Book Description

No family today is more dysfunctional than Joseph's. No one faces greated temptation than Potiphar's wife offered Joseph. No faith is challenged more severely than was Joseph's on death row. Yet Joseph stood firm, exemplifying what is possible when ordinary people maintain their connections with God. Like an epic novel filled with intrigue, tension, and torrential emotions, Joseph's triumphiant story touches us all. This third volume in Charles Swindoll's"Great Lives" series presents a fresh look at one of the most intriguing characters in the Old Testament and focuses on the virtue of forgiveness in the face of deceit and betrayal.

5 out of 5 stars Joseph by Chas. R. Swindoll.......2007-08-16

The preacher of my church preached one Sunday morning about Joseph, the fellow with the multi-colored coat fr. his father. Before getting into Joseph's life, the preacher told of how Jacob came into Rachel's family, and about Rachel's dad, Laban. Fascinating to me it was. I wanted to find a book to read about "Joseph, etc."--read what an author has penned. Charles R. Swindoll does an excellent job and in an excellent style of writing. I found the book to be a full-fledged account. Joseph's life was awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful lesson in forgiveness.......2007-01-11

This is yet another wonderful book in the series. Well worth the reading and study. Have ordered additional copies to give as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Joseph Great Lives Series: Volume 3.......2007-01-09

I really like the accuracy of the book. Charles Swindoll is one of my favorite pastors and authors. He didn't let me down with this book.

5 out of 5 stars "One of the two best on Joseph!".......2004-04-26

Although my favorite Joseph book is 'With Joseph in the University of Adversity: the Mizraim Principles', by Dr. Parks, this one is a close second! If you want a pastor's heart in the telling of the story--this one is best! If you want sound principles for everyday life that you or a graduate can use, and really well-organized--go with Parks (if you can get your hands on a copy!). Swindoll does this as part of a series, and it's excellent! These are the best two Joseph books around.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Knowledge!.......2001-12-11

Once again, Charles Swindoll has brought a biblical character to life. I felt as if I was going "through" with Joseph! Mr. Swindoll makes it easy to relate what happen to Joseph with his family relations to today's family. If you're having difficulty relating to the trials and tribulations your family faces, read this book and get a revelation from God!

When Rita Golden Gelman traveled to Mexico during a two-month separation from her husband, she hoped to satisfy an old craving for adventure and, in the process, rejuvenate herself and her marriage. Little did she know it was the beginning of a new life, not just as a divorcée, but as a nomad of the world. Since 1986, Gelman has had no permanent address and no possessions except those she can carry. She travels without a plan, guided by instinct, serendipitous opportunities, and a remarkable ability to connect with people. At first her family and friends accused her of running away, but Gelman knew she had embarked on a journey of self-discovery and a way of life that is inspiring and enviable.

We know Gelman is not your typical middle-aged housewife from LA when, on that first trip to Mexico, she randomly picks a Zapotec village and decides to live there for a month, knowing nothing about the culture or the language. When she arrives, the villagers run away from her, terrified. By the time she leaves, there are hugs and tears. From there she travels to Guatemala and Nicaragua, Israel and the Galapagos Islands. But the heart of the book--and her 15-year journey--is Indonesia, where she lives for eight years. It is Bali that forever changes how she looks at the world, facilitated by her friendship with an aging prince. Tu Aji not only invites her to live with his family but decides that the education of Rita will be his final duty in life. Wherever she goes, Gelman has an uncanny ability to slip into other ways of life and become part of a community. And she is a person for whom doors open widely--her seatmate on the plane to Bali scrawls the prince's name on a piece of paper, she talks her way into a sojourn at Camp Leakey in Borneo where orangutans are studied, and an entire village in a remote part of Irian Jaya prays for the clouds to clear so her plane can land--and they do! Gelmen's secret is her passion for people. That being the case, the book is short on descriptions of place, but long on the rarer inside view of the peoples and customs of those places. This in itself is treat enough, but Gelman's animated and intimate story comes with a kicker--it's never too late to fulfill those dreams. --Lesley Reed

Book Description

“I move throughout the world without a plan, guided by instinct, connecting through trust, and constantly watching for serendipitous opportunities.” —From the Preface

