain unbiased in the reporting. While I may not have include some of the people, I was no doubt impressed by the list. I am certain that this book will be real family or school crowd pleaser well into the next century.
Big Big Book.......1999-05-06
This is a massive book in terms of physical size. It has to weigh at least 5-10 pounds and could probably be used as a home protection device. Great gift idea. Giant!
An excellent, well-designed & -illustrated book.......1999-02-01
But, alas, too American in the perspective. The selection includes people who are only of importance in the U.S. area. I.e. baseball & football players and t.v. entertainers (Oprah!)And in choosing Oppenheimer and Fermi instead of the far more important Niels Bohr. Further, Karen Blixen is presented by her alias Isak Dinesen - quite embarassing. The photos, though, are phantastic and the layout creative. In spite of an American chauvenism in the selection, the book makes a brilliant statement heading for the millennium.

Definitely a view of the last century through people.......2004-05-21
Icons: 200 Men and Women Who Have Made a Difference by Barbara Cady (Black Dog & Leventhal Publishing) A dramatic, distinguished record, Icons is a powerful and provocative look at the giants of our time-the groundbreakers, thought-provokers, visionaries, tyrants, trendsetters, and style-makers who have left an indelible mark on our world. The culmination of ten years' research on the part of author Barbara Cady and photo editor jean-Jacques Naudet, it features two hundred of our century's most recognizable faces-individuals who have helped form our modern sensibilities, for better or worse: men like John F. Kennedy, Albert Einstein, Elvis Presley, Mao Zedong, and Pablo Picasso; women like Marilyn Monroe, Margaret Thatcher, Aretha Franklin, Amelia Earhart, and Eleanor Roosevelt.
A lavish album, Icons presents an extraordinarily wide selection of people chosen by a panel of more than sixty international leaders in the arts, sciences, politics, fashion, and technology. Barbara Cady's lively and probing biographies tell the fascinating stories behind these individuals' great accomplishments, exploring the views, personal backgrounds, and dramatic contributions each "icon" has made. Through Cady's treatment, the politician, philosopher, scientist, artist, athlete, and entertainer is presented in his or her unique greatness-or infamy.
The rare black-and-white photographs in Icons establish the book's unparalleled visual impact. They are by turns elegiac and haunting, celebratory and enchanting-all are arresting portraits of the century's most familiar faces caught in unfamiliar and revealing lights. Culled from archives around the world, the images in Icons represent the best of modern photography, with works by such masters as Henri Cartier-Bresson himself one of the icons), Helmut Newton, Cecil Beaton, and Robert Capa.
Powerful, intriguing, and informative, Icons is a visually stunning, historically sweeping work, destined to become a collector's item.
The two hundred individuals included in Icons of the Twentieth Century were chosen with the help of a multi-national Board of Advisors, respected leaders in the arts and sciences, in politics, publishing, education, fashion, entertainment and technology. Asked to base their deletions, nominations and rankings on their following definition of an icon: "Individuals whose names and faces have impacted us all and whose deeds-for good or ill-have literally shaped the course of modern history." When the ballots were tallied, about fifteen percent of the 200-name list-the nominations which garnered only a few votes each-fell at the thin end of the statistical bell curve. It was here that the combined efforts of the author, the publisher and the project's editors and researchers were called into service.
No grouping, of course, can ever be complete, nor can there be any objective criteria for hierarchical importance-not even for who is included and who is not. Questions will immediately arise: Why Nasser and not Khomeni? Why not Idi Amin, whose face came to symbolize the destruction of Africa in the post-colonial period, or Kwame Nkuma, whose independent Ghana initially offered a better hope for a continent in turmoil? Why not Konrad Adenauer, who out of the ruins of the Third Reich established the beginnings of post-World War democracy in Germany? And why Emperor Hirohito and not Tojo whose leadership of Japan may have had more to do with World War II in Asia than the imperial family? In the end, it would have been impossible to include every famous political leader of the century without eliminating key individuals in, say, music or literature.
Acknowledging that in this century government leaders-whether mass executioners or sun-kings-ipso facto dominated the world stage, it was decided they would not overrun Icons.
There were many others who made us think differently about our world-originals like Alfred Kinsey, Buckminster Fuller and Marshall McLuhan-who were not included. In some cases, it was because heir faces were simply not as recognizable as others, an important consideration because of the book's defining concept of eikon, or image. A similar point can be made for many of the century's innovators, individuals whose inventions-the television, the computer, the jet engine, the Pill, penicillin-are much more well known than they are. But Icons was about people not things.
