Book Description
America's most beloved columnist shares 40 years of advice through letters to her only child, published here for the first time.In this witty, wise, and intensely personal collection of letters to her daughter Margo, Ann Landers delivers her own unintentional memoir. The volume is both a moving portrait of a mother/daughter relationship and a keen social history of America between 1958 and 2001. Peppered with incisive information and gossip, Esther "Eppie" Lederer (Landers' real name) offers insight on everything from marriage and divorce to growing up and growing old. A first-hand account of the myriad changes in attitudes and mores spanning the last half of the last century, readers will delight in Landers' signature practical wisdom and sharp eye for the absurd. As funny and loving as they are stern and acerbic, these letters reveal the real woman behind the Ann Landers moniker--a spectacularly original writer, wife, and mother.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book but ..........2004-02-24
Unless you worship Ann Landers for years and know her background to some degree, this book may be quite anecdotal and a gathered pieces of personal events.
A Wonderful Read.......2003-11-17
Growing up I regularly read Ann Landers' column. I can even remember my favorite ones --- the one with the meatloaf recipe and the one about how to hang a roll of toilet paper. Living in a small town in New Jersey, I got a new perspective on the world from letters signed by people with signatures like Desperate in Dallas and Confused in Cincinnati. Sometimes I would howl at what people were asking while other times I was shocked at the depths of the problems that people shared.
Reading the column each day I formed a picture of Landers. When she passed away in 2002, I read the tributes to her and realized this was the end of an era.
A LIFE IN LETTERS: Ann Landers Letters to Her Only Child showed me another side of Landers. For here were the letters that personally defined her ---- those she wrote to her daughter Margo over forty-four years. Broken up into four sections, the book tells the story of a close mother/daughter relationship. Here, again in her own words, we come to know Esther "Eppie" Lederer (Landers' real name).
Whether she was giving Margo advice, checking in to see how she was or lavishing praise, Landers wrote with the tone of a well-meaning friend. The excitement that Landers felt in sharing her life with Margo is touchingly evident. Many of her notes to Margo were hurried pieces while others were long and leisurely, but all were personal and laced with love.
Margo has said, "I loved putting this collection together. And strange as it may sound, reading them all, together, was an entirely different experience than seeing them one at a time. A LIFE IN LETTERS - even for me - is like watching two lives unfolding."
The book is punctuated with notes from Margo that give background to the letters. At one point in her introduction she was astounded to learn that her mom had saved all of her letters, just as she had saved her mom's. It's clear that this writing ---and their relationship --- meant a lot to them both.
Readers also get a look at another side of Landers. We see a woman who was politically active and had a strong business sense. She had access to the powerful and the famous because of who she was --- people such as Walter Cronkite, Hubert Humphery and Cardinal Joseph Bernadin. She also believed in many causes and supported them with her time and her opinions.
There is enough reference to the feud between Landers and her twin sister, who penned the Dear Abby column for years, to be honest, but Landers takes the high road and remains a real lady.
Right after Landers' death, I clipped her meatloaf recipe from the paper and made it. After closing Margo's book I vowed to write more letters to my sons. Last week I was passing my older son's room and saw a recent IM session between us printed and tacked onto the wall. Sure instant communication like that is wonderful, but the preservation of letters like those in this book reminds me how much history we lose when we do not write.
Whether you are a Landers fan or just relish the chance to voyeur a very special relationship as it grows over the years, A LIFE IN LETTERS is a wonderful read.

One of baseball's more popular personalities, Joe Torre had to wait more than three decades as manager and player to finally reach his sport's Promised Land. His autobiography is an insider's account of how he led the New York Yankees to a championship, but it's more than that; it is also a heart-warming story of a close-knit Brooklyn family that ends in emotional triumph on and off the field.
Book Description
"Maybe the good Lord was just waiting for me to put on the pinstripes."
When Joe Torre was fired as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals in 1995, he thought his career in baseball was over. After more than three decades and
4,200 games as a player and manager, one thing had always eluded him--winning a World Series.
He had all but given up his dream when the New York Yankees made him an offer to manage their 1996 club. Encouraged by his wife and others, he accepted, and so began one of the greatest seasons in the fabled history of the New York Yankee franchise and one of the most inspiring, heartwarming stories in all of
baseball.
Here is the ultimate insider's record of that unforgettable season by the man whose personal struggles captured the hearts and imaginations of fans
everywhere. Tough, gritty, but always fair and honest, Torre vividly reveals how he turned a potentially volatile mix of talented youngsters such as Andy
Pettitte and Derek Jeter, seasoned veterans like Wade Boggs and Paul O'Neill, and so-called "problem" players like Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden into a cohesive unit that cared more about winning than personal egos. He explains how he played his hunches and earned his team's confidence and respect as he
focused his players from spring training on toward one goal: the World Series. And he did it all in a pressure-filled sports city that expects nothing less
than a champion.
But how he did it is only part of this remarkable story. For at the same time that Torre was overcoming the odds on the field, his family was facing much
greater hardships off the field. He speaks candidly and emotionally of the tragedy of his oldest brother Rocco's sudden death, and the agonizing ordeal of
his other older brother, Frank, who waited for the heart transplant that could save his life. It was his wife, Ali, who gave him the faith to believe
anything was possible. Together with his sisters Rae and Sister Marguerite, a nun from Queens, they dared to dream the impossible. In a fairy-tale ending
not even the best Hollywood scriptwriter could imagine, Frank Torre got his new heart the day before the Yankees won their first World Series championship
since 1978--and Joe Torre won his first ever.
Here is Joe Torre's own story--told for the first time in his own words--from his early childhood in Brooklyn, to his celebrated baseball career playing with the likes of Hank Aaron and Bob Gibson, to his stint as the first native New Yorker ever to manage the Yankees. Offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at a season to remember and a man who went through so much to reach the pinnacle of his profession, Chasing the Dream is more than just another sports
story. It is a poignant reminder of why we love the game--and how, sometimes, nice guys do finish first.
From the Hardcover edition.