Tales of a Female Nomad is the story of Rita Golden Gelman, an ordinary woman who is living an extraordinary existence. At the age of forty-eight, on the verge of a divorce, Rita left an elegant life in L.A. to follow her dream of connecting with people in cultures all over the world. In 1986 she sold her possessions and became a nomad, living in a Zapotec village in Mexico, sleeping with sea lions on the Galapagos Islands, and residing everywhere from thatched huts to regal palaces. She has observed orangutans in the rain forest of Borneo, visited trance healers and dens of black magic, and cooked with women on fires all over the world. Rita’s example encourages us all to dust off our dreams and rediscover the joy, the exuberance, and the hidden spirit that so many of us bury when we become adults.

A definite recommended read.

If you've ever wanted to grab your back pack and just head for parts unknown, this book is the kick in the *** you need. The copy I just purchased is the 11th one - I give this book to every woman I know and they all tell me they have passed it on and bought another for themselves. A gem, a treasure, a wonderful companion, Rita Gelman's delightful account of (some of!) her adventures is a tonic. It made me realize that I am not the only one who dreams - and that others make their dreams come true. Read it, savor it and pass it on. In her highly personal tale Ms. Gelman speaks for many of us. Rita Golden Gelman is an inspiration to all women world travelers.I can't imagine anyone reading this book and not wanting to catch the next plane to adventure and self discovery.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Heart Warming.......2007-07-27

I cried when I finished Tales of a Female Nomad. I think it was because I didn't want it to be over!

I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of Rita's adventures around the globe; from her first evening in Mexico, in which she is fearful to eat alone, to her complete transformation in the last chapter in which she is living in a Thai village, unable to communicate in the local language but heartily helping to prepare meals with her hosts.

I am an experienced traveler and thought that I knew a lot about Globetrotting. But having now read Rita's book, I realize there is so much more depth to be had, not only in my travels but in my every day life.

I dispute the claims that this book is self-indulgent, self-congratulatory or dishonest. Rather, Rita makes a point of giving back at every opportunity. The one instance in which she feels she may be forcing her ideals on the locals, she promptly removes herself from the situation, recognizing that she is an observer and must not try to change others. She is completely honest about her experiences and, over time, she learns to dive in to every situation without hesitation and with all of her heart.

I have a list of women friends that I can't wait to buy additional copies for!

5 out of 5 stars Tales of aFemale Nomad.......2007-07-07

Written with honesty and clarity, Tales of a Female Nomad shows that when a person is true to themselves, the world opens up. Fantastic description of cultures and the individuals within those cultures. A brave and fulfilling journey.

4 out of 5 stars Citizen Welles is a Fine Biography.......2003-08-30

Frank Brady is a professor who knows how to write interesting prose about the fascinating figure of Orson Welles. Welles was a prodigy as a child who reach the heights of film glory with Citizen Kane! Brady points out that Welles excelled in radio, television, the movies and on the legitimate stage.
Welles was a man of Falstaffian stature whose appetites were
gargantuan whether it be wine, women, song and brilliant productions of his creative mind.
This book is not a candidate for the E True Hollywood Story or the National Enquirer! Brady provides a detailed account of the reason Welles will be remembered-his work in popular culture
        for several decades.
Anyone wishing to know more about Welles, media in America or the difficulty of being a genius maverick in Hollwood will derive profit from this excellent biography. Highly Recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Brady's bio a lively yet academic examination of Welles.......1999-05-25

Frank Brady's "Citizen Welles" is one of the most well-respected biographies of Welles, and still one of the most underrated. Let me explain. Brady's book actually qualifies as a very early examination of Welles' life, beating Bogdanovich's "This is Orson Welles" and Simon Callow's "Orson Welles: The Road to Xanadu" onto the shelves by many years. It perhaps is not thought of as an early work because its publication was delayed several years due to trouble Brady's publishers had, not him. If it had been released when Brady first completed it, it probably would have earned much more acclaim than it already has. Brady anticipates much of the interest surrounding Welles and answers many key questions surrounding the man. He also thoroughly examines many areas of the famous man's life previously ignored by Welles historians, including Welles' abortive South American trip, which damaged Welles in Hollywood far more than "The Magnificent Ambersons" trauma or the battle Welles had to fight to get "Citizen Kane" released. Brady also avoids the awful bias of earlier works by Houseman and Kael that so macerated Welles, telling the man's story with frankness and understanding. It should be the first book anyone reads about Welles, and the book referred to by anyone reading any other work on the mythic director. With movies on Welles in production for HBO and the big screen (Tim Robbins' "The Cradle Will Rock"), interest in Welles only increases with time. That makes Brady's exhaustively-researched and smoothly-written book a keeper.