Given that the major categories of human endeavor were to be represented, choice was difficult when there were too many candidates in one category, which was often the case. Why Nureyev and not also Nijinsky or Balanchine? Why Billie Holiday and not also Bessie Smith and Ella Fitzgerald? Marcel Proust and not also Thomas Mann and William Faulkner? Why Babe Ruth and not Joe DiMaggio? Why not dozens of other high profile sports stars and performers, all iconic in their way due to the development of mass media in our century? Behind each inclusion and exclusion lie endless arguments. But the selection made at the end of the day is at best a selection.
Customer Reviews:
Great book! .......2005-09-08
This is a great easy reading book for anyone interested in Chuck, or Archery, or hard work and inspiration.
I had no idea of the hard work it took to finalize the incredible super-slam. I thought the book brought out some great insider stuff into the world of archery politics etc.
I applaud Chuck for his courage and determination.
I applaud Ted Nugent for his in your face attitude and for standing up for Chuck with his words. Ted Rules!
If you want an easy read with a lot of neat hunting stuff and archery stuff to inspire you to make your own hunts better I suggest you pick this one up.
This book is very exciting!.......2005-09-07
I highly recommend "Life at Full Draw," because it tells a lot more about the life of Chuck from boyhood through his Super Slam! Reading these hunting adventures makes a bowhunter dream about some of these hunts. I felt that this book was much better than Super Slam, because I got to know who Chuck Adams is and how he thinks. I have tried contacting him through a magazine, but have not heard back from him. I'm not sure how to take that, did he not get my message, is he to busy to respond, or is he simply ignoring me? I highly recommend this book!
Could anyone be this good?.......2005-07-16
Chuck Adams. Any archer who doesn't know the name of the most prominent bowhunter today -- the one with the trademark smile and knit cap, the one often mentioned in the same breath as Howard Hill, Fred Bear and other archery luminaries -- isn't paying attention.
Adams has definitely earned his place in bowhunting history, and anyone who is intrigued by what it takes to have his amazing success wonders "Could anyone be this good?" This book, an authorized biography, seeks to answer that question.
One thing this book lacks is an index. Readers are always well-served by a good index so that people, places and events that the author found important enough to include can be easily referenced. A timeline would also be helpful in biographies. Those minor deficiencies aside, if you're wondering how this Superman with a stick and string has done it, this book will tell you.
One Man's Mission.......2005-06-01
As an avid bowhunter, I felt obligated to purchase and read this book. I first read of Mr. Adam's taking of all 29 North American big game animals years ago in the NRA's American Hunter magazine.
Since then, I've been slowly making my own run at the "super slam", but by recurve bow shot instinctivly. This is my weapon of choice.
Mr. Adams is occasionally embroiled in the traditional vs modern debate, and has no qualms about stating his opinion. He feels the sighted, compound bow is a superior weapon, and he feels that taking 60 yard shots is acceptable if the archer is skilled enough. I disagree, but I was able to set this aside as I read the book. I wanted to "get inside" the man, learn about his mortal strengths and weaknesses, hear more about his missed shots and bad shots (we all make them, whether we are longbow shooters, compound shooters, or SEAL snipers), learn more about his life outside bowhunting, etc.
Unfortunately, very little of this was revealed. I suspect Mr. Adams is a very private man, or perhaps aloof. After reading the book, I tried to contact him for some advice or little bits of wisdom on how I might continue my own super slam quest. While I never heard back from him, the three other bow hunters who have also achieved the super slam quickly contacted me and shared some pearls.
Life At Full Draw reads more like a catalogue of hunts. After a while, the stories are all pretty much the same. Those of us who have hunted for years and have had the opportunity to take, by bow and arrow, muskox, brown bears, bison, etc. need something deeper. Here is where the personal insights, the private thoughts, the ponderings and self doubts, etc. should be liberally sprinkled into the prose. It would have made for much better reading, and frankly would have greatly served bow hunting, which is now under rabid attack by anti-hunters.
I did come away with a genuine respect for Mr. Adam's focus, intensity, and drive. However, the book presents him as too one-dimensional. He must be more complex.
If one commissions, or is asked for, a biography, one is obligated to open up and share. We, the readers, can and should expect this.
Thomas M. Basch, MD
not too bad.......2004-12-04
Honestly, I expect more hunting tales and less personal information. I didn't read the final third of the book because it is all about personal thoughts, issues and stuff not about hunting. I know Chuck is a great hunter and that many people are jealous of that, but I wanted to be a better hunter at the end of this book and I am not sure if that happened. Maybe I should have read "Super Slam" to hear more hunting stories. If you want to know more about Chuck and his personal conflicts and beliefs, then this is a good book. If not, buy something else.
