3 out of 5 stars Great lawyer, okay book........2006-05-14

Law students who have just taken a course in professional repsonsibility may characterize Joe Jamail as a bad man, as unscrupulouas, as a jerk. That is probably true. But, argumentum ad hominem. Just because the man is bad, his work may not be. The facts are that Jamail is one of the most successful American lawyers of all time; that he fights a tremendous fight for his clients. Read this book for what it is, an account of an outstanding lawyer and his interesting cases; not as an intro to legal ethics.

5 out of 5 stars The Other Reviewers Are Obviously NOT from Texas!.......2004-01-24

Mr. Jamail's book is terrific. Yes he's a little full of himself but his results are real and he has accomplished a lot in his legal career. He's also had a few major financial scores that have put him in a very unique class of lawyer. This is a fun book with many stories about individual cases that made an impression on Joe and thus inspired him to fight for his client.

4 out of 5 stars Enertaining.......2004-01-24

I found Joe's book entertaining and easy to read. His passion for his clients and job is a trait not held by most in the law profession.

1 out of 5 stars Jamail is a jerk.......2004-01-08

Joe Jamail's book is a microcosm of his superiority complex. He thinks he is above the little man and this book reeks of his own feelings of self-importance. Why anyone would want to read this piece of garbage is beyond me.

1 out of 5 stars Jamail is a jerk and his book sucks........2004-01-08

Joe Jamail is an arrogant jerk. He has the audacity to claim he is above the little man and superior. His book sucks and reeks of self-importance.

To many, Bill Murray is the star of movies like Ghostbusters (reissued with certain scenes deleted and a Mystery Science Theatre-style commentary in 1999). But to golf aficionados, Murray is the clown in godawful "Hee-Haw-aiian" golf garb who plays shamelessly to the crowds at charity tee-offs from Pebble Beach to the Greater Milwaukee Open. And there is only one Bill Murray role, the gopher-snuffing, turf-smoking greenskeeper Carl Spackler in Caddyshack, whose fantasy of golf heroism gives this book its title. "This crowd has gone deadly silent," Spackler mutters with club in hand and no crowd in sight, "a Cinderella story outta nowhere--former greenskeeper and now about to become the Masters champion!"

Cinderella Story is really two books. The first is a string of outrageously digressive anecdotes about Murray's club-wielding adventures with Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer ("Incandescent ... he and Patton were born to lead armies"), Mike Ditka, John Denver, Chi Chi Rodriguez ("He had more fun playing golf than any person I'd ever seen."), Clint Eastwood, and Michael Jordan ("Relax," Murray tells himself, "his nickname is 'air,' not 'sand.'"). The prose style is mock-hepcat, insanely allusive, and very smart, like his screen persona.

This book is also the amusing, affecting autobiography of a kid who started out caddying for 60 cents a half-hour with his brothers--they got busted for giving a blind golfer three hole-in-one trophies--and wound up in showbiz. There are lots of showbiz anecdotes too, especially about Caddyshack, "arguably the greatest film ever made, although perhaps that's a drunken argument," as Murray observes. He'll get no argument from golfers, who will thrill to his expert ridicule of their mutual passion. --Tim Appelo

Book Description

One of the funniest, most beloved, and most often quoted entertainers in the world tells his tale of Life and Golf--and of somehow surviving both.

With his brilliant creation, groundskeeper Carl Spackler, and the outrageous success of the film Caddyshack firmly etched into the American consciousness, Bill Murray and golf have become synonymous. Filled with Murray's trademark deadpan and dead-on humor, Cinderella Story chronicles his love affair with golf from the life lessons he learned as a caddy--"how to smoke, curse, play cards. But more important, when to"--to his escapades on the Pro-Am golf circuit at the Augusta National and as a fan at the Masters, the U.S. Open, and the Western Open. An up-by-the-bootstraps tale of a man, his muse, and our society's fascination with a little white ball, Cinderella Story is one pilgrim's bemused path through the doglegs.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Funny stuff.......2006-01-07

Maybe I'm biased because I think Caddyshack is the funniest movie of all time, but I enjoyed this book, even though it only took a couple of hours to read. It won't win any awards for composition, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's a really funny, entertaining book...sounds like Caddyshack the movie, doesn't it?

2 out of 5 stars Yikes! This was BAD...........2005-08-17

I was at the local library looking at books in the golf section. I've read a couple by Tommy Armour and one by Ben Hogan, both were good and informative.