        5 out of 5 stars A well-researched, objective account of a fascinating artist.......1999-05-24

Frank Brady's biography dismantles the endless rumors and fabrications surrounding the life of Orson Welles. It is different from most of the other biographies on Welles in that it relies very heavily on research. Other biographies seem to subjective, and pay too much attention to the lies Welles sometimes told about himself. Ladies and gentleman, if you're into Welles, this is the one. A class 'A' "Mercury Theatre" production.

          Book Description

Citizen Kane is arguably the most admired and significant film since the advent of talking pictures. No other film is quite so interesting from both artistic and political points of view. To study it even briefly is to learn a great deal about American history, motion-picture style, and the literary aspects of motion-picture scripts. Rather than a sterile display of critical methodologies, James Naremore has gathered a set of essays that represent the essential writings on the film. It gives the reader a lively set of critical interpretations, together with the necessary production information, historical background, and technical understanding to comprehend the film's larger cultural significance. Selections range from the anecdotal --Peter Bogdanovich's interview with Orson Welles--to the critical, with discussions on the scripts and sound track, and a discussion of what accounts for the film's enduring popularity. Contributors include James Naremore, Peter Bogdanovich, Jonathan Rosenbaum, Robert L. Carringer, Francois Thomas, Michael Denning, Laura Mulvey, Peter Wollen, and Paul Arthur.

4 out of 5 stars Read this if you write!.......2005-02-11

For anyone who writes in a business environment-which is probably most people reading this-The Business Style Handbook is an extremely useful reference. I especially appreciated the introductory material, which provides the basis for great marketing copy for those of us who write and edit for a living. And it's a great relief to have a handy reference for handling all those marketing-speak and tech-speak neologisms and inconsistencies.

Plus this book is much more manageable in size and price than most writers' and editors' manuals, which few people besides professional writers and editors are going to be willing to invest in. I checked it out of the library first to see whether it was worth buying, and my conclusion was "Yes, definitely!"

5 out of 5 stars How the Business Style Handbook Helped Me.......2005-01-19

I'm glad I had a copy of The Business Style Handbook when a big argument erupted in my department. One group said you have to write "an NYSE stock" while another said you have to write "a NSYE stock." I took out a copy of The Business Style Handbook (which my wife gave me for Christmas to help me improve my e-mail) to settle the dispute. By the way, it should be written "an NYSE stock." It's one of the first times I've been on the right side of a grammar argument.

A while ago, a friend asked me to review some business correspondence when I was in Beijing. Subsequently, I always thought that it would be helpful to find him some business writing reference books. When I came across The Business Style Handbook (in both English and Chinese), I recommended them to my friend.

The book is very practical. It differs from a regular dictionary in that it contains not only definitions for terms but also their cultural and social backgrounds. Look for the references for items such as 360-degree review, 401(k) or cookie. They are very helpful to people with different language backgrounds. Another advantage is the included examples, such as how to properly use kudos. Additionally, the first five chapters provide an excellent summary on modern business writing. In all, no matter it is for a beginner or as a reference, the book provides a lot of value to its readers.

I write on tight deadlines and can't afford to make mistakes in the work I produce. This book is a big help. It is a valued resource for questions on grammar, spelling and pronunciation. And it is written in plain english; no need to wade through discussions on the fine points of grammar. It also makes a great gift.

I spend a good deal of time at work writing documents and e-mails. When I have questions about how to write something correctly, The Business Style Handbook is my reference tool of first resort. Its focus on business and finance is invaluable. Where else could I quickly find out whether to use a hyphen in enterprise-wide or parentheses with 401 (k)? The chapter on e-mail is also useful, as is the information from the Fortune 500.
It is now suggested reading for the employees in our Fortune 500 company.