Book Description
Living in the shadow of a famous parent can have powerful effects, from professional opportunities to pressure so great it leads to suicide. Some children of stars are proud of their roots while others live in secrecy. This is a rare look into the private lives of the children (and, in a few cases, grandchildren) of these classic Hollywood icons, revealing the stresses and inspirations of living with great performers who may or may not have been great parents. Some movie stars protected their offspring, but others used them as publicity props or even made them into rivals. Despite their unusual upbringing, some of the children succeeded in the movies or elsewhere, but many never lived up to the public expectations. Many lost their parents, whether to the extremes of the celebrity lifestyle, to divorce, or to their careers. From the beautiful bedtime stories Harpo Marx and his wife told their four adopted children to explain where they'd come from, to the studded belt Bing Crosby used to punish his sons for not obeying the strict family rules, this work tells the best and worst of growing up in a celebrity home.
Families covered include those of W.C. Fields, the Marx Brothers, Eddie Cantor, Mario Lanza, Ruth Hussey, Jerry Lewis, Douglas Fairbanks and Boris Karloff. Research is drawn from interviews with celebrity offspring, who also provided never-before-published snapshots of Hollywood legends at home.
Customer Reviews:
A kid's view.......2007-05-28
As a kid who LOVES old Hollywood comedies, I was very interested to read what it was like to grow up as the kid of some of my favorite comedians. I have to admit, I initially thought that having a famous parent with loads of money to buy anything in the world would be cool, now after reading this book, my opinion has changed. Interesting stories and nice photos make this book a must have for anyone wanting to know what their favorite star was like in their private life, as a parent - instead of an icon.
Nothing New.......2005-09-20
This book offers nothing new. I paid $30.00 for a thin book hoping to see how these people felt about their parents and what they did with their lives. Vogel devotes chapters to other peoples books, such as Harpo Marx, Gary Crosby, and Leatrice Gilbert Fountain, books that I already read. Her chapter on Harpo Marx just quotes from his book on how the children were told about their adoption. Her chapter or Suzanne Lloyd was disapointing, she doesn't say who her parents were and why she was raised by her gradparents.
This book was a disapointment as it leaves you with too many unanswered questions on the lives of these people.
A Very Personal Look at Hollywood Upbringings.......2005-09-14
A compilation of excellent stories, telling the impact
positive or negative of being born a child to a Hollywood
Star. The stories are first hand which makes it so interesting.
Most of the chidren interviewed are middle-aged,the progeny
of the "Old Hollywood Star System".
Even the actors and actresses, you may only be familiar with from late night movies or TCM,it is well documented in the
form of first person.
Some are the early stars from Broadway Comedy. When they were
able to "make it" in Hollywood, they were not ashamed of their
early roots of poverty and hard work.
They tried to instill this in their chidren who were born
without a material want.If they cared about their families
and were spending their "off worktime" with them, the chidren
were happy.
Some like Cheryl,Lana Turner's daughter,yearned for her
mother.Chris Costello, daughter of Lou Costello, and Vicki (Abbott)Wheeler, daughter of Bud Abbott;fared well due to
the unconditional love of their parents.Even though,Chris's
Mom and Dad died early in her life. She has many good memories
to share.
Others, like the natural sons of Bing Crosby
and his alcoholic wife Dixie Lee,suffered enourmously.Of the
four brothers, two commited suicide, one died of Cancer and
only one is now alive.
Especially, poignant was the story of Romina Power.Born to
Tyrone Power and actrees Linda Christian, she was romanticly
named after the city where her parents met and married.
However,within 5 or 6 years,her parents divorced.Then when
she was only seven years, her father died while filming. He
left Romina,her sister Taryn,her un-born brother,of his
third wife.Romina hears the stories, sees the pictures of her
Dad,but cannot recall him, although her younger sister can.
The divorce, the dealing with parental death for a young child,
has blotted him from her memory.
There are many first hand stories from children and photoes
never seen.
Like most children everywhere-there were the good, loving
parents and there were the immature narcissistic type.
They were trained to be,actors or actress'but "missed the
boat" on parenting skills.
On the whole,I gave it a five because it is a book of good
times told in a refreshing manner, without the premise of
of parent bashing, that is so prevalent in many books.
Right from the mouths of the children of the stars.......2005-08-14
So many children of Hollywood stars have written books on their parents over the years but "Children of Hollywood" is a melting pot of some of the best A-list actors that Hollywood has ever produced and their kids and grandkids dish the dirt on how they were away from the camera...as caregivers.
Each chapter is an individual story so you can read the book from start to finish or middle to end and then back to the beginning. The photos are mostly candids from the albums of the kids telling the stories.