Great guy, great story. Read this book and see how it came about that Joe Torre is one of the classiest things that has happened to Major League Baseball-
A Gentleman Manager Realizing His Goals.......2007-01-11
This is a good book about an exemplary player, manager and overall good person from the game of baseball. The book puts forth his philosophy of working hard to achieve your goals. I was impressed even more than I already was with Joe Torre after reading this. How he got to manage the Yankees and to successfully perform with quiet restraint and insightful reason once he made it that prestigious position makes for very fine and captivating reading.
Great book about a great man.......2006-10-25
As an avid Yankee fan, I was looking forward to reading this book, and I was not disappointed. With the help of Tom Verducci, the book was put together very well and kept me interested the entire time.
Many people see Joe Torre as only a great manager, however, he was a very good ball player as well. As you read the book and learn about his experiences while growing up in the Major Leagues you learn why he does certain things as a manager, which I found to be possibly the most interesting part of the book. It was great the way he explained how he dealt with certain situations, based on his past experiences. It was interesting to see exactly how he thinks during a game and how he bounces ideas off the great Don Zimmer. The 96 Yanks were a special team, and he definitely helped them win with this managerial techniques and philosophies. This would only be the first championship for what would soon be a dynasty.
The book covers his entire life, from childhood to the time he wrote the book. You see exactly how certain aspects of his childhood stayed with him and influenced his personal life for years. Torre is a great man, with a very interesting past, and this book will teach you a lot about the game and the way things are behind the scenes of the game. You will also notice how baseball goes through changes during his time in the game. If your a Yankee fan, this is a must read. If you aren't, you will still find it to be enjoyable if you are a fan of baseball.
The Yankees.......2006-08-30
While I am a Yankee hater I admire Joe Torre.
I enjoyed the book and learned a lot more about a great person and manager
An Ordinary Book About an Extraordinary Accomplishment.......2006-05-27
I was born in the Bronx, not far from the Stadium. I'm a Yankee fan and a great fan of Joe Torre as their manager. Perhaps that's why I am so disappointed in this book. I expected much more than just an un-elaborated listing of what happened in Torre's life. It is as though the writers used Post-its on a large bulletin board on which to write a few spare sentences for each event and then arranged the Post-its to make a book. There isn't much art there. I compare it to Tony LaRussa's book, "Three Nights in August" which is beautifully written. LaRussa's writer makes you feel what he (LaRussa) was feeling. You are with him in the dugout, watching him when he is alone in a restaurant after a game, and enjoying his thoughts on baseball and its participants. On the other hand, even Torre's recital of the sadness in his childhood didn't really affect me. I suspect that part of the difference may lie in the differences in personality between the intellectual and passionate LaRussa and the working class Torre. And I was disappointed in "Chasing the Dream" even before I began reading it. Part of the fun when you open a baseball book to read it for the first time is to check the index to find your favorite players. You read the parts about them first and then go back and read the whole book. I checked for an index to read about Tino. No index. I see that other reviewers like this book a lot better than I do. I don't think the book is really bad - it's just too ordinary. It doesn't do justice to its subject. I gave it four stars instead of the three I really think it should get, because I like Torre.

Customer Reviews:
Big Book of Kakuro.......2007-01-30
This is a good book to begin your Kakuro experience. The instructions are well-written. The puzzles begin very simply, getting increasingly more difficult as you progress through the book. Squares are big. Lots of room to write notes in the margins. Definitely THE book to start with.
Presents a Challenge.......2006-08-13
I am an avid CrossSums fan and I am definitely finding this book challenging and I have not even started the difficult ones yet.
Mixed Reactions.......2006-08-08
I was disappointed at the small size of many of the puzzles. Some were as small as 4x4 and took less than 1 minute to solve for anyone who has worked Kakuro puzzles before. Half of the puzzles were 9x9 or smaller. However, this could make the book attractive to those new to Kakuro...they could develop some sense of accomplishment on the early, small and easy puzzles. Another positive, 20% of the puzzles were hybrid Kakuro-Sodoku puzzles. I've not seen these elsewhere and I found them delightfully challenging and complicated.
Book Description
What kakuro fan could resist this huge collection? Featuring 940 grids in varying levels of difficulty, it has more than enough to satisfy even the most avid enthusiast.
Half sudoku, half crossword, language-free kakuro is set to become the next worldwide puzzle phenomenon. The basics are simple: just fill in the empty squares using numbers from 1 to 9 so that the sum of each horizontal set of squares equals the clue on its left, and the sum of each vertical set of squares equals the clue on the top. No number can appear more than once in any sum.
An introduction explains all the rules, gives good solving tips, and takes beginners through a sample puzzle.
Customer Reviews:
The Big Book of Tiny Kakuro Puzzles.......2007-01-26
The front cover shows puzzles that are 13x22 spaces (if I remember right), but every puzzle inside is only 10x10 (9x9 effective, since the top and left lines are not open). This is fine for beginners, but is a big disappointment for anyone used to bigger puzzles. It is also rather deceptive advertising. My suggestion would be to buy the Dell Kakuro Cross Sums magazines (less than 3 dollars at Wal-Mart), which comes out quarterly. I find them much more satisfying than the "bite-size" puzzles in this book. BTW, Dell has been putting out these puzzles since 1950 under the title "Cross Sums".