I saw three copies of this Murry prose on the shelf. Thought, hey this should be good and interesting. I quickly noticed that all 3 copies had not been creased, thus unread.

Went and sat down and started reading.....then my mind started to wonder...then I flipped through and looked at the pictures....then quickly returned the book to the shelf. Bill, stick with the game itself and leave the word processor to sending quips to Chevy.

The stories did not grab me, the humor was non-existant, and there were very little facts that I could grasp of interest.

I did like the movie Caddyshack, but Dangerfield stole that show, Carl the groundskeeper didn't really do much for me as a character or make me laugh. Sorry Bill, but Stripes was cool :)

2 stars for the pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Cinderella Story: My Life in Golf By: Bill Murray.......2004-01-14

Not only is Bill Murray a great comedian, he is also a good writer. I found this book very enjoyable and extremely funny. For a man who has never written a book before, I believe Bill has done an excellent job. From the very beginning you can tell that Bill has his very own style of writing, the dedication page says it all. (Pg. V to VI). In my opinion, Bill also puts a lot of voice into this book because he is reflecting on his own personal experiences. (Pg. 4, second paragraph). Bill, much like in acting, never has a serious moment throughout the book; it's all about the laughs. (Pg. 3). Above all though, I noticed that when reading this book, it's as if you aren't reading the book, but listening to Bill give a stand-up comedy routine or sitting at a bar sharing a drink with him. There is no book, its just stories. He is just reminiscing about the past, be it about golf or otherwise. Bill's stories really have no start or finish, but just lead into another, funnier one. (Pg. 210 to 211). If I had to sum this book up in one word, it would be simply hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars Everything I expected.......2002-07-30

Hey, it's a book on golf written by Bill Murray. I didn't expect an intense discussion on golf...I didn't expect an intense discussion on Bill's life. I expected a funny, witty, clever, and subtlely wise book about some of Bill's adventures and lessons learned from golf and life. And that's what I got.

It's one of the few books I read from cover to cover in one sitting. It was that funny, witty, clever, and subtlely wise...to me anyways...

1 out of 5 stars Incoherent and not funny.......2002-06-20

Yes, Bill Murray is one of the best comedic actors of any Hollywood era. Yes, "Caddyshack" is every bit the cinematic masterpiece people in the know tout it as, even if no published critic in the world agrees. Yes, Murray's persona and his golf background would seemingly make for a diverting read. But Cinderella Story is decidedly not that read. It's a mess of a book, written sloppily and fairly joke-free.

Big type and generous spacing make Cinderella Story about as long as this review (not very). But even in that small a frame, it becomes clear that Murray's gifts are strictly in performance and not in writing. Stories run into each other, coming out of nowhere, and only to mention some of the famous folks Murray has hit the links with (Michael Jordan, Clint Eastwood, etc.). Those stories are rarely interesting, and are told without any sense of structure. Murray (or his ghostwriter George Peper, who apparently needs a ghostwriter of his own) jumps from one story to another and back without helping the reader keep everything sorted out. Superior literary humorists, like Bill Bryson, have a talent for telling anecdotes in a concise, purposeful fashion. That's what's missing here. Only a brief, and I mean brief, recalling of the original "Cinderella story" scene from "Caddyshack" offers readers any enjoyment. The rest is muddled and ultimately boring.

Other sections of the book include pictures and filler anecdotes from other people telling stories about how funny Murray is. If only this book was. Look, Bill Murray is an outstanding comedian who is woefully underrated as a true actor. But Cinderella Story only makes you want to see him do what he does best, and not read what does poorly.