Author, Vogel has the ability to get the personal stories told whilst still giving the reader an overall view of the life and career of the celebrity in question. The chapter on Larry Fine of The Three Stooges is hilarious! Many comedians are covered throughout, from The Marx Bros., to Jack Benny and Jerry Lewis.
A worthwhile read! Very enjoyable with lots of insight into the private world of these classic actors of yesteryear.
A candid look at Hollywood's children..........2005-08-04
I bought this book after reading the author's other book on Gene Tierney and I was so impressed with her ability to get these children of Hollywood legends to tell their stories, many of them for the very first time in, "Children of Hollywood."
Even the photographs come directly from the albums of the children. Candid shots of the kids at home with their famous parents/grandparents. This is the first real look at Hollywood from the eyes of the children and it's an amazing read. For anyone who's a fan of classic Hollywood film, buy this book, the kids of these A-list actors have funny, insightful, tragic stories to tell.
A great read!

A Pioneering Look.......2003-07-01
Hicks ventures where few have had opportunity to go. This well-documented, in-depth look at Cowell, his philosophically anarchistic parents and the young composer's formative years paints the portrait of an inquisitive youth raised by struggling authors from the San Franciscan Bohemian Club of the early 20th century.
Henry's wife, Sydney Robertson Cowell (also a musicologist), supressed much information surrounding Cowell, going as far as to suppress Joscelyn Godwin's 1969 dissertation for its critical approach to the composer's music. Archives in New York City's Library became available to public eyes for the first time in 2002. Hicks takes full advantage of this fortuitous event and assembles an entertaining, informative, and new look at one of America's most prolific and eclectic composers.

Customer Reviews:
Make sure editions match up.......2007-05-12
Amazon has the 8th edition manual paired up with the 7th edition textbook. I had already purchased the text when I realized I was in dire need of the solutions manual and bought the one that supposedly complemented my book. As you can imagine, I was no better off than when I started.
I did find the 7th edition manual at a local bookstore and I compared the two editions. If you're looking for the solutions, the manual serves its purpose. If you're looking to understand the "Why?" or "How?" behind the answer, you'll need to ask your teacher or invest in a tutor instead.
Outstanding companion to the Corporate Finance textbook.......2007-02-16
The solution manual contains fully-explained answers to every problem in the "Corporate Finance" textbook. I'm not quite sure how a student could even use the textbook without having the Solutions Manual. In fact, it should be bundled with the textbook.
Book Description
Includes solutions to all Practice Problems and Challenge Problems from the text.
Customer Reviews:
Flawed but essential.......2005-07-16
What can you do? The text itself has no answers to the practice questions, many of which are not really straightforward. The solutions manual has a number of errors (I've found an average of at least 2 per chapter, and I'm sure I don't catch them all), but for the most part puts you on the right path.
The text is nearly useless without the solutions manual, so I guess you need this; read carefully and think deeply when an answer doesn't make sense -- it may be you, or it may be the manual.
I can't believe Brealey had much to do with this book -- it suffers from the sloppiness you'd expect from an underpaid grad student. Based on my experiences in grad school, I'd bet most of my net worth that Brealey had little to do with the actual writing of the "solutions" here.
To learn finance you gotta do the exercises!.......2003-10-15
Ignore the guys complaining about the odd wrong answer and ignore the guys complaining about Brealey & Meyers.
Let's face it: "Principles..." is THE book in educational finance; and most likely, if you're reading this review you haven't chosen the book on your own accord but rather it was chosen for you on your M.Sc. or the like. And now you're wondering about buying the solutions manual...
So, why do the exercises? Well, it's the only way to learn finance. The book is good, but having gone through it and the quiz questions, you might think "Was that all? I could pass an exam with one hand tied to my back." (I know I did...) So you need the exercises to get you down from that pedestal and get you to LEARN finance (!). The questions are good and varied and get you to think about the concepts, formulas etc. They are in general better and more advanced than the quiz Qs. And if you can't figure out all the questions on your own then a book with solutions is quite handy.
Only problem is that it's a bit expensive considering it's only a solutions manual. But a good buy nonetheless!
way slow delivery.......2003-03-08
USPS took 3 1/2 weeks to deliver. Pay for the extra shipping to get product in a timely manner.
Waste of time!.......2002-03-27
The solution's manual is just as full of MISTAKES as the book itself - one huge catastroph that should be forbidden for any serious student of Corporate Finance. Scandal!
Solutions manual - too many errors.......2001-07-05
I bought this book thinking that it would help me verify the answers, but in fact there are too many errors in the book. I have found a lot of problems out of sequence, and a lot of them not properly done. I have contacted the author to mention about the errors but haven't heard from him yet.
