      Book Description

Joe Kurmaskie, dubbed the “Metal Cowboy” by a blind rancher he encountered one icy morning in Idaho, has been addicted to the intoxicating freedom and power of the bicycle ever since he “borrowed” his big sister’s banana-seat bike at the age of five. As he careened down the neighborhood hill, much to his parents’ dismay, Joe set in motion what has become a lifelong love affair with the road and the wheel. In Metal Cowboy, Joe offers up an infectious and big-hearted collection of true adventures and misadventures, chronicling his time touring America on his bicycle.

Whether he is climbing a tree to avoid the insistent pecking of a flock of geese in New Hampshire, tooling around a motel parking lot in Utah with a touring group of Elvis impersonators, or filling in as a last-minute scarecrow in a North Carolina Halloween parade, Joe revels in the charm of small town America and the unforgettable characters who dot our landscape. Full of energy, wit, and wisdom, Metal Cowboy is both an inspiration and a call to the road, full of the simple joy of a path well pedaled and a life less ordinary.

5 out of 5 stars Get on your bikes and ride!.......2007-05-16

A "born again bicyclist" who thinks bicycles will save the world, I went to the library to get books about cycling & bicycles. I discovered The Metal Cowboy and hung on to it even though it wasn't "technical". I tried to read a funny bit aloud to my family but I was giggling too hard.
The almost-romantic chapter is my favorite.
Reading this book makes you feel like there is hope for America's privileged middle class kids. By getting lost on a bike we can find ourselves.
Joe's most recent book (Momentum is Your Friend) is equally excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch Storytelling.......2007-02-23

      From my blog: [...]
I started reading Metal Cowboy, a collection of stories by Joe Kurmaskie, a few weeks ago at my Dad's suggestion and have had a hard time putting it down. I finished it on Thanksgiving day and knew I had to get a review up in short order. Metal Cowboy is a collection of some of Kurmaskie's stories from his long distance bike tours but I promise you that you don't need to be a cyclist to appreciate this book.

Kurmaskie is a top notch storyteller who writes in a way that is relatable to anyone who would come across his material. He also has a knack for showcasing what is good among people. Joe's optimism shines through even when he is in the worst of situations while on the road. He manages to make you feel as if you are right there with him experiencing everything he does.

One of my favorite stories in the book is called "The Tree Huggers versus the Tree Cutters as Told by the Fence-Sitter" and it begins with this quote from Theodore Roosevelt:

"Far better to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory, nor defeat."

The quote is a powerful one and it foreshadows the rest of the story nicely. In a nutshell, Joe runs across a logger while at a campsite who he becomes friends with. The logger then offers to let Joe stay with him when Joe makes his way towards his house in the coming days of his trip. Joe ends up at the loggers house but he is not home so Joe decides to camp in the woods where he meets a number of the "tree huggers" who are protesting the company that Joe's logger friend works for. Joe, trying to be friends with both the loggers and the tree huggers, ends up having to explain himself to both the logger and the tree huggers and everyone ends up not caring for Joe too much since he wasn't really up front about his true beliefs.

The story reminds us to not be afraid to talk about what we believe in and to be up front. It also urges us to step out of the gray twilight and take some chances. As entrepreneurs and VCs we are all taking our shot at changing the world. Yes, a lot of us will fail at some point in our lives but I, for one, would rather fail while taking a chance on something I believe in than to have never taken a chance at all and I think a lot of you probably feel the same way.

That said, I highly recommend picking up Metal Cowboy. You won't regret it. My only warning is the book may cause an overwhelming urge to grab your bike, load it up and head out on an extended bike tour of your own!

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-02-11

This is the first book that I read about long distance and adventure bicycle touring. I loved the stories about the people Joe meets and the situations he got into. I liked it so much that I immediately read the second book and ordered "Momentum is Your Best Friend". I would recommend the same to anyone! This was a great book.

      5 out of 5 stars Metal Cowboy - A pleasure.......2007-02-08

I have just completed Metal Cowboy and have ordered a couple of copies for riding and non-riding friends. Joe reminds me of Bill Bryson or an early Peter Egan.

      5 out of 5 stars A Life Less Ordinary.......2007-02-07

As I live my life, going from one task to another, there is a part of my brain that yearns for more, something a little closer to the edge of my comfort zone. I received "Metal Cowboy" as a gift a few years ago and there it was, the life less ordinary that always seemed to escape me! Joe Kurmaskie tells wonderful stories about true humanity and the good that exists in this world. Sure, I only get to experience a slice of this life on long weekend rides and the last full week in July on RAGBRAI, but the Metal Cowboy makes me hopeful for the future.

              Book Description

The ethical and ideological implications of cross-cultural image-making continue to stir debate among anthropologists, film scholars, and museum professionals. This innovative book focuses on the contested origins of ethnographic film from the late nineteenth century to the 1920s, vividly depicting the dynamic visual culture of the period as it collided with the emerging discipline of anthropology and the new technology of motion pictures. Featuring more than 100 illustrations, the book examines museums of natural history, world's fairs, scientific and popular photography, and the early filmmaking efforts of anthropologists and commercial producers to investigate how cinema came to assume the role of mediator of cultural difference at the beginning of the twentieth century.

                      Book Description

A rousing history of one of the most bitterly fought campaigns of World War II, as seen through the eyes of those who fought and survived.

From 1939 until 1942, Hitler's U-boats--the submarine fleet dubbed the "gray wolves"--threatened to accomplish what his air force had been unable to achieve: to starve Britain into submission. The ensuing struggle for control of the storm-tossed Atlantic trade routes became a full-scale war-within-a-war, and one which led to astounding losses: Allied powers would lose more than fifty thousand men, and fifteen million tons of shipping, over the course of the conflict.