      Book Description

Charles Dickens in Cyberspace opens a window on a startling set of literary and scientific links between contemporary American culture and the nineteenth-century heritage it often repudiates. Surveying a wide range of novelists, scientists, filmmakers, and theorists from the past two centuries, Jay Clayton traces the concealed circuits that connect the telegraph with the Internet, Charles Babbage's Difference Engine with the digital computer, Frankenstein's monster with cyborgs and clones, and Dickens' life and fiction with all manner of contemporary popular culture--from comic books and advertising to recent novels and films. In the process, Clayton argues for two important principles: that postmodernism has a hidden or repressed connection with the nineteenth-century and that revealing those connections can aid in the development of a historical cultural studies. In Charles Dickens in Cyberspace nineteenth-century figures--Jane Austen, Charles Darwin, Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, Henry James, Ada Lovelace, Joseph Paxton, Mary Shelley, and Mary Somerville--meet a lively group of counterparts from today: Andrea Barrett, Greg Bear, Peter Carey, Helene Cixous, Alfonso Cuaron, William Gibson, Donna Haraway, David Lean, Richard Powers, Salman Rushdie, Ridley Scott, Susan Sontag, Neal Stephenson, Bruce Sterling, and Tom Stoppard. The juxtaposition of such a diverse cast of characters leads to a new way of understanding the "undisciplined culture" the two eras share, an understanding that can suggest ways to heal the gap that has long separated literature from science. Combining storytelling and scholarship, this engaging study demonstrates in its own practice the value of a self-reflective stance toward cultural history. Its personal voice, narrative strategies, multiple points of view, recursive loops, and irony emphasize the improvisational nature of the methods it employs. Yet its argument is serious and urgent: that the afterlife of the nineteenth century continues to shape the present in diverse and sometimes conflicting ways.

5 out of 5 stars Postmodern Convergence of Science and Literature.......2003-09-28

Who knew that Victorian science was populated with such unruly characters or that postmodernism could herald the convergence of the two cultures? Here is a critic who is unafraid to write with gusto about today's return to literature and who understands the ways of both novelists and hackers. I enjoyed the acount of Charles Babbage beside William Gibson and Bruce Sterling, Neal Stevenson with Charles Dickens.

5 out of 5 stars Jay Clayton's Charles Dickens in Cyberspace.......2003-09-02

This book shows such smarts and is such fun that I've been talking it up to every reader I know. Anyone interested in Cultural Studies or the nineteenth century novel will want this book (in fact, they might already have it, because the advance word on it has been good), but it will undoubtedly appeal to a larger audience, too. Jay Clayton demonstrates a familiarity with a wide array of further fields: communications technology, genetics, science fiction, film, and contemporary literature. Readers interested in any of these subjects will find that the historical parallels and hidden connections Clayton establishes between them are both unexpected and absorbing. What's more, Clayton can write. This is not a book choked by jargon or made ponderous by clumsy language. Here is a learned author who explains himself with gusto and grace.
Clayton's book combines several propositions. First, that contemporary studies of American culture are essentially amnesiac and could only benefit from some historical perspective. Second, that the tendency towards emotional affirmation and homemade mysticism which characterizes our multicultural age is in many ways analogous to the Romantic era's reaction against the hyper-rationality of the Enlightenment. Third, that the enormous divide between the Humanities and the Sciences, which originally opened in the early years of the Victorian era, is now closing again as today's Information Technology blurs disciplinary distinctions and promotes cross-pollination between discreet endeavors. Clayton argues convincingly on all three points, and he weaves his several theses together to reveal how our postmodern complexities have antecedents in an earlier age.
It is rare to find a thoroughly informed author who can anatomize an historical period in an accessible fashion. It's rarer still to find one with sufficient detachment to offer new analysis of his own times. Jay Clayton does both of these things, and he does them with an agreeable combination of persuasion and charm.
A pleasure. An education. Highly recommended.

Lois Greenfield is uniquely adept at capturing the vibrancy and joy of dance. Part choreographer, part photographer, she does more than seize dancers in motion in her images--they seem to define the essence of movement itself. In this book, she has categorized her dancers as either earthbound or airborne, and it is hard to decide which images are more exhilarating. In the first set, a shot of a dancer taken the moment her toes hit the ground, with her body and filmy skirt still very much aloft, captures the fleeting experience of the transition. A dancer changes form beneath her stretchy curtain of a costume, seemingly grappling with gravity itself. Another is earthbound as she leaps up with an elongated tights leg pinned to the ground and anchoring her from below. Groups of dancers commingle, Pilobolus-style, and reshape the scope of human form. In the air, Greenfield's subjects fly, merge, and collide in a symphony of shapes that she somehow, unbelievably, captures on film.

All of the nearly 100 black-and-white photos in the book were shot in a studio with vacant backdrops so that the images sail forth unimpeded by background distractions. Greenfield offers short notes on many of the pictures that include information about the dancer as well as fascinating notes on how she achieved the image. Of one shot of three dancers seemingly pinned over each other and stuck like magnets to the same wall, she writes: "The dancers are running sequentially headlong into the wall. The first person is held up by the pressure of the second body. The third guy has to grab the top of the wall across the width of the two bodies. The moment I shot is when the outside man, Ned, just lets go from the wall."

