Currently the best Love bio.......1999-04-15
I think Love deserves a better book, but this is the best out there right now and everyone who even sort of likes Love should get it. The best part is the description of Love's amazing early life. My favorite was when she first arrived in Hollywood upon turning 10 and tried out for Kid's Incorporated--1100 talented girls trying for one part! Everyone warned her that she wouldn't make it right away, don't get discouraged, it's OK to fail, etc....and she won the part!! This book, combined with the E! Celebrity Profile that aired a few weeks back, tells you everything about how this amazing person became a star.
Everybody loves Love.......1999-02-07
Marc Shapiro did a great job with this book. What makes it even better is that it's about Jennifer Love Hewitt, my heroine and idol. I found out more about Love than I ever hoped to know... I've been a fan of hers since Kids Inc. so I naturally assumed I knew all about Love that she was willing to tell. Love is great and loving love is even greater.
Good God Jen is fine!!!.......1999-01-05
It has pictures of Jen Love Hewitt. Need I say more
It made me feel like "love" really cared about me!.......1998-12-27
Jen, is the greatest actress ever. When I read these detailed pages, it made me feel like she was right there with me ready to give me a great big hug when I was done with each chapter. It made me feel special, even though I'm not. It is a must read, is anyone there. And jen if you are reading this I love you , no, I mean I really love you.
I love LOVE do you?.......1998-12-17
This is a wonderful biography of Love Hewitt.I'm have been a Jennifer Love Hewitt fan for quit some time and still discovered thing's I did'nt know of her Marc Shapio did a wonderful job.I found it had much more information than the other book of JLH (done by scene)5 stars all the way!!!!!
Book Description
In 1974 Mark Donohue took a year off from driving at the height of his racing career and wrote a candid and revealing book about his journey through the world of auto racing - from amateur races in his own '57 Corvette to winning the Indy 500 in Roger Penske's McLaren M16.
Now, 25 years after it's original publication, The Donohue sons and Bentley Publishers have re-released a new edition of The Unfair Advantage. The new edition contains all of the original text. Expanded content includes photographs and separately appended material that fills out the Donohue story in words and pictures and provides historical context.
The Unfair Advantage captures a uniquely American blend of intellect and scrappiness. A graduate in engineering from Brown University, Donohue integrated creativity, openness to new ideas, humor, and his persistent will to win into every part of his approach to racing.
When Donohue puts that formula into words in The Unfair Advantage the result is as much an attitude and perspective as anything else. As such, it has had wide reaching and particularly personal impact for almost 30 years in the world of motorsport participants and enthusiasts.

A real insight to Trans-Am racing.......2005-09-26
I saw this book last weekend at a Vintage Race being held ther by HSR-West and figured it would be a great collectos item. But it is a lot more than that; it is a real insight to the trials and tribulations of racing and race car development. Donohue comes out as a very humble driver and he is not afraid to admit his mistakes and that of the team. This is a book that you don;t to put down but you also don;t want to be finished with it. I did see Mark Donohue at one of the Riverside Trans-Ams in 1968. I was always wondering what really happened at the end of the 69 season to make Penske swith to that AMC junk and now I know.. Do not miss this book.
One of the great racing tomes.......2004-12-29
This book is easily one of the best narratives about racing I've ever come across. It is a personal and honest account of the late Mark Donahue's racing career from his impromptu start to the zenith of his career in Formula 1, Indy Racing, and Can Am to his retirement.
Anyone who races or aspires to race will delight in his firsthand recollections of his racing exploits and his perspective on one of the great programs in motorsport history (the Can Am Porsche 917).
Highly recommended.
A Must-Own Classic.......2004-10-30
There are very few motorsports books extant that can be called true classics or world-changers. This is one of them, and it's one of the best on top of that. Mark Donahue was an extrordinary individual, not only a blindingly fast driver, but also a talented, disciplined, and most importantly, curious engineer.
To have the virtues of both top-level driver and top-level engineer embodied in the same person is a very rare combination. To have been present - indeed, to be one of the driving forces behind - a revolution within a sport and an industry is even rarer. To have this person write about his experiences while busy changing the world is precious beyond price.
To put it simply, you cannot be a student of the profession of motor racing without reading this book.
I offer this as evidence: while I am by no means an autograph hound, I do, from time to time, have occasion to encounter people within the motorsports family whom I admire enough to want to collect an autograph from. I use my copy of The Unfair Advantage as my autograph storage device. Putting this book in front of people like Jackie Stewart, Carroll Shelby, and Carroll Smith results in a shock of recognition, followed by praise for the author. What greater endorsement could you want?
Changes your life.......2004-09-24
Donohue's apparent candidness and ability to give about the right amount of technical detail without getting boring weaves you through a history of this period of racing when a few guys could do all the race prep. They lived a hard life on the road. Donohue divorced. A rare look from an engineer driver's point of view and the sometimes austere and lonely life of racing. Roger Penske was his team owner and is commented on from Donohue's point of view. Somehow this book changes you as a person as you seem to experience Donohue's racing life though an un-glossed writing style. This style is part of the secret of the books greatness. Though it was likely edited by someone it was NOT "normalized" to be a standard bland coffee table book. Instead it remains in character to the situations and people involved. A rare look into someone else's professional life. Highly recommended.
The Unfair Advantage of Intelligence.......2003-01-21
This is a book I waited to be reprinted for a long time. Mark's honesty about his weaknesses and fears is a sign of his strength and desire to be the best. I admired him for his accomplishments and even more for his drive after reading this book. He helped make Roger Penske the racing legend he is. Will we ever see a man like Mark again? I doubt it!
Book Description
This is a study of one of the most enduring Westerns, High Noon, a film whose political, cultural, and thematic implications have had a profound influence on not only the genre but on filmmaking itself. Author Jeremy Byman examines the film's origin, its production, and the continuing debate over its significance in American cinema.