Through exclusive interviews with survivors on both sides-including those given for the first time by former U-boat crew members-historian and documentary producer Andrew Williams provides a riveting account of these crucial years of battle. Vividly recreating the claustrophobic and dangerous life on board, The Battle of the Atlantic succeeds in encompassing the whole experience of warfare as few other histories have, and forms an important contribution to our understanding of one of the greatest fights of the twentieth century.

1 out of 5 stars Un libro lamentable.......2006-04-25

                      5 out of 5 stars enticing.......2006-03-13

Zoe Valdes draws you into a world of adventure and mysticism with this tale of two female pirates in the Caribbean. She nevertheless acknowledges the hardships of what it was to be a female in a world of men and violence, a world apart from the social standard and expectations of the period. Her style of writing draws you in and entraps you in this interesting story based on real people.

                      1 out of 5 stars A very childish approach.......2006-01-23

I still don't understand how a book so full of inconsistencies and errors could be published (a piece of rock floating on the water?!! A Victorian piece of lingerie in the 1700's?!!). The characters are also like caricatures. The situations, ridiculous. Don't waste your time or your money.

                      Product Description

This book tells the story of a special friendship between a Great Lone Wolf and a kitten called the Buddha Baby. No matter what hardships, when evening falls, they share with one another nighttime tales that bring comfort and hope. A picture book for all ages, this story is a tribute to love, eternal friendship, and the beauty of sharing the songs of our souls.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book to help children "center".......2006-12-03

My children and I did not merely "read" this book; we have "encountered" it several times...This book has become a friend who brings us back to a settled inner soul, grounding us in the connection to nature, to nurturing, to words softly flowing to inner peace shutting out the exterior voices of turmoil. The colorful, gentle artwork draws us in and sets a wonderful mood for being receptive to poetry.

Poetry is not something that children encounter very frequently these days, as they surf the "Net" and use their iPods with all their spare time. They multi-task and rush through life at a rapid pace, too quickly sometimes to savor life. We all do this! I have found my children and I drawn back into a more reflective and appreciative attitude toward the process of living as we read the gently musing poetry about autumn and spring, the story about Great Wolf and poor Little Buddha Baby who is adopted by Great Wolf and sheltered carefully by him from the elements and as the two sing together. In a way, this book shelters us from the elements of a harried lifestyle, if only for a few still moments, and brings us back to the slower pace of life in which loving connection and "having open eyes to see and truly experience" are things which are valued and remembered. It is good to be reminded of these things. I recommend this book to any busy family.

If you're playing a norse character, or one will be in your game...buy this book! It's top notch. Even if you're not playing dark ages, if your modern day vampire came from this time period, buy this book. IT's a great read, a fantastic look at Norse society, history, and mythology, and has some truly wonderful and inventive new disciplines from the frozen northern wastes. It's one of the best supplements I've seen In years. I've used almost every single page of it. Trust me. You won't be disappointed. And for a newer white wolf supplement...that's about as high a praise as i can possibly give.

                        4 out of 5 stars A positive surprise.......1999-12-03

I admit I only bought this book because I collect all VtDA material. I was really surprised of its excellent quality, I expected some kind of cheesy Viking book, but Wolves of the Sea immerses you in Norse mythology and culture. It would be an interesting read even if no vampires were featured in it. The material concerning vampires is top notch, too. Lots of interesting concepts, new discipline uses and excellent merits and flaws.

The only drawback: it won't be compatible with every VtDA chronicle. On the other hand, it can enrich your campaign and creative players may create memorable characters.

5 out of 5 stars More than Babaric Beserkers.......1999-03-22

Vampire: The Dark Ages is a nice change of pace from the usual White Wolf vampire cliches. But this book has got to be their finest work. It gives detailed background on the Norse people during the Middle Ages, from the height of the Vikings power to their inevitable fall to the forces of Christianity. Its a setting for a Role-Playing Game, and if you can get your Storyteller to move out of the "civilized " east of europe and into the harsh world of the north, you're in for one hell of a chronicle. For Honor! For Glory! For Asgard!

This is a book that is very similliar in format to the Squadron Signal "In Action" series nad gives you a short history of the Type VII U-Boats and its subtypes. The illustrations and photos are all in black and white but still manage to give you a clear idea of how efficient and deadly these machines were (and also how tough life aboard them was).

The following excerpt is from chapter two, which describes why so many policies and procedures fail.

I have led hundreds of writing workshops. Before class I often study writing samples from those who will attend. Time after time I find the same dozen writing pitfalls that ruin policies and procedures. Just avoid this "deadly dozen," and your writing will easily outperform most of what other organizations grind out. The dozen pitfalls fit into three major groups: Writing Style, Page Layout, and Organization. . . .

Of all the "deadly dozen," the blending of policy, procedure, and task is one of the surest ways to produce a policy-procedure manual that defies reading. Often it's obvious the writer's own mind hasn't clearly distinguished policy, procedure, and task. As a result, the ideas spill onto the page like clothes from a tumble-dryer. Then the readers--if they try at all--must mentally sort out each piece and fit it into its proper place.

The differences that set policy, procedure, and task apart are important differences. They matter because each kind of written direction works best in its own format. Unless you first "think them apart," you won't be able to present each of the three in its own most readable form. What are the differences? That's the subject of the next chapter.

After ordering what I thought to be the six most likely prospects from Amazon I was most impressed with this book. It's a clearly written, step by step way to put together a complete manual from start to finish. It's the only book on the subject I would recomend.