Airborne is a breathtaking treat for lovers and dance and photography alike.

          Book Description

Breaking Bounds brought Lois Greenfield's pioneering work in dance photography widespread acclaim and a dedicated following. Now with Airborne, her first book in over six years, Greenfield takes us to spectacular new heights. Collaborating with some of the world's finest dancers from such illustrious dance companies as the Martha Graham Dance Company, Pilobolus, San Francisco Ballet, the Parsons Dance Company, and Ballet Tech, she captures moments of startling grace and power. In 90 duotone images, Greenfield's dancers defy gravity and push the limits of the possible. A preface takes us behind the scenes in her studio, and the photographer's own captions illuminate the challenges of making pictures that recreate the seeming effortlessness of dance. As inspiring as it is technically remarkable, this collection of incomparable images is sure to captivate dance lovers, photographers, and all who admire the beauty and strength of the human body.

You will think that this was photoshopped, airbrushed, other otherwise tricked up. It's not. These are simple, real photgraphs of dancers that are hard to believe as real.

Modern dance is something not everyone understands. This collection will make you wonder how it is that human beings can create such kinetic sculpture with their bodies and some pieces of cloth.

Wonderful book. None of the photographs are tricked -- that is, all are usual perspectives, normal orientation (what looks like the floor at first glance really is), no strings, no unseen bars or plates, no studio retouching of former. (See LG's preface.) Truly amazing work.

I have just started to read this book, but the first chapter - on discardng - is excellent. This topic is not really covered in any other bridge books that I have seen - and Kelsey's discussion of it is well worth the price of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Tired of discarding from 10xxx and letting 3NT make?.......2001-02-23

Are you sick and tired of discarding from Txxx and letting 3NT romp home, when you could have discarded from JTxx and set it? Are you weary of watching declarer happily test one suit to see if it breaks, then try a finesse if that doesn't work, then try a squeeze if that doesn't work, when you could have forced declarer to commit to an early decision before he could extract much information about the defensive holdings? Are you guilt-ridden about the times you happily gave partner an early ruff and then watched him squirm because you endplayed him? Are you fed up with being -650 on a board and opening the score slip to discover most of the field was -620? Then read this book -- it is devoted to restricting declarer's options, preserving the defenders' options, and discarding correctly in situations that come up 3 times a session, not once a quarter. Buy two and give partner one. Hide it from the opponents -- soon you will be declarer again, so you mustn't let them read it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Corporate Taxation.......2007-06-19

This is an excellent book to understand Subchapter C. The order it follows is methodical. It goes to explain all the tax issues that arise from formation of the corporation (incorporation and contributions) to midlife events (dividends, redemptions) to liquidation. It deals with taxable and non-taxable reorganizations and with such interesting issues as Section 304 transactions. It is not and cannot be a complete guide to corporate taxation. it would have to be several volumes, but it accomplishes perfectly what it is meant to do. Cheryl Block did a fantastic job. the example and explanations are very useful.

4 out of 5 stars Corporate Tax for Dummies.......2006-03-24

This volume reduces into terms capable of being readily absorbed the application of Subchapter C. The examples and explanations are basic while conveying the needed concepts of various treatments of contributed property, boot, distributions, attribution rules, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Best Corporate Tax Review Book on the Market.......2004-11-20

Professor Block's book is really, really good - very easy to understand. She manages to make what are complex tax laws understandable -- I couldn't imagine taking my corp tax class without this study aid. The writing is unusually good for a law treatise.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely got me through Corp Tax with flying colors.......2004-03-16

Although I went to every class of Corp. Tax at the LL.M. level and read every assignment, things never came to me as clearly as they did after working with this book. Ms. Block does an excellent job of describing transactions and their tax consequences with intelligent simplicity and brings even the hardest concepts within the tax novice's grasp.

            5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2002-08-07

It's the best corporate tax book out there period.

            5 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful.......2002-08-04

Corp. tax is one of the more difficult courses in Law School, but is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in transactional practice, or looking to improve their skills in using challenging statutory material. This book makes the subject a great deal easier---one of the better study aids I've used. The explanations are very lucid, and the problems are extremely helpful for exam prep. Keep this within arm's reach of your I.R.C.

            5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2000-02-07

During my LLM corp. tax class I found this to be invaluable. I also refer to it in my practice.