Book Description
This book opens a door long closed on an important era in the history of Venice. It presents, for the first time, an introductory, contextual study of three centuries of musical activity at the four major eleemosynary foundations of the former Republic of Venice: the ospedali grandi. It provides a comprehensive account of the institutional, social, religious, and civic dimensions of these welfare complexes, with particular reference to their musical subsidiaries, or cori. Involving over 300 external professional male composers and music teachers and over 800 internal professional women musicians, the history of the cori also incorporates a vast repertory of over 4,000 original works - sacred and secular, vocal and instrumental, solo and choral - little know today but recognized as key elements in the historical evolution of musical genres. Responsible for this phenomenon through their association with the ospedali and the figlie del coro were such figures as Lotti, Legrenzi, Vivaldi, Hasse, Galuppi, and Cimarosa, to name but six. It is their relationship to the ospedali and the concert series in the churches and music salons annexed to them that Dr Berdes explores. In the process she proves the significance of the cori as reflectors of a range of cross-disciplinary scholarship from the history of art and architecture to the history of culture and social policy, as well as medical care and aspects of women's, children's, and Venetian studies. Amassing a wealth of information from primary sources, this book constitutes a repository of information and references for a multitude of new investigations. Above all, it will facilitate rediscovery, performance, and analysis of the repertoire commissioned for, and first performed by, the women musicians of the cori, a repertoire of unique richness which may be seen as the mirror of a lost Venetian civilization.
Customer Reviews:
Exceptionally interesting book for the general reader.......2001-11-13
I ordered this book from Amazon because I was interested in Vivaldi's all-girl orchestra. How did such an orchestra come to be? What was its context? Who were the girls (conflicting reports had them orphans, children of prostitutes, unwanted children of the wealthy, etc.)? Who heard them play? What was their schooling like? This book was great! It had the answers and much more. The book presents detailed accounts of the four ospedali that sponsored women's orchestra, including the Ospedale della Pieta, where Vivalidi worked as a violin instructor. The book paints an interesting picture of Venice, the city that was as much a parent to the orchestras as were the ospedali. The book traces the histories of the ospedali, discusses their organization, and devotes considerable attention to the cori (the choir, which was the central musical organization) at each. As it turns out, the violinists trained by Vivaldi seem to be musicians in support of singers performing religious works, including operas, which, in turn support the ospedali. The section on the people at the ospedali devotes attention to the faculty and staff at the schools as much as to the girls who performed there. The section on the daily lives of the musicians was exceptionally interesting.
While the book is a serious work on the history of music, it is easy for the none scholar to read. The book assumes that the reader understands the development of musical styles and tastes. It brings the reader along by mentioning works, but does not give samples of scores to illustrate points. I wished at several points that the author would have included architectural drawings of the ospedali to help me picture what was where. The notes, bibliography, and other documentation are impressive. I ordered the book to learn more about Vivaldi. While Vivaldi does not get much attention here, I learned about an exciting venue in the development of music. This book is worth the price!

The Leader in Corporate Social Performance.......2007-07-17
The book is very pricy compared to Jim Collins books. However, for a college textbook it is an average price.
As for what is inside the book, there is nothing average about it. The first edition of this book was published in in the 1960's by Prof's Keith Davis and Robert Blomstrom. Since then, it has been updated with new data that further proves the benefits of measuring a triple bottom line.
In Part 1, the authors introduce the argument for, and benefits of, Stakeholder Theory.
In Part 2, the doctrine of Corporate Social Responsibility is introduced, and demonstrates examples of how a firm can manage its relations with Stakeholders.
Part 3 is an excellent treatment of business ethics and why it is important to a profitable business model.
Part 4 discusses the effects of globalization, as well as management of government policy and treatment of anti-trust.
Part 5 discusses a company's responsibility to the environment and ecology.
Part 6 discusses the roles, challenges, and opportunities in technology.
Part 7 is the meatiest, and I argue the most valuable, portion of the book. It includes five chapters on building stakeholder relationships, to include the controversies in the Board of Directors and Officer compensation, consumer protection, labor relations, diversity, and media/public relations.
This book is more than just common sense. The organization provides for a great overview of the subject, including some topics you may not have thought of. The case studies are a fantastic way to dig deeper into the material. The strategies and real-world examples will benefit anyone who wishes to introduce more responsibility into their corporation and reap the benefits.
Without this book being required reading in business school, many students may never consider these topics, especially in the framework of Stakeholder Theory. I think the world will be a better place when more students are introduced to this textbook and embrace the ideas therein.
good.......2007-07-08
Excellent condition. Delivery was a little slow. Great service if you are not in a rush to get the book.
All common sense.......2007-02-11
everything in this book is common sense. There is really very little to learn from this, and it is overpriced.

Book Description
It is a well-known claim today that pressure on companies to become more responsible in increasing. However, is this based on fact or is merely wishful-thinking? The evidence obtained across nine stakeholder groups in Europe is sobering indeed in the context of globalization and the constant striving for competitiveness. This book provides an honest and in-depth analysis of how stakeholders themselves assess and influence corporate sustainability. It is an eye-opener, both for companies and for the stakeholders.
